For what seemed like the tenth time, Morningpaw shook her wet whiskers as she padded into camp with bundles of the driest moss she could find. This is gonna do no good for the elders, she thought, mildly disappointed with herself as she made her way to where said cats lay presumably shivering in their nests.

"schemes?" Whorlpaw smiled brightly. "Are you playing a game?" "We were just adjusting out nests. Whorlpaw found some moss when we were checking out the camp walls." “I’m practicing my hunting with this feather.” Coalpaw purred in response, happier now that Whorlpaw and Palepaw were here. He offered out. “Wanna join me?” Honeypaw glanced at Palepaw and hummed evenly. “Do you think you could show me where you found it when you find time? It would be good for collecting for the elders. I would rather not face their overly exerted scolding.”

There were very few cats who happily shared tongues with Morningpaw and Raggedthorn was one of them. "Yes, that and to clean and line your nest anew," she murmured as she gently licked the ailing tom's head.

The apprentice paused strickingly at the tom's words. Death was nothing new to her; both her littermates and mother had died before she reached her sixth moon. She barely hardly knew them well with their sickness keeping them away for most of their short lives. However Raggedthorn was no fleeting cat in Morningpaw's life. His death wouldnt just fade away in her mind like a paw wound. "Dont say such thing, Raggedthorn. You have a good number of seasons left in you yet," she replied but as the elder's flank shuddered with effort she found that she was more convincing herself than she would admit.

"sure!" Whorlpaw crouched in excitement. "That's a good idea since the wind could carry it off."
"I can show you now." Palepaw nodded to the older apprentice, but paused and looked at Cedarstar. "Unless you need something, father?"
Cedarstar shook his head. "No, I should check with Cloudscar, I just wanted to see how you all were." He nodded to the apprentices before moving off to find the deputy.
Palepaw sighed softly. "I had hoped he would take us out today."

I only hope you all do not fear, when I go. I have not feared my end for a long...long time." Raggedthorn admitted, before the old tom seemed to realize what he was saying. He coughed once and shook his head. "I'm sorry, Morningpaw. I don't mean to frighten or worry you."

Besides, I have to show off all that Ashrock's taught me lately. I'll be sure to catch up in no time!" Coalpaw exclaimed, his large paws thumping on the ground as he shuffled into place. He tossed the feather in the air and gave Whorlpaw a bright glance. "Let's see who's the better hunter then." Honeypaw watched Coalpaw and Whorlpaw for a moment, noticing Whorlpaw's enthusiasm when it came to Coalpaw. Honeypaw ignored the strange twist in his belly, instead looking back at Palepaw and nodding with appreciation. "That sounds ideal. I want to stretch my legs anyway." He then glanced to where Cedarstar had left, before he looked back at Palepaw and mused. "He is the leader, after all. But, I suppose I can understand it. The days Goldberry was training Tumblefoot, we hardly ever got to go out together. Well. Not much we can do about that, even so."

If the warrior life was so dangerous, so fleeting, so prone to death, where was the point of holding other close? The gray cat sighed inwardly and gently pressed her muzzle to the elder's head. His breathing was already beginning to slow down. "You seem tired Raggedthorn. Rest now my dear friend. I'll see you again at sundown." She softly changed the hard bedding and as she quietly exited the den, she prayed that StarClan not call home one of her few companions yet.

"It'll probably be you since you're more experienced." Whorlpaw chuckled, but quickly crouched down to stalk the feather. "But I'm not gonna let that stop me!" Once the feather landed, Whorlpaw bounced after it. Even though she landed right on the feather, she had jumped far to high in the air. Had they been out in the forest, she would've knocked into brambles or branches.
Palepaw flicked his ear and sighed. He started leading Honeypaw off to where they found the moss. "We used to do so much together. He'd play and even train with us while we were in the nursery, but ever since he became deputy..." He shook his head.
Houndthroat watched the apprentices play and interact with bitterness prickling in his pelt. His personality and pride made it different for him to have friends.

