Does anyone else think that there’s a LOT of potential to delve into the reactions of Berryheart’s former Clanmates and her kin after the attack she led on ShadowClan and her death in Star? Obviously there’s her mate and kits, who are all very interesting to me, but there’s other cats that intrigue me as well.
Her funeral is especially interesting to me. We have Sparrowtail, Hollowspring, Sunbeam and Spireclaw, who are expected. We have Snowbird and Yarrowleaf, which is to be expected. Snowbird was her mother and one of her supporters, and Yarrowleaf was her younger sister, one of her followers, and the cat that she refused to kill, even on Splashtail’s orders, which led to her death. And we have Whorlpelt, one of her followers and the cat whose death she almost causes at the lake, and one of the most interesting ShadowClan cats right now, in my opinion, because of it.
But it’s even more interesting who isn’t there. And this time I don’t think it was because the authors forgot, given Snowbird and Yarrowleaf being acknowledged as Berryheart’s kin, and Whorlpelt being present as well.
Scorchfur, her father, and Cloverfoot, her littermate, aren’t present for her burial. I find that extremely interesting, especially when we look at their relationships before Berryheart’s turn against the Clan. Scorchfur is shown to care for his kits many times, shown especially with how he stands up for Yarrowleaf in AVOS. Cloverfoot is shown in Berryheart’s comic at the end of Tigerheart’s Shadow to care for her sister and worry about her. Yet neither of them come to Berryheart’s funeral, likely due to her betrayal of them.
I’d love to delve more into the cats in Berryheart’s life following her death. I want to see how they reacted and how they view her after she betrayed them. We see bits and pieces and get implications, but it would be nice to see the bigger picture. I want to see cats be angry! I want to see Scorchfur disown his kit after she endangers him and her sisters. I want to see Cloverfoot denounce Berryheart’s plans and her xenophobia. I want to see how Sparrowtail and Hollowspring cope in ShadowClan after how they turned on them. I want to see Whorlpelt come to terms with the fact that the cat he looked up to was LAUGHING as he nearly drowned, and realizing that Berryheart was wrong about half-Clan relationships. I want to see Fringewhisker want to support her mate but not being able to forgive Berryheart, obviously. I want to see Spireclaw being apathetic after how she treated him and his mate. I want to see how Tigerstar reacted after a cat he considered a friend at one point turned against him and denounced the foundations of his relationship with Dovewing.
And I want to see complex feelings! Who still thinks Berryheart was right? Who thinks she was wrong? Who thinks that Berryheart’s xenophobia was right, but RiverClan wrong to attack, and vice versa? How will these cats cope with a loved one turning out how she did, other than Sunbeam? There’s really a lot of potential!
Hopefully we get to see a bit of these feelings through Tawnypelt’s POV, but it seems unlikely, especially given the timeskip. Maybe with the suspected changing POV’s, one of these cats whose perspective I’m interested in will take over, but probably not.
I wish novellas were still a thing. The cats of both RiverClan and ShadowClan this arc are so interesting to me, and are a reason ASC is my favorite arc. Unfortunately, I know that I, the one person who is interested in Whorlpelt’s character, will likely not be fed in cannon. Maybe I’ll get lucky if there is more Sparrowtail, Hollowspring and Spireclaw content. They seem the most likely of anyone to get even a scrap, other than Sunbeam, of course.
