Spoilers for TAS.
I have a theory that perhaps Ivypool was given Twigpaw as an apprentice because she could best emphasize with her.
Ivypool always felt alone and overshadowed by Dovewing and even though she wasn't part of the prophecy it effected her negatively because she felt like she had to work extra hard and do a lot more to be seen as special or worthy, hence the dark forest, etc.
Twigpaw is alone a lot because of her situation an she also has a lot of pressure on her due to the prophecy--and the fact that some cats doubt she even is part of it and that makes her scared that she might not be worthy of being in the Clan or good enough, etc.
Considering their experiences, I think they're just a really good fit for each other. Perhaps Bramblestar saw that and that's why Ivypool got another apprentice after she finished training....I think it might've been one of BrightxCloud's kits? IDK. But Ivypool had trained a good number of apprentices for her age, I think.
Anyway, I guess this is less of a theory and more just my thoughts, but I think it works.