His personality and pride made it different for him to have friends. “Don’t count yourself out!” Even in the face of competition, Coalpaw could not go without giving a word of confidence towards Whorlpaw. He blinked excitedly as she caught the feather, before he bellowed with laughter. “Oh! You jump really high! I thought you were a Skyclan cat for a moment there!” Honeypaw listened to Palepaw with a flick of his ears, taking each word in and storing it away for later. He glanced at the younger tom, his voice rich with thought as he rumbled. “Well. He’s certainly not going to step out of duties to only spend time with his kin. So, this would be the prime opportunity to prove your skills and training, so that when he considers patrols, he may be more keen on bringing you along. I suppose both of our fathers are quite...popular, aren’t they?” His words trailed off with a hint of sarcasm, not towards Palepaw, but towards the irony of the situations. He tossed his eyes and sighed lightly. “Either way, getting his attention through drive and wit might be your best solution. Or, you can ignore my words completely, I need not mind much in that department.” “You know.” Lilypaw took the time to slip away, her small paws bringing her towards Houndthroat as she searched him with pale blue eyes. “You look like you sat on a thorn. What has you so down?”

"Oh." Whorlpaw flushed and looked back at Coalpaw. "Did I jump too high?"
Palepaw didn't reply, his only response was a flick of his ear, gaze drifting in lost thought. The way his tail hung, it was easy to tell he'd rather just to back to the time his father wasn't a high ranking member of the Clan.
Houndthroat jumped in start when Lilypaw came slinking up to him. He frowned at her, gritting his teeth at his wounded pride from being so easily snuck up upon. "Lilypaw?! What do you want?" he snapped sharply.

He frowned at her, gritting his teeth at his wounded pride from being so easily snuck up upon. "Lilypaw?! What do you want?" he snapped sharply. “Well! I think your jump was really cool. But, Ashrock I think would be like “grr no, that’s too high, do it again.”” Coalpaw playfully imitated his mentor, before he laughed. “If it makes you feel better...I can’t jump high at all. I think I’m too lumpy.” Honeypaw was not one to console, nor was he one to ever admit any sympathies he had for his clanmates. Even so, a faint tugging in his chest made him inwardly sigh, and he knew the last thing he wanted was a moping Palepaw. “Look, I know it’s weird at first. To be away from our parents and to start controlling our own paths. But, look at it this way. Even if Cedarstar can’t play or spend as much time with you anymore, you certainly still have kin who can. I see Whorlpaw at your side constantly. And as much of a lizard-brain my brother can be, or as skittish as my sister can be, I find myself far less distraught knowing they have my back. Hng. Now I sound like some wordy elder.” He pushed his faint fluster away and stopped before the moss patch, eyeing it with consideration. “Well. You certainly have an eye for quality, Palepaw. This moss looks satisfactory.” Lilypaw paused in her padding as Houndthroat snapped at her. The small she-cat sat on her haunches instead, looking up at the young Warrior. “Well. I want to know why you seem so prickly this time. You’ll scare the kits with a pout like that.” Her mew was innocent, but an almost faint hint of teasing rested in there.

Whorlpaw chuckled at his imitation of Ashrock. "You really like your mentor don't you?"
"Whorlpaw was the one who found it." Palepaw flicked his ear at the sight of the moss. He let out a sigh. "I love my sisters, I really do, but sometimes...can be a bit much--especially Whorlpaw. My father's a great mentor, just like Closesky! And, yeah, I'm proud to be Flintclaw's apprentice, but my father was careful when he was helping us train in the nursery. I just want to make him proud, but he so busy now, I doubt he'll even notice..."
Houndthroat flicked his ear and frowned at her, his pride getting in the way of admitting anything. With pelt prickling, he got up and started for the camp entrance. "As if I'd tell you."

The black tom shuffled his large paws happily. “I know he messed up...but everybody messes up, and I’m not mad. He’s been around way more, so he’s doing better, and that’s what’s important, right?” Honeypaw remained silent for a moment, his belly burning lightly. Cedarstar had mentored his brother. Half-brother, he reminded himself sharply. And Cardinalblaze was hardly anything to cry home about. He shoved his inner thoughts away, giving a haughty snort. “Flintclaw’s an impressive fighter. He’s alot like my mentor, even if Oakstalk is a right mud-brain half the time. Hmph. Your only competition is Cardinalblaze, if you want to train to impress your father. I think you’ll do just fine. Believe me. If you make it an effort to be the most skilled, you will be recognized as such. But, I also strive for such a goal. So, the question remains. How badly do you want to be seen?” Lilypaw frowned lightly at being brushed off. Springing to her paws, she followed after him, puffing out. “Don’t you walk away from me! If you’re going out well...well then you better take me with you!” She decided quickly.

