Calder had left Amaria's vault with Jacob, trailing a good ten feet behind him on the way. As they approached the "armory," he had refused to go inside. The noises made him uncomfortable, and he covered his ears with his forearms. He left and spent the night outside, staying in a tree like he had before to avoid raiders and everything else that went bump in the night. He was awake for seven hours and 38 minutes that night, listening to the tunnelers beneath the dirt and the distant shrieks of other monsters the fallout had produced. He returned to the armory in the morning to see if Jacob was still there. The place was quiet and still, and he couldn't see anyone from outside. He opened the door loudly and stepped inside.

Calder was unusually silent. "Hey Calder." he parroted quietly to himself. He did that when he was nervous. That also got him in trouble a lot in The Crawl. He stood still, staring at her. He remembered the baby, and the yelling. He stood for a few seconds longer, and walked over. He shifted from foot to foot, his nerve returning. "I told you mothers weren't real." he said matter-of-factly, putting his hands on his hips.

Piper had picked a two story house which was almost fully intact. She got to work on the repairs while Freddie and Doug the dog played. Jacob came back to his house, surprised to see Calder there "Hey buddy!" He said, trying to be nice "You okay? You kinda ran off last night." Jacob sat in front of the few remaining embers from last night that were still faintly glowing, when someone knocked on the door. It was Freddie with her dog doug, it was impossible to keep he still and her curly black hair was untameable. She entered the hous, sat on the flooe, and found Jacob's old teddy bear. She just played while doug came and snuggled up with Jacob in front of fhe hearth.

Calder huffed, set his canvas bag down, and crossed his arms. "I'll believe in them when I see a living one." he said simply. Maybe they'd find one somewhere else. Maybe they'd find the other released. He missed Harley. He decided to resume his search within a few miles of the house around noon. He was hungry, anyway. He rummaged around inside the sack, almost sticking his head in. "I'm okay. Your house was loud." he said, his voice partially muffled by the bag. He pulled out a small scrap of dried meat that he had found a while ago and took a bite. He stared at the animal. He remembered seeing one before, near the city, but it was foaming at the mouth and tried to bite him. He eyed it suspiciously. Harley said his mother had told him stories about when she kept one as a friend. He said they were called dogs. Calder had been sure that he was making it up, anyway. He kept his eyes on the dog as he ate.

(Just for an idea of how they look) Doug, an extremely docile dog padded over to Calder and sniffed the dried meat. Not liking the non juicy stuff he just lay down next to Calder "He likes you" exclaimed Freddie, walking over to Jacob, toys in hand. "Jacob we rode here all night! Do you have any food for us?" "i'll whip something up" he replied getting up and walking over to his wood fire stove, and putting a log on. "Could you kids go and pick some Maze, it's the one with kernels. He got out a muffin tin, and pulled his cooler over. Piper was rumaging through her new house and setting everything up. She had a small coql generator for her computer, and printer. She set those up, then sat on the moth eaten couch, and ate an apple.

"Alright, let's see..." A man murmured, a quill in his hand. He drew out the route he'd taken using a dashed line. From the Stonecress mountains he'd traveled down toward Kellersville to find it totally abandoned. All there had been was ash, cinders, rubble, charcoal and ruins. He was just a few miles past Toronto which had only a few people milling around, though there did seem to have been a few raiders there. His horse let out an impatient huff and the man reached up to stroke her snout and she seemed to have a little more patience after that. He jotted down notes on the trails and towns at the bottom of his hand-made map. Between the Stonecress mountains was a wide valley full of grassland, though it was dangerous at night since bears came down from the mountains, claws sharper and teeth longer and bigger because of the radiation. The muggy, wet, mash-like forest that spread from the valley to Kellersville was home to many distorted and disturbing animals, though it housed many flowers that seemed to be rich in medicinal properties. Then, there was the forest that blanketed the land from Kellersville, past Toronto and to, he assumed, the next town over. He'd been traveling maybe five months and had been working on his maps. This one was an overview of the entire area he traveled, but he had a map specifically for the Stonecress mountains, one for the caller, another for Kellersville, Toronto and for the land in-between. He also had a journal chalk-full of everything he'd done and discovered since leaving his mountainous village in the Stonecress mountains. He was in light-weight clothing with a messenger-bag around his body. His weapons of choice was a set of throwing knives and a long-dagger. He was an adventurer, and explorer, a scribe, so to speak. He rolled up the map, which the paper was attached to tanned leather, and tied its bounds before setting it back into his messenger bag with his quill. He pulled himself onto his white steed, though the fur on its legs were stained brown from dirt and mud, and began at a steady speed toward the next town. His name, well, his name was Reicher.

Calder looked at the dog, counting feet, eyes, toes, ears. He scooted away slightly, but felt a little less on edge. He watched the woman sit on the couch with her devices. There had been outdated tech in the vault, so he was familiar with the design, but he had never seen a functioning one before. He stood up and walked over to the couch, looking over her shoulder at the screen. "What's it doing?" he asked. "Are you a mother? Can you read? I'm Calder." he said quickly. He still needed to at least learn what all the road signs said before meeting Harley again. He didn't know when exactly that would be, but he wanted to impress him.

