Chapter 27: The wildcat accuses them of trying to steal prey. Ivypool tries to insist otherwise, but the tom cuts them off and says they're thieves. He snarls they need to get out. Icewing demands to know who he thinks he is. The tom begins raising his hackles, and Ivypool doesn't think both of them can take on a singular wildcat. Ivypool tells him about Galestar, and he freezes, demanding to know what they know of her. Ivypool says it's a long story, but they know two other wildcats with kits. His gaze softens and asks about the kits. He asks if they're Clan cats, as it's been many many seasons since a Clan cat has been on the territory. Icewing and Ivypool ask what he knows of the Clans. He says he's not a Clan cat, but he has their blood as a descendant of StormClan. Icewing mews that so is Ivypool. The tom snorts, and says he doesn't believe them. Icewing, annoyed, clears some twigs and draws Whistlepaw's symbol on the ground, asking if it means anything to him.
He demands to know how they possibly knew what it is. Ivypool says their medicine cat saw it in a vision, and Galestar explained what it meant. He seems even more surprised that they spoke with Galestar herself, and then reiterates that if Ivypool truly descends from StormClan, then they share blood. Icewing curtly asks him to get on with it. After some moments, he apologizes, saying it's his job to keep the wildcats safe. Ivypool says it's fine, thinking of the border patrols that Clan cats do. He introduces himself as Strike Slash, and he's going to bring them to the elders.
Although not hostile, Strike certainly isn't being friendly as he leads them towards the camp. As they find the camp, the she-cats note that the wildcats all have the same strong bodies and tabby pelts as Stalk and Tumble. Strike nuzzles a she-cat near the entrance, introducing her as Wish Stalk and his mate. Strike then leads them, Wish Stalk following, to a group of three older cats near a small stream, explaining that elders are responsible for making decisions and talking with the ancestors. Ivypool mews that elders mostly tell stories to the younger cats, and have earned their rest for all their years of service for the Clan. Strike looks confused, and says that the elders have the strongest connection to their ancestors. He adds that they need to treat them respectfully. Ivypool mutters to Icewing that he must not think they know proper manners.
All three elders have shrinking muscles and graying pelts in the tabby fur. There are two toms and a she-cat. The she-cat looks proud, impressing Ivypool, while one of the toms has a slashed ear and the other tom has a pelt darker than the other wildcats. Strike and Wish bow their heads respectfully, and so Ivypool and Icewing do the same.
Prowl Sleek, the she-cat, greets them. Spring Claw is the darker tabby tom, while Hunt Growl has the slashed ear. Ivypool and Icewing introduce themselves. Strike explains they claim to be Clan cats. Prowl mutters so it seems, and asks them to explain themselves. Ivypool and Icewing share their story thus far. As they do, the elders listen in silence. Ivypool expected them to be welcoming, but the three of them look on with intense doubt. Spring Claw asks why Clan cats would come all this way to free wildcats, since he thought all the Clans forgot about them. Ivypool mews it's true, until Whistlepaw had a vision about repaying the debt. Hunt Growl lets out a sour meow and grumbles they'll be the judge of that. They gave up hope that there were other wildcats around, and for now, they need to discuss and confirm their story. Prowl says they're going to be kept under guard until then.
Ivypool and Icewing share a bewildered glance. Her relief now filled with fear, she had thought they'd be welcomed with the news they brought, but now they're being held as captives instead.

Chapter 28: Strike Slash leads the she-cats to a spot surrounded by bramble thicket, ordering them to wait there. Neither Clan cat is happy, though Icewing says to just give them time. Ivypool worries that Tumble, Stalk, and their kits won't be able to grow up in a proper home otherwise. As they gaze around the camp, a single kit with green eyes comes over to them and says she's Hop Scratch. She asks where they came from, why their pelts are funny colors, and if they're kits too. To Ivypool's surprise, Hop Scratch is almost as big as them. Icewing mews that they came from a long ways away, and there's many cats with their pelt color. Ivypool introduces themselve, but Hop thinks they have funny names. She asks them to play with her, but the she-cats decline. Hop sadly mews her littermate died, and there's not other kits around. Icewing and Ivypool elect to tell her stories instead.
Hop Scratch's mother and greets them, introducing herself as Claw Stretch. Hop excitedly says they're telling her stories. Claw says she's heard of Clan cats, but never met one, asking to listen as well. Icewing says she's more than welcome to. Gradually, two or three other wildcats drift over to listen to Ivypool and Icewing. They're surprised when they talk about freeing Tumble and Stalk, and laugh upon hearing how the Clan cats helped them escape. After this, they're asked to join them for some prey. Icewing goes, but Ivypool and Claw Stretch talk about losing kits, and Claw offers her sympathies, since losing a kit of her own was the hardest thing she went through. Ivypool mentions how Bristlefrost died and now her spirit is gone forever.
Claw mews she doesn't intend to be disrespectful, but how Ivypool describe's the afterlives isn't how she sees it. When a cat dies, they go to an afterlife as the Clan cats do. But when the cat in the afterlife is forgotten by all cats, they return to the elements and spread out into the world, so ultimately nothing is really lost. She asks Ivypool if perhaps she can sense that Bristlefrost is still around, even if she can't be seen. Ivypool desperately wishes it could be true, but it feels wrong. It's Claw Stretch's belief, not hers, and it's difficult to imagine it being the same for the Clan cats. Ivypool witnessed with her own eyes that if someone dies in the Dark Forest, then they're gone forever.
But as she thinks, she looks upwards and sees a patch of the sky that resembles Bristlefrost's blue-green eyes. For a moment, the faintest sense of hope enters her heart, and she desperately wants to believe it's true, but can't find it to be so. She wonders if perhaps Claw Stretch is right, or Ivypool is so desperate she'll believe anything. What Claw said aligns with what Stalk told her earlier, but Ivypool still isn't sure.
The three elders approach Ivypool, and Icewing hurries back to her side. Prowl issues a cold stare, and declares they do not believe the Clan cats. Icewing stares at her in disbelief. Ivypool protests they met Galestar and showed the StormClan symbol. Hunt Growl sniffs and says that won't win them over considering the Clans abandoned Galestar. Spring Claw says they know they're lying because they mentioned rescuing other wildcats, and they know for a fact there aren't any wildcats. Ivypool protests that they're being truthful and can prove it. Icewing asks why they think she and Ivypool are lying. Icewing tells them to consult the ancestors if they're really doubtful. Prowl Sleek has a look of longing in her eyes, but meows that there's no need to bother the ancestors, and their decision is final. Hunt adds they're probably in league with the foxes that have been bothering them the past moon.
Ivypool, enraged, screams at them for being so shortsighted and says Clan cats are honorable and would never be in league with foxes. Icewing snaps that they left their Clans and risked their lives to help them. Hunt is about to retort, but Prowl raises her tail and he stays quiet. Prowl says it doesn't matter, and they refuse to accept their story. Spring rakes the she-cats with a malevolent gaze, and barks at the wildcats to drive them out.
Prowl hisses they won't do that to the thieves and liars, but tells Ivypool and Icewing to be gone by morning.

