Karim hated working there. He'd been assigned to the project a while back, so long ago he'd stopped marking the days on his calendar. The other scientists loved working there, or perhaps they hated it so much they'd given up and just decided to accept it. He'd spend most of his days doing grunt work, if it could even be called that β going over the same files, the same DNA results. But other times, he'd work in the labs, directly with her. When he'd first seen her - at least, he assumed the alien was female, as the other scientists jokingly (or not so jokingly) referred to her as a queen - he'd decided he wasn't going to act like the others did. They'd hold her down and inject her with needles, trying to see the results of every experiment, trying to see if they could make her breed by forcing it. They wouldn't clean her cage (why not refer to it as what it was?), they'd leave her in her waste, laugh at her when it seemed like she was going to break. It was disgusting. So, he'd named her Akilah. An Arabic name meaning intelligent, logical, wise. She wasn't stupid, that much was obvious. If she didn't have emotions, if she didn't have thoughts... she did. Of course she did. There was no doubt of that. She was far more intelligent then they wanted to admit. And he wasn't going to treat her like an animal. Not like them. Yes, he had to achieve results, had to get DNA and check on her, but the least he could do was treat her like he'd treat one of his sisters or cousins or, if she truly was animal-like, like he'd treat her as though she were a pet. With kindness. Because she deserved it as much as any other person. She hadn't done anything to harm them. He'd pull a chair over to sit next to her, read to her, because it seemed like she liked the sound of his voice. He had no idea if she recognized his words. But he could still teach her β the English language, basic information she might someday need. He doubted she would ever get out of there, but regardless, if she could... if someone managed to find out about the project and shut it down... but that was wishful thinking. And they'd just take her, do their own experiments on her, and the cycle would begin again. Today, though β Dante (one of the other scientists) had been talking about how they might move Akilah, about how he couldn't wait to get back some DNA results... and other things, disgusting things about how Dante wished their test subject looked human, because the only female scientists in the program weren't there for 'fun.' When Karim had found out he was assigned to keep watch over Akilah, he'd breathed a sigh of relief. At least he could know she was safe, for an hour, maybe even two if he was lucky. βHey, Akilah,β he said, placing a hand on the thick glass. βSorry I wasn't here yesterday. I had work to do. Are you doing alright?β He already knew the answer β of course she wasn't doing alright, the other scientists were downright tormenting her. βI'm sorry, Akilah. I'll see if they'll let me have an extra watch.β He smiled, though she probably didn't recognize the gesture β she wasn't human, after all. Even if he treated her as though she were human. ![](http://imgur.com/snEF28k.png) [ @madeofstarstuff ]
Akilah was used to the dark. Her cell was always dark, black, like tar and just as thick. But she was used to it. And even with the light from the ceiling and spilling in from the window, she could tell that even she herself was such a dark inky color that she blended in the dark. She didn't even know what she was, really; in the faint light of the window, if she was standing a certain way, she could barely just make out her reflection on the hard unbreakable glass. Chrome-colored sharp teeth, dark skin that was like liquid ink. She noticed that she had no visible eyes, but a visor of sorts, a bowed smooth head, the very end starting to flatten and take a three-point shape, like a crown. Her vision was sharp, keen, and she could see things in normal sight, but when it was completely dark, she could detect things very easily rather than be blind. Her 'night vision' was almost a deep purple, purple and black, the color replacing the atmosphere as the black colored in the shadows. So when it was dark, she didn't feel scared, as she's heard the other...things...in nearby cells, crying in the loneliness.
Loneliness. She was used to that, too. She had no cell mate, no one to communicate with -- communication was a standard difficulty for her anyways, because the Beings that came and went through the window, and ones who barged in her cell with sharp things and nets and poles and pinned her up against the wall, her against many, they didn't speak a language she understood nor returned. All she could do was growl, and hiss, and let out sharp sounds like cries. Not the emotional crying, because she couldn't produce tears. But animal-cries, because after all, wasn't she an animal in a cage?
