"Because it's impossible, Phallon. No amount of talking will help," Shane told her with a hint of agitation. It was just so unfair! He never should have taken this job in the first place... Then none of this would be happening! With a sigh, he shook his head again, a bit more aggressively this time. "I'm sorry, but there's just no point in talking about it. And I'd rather not anyway. If you want to talk about me then fine, but what's bothering me isn't something I'm willing to discuss right now." With that, he went back to pouring the flour into the bowl and then cracking eggs, all with her arms around him and providing a very bittersweet moment.

Shane stopped what he was doing again when she left the main area. Anger started to bubble inside him, and he let it out by slamming his fist onto the counter top and letting a curse word escape his lips, a little louder than he would have liked too. There just was no winning for him right now! No matter he did or said there was always the frustration of needing human companionship and then not being able to have it, no matter how close within reach it was. Phallon was so special to him right now, but none of it mattered in the end because he couldn't stay with her. Not forever, or for very much longer. But the worst part was that he couldn't explain why, and that was just causing even more conflicts.
If he hand't of cracked the eggs into the bowl already, he would have just stopped making breakfast and went to shower for some time to think or something. But he couldn't wast the food now, so he continued cooking even though he wasn't hungry anymore either. But now, there was a lot more hostility in his movements, agitation and pent up frustration all coming together to make him a ticking time bomb before something made him finally explode and lose all composure.

Phallon heard something slam onto the counter, and, for a moment, was worried that he might have hurt himself. Then she shook her head. So what if he had? It wasn't like he would admit it. She felt horrible for thinking that, but she couldn't help it. How many problems had she trusted him with to help her solve? She trusted him enough for her to let him, a complete stranger, stay with her in probably the most dangerous city she's ever stayed in. And he couldn't even humor her and tell her what had made him lose the happiness he had shown just moments ago! Phallon dug through her clean clothes, searching for something to wear. If he wanted to play that game, then fine. She'd play along with him. If there was one thing she was good at, it was being stubbornly difficult.

Quickly, he mixed the batter and then poured it into the skillet to fry a pancake. It didn't take long, honestly, so he put that one on a plate and then made a few more. There were six before the batter was gone, so he wrapped up three up them in cling wrap then stuck them in the freezer for later. He wouldn't eat more than one right now, and he only guessed that Phallon would be alright with two. The man placed the warm pancakes on two plates and then set them on the table, along with the butter and maple syrup. He said nothing as he sat down and just began to put a bit of butter onto his and then some syrup, soon cutting it up into small pieces. His eyes never left the food to wander like normal.

His eyes still never left his food, even when Phallon finally came to join him. He ate in silence for a while, finishing half his pancake before it just became too much to bare. He had to talk about something to break the awkwardness. "Look, I'm sorry. But you really can't do anything to help me. And I really can't tell you what's wrong. I know it seems stupid, but I literally cannot tell you." He let out a sad sigh. "Just trust me when I say you're better off not knowing anyway."

Shane frowned at her, looking up slightly to do so, his brows furrowing a bit too. He really hadn't been expecting that type of response, and how much could he really say without actually telling the secrets he'd been sworn to? He looked back down at his food and then just lightly poked it with a fork. "Kinda." That was all he could really say. It's not like he could really tell her that he'd killed a lot of people before, for various reasons. It's not like he could tell her he worked to wipe criminals' memories clean and rehabilitate them. He couldn't tell her she was just another job...that he'd gotten too attached to already... The hole was 20 feet deep at this point, and he was stuck at the bottom of it with the shovel he'd used to dig it.

"Yes," Shane said rather bluntly in response. He got up then. leaving his half eaten pancake on the table. He doubted she'd believe him, so he just went to grab some clean clothes and then went into the bathroom to take a shower. He shut the door but put his hands on the counter and stared at himself in the mirror. He looked so tired right now, whether it was from being emotionally drained so early in the day or from the rough night of sleep with waking up several times, he wasn't sure anymore. He finally sighed and hung his head then shook it. "You can't tell her any more."

Shane wanted to tell her, not liking this fighting that was going on anymore, but he couldn't. He simply couldn't. With a heavy sigh, he undressed and started taking the shower for the day. Unfortunately, they both had to work today, but he thought maybe he'd just call them both off sick or something. If she went then he'd have to go, but he really did not feel like going into work today. But for now, all he could do was try and let the warm waters wash away his trouble down the drain, even though it didn't do much for him this time. "Should have just let them take my memories too..." he muttered to himself.

Upon finishing her food, Phallon gathered up the dirty dishes and took them to the sink. She washed them off and tried them before putting them neatly into the cabinet where they belonged. Once down, she went over to the couch. There really wasn't much you could do inside the motel room. It was small and bare, and she hadn't bothered to buy much stuff to help pass the time. Why buy a lot of things and have to pack it up when they moved? Right now, however, she wished she had something to tinker with. A lock, more likely. There was comfort in the familiarity of the action of picking a lock, even if it wasn't protecting something valuable. Shane might think it weird for her to have been fiddling with a lock, but doing anything was better than just sitting on the couch watching TV. At least she would have had something to occupy her focus until it was time to leave for work.