Chapter 25: Ivypool pads along the lakeshore, past the horseplace, toward the RiverClan border. She can just vaguely see another cat, and as she grows closer, she recognizes Icewing. Reaching the border stream, she's surprised that the scent markers are faint and stale. The stream itself is nothing more than a trickle, while clots of blood lodged in the stones of the riverbed. The waterside plants are drooping, their leaves splattered with dark red drops. Ivypool wonders where so much blood came from. Icewing and Ivypool cross the stream towards the RiverClan camp. Upon reaching it, Icewing stands in the middle of the camp, frozen in horror.
Ivypool spots the flayed body of Frostpaw at the edge of the riverbed. Half her body on the shore, half in the river, almost about to be swept away. As Icewing approaches, Frostpaw raises her head and screams "Too late!" before her head falls back and the light from her eyes die. Icewing wails "no!", and the screams echo around the whole camp.
Ivypool awakes with a jerk. Soon, the other cats stir around her. Rootspring sits up and shakes his pelt, remarking he had a bad dream. Ivypool asks what it was about. Rootspring recounts the dream, exactly as Ivypool herself experienced. Dovewing and Ivypool confirm they had the same one, though Ivypool says she didn't see Rootspring there. The four cats then try to find Icewing, who isn't in her nest. They see her sitting on a rock jutting out of the stream. As they approach, Icewing mews with sorrow and anger that her Clan is gone, and she shouldn't have come on the quest knowing they needed her. Rootspring tells her that it was just a dream, and it may not represent anything beyond that. Icewing turns her head, surprised he knows about her dream.
Whistlepaw explains what they all experienced, and Icewing sadly huffs that it must be true then, as it came from StarClan. Whistlepaw insists it may be their way of trying to tell them not to give up hope. Rootspring suggests it's what might happen if they don't repay the debt. Icewing seems to contemplate what they're saying, then meows huskily then it's time to find the other wildcats.
In the morning, the Clan cats do their best to push aside the horrors of the dream, and helping Stalk care for her kits is certainly helping. But at the same time, Ivypool can't help but think of Bristlefrost when seeing the three kits. And she's sure Dovewing and Icewing must feel the same about their lost kits. Icewing and Rootspring had gone off to hunt, and Stalk tells Ivypool that she understands why the Clan cats urged her and Tumble to escape, and thanks her again for helping. Tumble adds that they're thankful they talked to Galestar, and he can't wait to present their kits to the ancestral spirits to receive their full names. Whistlepaw asks him to elaborate, and Tumble explains that the kits only receive the first half of their names from the parents. When they're presented to the ancestors, and depending which ancestor they seem to be connected to, they get the second part of their name.
As time passes on, Ivypool grows antsy. Icewing, having returned from hunting, says they need to plan their next steps. She says the kits are beautiful, but they don't have enough time to wait for them to be fully weaned, apologizing to the parents if it seems harsh. Tumble says not at all, and he appreciates all the help they've being given. Tumble says he is worried about the kits' safety, and suggests sending two cats ahead to try and find the wildcats and modern descendants of StormClan; that way, the quest can continue without risking the health of Stalk or the kits. Ivypool immediately says it's a good idea, and offers to go. Icewing says she will too, to keep her mind off things. Dovewing says she'll stay with Whistlepaw, as she's raised two litters and Whistlepaw is needed to make sure they're all healthy. Rootspring says he'll protect the kits if anything happens to them. Ivypool takes Dovewing aside and asks if she's okay beind around the kits, as they might remind her of Rowankit. Dovewing insists not at all, and they don't look like him at all. She whispers that she feels fine taking care of the kits, and perhaps it means she's healing.
Tumble admits to Ivypool and Icewing that he's unsure about being a father, since the other chances have been taken from him. Ivypool assures he'll be fine since he clearly adores them and Dovewing will be around to help. Stalk wishes them luck, and prays to the ancestors to watch over them. Ivypool and Icewing set off on their own, and Icewing confides that she's very worried about Splashtail. She mews that she thought Splashtail was just a young cat with ambition. What young cat doesn't have ambition? But because of their desperation, they've handed power to the wrong cat and now it looks like the Clans will suffer for it.
Ivypool insists that Splashtail will get what's coming to him. Icewing mutters she hopes so. She wants to bring RiverClan back to what it was under Mistystar's leadership. She hopes that Sunbeam, Nightheart, and Frostpaw are able to keep Duskfur and Mothwing safe. Ivypool is surprised Icewing sounds so upset, as she's normally very stoic and resolved. Ivypool realizes that her own grief has blinded her from the suffering of others around her. Ivypool tells Icewing that if she needs to rant to a sympathetic ear, then Ivypool is there for her. Icewing thanks her, but right now, she wants to focus on finding the wildcats. Not just for Stalk and Tumble, but for RiverClan too. FLAYED??? What? That's a horrifying mental image, just some skinned corpse of Frostpaw screaming at them. Fanartists had better get on that for this Halloween.