Akilah thought this bitterly, a curl to her upper lip, a soft hiss of disgust and disapproval sounding through her sharp teeth. She didn't like being like this, no, not one bit. Every day, twice, in the early hour and right before the darkness came, she was brought (served by a synthetic, she knows the difference, she could taste the raw milky oil in them, the unappealing aroma that she breathed every time they stepped foot through the hidden door) a raw slab of meat. The source, unknown, but it was cut thick and served on a large tray. It was disgusting, dripping with blood. But, she knew in her system that this was right, this was her daily food source, that she was a carnivorous animal. Once she didn't have an audience (Being or Synthetic), she brought the meat up to her cocoon shelling in the top corner of the ceiling, using her Pharyngeal jaws inside her mouth to feed. It was an experience she grew accustomed to, something she was trained since she was hatched in this very room. It was crude, and yet it awakened some internal predatory system, and her elongated fingers and claws would tighten around the meat protectively, and she would feed with such a hunter's hunger than afterwards, when she noticed her audience of Beings in the window, it would make her hide in her cocoon shelling.
She hated this, honestly. She hated the non-nice Beings and the discipline and the electric shocks if she isn't awake on time and just everything. She hated this. One time she hissed and snarled at one Being that came in, and they shot her with something that made her cry out loud and spasm with electricity as they took a blood sample of her acidic blood, filling it with a special tube so it wouldn't corrode.
Akilah hated everything about this place. Except for Him.
She didn't know his name, but she recognized him every time he was around, just like now.
When the light in the window flickered on, her attention went to it as he came up to the glass. Her whole demeanor changed when He was around. He was nice. He was a good Being. She didn't like the needles or anything, but he was better than the others, the mean ones.
Shifting from her cocoon shelling in the ceiling, dropping to a crouch onto the floor, she stepped into the pool of lighting from the window, standing face to face with Him. She wasn't sure if her floor was the same level as his, but she was just barely taller than Him. She didn't need to hear him with the loud humming machine they used to speak to her (most Beings do it to taunt her, talk weird and disturbing things to her, or play super loud things over the speakers, making her cringe). She had heightened senses, like taste and hearing and sight, et cetera. So she could hear him just fine through the thick glass. To show her approval of His presence, she let out a soft noise, unlike her usual sounds; this was like a humming noise, one she practiced when she tried words on her free time in the dark. She hummed to Him, keeping her sharp liquid-chrome-like teeth out of view, and she extended her hand -- almost similar to His, but skinnier, with three long fingers, with chrome-like sharp claws from her black skin -- and laid it over the thick glass where he'd put his.

The call had come while she was taking one of the drones for a test ride. It was extremely dangerous, since it hadn't been tested before, not even with a control, but she did it anyway. Often her coworkers called her crazy-a daredevil-so to speak. Not that she minded. Alexanna loved challenges and adventures. So when she had gotten the call to be the co-pilot on the Cassiopeia, the girl had jumped at the chance. A few of her friends think she is such a dare devil and a risk-taker, because she was born a guy. The testosterone levels or something just had to control it, so they said.
Standing now in her uniform she grinned, staring at the hangar. Hurrying off the shuttle she headed inside happily. There was a slight bounce in her step as she hurried inside with the crowd. The over excited male had been up at the crack of dawn and had been on the first shuttle out here. He was beyond excited. Alex ran his hand through his long golden hair. It was simply magnificent. As the group was lead inside to see the ships, she froze. A small gasp escaping her as she looked up at the glorious ships. Her heart pounded and she grinned excitedly at the person next to her. This was it. This was her big chance. She couldn't screw it. Alexanna was more than excited to shove it in her parents faces that she could be a successful girl, and not the stupid boy, who had to continued the family legacy, just as they had demanded since she was born. Alexander Bloodworth. She still hated that name. Alexanna was much nicer, though she didn't mind being called Alex, it cold go either way with the nickname.
