dumbest things you used to lie about online?

I used to lie about the fact that i owned a computer cuz I didn’t used to, but I guess I thought people would think I was dumb for having an iPad instead of one and now I have

Oh I've been STUPID stupid

When I was 13 I was super into transformice and accidentally became friends with a bunch of cool adult people, so I decided I was 19 years old and hella cool and mature. I got into a "relationship" with this other 19 year old, he then suddenly ghosted me and I cried. I then thought I "fell in love" with this 18 year-old French girl (I still remember her username... vathk my beloved) we were very close and talked a whole lot, she came online less and less and one day said she didn't feel good and never logged on again. Devastated me and I still have no clue what happened. Thought about her for months. Then I became friends with this 28 year old guy from Argentina and I still remember his name too. And our friendship was entirely inappropriate and not kid friendly at all but I don't blame him because he thought I was 19. I'm not messed up from it and recognize it's my fault. But yeah that's probably up there as the dumbest...

i was the type of person who would lie if i thought it made things funnier. like for example with spelling mistakes i might make a spelling mistake, correct it, and then uncorrect it and send the wrong version because i thought it was funnier

or if i was cold and my hands were shaky i would ttype llikee thsi evene if ffit wasssn't that coldd out bc i thought it was funny

or if i was tired i wouldn't actually be really delirious and fantasizing about hot lemonade, but i would be delirious enough to think that fantasizing about hot lemonade was like sobbing from laughing levels of funny, so i guess i wasn't lying about being delirious when i was tired back then, just about the type of delirious that i was

i'm ngl i still lie about/exaggerate minor things if i think it's funny but not to the same extent. like if i fall asleep on my keyboard and wake up in the middle of the night to a bunch of nonsense on the message bar i WILL be hitting send and in the morning if i do remember hitting send (usually i don't LMAO) i'll pretend i don't because it enhances the joke

i remember being like 13 in 2011 and seeing someone saying that had been reading warriors since they first came out in 2003 (it was dawnwing). and it made me mad?? even though warriors came out when i was 5 when i couldn't read yet, i lied and said that my mom read the books to me when they first came out so that way i could ALSO claim to have been a fan since day 1.

why did i do that

Growing up I was raised to be a liar so it could be any number of things. I can't recall actually lying about anything since my online interactions have only ever been on WCF and PSN. Though, on PSN I actually made a lot of enemies so at one point, to get away from it, I told my friends to tell the people, who were essentially harassing me, that I had died. Then I swapped accounts. Well, I ended up losing access to the internet for over a year so it reinforced the idea.

My friend then got caught saying he had spoken to me in which someone asked how that was possible. He proceeded to make the most outlandish excuse ever:

"I thought he did because of an asthma attack?"

Friend: "Oh no no no"

"So he's alive?"

"uh no. You see when he was leaving the hospital he was hit by a bus and died."

There are people to this day who think I'm dead due to this. Sadly, like idiots, they told everyone I knew and not just the haters so I had to explain a lot.


Only other thing I could think of is lying about having a child because of this one guy who was also lying about having a child (second time and also one of the haters from the previous example). I wanted him to shut up lol. Stupid young me, if I ever lie again I hope I step on a Lego.

I pretended to be Korean to shut a weeaboo up about their stupid worship of Japan and them bullying me for wanting to watch what are essentially cartoons in English. Japan’s a nice country, but it’s not perfect. It has a very questionable history with the Koreas now due to stuff from WW2 when Japan occupied it and later its refusal to recognize the crimes it committed there. I had my cousin-in-law— who is Korean— type up stuff in Korean for me. The weeaboo had no idea what was being said and claimed I was making up words. XD

That happened when I was a teen. I didn’t really interact with people online as a kid because I was horrible at spelling and didn’t like chat rooms. Forums became my go to as a teen though.

oh yeah, i definitely lied about my age on the old wcf. i used to pretend i was a 16 yo guy. i even had a forum mate and everything lol. back then i thought forum mate = internet best friend so there was never anything truly romantic between us in my mind at least.

i also pretended to be a guy on animaljam and ended up with an aj gf. looking back on it... i'm not sure if i had real feelings for her or not; it was such a long time ago and we were really young. like, 12-14, i think. we had a little friend group and one time when she wasn't online her friends all threatened me if i ever "broke her heart" lmao. we made a ship name out of our usernames and called ourselves "Crash." it lasted 2 or 3 years. eventually we ended up emailing each other and then she sent me a photo of herself and wanted to video chat and i panicked and prayed that she would move on with no hard feelings abt it. i had been pretending to be a guy all this time and occasionally "sharing" my aj account with "my twin sister" and didn't want to admit it. thankfully i didn't have to do anything because she dear johned me and i deleted that email address and i don't think she ever came online in aj again after that. so. that whole thing prooobably should have been my first hint that i wasn't straight. xD

i still think about her every long once in awhile and wonder what she's up to now. she was my best friend at a time in my life when i really needed one, and that relationship - whether it was platonic or romantic - meant a lot to me. i actually met her through a warriors roleplay on animaljam so TheMagicCreamPuff if you're out there thanks for being my bsf and possible gay awakening and i'm sorry i messed with your feelings when i was a dumb middle schooler lol.

when men went off to war and were stationed somewhere far overseas they often left behind girlfriends / fiancees / wives. sometimes those partners would get tired of waiting for him or she'd find someone else while he was away and would send him a letter breaking up with him or asking for a divorce. "john" is just a standard placeholder name.

what i meant in this context was she sent me a final email telling me that she'd moved on, officially ending our relationship.

i used to pretend to be a boy on club penguin when i was like 11 and pretend to be married to other players. no idea why. i guess i thought penguin cross-dressing was funny.

Oh these stories about pretending to be a boy reminded me that I also did that. Back in 2019 or 2020, can’t remember which one (I think this was around similar time to the Roblox thing) little me was part of this small community in this survival game called Dynasty.io. Community was heavily male dominated and for some reason ten year old me wanted to fit I guess so I pretended to be a boy. Also in one server I said I was a girl and some guy was very sexist to me so uh yeah.

I didn't lie a lot on the internet, I was like Buster in thinking that lying on the web is wrong and nobody could do that lol.

That being said, I didn't understand what personas were and just used my favourite OCs as such. For a while, lots of people thought I was a guy because I used male OCs as my persona lol. I recently learned that Brambleheart (my current and almost decade-old persona) started out as a tom in late 2014/early 2015.

Anyways that revelation started a lot of questions for me lol, perhaps I was a little right with my persona's pronouns haha.