Chapter 26: So this chapter is rather uneventful. Ivypool and Icewing hunt and find a lot of genuine respect for the other. Ivypool thinks merging Clans like StormClan is stupid idea, but she wouldn't object to being in the same Clan as Icewing, considering her strong and clever. They cross some paths, find a place to sleep, and Ivypool has a bad dream.
Interestingly, Icewing tells Ivypool that she enjoys mediating, finding it helps center her, though the younger generations seem to have lost the habit and that disappoints her.
They encounter some bats, and Ivypool manages to kill one. They taste it, and decide it's not for them. Icewing catches some fish and Ivypool thinks about how vast the world really is beyond the Clan borders. They keep pressing on, and eventually come across wildcat scent. They finally reach upon a large wildcat. When he sees them, he bares his teeth and looks threatening. Ivypool thinks he isn't very welcoming. This really does seem like they're setting up Icewing to be either leader or deputy. With her age, I would hope it would be the latter; I wouldn't protest an older cat being deputy to offer stability to whoever the new leader is, and then dying before they become leader themselves.
If they aren't setting her up to be important post-Splashtail, I'm not sure why they are suddenly giving her all this character development and repeatedly mentioning how wise and likeable she is. Especially the meditation bit.

Chapter 29: The three elders stalk away, and Icewing growls that it's unbelievable and asks if they really think the came all this way just to tell them lies. Ivypool grumbles they were too confident and thought they'd be welcome because of the connection to StormClan, and they clearly think StormClan to be enemies. Icewing says they should have seen it coming considering the way Galestar talked about them. Ivypool says they can try again in the morning, but worries what will happen to Stalk and Tumble. Icewing grimly adds she doesn't know what will happen to RiverClan.
Ivypool tries to go to sleep, but she can't seem to. She and Icewing then scent a fox, and Ivypool yowls a warning. Icewing leaps up, hissing at more foxes entering. Ivypool leaps at a fox looming over her and claws at its nose, and Icewing attacks its flanks. As dark blood stains its pelt, it runs away in pain. Icewing comments they make a great team. Across the camp, the wildcats are struggling with the foxes. One of them manages to pin down Strike Slash, but Ivypool jumps onto its back and claws at its eyes. The fox rolls over and Strike Slash is able to regain his footing. Unable to shake Ivypool off, she keeps raking her claws down its sides. The fox decides it's had enough, it scrambles free of Ivypool and yelps through a gap between some boulders. Strike Slash exclaims Ivypool fights well, admiration in his amber eyes. Ivypool merely responds she's a warrior.
Another fox is going after Hop Scratch. Hop bares her teeth and swipes at the fox, but it's not phased by her attempt to defend herself. Ivypool races across the camp and barrels into the fox, but another wildcat takes down the fox and leaving Ivypool. Panting, Ivypool regains her paws and finds herself facing Claw Scratch, who thanks Ivypool for saving Hop. Claw then turns around and reprimands her daughter for not staying in a tree and out of the fight, but Hop insists she wanted to help, but thanks Ivypool for saving her.
The fight dies down, and Strike and Icewing drive out the rest of the foxes. Icewing has a scratch on her forehead, but no other injuries. Icewing remarks it was "lively", asking Claw if they often struggle with foxes. She replies not until recently as the foxes just moved into this part of the forest. Claw asks if she's injured, gesturing to Icewing's wound, and says their elders are also healers. Ivypool is hesitant as their last talk with the elders was quite hostile, but obliges for the sake of Icewing's scratch.
The three elders sit beside the stream. Spring Claw is dabbing some herbal poultice onto Wish Stalk's shoulder, while Hunt Growl is examining another wildcat's paw. More wildcats are waiting their turn. Prowl Sleek had risen to her paws and watched Ivypool and Icewing approach. She begins to issue a curt apology, but Hop interjects and squeaks Ivypool saved her life. Prowl says the wildcats owe both Clan cats a great debt. No liars or thieves would have risked their lives to save the wildcats, and so, they wish to invite Ivypool and Icewing to communicate with their ancestors.
The following day, Ivypool and Icewing patiently wait for the elders. Spring Claw has put some herbs on Icewing's wound, but it's a herb that she's never seen before so she plans to ask the medicine cats about it. The elders come over and greet them, asking them to come with them to the spot they meet their ancestors at. The elders lead the way between the boulders and follow a track that wounds it way through the trees, leading steeply upward. By the time they break the forest and go onto a grassy hilltop, Ivypool is exhausted. Chilly gusts of wind ruffle her fur. A spring bubbles up between two boulders. Ivypool and Icewing exchange a nervous glance. Prowl Sleek instructs them to look around, as this is the area the elements combine. Clear air in the open sky, the bubbling spring, and soft earth: their ancestors are facing them.
The three elders sit down, and Spring Claw meows for the ancestors to show themselves, and to show them what to do with the strangecats who have appeared on their territory. Gradually, the elders stiffen, their eyes becoming wide and blank. When Prowl Sleek speaks again, her voice echoes, and Ivypool realizes that an ancestor is speaking through Prowl Sleek. The ancestor utters Ivypool's and Icewing's names, and they remember them from the Star Tree. Aware the the ancestors can somehow see her, Ivypool and Icewing lower their heads in respect. A second ancestor, speaking through Hunt Growl, tells the she-cats that the lost wildcats and their kits need to join their kin. They carry the spirits of their ancestors within them, and it will be a joyful homecoming.
The spirit talking through Spring Claw, however, says that before the lost cats can be accepted, there is something the Clan cats must know.