Noticing a small group heading towards them, she recognized the general and stood a little straighter. Those must be the Commanders. Biting her bottom lip in excitement she quickly looked them over and then stood at attention, waiting to be addressed.

Ylva took a deep breath as she adjusted her uniform. She'd barely been in the apartment long enough to unpack her things, so when she'd gotten this position she hadn't had to do much work in the end. She still wasn't completely sure how she'd gotten said position. All she had was a note from a general that was telling her she'd been picked for a special project. There was almost no details in it. She had accepted of course. Even if she knew nothing about it, a mission like this, requested by a general, this was the perfect chance to prove herself. She was going to make sure no one died on her watch. At least if she had anything to say about it. She didn't know who else was on the mission, but then again she didn't really know anyone since leaving her homeworld. She was wondering if she would be the only one of her kind of this mission, or even on this team. Apparently there was two. She shook her head, fluttering her wings behind her a bit. She needed to get going. She didn't want to be late on her first assignment ever.
In minutes she was out the door of the place she could barely call home and in transit to the hanger she'd been told to go to. She glanced around. She wasn't exactly a normal sight. At least that was what she assumed. She doubted many Vasakyn in military uniforms were common. She decided to avoid making awkward eye contact with any of the other passengers, and took to looking outside instead. It certainly wasn't Vasakaya. She sighed softly, brushing some of her longer hair out of her eyes. She had most of it pulled back into ponytail, which certainly helped.
She didn't know if it felt like hours or seconds, but she was stepping off the transit and standing in front of the hanger. Well, here went everything. She wished she could stop her wings from rustling with nervousness. She moved inside, glancing around slowly. She wasn't exactly sure what to do. She finally spotted a group of people and approached it. Probably the closest she was going to get. She suddenly wondered if the doctorate was worth it at this point. She glanced around, not knowing what to say or if she should even say anything to them. She'd been all for this before, but now that she was actually here she wasn't so sure. Who knew the possibility of death would bring everything into perspective when there was no adrenaline?

Nick had walked up and down the halls of the place he called home, rereading the papers in his hands over and over again, making sure he didn't miss a single word. As he was reading (for the eleventh time) he kept noticing a stupid hangnail which he would have to deal with later. He had a job to prepare for - he was gonna be a dropship pilot for the Cassiopeia crew, something to be pleased about: an honor, really. Nick wasn't one to get nervous but this was kind of a big deal. In a way, after all, lives would be in his hands. He'd groaned in annoyance that the hangnail was STILL there. He was curious to see the ship and meet his crew, he hoped to work with some very professional pilots who he could learn from. When he'd actually arrived at the hangar, he looked around, taking everything in. There were a few boxes out of place - a pet peeve of his that he couldn't quite shake - but otherwise he was pretty pleased by the overall layout. He was astounded by the size of the ship he'd be working on, curious to see the inside and the dropship he'd be piloting. He'd walked into a small kitchen, and made himself a cup of coffee, wondering what was in store for him. Then - General Howe had called them out to meet their teams, and he'd sipped his coffee, doing a preliminary size up of his new teammates, trying not to make any judgements of his first impressions.
When she'd first got the letters, Sadie was shocked. They wanted her? With her previous experience on teams (not much, but pretty bad experiences, a few incidents with explosives here and there... nobody died, of course, but still!) Once the shock had finally worn off - the day before the mission left - she'd gathered her things, making sure to grab some extra scrap metal in case they didn't have enough on the ship. After all, you never knew when something needed to be blown up. Upon arriving at the hangar, she quickly looked for her crew, but since she'd only glanced at the papers, she had no clue who was who. Sure, she was on Andromeda, but any of these guys could've been on the other team... oh, what was it? Cassandra? Yeah, that sounded right. She flashed a flirtatious smile at one or two of the guys - they were probably too old for her, but it was worth a try.