"In my room!" Jacob called out of the house, getting the oven ready to dry corn kernels
Piper had just set up her own house, and needed a break when calder bombarded her with questions. "I'm not a mom, i'm a sister" she explained " I can read, and write, and type, I actually write the newspaper. My sister used to hand it out in toronto, while I road my horse to other clients, and it's nice to meet you Calder, I'm Piper! " She flashed her marvelously white teeth at the boy. Piper decided he was a good one.

"My sister... my sister..." he parroted again. He did it when he was excited too. Calder decided he liked her voice. "What's a newspaper? Can you teach me how to read?" he asked.

"Come on Lotus, only a few hours." Reicher comforted. He said only a few hours, but it would really be more like six and a half hours, including the breaks they'd have to take for food and for Lotus, his horse, to rest. Lotus let out a neigh of disbelief and the man let out a soft laugh. He was twenty-four and stood at 6'0. He was in good shape, but was by no means bulky or large, but rather, had a figure etching more toward Lithe. He had few memories of before the Storm, as his town had called it and his parents had long since died of radiation poisoning.

"Yeah, they're on the table next to the tanning rack" Jacob called, remembering putting them together last night after Amaria went to sleep. Oh sure" replied Piper. She pulled out a notepad from her horse's satchel which she took off the horse and wrote each letter and each sound it made "this is the alphabet, and every letter makes a sound, like 'a' makes the sound 'ah'" she continued down the alphabet and then gave him a word to spell "spell the word 'cat'" she smiled encouragingly. Freddie walked outside and pulled off three stocks of corn, the corn had blue and red kernels from radiation. When she walked back inside Jacob cut the kernels off the cob, putting the cobs in the compost. He then put them on a pan and dried them. While the kernels dried, Jacob and Freddie made muffin dough.

Calder looked down at the paper. Cat. He could identify the individual sounds, but he didn't remember which letters made which. 26 letters, three sounds. He sighed. The letter A was ah, but which one was A again? He shook his head. "Which one makes the 'kh' sound?" he asked.

Piper looked at the kid "the letters 'C' and 'K' make the 'kuh' sound she explained, but in this case we're using the letter 'C'" she sas tdying her best to explain it to the kid like she taught Freddie, but was having trouble. The kernels dried out, and Jacob mashed them into corn meal. Once that was done he added the dry ingredients to the wet, and put the muffins in to bake. Doug padded back over to Calder and lay down. (I think doug's a saint bernard) Freddie went back to Jacobs teddy bear, and played with it. Jacob went outside to wach and supervise Amaria after he told piper to make sure the muffins don't burn.

Calder looked back at the paper. Staring at the letters, he took the pencil from Piper and tried to imitate the C like he was tracing a picture. He drew the A after that. Only one more to go. The letters were large and spaced out, but he could almost sound the words out. "Kh-Ah." he read shakily. "Which one makes the "tt" sound?" This was frustrating.

Amaria shot her first arrow which skimmed right under the target, the feathers on the end clipping the wood and the arrow pierced a tree not far away. She drew the second arrow into the string and aimed higher and more to the right. The target hung by a chain from a post that protruded outwards from the forge; the second arrow hit the post. Now that she got a feel for where the target was, she drew her third arrow into her bow and released, the arrow landing on the target in the teal section. The innermost circle was yellow, bordered by red, then teal, then black and, finally, white. She walked over and pulled her arrow from the tree, post then she went to the target and pulled the third arrow from the wood. "How was that?" She asked, going back to where she'd been standing before.

"Very good" responded Jacob giving a toothy grin "I'm not much better at archery, or any combat to be honest." He gave her the pistol they made last night " This will intimidate people more than a bow, so keep it. " He also gave her a satin bag full of bullets. " 'tt' 'T' makes the 'tt' sound, remember? " Piper remembered the corn muffins and got up to check them "Jacob! Your muffins are done" she called to him, and Jacob came inside to pop them out of the tray (we'll just assume Calder is practicing spelling) "Breakfast!" Jacob called, pulling out some jam and honey from his cooler.

Not hearing Amaria behind him he brought the assorted jams, corn muffins, and only kind of soft butter. A knock was heard at the door, Jacob looked thdough the peephole and saw a group of his clients. He opened the door and let all six of them in. "Ahh, let me fetch your items" he said seeing them. During that discussion he made 200 iron, and 120 bronze pieces, which he melted into bars, bars were worth more to him, because shops accepted them, and weapons could be made from them. In the end he had 10 Iron bars, and 4 bronze. "Good he said, returning to everyone almost done with their food. He just remembered "Doug, come eat some Henhen" he pulled the chicken breast out of the box, and fed it to the dog, who was very grateful.

"Sorry about that" said Jacob "Anyway, let's eat!" He cut open a still warm muffin and put some raspberry jam on it. While the group ate, he and Piper joked about all their history, laughing for almost an hour after everyone got up.