Chapter 30: Icewing eyes Ivypool, perhaps thinking there's still a chance to save RiverClan. But they look back at the elders and see they've clearly returned and the ancestors are gone. Ivypool asks why they left when they just said they had something to tell them. Prowl Sleek says they must travel to the ancestor's land. Icewing, annoyed, asks them to just tell them. Prowl Sleek blinks and says the information was not shared with them. Ivypool and Icewing are uncertain, as they're not medicine cats and don't know how to enter the afterlife without Whistlepaw. Spring Claw assures them they'll help them. Ivypool doesn't like the idea of travelling all the way back to the Star Tree, but Hunt Growl says there's other ways of doing it.
The elders head back onto the path, and after some travelling, the cats enter a small clearing with a huge hollow log. Prowl Sleek instructs Ivypool and Icewing to go inside. Icewing mutters to just do it. The two enter, and Ivypool tries to clear her mind even with the cramped space. She thinks of her family in ThunderClan, and after hardly any time passes, both she-cats find themselves in a forest, much like the one earlier with Whistlepaw and Rootspring. The she-cats follow a trail in the forest, and upon reaching the edge of some water, they meet Galestar. The two issue a greeting, and Galestar says the two are always welcome on her territory. Galestar explains that ever since she met them, she's been thinking of the past and reliving the pain of being abandoned by Stripestar and StormClan, and asks the two what she can do to ease the pain. Icewing mews she should face it and accept that it happened.
Galestar asks how she's supposed to do that, as all the cats involved are long dead and StormClan doesn't exist anymore. Ivypool declares they need to travel to StarClan and find Stripestar. Galestar says no cat can do that, as it's impossible. Icewing asks if she's even tried. Ivypool says if they can find Stripestar, then perhaps Galestar can find out the truth and get closure. Galestar isn't sure what to say. Ivypool continues, saying Stripestar vanished from StarClan because no cat remembers him, but Galestar remembers him, and she can bring him back along with the memories of StormClan. At the very least, Galestar can get answers. Ivypool isn't sure how to get to StarClan, but Galestar says it's actually quite easy through the River of Spirits: a river that connects all the afterlives together, no matter the culture. Galestar also says that they're the cats who came to help her, and so must be allowed into StarClan.
Icewing is still hesitant, though says it's for the sake of the Clans. She mews if River Ripple hadn't been brave enough to travel down a river, then RiverClan wouldn't exist. Ivypool thinks of the river of blood prophecy, and agrees. Eagerly, Galestar bounds to the edge of the water and hops on a log, and tells them it's time to go.

