Did anyone else ever want Rosepetal to become deputy? I don’t know where I got this from, but for a long time I was secretly rooting for her. I can’t really remember her now, but I know she had many apprentices. I wanted a background character to be given a chance, and I guess I thought she would be a good match because she was young and had experience. She’s dead now, so that’s not going to happen. I also didn’t read whatever arc it was where she died, so maybe she doesn’t deserve it, but I never got that far to know. I just remember thinking that back in the day.
Anyone else? Or are there any other background characters you wish would’ve been given a chance that got killed off?

ME. I DID. I really, truly thought Rosepetal would become deputy even if only for a short while. Or perhaps become relevant in some other way… She was Squirrelflight’s apprentice, mentored several cats herself including Bristlefrost, and had a cute personality even if she was never the center of attention herself. It felt like a total missed opportunity to randomly kill her off in a battle, I’m pretty upset they did that still even now. I’m guessing it was so Ivypool could become deputy next but even still the delivery felt pretty pointless imo.
Though I think they have a habit of killing off mildly interesting characters which could have been given a bit more use in general, Foxleap and Icecloud both dying at the same time way back in OotS come to mind. I think Foxleap and Icecloud could’ve become fan favorites if given more time, Foxleap in particular was fairly popular for awhile though so much time has passed since his death most people have forgotten.

No, not really, but I didn't want her to get iced either, only for Daisy's sake. Regardless of how many apprentices she had or who she was mentored by, I just didn't see her being a candidate, not when there were stronger picks like Lionblaze and Ivypool in the same clan. She never showed "leadership" qualities either, and always gave me the impression she'd just be another background character that would have kits, and become irrelevant.

They kill off the bg characters with personalities because the writers know their deaths will impact the reader harder than the bg cats who’ve never had a speaking line. It raises the stakes for the plot when they die. The problem, of course, is that there are so few bg characters with distinct personalities and they always kills them off to the point where there’s never more than a handful at a time, which leads to the clan feeling un-intimate and “empty” to the reader. But yeah, if a death gets teased or a bg character suddenly becomes relevant to the plot, in this series that’s usually a sign they will die later for shock value. |