Shane showered normally, but he didn't sing this time like normal. His thoughts were pretty scattered, too. After a bit, he got out and dried off, letting his hair stay shaggy and sticking out in all directions. He didn't pat it down. After getting dressed, he came out of the bathroom and went to the room phone then called work. His back was to Phallon, and he didn't even look at her as he got their boss on the line and then explained that they were both sick. As he spoke, he even added a few coughs in the middle of his sentences to really sell it. Even his tone sounded drained and ill. "Yeah, so we can't come in to work today." It wasn't long before he hung up.

"We're not fit to work today. Both of us clearly have things to work out, and our emotional state currently wouldn't allow us to work efficiently," Shane answered her, using a more sophisticated kind of speech for this. For what reason, even he wasn't entirely sure of. Maybe he just talked like that when something was really wrong. Either way, he made sure the door was locked, again, then sat back down at the dining table, folding his hands together on top of it and looking them rather intently as he got lost in thought.

"We've gotta talk," Shane replied with slight aggression. The man was definitely troubled to be snapping at Phallon, if even in only a light way. He shook his head for a moment then spoke again in a much softer tone. "We have to talk. There's a lot I think you need to tell me, and some stuff I should probably tell you, based on what you say anyway." If she did in fact remember everything about her kidnapping for the second chance at life, then he may just tell her his true intentions. She'd have to be reported anyway and taken back to the main HQ. Then, his bosses would decide what to do with her, but he was sure it would end bloody.
That was the bad thing. He knew that once she knew everything, there was no way she'd trust him ever again. He didn't even know if he had the heart to turn her in, or maybe just lie and say she got away. But they would find her. He knew they would. They had ties all over the U.S. They would severely punish him, too. She had a right to know everything if she really did remember things, but what would she do once she really knew the truth?

"Your dreams," Shane answered in the same soft tone this time, trying to keep his emotions under control, even though his mind and heart were currently in immense turmoil. "I need to know everything about your dreams. I need to know everything you remember, no matter how small or insignificant the detail." He stretched his leg under the table to push out a chair. "Please, sit down and tell me everything." His gaze never left his folded up hands.

How has your day been?)
Shane finally looked up and over at her when it took her too long to come and sit in the chair. His eyes held that distant, troubled look they had shown before. But he narrowed them a bit and frowned when he saw the expression on her face, along with her posture and slightly pale complexion. "Nervous about something? Or scared to tell me what you remember?" the man asked, his voice putting on the tone his eyes portrayed.

(It's been great. My family went down to our lake house we're trying to finish building and spent the day swimming and relaxing. How has your day been?)
"Of course, I'm nervous," Phallon replied, becoming defensive once more. "I've seen the way you are when you're upset. I'd rather not take my chances in doing or saying the wrong thing." It was true. While her crimes never involved hurting anyone, she had no idea if he held thievery on the same level as murder. She didn't want to be his next victim.
But then something clicked in her mind. Why would be so angry with what she remembered? He didn't know her past life before she was dumped into this city. Yet his question had been accusatory. She stood and walked closer to the table, but only because it put her closer to the door as well. "You ask these questions as if you already know what the answer is," the woman mused. Her heart was racing, but not in the way she had come to enjoy, not the way she had felt when they had woken up. This was panic. Panic and fear. "Why are you acting as if I've done something wrong?"

Rather bad because of depression, but it's fine. I'm just glad you had a fun day)
"I'm not. You didn't do anything wrong, but I need to know everything you remember. Everything," Shane repeated then stood up. It was easy to tell how scared she really was. He could take guesses as to why, so he'd hopefully alleviate some of that fear. Stepping closer, he reached out and quickly pulled her into a firm yet gentle hug. "I know you're scared and upset, but please, just tell me everything," he now whispered as he held her close.

(I'm sorry. I wish there was something I could do to help make things better.) Phallon froze as he stood. Her mind contemplated the idea of making a break for it, but Shane would have easily stopped her before she unlocked the door. So she watched as he drew closer, expecting the worse and receiving a hug. Her thoughts were reeling. One part of her wanted to be lulled into the security of Shane's embrace, to tell him who she was. Yet the other part couldn't let herself give into him. Heart versus brain. In the end, she pushed him away. "You can't do that," Phallon said, all her anger and confusion leaking into her words. "You can't lead me to think you care for me, only to push me away when I try to get you to open up, then turn the tables on me. Shane, what's all this about? Why are you acting so weird?"

Nah, it's fine. Thanks, but I've lived with it most of my life. It's not a big deal anymore, honestly)
The man honestly wasn't surprised when he was shoved back, but it only made him let go and take one small step in reverse then sway ever so slightly on his feet. He frowned down at her, now looking more sad than anything. His own heart felt like it was breaking already, and they hadn't even shared information yet. "Phallon, I need you to tell me what you remember before I can answer that. If you be honest with me first, then I'll be honest with you," Shane told her then took a deep breath, held it for a moment, then let it out in a sigh. He really was reluctant to do this. "Do you remember something involving a chase and then the world going numb, then a van?" His eyes now studied her for any sign to indicate she knew what he was talking about. This was it really, the big question, the inquiry that could decide both of their fates.

Thanks, but I'll be okay. Life isn't easy, but the easy things often aren't worth it. I'm just wanting everything to be worth it in the end)
Shane nodded and looked away for a moment. "Sit down," he told her thens at down himself. "Trust me, you'll want to be sitting for this." This was it. He was going to break the number one rule of his job. He was going to tell her, everything. Now, his heart was not only breaking but also in a race with itself. It pounded hard and rapid against his ribs as his mind raced. He looked calm and sad on the outside, but inside was a wreck.