Chapter 31: The three cats float on the log down the river, and Ivypool is struggling to keep her balance. Icewing assures her that Ivypool won't fall in. As they pass by the shoreline, Galestar points out the ghostly outlines of cats, slipping in and out of sight, as the forgotten spirits of wildcats. Soon, they'll disappear from the afterlife and return to the elements. Farther down the river, they pass by a mountainous landscape where birds of prey hover over snow-covered peaks. Ivypool deduces it must be the Tribe of Endless Hunting. Galestar tells her to concentrate her sights on it. Ivypool does, and sees the waterfall cascading into a pool below. She sees a lone cat trekking across the ledge and behind the waterfall, assuming it must be where the tribe lived.
They pass other terrains after the Tribe of Endless Hunting, and Ivypool wonders if perhaps there's a ghostly outline of Bristlefrost somewhere. Icewing lets out a gasp, and Ivypool sees what is clearly the Dark Forest come into view. Icewing meows she never knew StarClan and the Dark Forest were connected by a river. Galestar says it isn't common or easy knowledge; it's just something the wildcats have grown accustomed to. Ivypool looks longingly in the Dark Forest, thinking of Bristlefrost. Icewing's sharp voice cuts into her thoughts, and brutally tells Ivypool that she can't go there. Ivypool hisses that if she could find Bristlefrost, she would. Icewing snaps that Bristlefrost is gone. She's gone from the living world, and gone from the afterlife; Ivypool needs to accept that.
Ivypool shudders and knows Icewing is right, but a pang in her heart feels regret at possibly losing the chance to confirm it for herself. Then, a voice in Ivypool's head mews "You have a mate and kits who love you. You are Clan deputy. You are needed. There would be such grief and loss if you never returned."
Ivypool wonders if it's Bristlefrost, and whispers that she has a duty to finish the quest. The log floats further down the river, away from the Dark Forest, eventually entering StarClan territory. Icewing and Ivypool begin to get excited, considering it an honor. But then Ivypool's thoughts darken. She had spent so long in her grief that she's neglected her duties as deputy and a Clanmate. She thinks of how she trained in the Dark Forest, and killed Antpelt's spirit. She tells Icewing she doesn't deserve to be here. Icewing mews they don't deserve it, as it's a gift. The three cats hop onto solid ground, and two cats make their way towards them. Ivypool recognizes Tallstar from the stories from the elders, and a wiry brown she-cat with yellow eyes.
Tallstar greets them, and introduces Windstar. Surprised the founder of WindClan is here, she stammers a thanks to them. More spirits approach, recognizing Mistystar, and Ivypool deduces that one of the cats is Thunderstar, dipping her head in respect to him. Riverstar appears as well. Icewing is giddy about seeing Mistystar and Riverstar. Ferncloud is also there, with Rowankit along with two other kits. Ivypool happily greets Ferncloud, recalling how Ferncloud helped look after Ivypool when she was a kit. Ferncloud frets that Ivypool died, but Ivypool assures her it's not the case, and says she's going to tell Dovewing that Rowankit is being looked after by her.
Thunderstar meows for the meeting to start. Ivypool and Icewing explain the history of StormClan and Galestar, but none of the StarClan cats know what they're talking about. Only Windstar has a vague idea of what they're talking about. Windstar says that when things disappear from the memories of living cats, soon StarClan forgets it too. Icewing is in disbelief that not a single one of them can remember it. Galestar explains they merged Clans for love, but nobody seems really impressed. Ferncloud asks how could she keep a secret like two Clan leaders falling in love. Thunderstar asks if she had bees in her brain, just merging Clans and changing the whole structure of things. Galestar mentions Whitebreeze and Swiftwing of WindClan were against it, as was Shadebush of ThunderClan, but through arguments, they came to accept it.
Galestar says not everyone liked it, and it was a tough choice to choose to leave, and encountered so many dangers, but having kits with Stripestar was worth it. Ivypool notices whispy ghost-like outlines materialize around them. Galestar sees them, and her voice spews with anger as the says they're the former StormClan cats, and the ones who betrayed her.

Chapter 32: As Galestar speaks her accusation, Tallstar murmurs they're reappearing because they're being remembered. Windstar points out Whitebreeze (gray-and-white she-cat) and Swiftwing (black tom). Riverstar gestures to a plump ginger tom as Rosebush, who was always argumentative. As the others become fully formed StarClan cats, Ivypool sees a brown tabby tom with amber eyes materialize, and Galestar hisses it's Stripestar. Ivypool asks where he's been, and Stripestar says he's been kind of everywhere: part of the wind, the grass, the trees, and everything. He wasn't watching them as StarClan cats usually do, but he was there. Ivypool wonders if it means Bristlefrost is truly one with the elements as well, and if it proves the wildcats right. She wants to tell Icewing perhaps it means Bristlefrost and Beetlewhisker aren't truly gone, but Icewing is watching Stripestar with glowing eyes, perhaps reaching the same realization.
Galestar is angry, and says Stripestar deserved the Dark Forest. Ivypool wonders if the two will fight even in the sacred hunting grounds, but Stripestar insists he didn't willingly abandon her. He still loves her, and would not have done anything to harm her or their kits. He explains that he had to lead the other StormClan cats to safety or else they all would have died. Some of Galestar's hostility dies away, and Stripestar continues, saying that as soon as the storm ended, he went out to search for them, but they could never be found, and so he believed them to have been dead. For the rest of his life he mourned them. Galestar grumbles she didn't die, much to his surprise, and Galestar explains the wildcats found her and took her in. She found a new mate and had new kits. Stripestar is hurt, but he clearly makes an effort to push the feeling away. He says it's hard to know she moved on from him when he was still grieving, and it's painful to know his kits grew up and he couldn't see it happen. He says that nobody in StormClan could bear the thought that she died, and everyone suffered for it. More wispy shapes of former StormClan cats appear, murmuring apologies to Galestar.
Thunderstar asks how they could have forgotten such an important era of Clan history. Windstar suggests everyone simply wanted to forge, StarClan included. Thunderstar mews that he thinks there's more to StormClan's history than what's being said. Ivypool and Icewing conclude StormClan needs to be brought back to StarClan. Icewing asks if their wisdom is what's needed to save RiverClan. Nobody says anything, until Stripestar mews he hopes it will be needed to save all the Clans. Ivypool asks what happened to all the Clans while they were gone. Icewing asks Riverstar if Whistlepaw's vision of the red river has come true. Riverstar looks at her with warmth and wisdom, and says she needs to remember all she's learned. StarClan's hunting grounds grows dark and fades away, leaving Ivypool to ask what happened to the Clans back home.