Whorlpaw shrugged uneasily. "I dunno...I guess?" She glanced away from Coalpaw, flicking her ear. "Father says he can't be trusted."
"I don't care if the Clan recognizes me or not. I just want my father too." Palepaw frowned at Honeypaw. "Everyone always wants to be the best of the best like Closesky, well, I don't. I just want my family to be proud of me."
Houndthroat flattened his ears, barely even glancing back at her. He didn't stop. "And why should I do that?"

I’m not happy that he did what he did, but I do hope he proves himself again. He really is a good mentor now.” Coalpaw nodded, understanding why Cedarstar would not be so keen to trust his brother. “The longer you doubt their pride in you now, the longer you’ll blind yourself. What makes you think you don’t make him proud already?” Honeypaw snorted lightly, a part of him roiling with envy. The pride of a leader seemed far more meaningful than the pride of a tom deemed a murderer by many of the clan. Surely Palepaw didn’t believe Cedarstar wasn’t proud of him? All he had to do was breathe and exist and Honeypaw was sure the leader would be proud. Why did Palepaw have no interest in gaining respect of all the clan, by trying to reach for the highest branch? He shook the thoughts away once again, inspecting the moss closely. “Because if I recall, going out alone is not the best idea, and maybe I want to go out of camp and hunt. Surely you would not deny me that.” Lilypaw lifted her nose, trying to make her soft voice seem more forceful.

"I'd say he's more of medicine cat now." Whorlpaw mewed with a curious tilt of her head. "He's been helping Snowdance for a while."
Palepaw shrugged. "Because I never see him anymore, I guess. I get that what he does is important, but if my sisters and I were important to him too, don't you think he'd spend more time with us? Scorchfire spends time with his kits all the time and even Smokestorm gets annoyed with how much Cliffheart tries to spend time with him."
Houndthroat rolled his eyes. "Fine. Whatever. Just don't slow me down." He picked up his pace, though inwardly, he was grateful for the tagalong.

I don’t think Snowdance is all too happy either.” Honeypaw hummed in reminder. “Ah. But Scorchfire and Cliffheart are not leader, or deputy. Had they been, I am sure they would be just as absent. If it makes you feel any better, I’m sure Cedarstar will pull some vines sooner or later and make a way for you to join him often.” The tom’s tufted tail flicked in interest as he pawed at the moss one last time. “Oh please, Houndthroat. I’m plenty fast enough to outrun you.” Lilypaw gave a small chime of laughter, feeling more relaxed now that he seemed to accept her tagging along. Admittedly, she always wanted to know why he was always so...distant.

That pity. She couldn't say she hated it- she learned never to have strong feelings for most things if it wasn't to serve her Clan. At the same time she would rather prefer it not be the bout of emotion she received in every conversation she had. "I know" she mewed, flicking her ear. "Where will we be practicing?"

"I think so." Coalpaw mewed honestly, crouching low to pounce upon the feather. He rambled out. "Cedarstar might be upset right now, but the clan'll only suffer if we take away Warriors for too long. Ashrock is still helpful." He decided.
"See we will." Honeypaw sighed smoothly, giving a light grimace of annoyance as he stepped near some cold mud. Shaking his paw free of the filth, he decided promptly. "Well. Thank you for showing me the location of this moss. The elders will certainly be less snappish with fresh moss like this...Is there anything else we could do out here? I am certainly itching to test my training."
"You are not my mentor, Houndthroat. You're hardly older than me! You can't boss me around." Lilypaw swallowed down her light scowl with a soft voice of defiance. She shook her head lightly before she offered. "Then let's get hunting. Do you scent anything?"

The small tom moved to lead her out of camp, asking out. "Have you been practicing your stances too? We'll be battle training tomorrow."

"I have been practicing". She was about to leave it at that but convinced by some random urge to continue conversation- something she never did- she added, "I do practice but i must admit the cold makes it harder recently."

Palepaw flicked his ear, scraping up some more of the moss. "I guess we could do some battle training. I haven't been out with Flintclaw yet today and I don't want to train everyday just to get better."
"Maybe, but I'm still a warrior and you're only an apprentice." Houndthroat huffed before pausing to scent the air. The cold breeze sent a chill down his spine. "Nothing yet. I hope the prey doesn't enter their burrows early this leafbare."