Chapter 33: Darkness envelopes the she-cats, and they appear back in the hollow log. They exit, and are surprised to see the three elders still there. Prowl asks if they got the answers they needed. Ivypool thinks so, but they also have more questions. Icewing impatiently says they need to be on their way. Prowl blinks wisely and says she thinks all will be revealed in time. The cats then head back to the wildcat camp. Strike Slash and Wish Stalk greet them, and say they're going to come with Ivypool and Icewing to get the new wildcats. Claw Stretch says she will too, to assure the new mother of what to expect. Hop Scratch squeals she'll have new friends to play with. Prowl Sleek says she'll come too, as she wants to give a proper welcome. Icewing says they need to move swiftly, but Prowl says not to worry about it.
On the second day of the journey to get the wildcats and bring them to the camp, they approach the Clan cats and two wildcats. Whistlepaw hollers a greeting. The kits mew excitedly. Dovewing purrs a greeting and says they did a good job. Claw Stretch mews that the kits are beautiful, and she has a kit of her own. Tumble Leap happily mews he's glad they're not the last of their kind. Stalk Purr says she's excited to join them. Prowl Sleek stands some tail lengths back, and thanks the ancestors for bringing them all together. The topic of mentors comes up, and Prowl explains an ancestor will guide the kits and help teach them. Dovewing asks if they assign mentors, explaining to Strike Slash that at six moons old, a kit becomes an apprentice and the clan leader chooses a mentor to help teach them everything from hunting to the warrior code. Strike says they kind of do that, but kits aren't assigned to a specific cat. Other cats will help the kit learn, but they are bound to the spirit. Tumble says it's a wonderful thing, recalling his own spirit guide and he's glad his kits will be able to have it too. Whistlepaw and Ivypool asks how the ancestors will connect with the kits, and Prowl says the ancestors will come to the kits when the time comes. Prowl intends to the ceremony for it tonight.
The ceremony takes place in the middle of the night, and so the cats begin to prepare. Dovewing tells Ivypool that taking care of Stalk Purr's newborn kits reminded her of when she was in the nursery looking after Birchkit and Rowankit. It made her feel better, and although she misses Rowankit, she's glad to have known him. Ivypool tells Dovewing that she and Icewing visited StarClan, and mews that Ferncloud is looking after Rowankit, and he seems happy and playing with other kits. Dovewing purrs that she's glad it's Ferncloud looking after him, and she was such a good caretaker for them back in ThunderClan. Ivypool, affection growing in her heart, knows that even though they were in different Clans, she never stopped caring for her sister. Ivypool softly meows that one day Dovewing will see him again, and she knows he'll be happy to see her. Some pain goes into Ivypool's heart as she knows it's not something she'll experience with Bristlefrost.
Prowl Sleek begins instructing the other cats to form a circle, ordering everyone to clear their minds. After a while, she opens her eyes and sees the spirits of the wildcats. She sees two who actually look like Clan cats, and assumes they're Galestar's kits. The Clan cats murmur in surprise, while Tumble and Stalk look on in amazement. Prowl declares that the family is joining them, and asks the ancestors to look after and guide their kits. One of the spirit cats goes forward towards Pounce, the smallest kit, and she rests her muzzle on his little head. She says her name is Whisper Claw, and she shall watch over him, naming him Pounce Whisper. One after another, two more spirits do the same for the newly-named Stretch Blink and Hunt Leap.
Prowl thanks them for welcoming the kits, and pledges to raise them with the strength and wisdom they have. Two more wildcats appear, and Tumble mews he knows them. Leap Growl and Purr Roll introduce themselves as Tumble's and Stalk's spirit guides, and to their regret they have been unable to reach either of them up until now. Leap Growl says they will watch over them again now that they've reconnected with their kin. Tumble says they're honored. Stalk mews they bring them happiness.
Ivypool sees the spirit cats fade, only leaving the living cats. Stalk Purr murmurs thanks to the Clan cats. Tumble says he can't imagine still being held captive by that twoleg, and after two unhealthy litters, they certainly weren't expecting one that would be healthy and be able to live with the rest of their kin. Stalk says it's all thanks to the Clan cats. Prowl thanks them as well, as they've brought the new family to them. She mews that Galestar resented the Clans, but Prowl says in her mind, that's in the past, and the debt is repaid. She tells them the wildcats and the Clans shall always be connected, joined by blood and friendship. Rootspring says it goes both ways, and they wildcats can reach them through StarClan. Ivypool notices he's looking at them with a bittersweet look in his eyes, and knows he had formed a bond with the wildcats and it would be hard for him to say goodbye. Ivypool thinks he deserves to be a father, and although it would hurt for the family to not be with Bristlefrost, she knows it's not about her, and Rootspring has his whole life ahead of him Ivypool can't keep using Rootspring to keep the memory of Bristlefrost alive. She knows she should move on too, and she'll support Rootspring the best she can.
All the cats bow their heads in mutual respect. Icewing murmurs, half to herself, half out loud, that they should return to the Clans and see what Splashtail has done.

Chapter 34: Rootspring and Dovewing had set out at dawn to hunt before they all leave. Ivypool and Icewing explain to the wildcats that since the debt was repaid, they need to hurry home. Both she-cats were worried about their Clans, and the wildcats listen with tension. Ivypool hopes they're not too late. After Rootspring and Dovewing return with prey, they all share one last meal before parting ways. Rootspring is saying goodbye to the kits, and Ivypool thinks he'll make a good father. Prowl leads the way downriver, but Tumble and Stalk thank the Clan cats again for their help and very much wish to see the Clan cats again. Ivypool says she hopes so too. Prowl calls the wildcats over, and Tumble and Stalk leave with their kits. Some dread fills Ivypool's stomach, knowing that now she and her friends have to face what's going on at the Clans. But she knows that she has cats like Fernsong, Flipclaw, and Thriftear to help her. And now that she's deputy, she has the Clan to consider. Icewing urges them to get going, and she begins leading them up the hill back towards the lake territories. Ivypool takes a last glance at the cave she found for Stalk Purr to give birth. She thinks of the wildcat belief that Bristlefrost was in the earth, air, and water. She wants to believe it's true, but isn't sure if she can. She murmurs to herself that she'll always remember this place, and the friends she made along the way.
The Clan cats make good time travelling through the hills. They made a temporary den among bushes at a cliff to rest for the night. When she falls asleep, Ivypool wakes up in the Dark Forest. She hears yowls and screeches from the bottom of the slope, spotting Bristlefrost fighting grimly against the hordes of Dark Forest cats. Ivypool charges down the slope, hurling herself at Bristlefrost's side, but when she reaches her, the spirits disappear, leaving only Bristlefrost at her mother's side. Purring, Bristlefrost says Ivypool never lost her, and she only needs to look for her.
Ivypool wakes up, the pale light of morning peaking through the bushes. She longs to see her daughter again, but rises out of her nest and slides out of the bushes until she reaches the bank of a stream. It reminds her of the place she and Rootspring met to remember Bristlefrost. As she thinks about him, Rootspring pads up to her and mews he dreamed of Bristlefrost. She was just like she was when she was alive, and she was safe, happy, and at peace. Ivypool mews she had a dream about her too, and says perhaps the wildcats are right about Bristlefrost being all around them, even if she's not in StarClan.
As she speaks, a white stag appears at the other side of the bank. It picks it's way from the undergrowth and lowers it's head to drink, looking glorious in the morning sunbeams. Ivypool freezes, figuring it's kin to the deer she sees at the lake, but it's so different despite being so similar. The stag lifts it's head and looks at her, and for a moment, it reminds Ivypool of Bristlefrost's calm, contented gaze. She realizes that the stag isn't a threat; she can draw a breath and admire it's beauty. After another long look at the cats, the stag turns away and disappears into the trees.
Ivypool breath gets caught in her throat. She thinks wholeheartedly and without a doubt, that the wildcats are right. Bristlefrost was not lost, she is everywhere even if she can't be seen. Seeing the stag was a gift to her and Rootspring that somewhere, Bristlefrost was still there and something of her survived.
Rootspring mews that Bristlefrost must be here with them, looking less stressed. Ivypool purrs a relief, feeling like the journey had actually helped her grieve and find her purpose, though not in the way she imagined. She and Icewing restored the memory of StormClan to StarClan, but Ivypool knows she won't ever see her daughter again. The void in Ivypool's heart has been filled with understanding of the world, and enriched by the vast beauty. All the places where Bristlefrost can be. Rootspring mews he realizes he has to move on and change. Ivypool asks if he'll find a mate. Rootspring waits several heartbeats, and replies at last that he thinks he will. Caring for the wildcats showed him he wants a family, though he doesn't know who the mother will be. Ivypool suggests Wrenflight. Rootsrping shakes his head, saying Wrenflight is an attractive she-cat but she's kind of a mouse brain. He says the cat he chooses can never replace Bristlefrost, but must instead be worthy of her.
Ivypool thinks it's an incredible burden for a she-cat to bear, but knows Rootspring would choose the best. Ivypool says it breaks her heart knowing that Rootspring and Bristlefrost won't be together, she wants him to move on too. They both need to look forward, not back. Rootspring meows it's perhaps best for them to take a break from the meetings at the lake. Ivypool says they'll still see each other at gatherings, and Rootspring happily mews they'll always be friends. The thought of gatherings makes Ivypool think of the Clans again. She isn't sure what turmoil awaits them back home, but she wants to see her family again. She knows she can be the strong depuuty, and perhaps even leader one day, of ThunderClan. She knows Bristlefrost isn't truly gone, and that means everything to her.
Bristlefrost is here, and at the lake, and everywhere around them. Ivypool knows her daughter would be cheering her on as the Clan cats return home, ready to face whatever is waiting for them. And that's the end of the book! Sorry it took longer than expected. Had to balance work and school between this.

And that's a wrap! Overall, I think I'm gonna like this SE, if only for the lore of it all. Thanks, Hollyfall!

@hollyfall what’s your overall thoughts, rating and general consensus on the book?. Besides the earthshaking lore developments. I’ve avoided most of the spoilers except the really big stuff, and will get my copy later today. How was Ivypool’s arc and the rest of the traveling groups characters handled, and pacing overall?.

Chapter 32: As Galestar speaks her accusation, Tallstar murmurs they're reappearing because they're being remembered. Windstar points out Whitebreeze (gray-and-white she-cat) and Swiftwing (black tom). Riverstar gestures to a plump ginger tom as Rosebush, who was always argumentative.
quick question about some of the new names here (ultimately doesn't matter because it will inevitably be answered by SE 18) ok so are Shadebush and Rosebush the same cat just a Classic Warriors Mistake, or are they two different cats? is it possible to tell here?

Thank you so much for taking the time to write up all these chapter summaries for us, Hollyfall! I'm pretty excited to read through this book myself (hopefully soon) as it sounds like quite a ride.

Overall I think this was really good! The last time we had an Ivypool perspective was back in OotS so it was refreshing to see a matured and developed version of the character. I'm not a parent myself, but I really cannot imagine the pain of outliving your child, let alone knowing said child is effectively wiped from existence and you won't ever see them again. Ivypool's grief and struggle to move on felt very raw and realistic. She could connect with Dovewing over losing a child, but Rowankit was in StarClan. She can connect with Icewing over knowing your kit is gone forever, but Icewing has majorly moved on. She can connect with Rootspring over Bristlefrost specifically, but Root and Bristle were in love, and Bristle was Ivypool's daughter so it's not quite the same understanding of grief, in a way?
The main focus relationship of Ivypool's was Bristlefrost, but the small bits of her relationships with Dovewing, Fernsong, Flipclaw, and Thriftear were good as well. Ivypool also rekindling with Dovewing as good. I also appreciated her and Icewing bonding over knowing they'll never see one of their kits again. In the text at least, the two of them had good chemistry and bounced off each other very well. The weakest relationship was with Whistlepaw simply because the others could relate to Ivypool's situation, while Whistlepaw really couldn't. The five Clan cats were pretty strong and consistent throughout though, and I liked seeing Icewing and Whistlepaw fleshed out more as characters. Many characters such as the main five, Tumble, Stalk, Slate, Beach, and the wildcats were really good.
Ivypool's arc specifically was really well done. Coming to terms that she needs to move on and while it's sad that she'll never see Bristlefrost again, she does have those who matter to her in ThunderClan and accepting that Bristlefrost is dead. Obviously she'll take the chance that Bristlefrost is part of the elements now, but even if it's not true, she'll do what it takes to remember her daughter. Also caught between the quest and her own personal issues tied together nicely. I'm not sure if I'd call it PTSD or trauma, but the one dream sequence of Ivypool in the Dark Forest and facing Flametail and Brokenstar makes it seem like there might be some unresolved issues there. But it was only there once and never brought up again, so it's anyone's guess.
I know some people will argue the development of more afterlives and how they're all connected is a retcon of sorts, but personally I disagree. It's established that what we already know is effectively only what the Clans themselves know, and there's different groups and cultures who have different interpretations of what comes after death. Like real world societies and cultures, there's similiarities between them but they differ in various ways, which I think is really cool. It's not so much saying what was established earlier is no longer canon, but rather it's what the Clans themselves know and there's different cultures of these cats that offer different understandings and building upon these different groups such as the wildcats, Tribe, Sisters, and Clans. It does seem like there's some sort of common factor or external force based on the River of Spirits connecting all the afterlives though.
IMO the book leaves it a bit ambiguous as to whether spirits such as Bristlefrost or Beetlewhisker are truly "with the elements" or simply gone. As I said above, I wouldn't say it's retconning so much as it is offering alternative ways of thinking. At the same time though, I think it opens up interesting questions about what specifically happens when everyone across the living world and afterlives forget about something or someone. It seems they pass onto the elements as per the wildcats, but StormClan cats such as Stripestar were able to be brought back when cats learned of him. Was the white stag truly Bristlefrost visiting Ivypool and Rootspring? What about characters like Spottedleaf or Snowtuft who were killed as spirits? Are they also one with the elements?
I did quite like the wildcats and learning about their culture and ways of life. Tumble and Stalk were alright characters, and several of the other wildcats like Prowl Sleek and Strike Slash grew on me. StormClan I'm...unsure on. To me it makes sense that at one point some Clans would try to merge and try something new and fail, having it all lost to history since this happens all the time in the real world. Especially when the Clans keep their history through oral tradition and details can become skewed over time. Like, SkyClan leaving the forest was, what, 20 years before Firestar came into the picture? And none of the living cats knew what it was. Windstar also says perhaps StarClan wanted to forget about the whole StormClan drama, hence why nobody save for the founders knew about it, but feels a little contrived.
This might just be me, but I also didn't care much for Galestar or Stripestar. Cool story, but I really wasn't invested in it as much as I was other things. Others have mentioned it, and while it could be because it's "new", it feels a little fanfiction-like? Perhaps in time that will change.
I'd love to learn more about how it formed and the divisions it caused since Galestar mentions it caused severe backlash. Like there was enough to cause the whole giant Clan to leave, but enough cats from there still existed and went back to form ThunderClan and WindClan. Unless I missed it, we also don't know what happened to StormClan? We know Galestar's descendants live on in the modern wildcats, but what about the other cats led by Stripestar? What happened to them? Did they return to the Clans, or just splinter off and disband like SkyClan did?
Pacing could have been improved though. There's several scenes where, for example, the cats decide to hunt, but run into a problem that prevents it. Then wash-rinse-repeat for a couple other chapters. Or them running away from twolegs. I know they're in uncertain and foreign territories, but it felt a bit overused. A couple chapters could have used a little more plot (for lack of a better word) and felt like mostly filler just to move from point A to point B.
Overall though, a solid 8/10. Has some issues, but it was really good to revisit Ivypool's character and learn more about the lore developments. I love learning about different cultures and while they have differences, there's some notable similarities between them (eg. Anglo-Saxons vs Vikings) so that was really cool to read about.

I was wondering that myself. Both are mentioned once, and only Rosebush is given a description by Riverstar. Though the prefixes give me different visuals for the characters, so I would guess they're two different cats. But as you said, it could be a classic mistake even though the names are only 2-3 pages apart.

I didn't buy it but I looked through it at the bookstore, and there didn't seem to be any manga. Too bad, it seems like there won't be anymore for SEs. I would've liked to see Ivypool's comic design.
RIP SE mangas: 2009-2022 (Bluestar's Prophecy through Onestar's Confession) You will be sorely missed.

Thank you so much for the summaries, Hollyfall! The ending actually made me tear up. I can't believe it's been almost three years since ALITM was released and I still remember so clearly how upset I was over Bristlefrost's death. I think this book gave us all a bit of closure about her and I'm glad this concept of the afterlife was introduced. This was really well written especially through Ivypool's perspective. <3

His work will be missed, the iconic stories at the end of SEs were fantastic! I consider many of them to be pretty much mandatory for the SE, especially Crookedstar’s Promise.
