I’m not eligible for top surgery yet, but I’ve been wondering about it, so if anyone here has had/is soon going to have top surgery, lmk your thoughts. questions: 1) When you get the actual surgery do you have the option to be asleep during it?
2) what are some things you are glad/wish that you had after/during surgery.
3) how did it affect your life afterwards, positively or (not likely but still) negatively?
4) is it true they ask you where you want your nips lol, and if so JUST HOW WHAT HOW DO YOU DECIDE??
5) what kind did you get (keyhole, inverted T, etc.)
6) if you had mtf top surgery, how was that different than what you’ve seen transmasc/ftnb people experience?
7) anything else you want me and other trans/genderqueer people to know?

1) Yes; I don't know of any top surgery where they would let you be awake for it!
2) I'm glad I took plenty of time off of work to recover.
3) It has made my life so much better and given me so much joy and euphoria. Most of the time, I'm not actively thinking about my chest because it feels so natural, but that's part of what makes it amazing. Not binding is amazing. As a competitive swimmer and lifeguard, I love being able to go shirtless. I also feel way more comfortable wearing all sorts of shirts/tops, especially more feminine tops.
4) I don't think they asked me about where I wanted them placed
5) I got keyhole. My chest is now indistinguishable from that of a cis man's chest; there is no visible scarring or dog-earing. People who see me shirtless never suspect that I'm trans. I was eligible for this surgery due to being very small-chested to begin with.
6) N/A. I think MTF top surgery is more rare because hormones such as estrogen and progesterone will usually induce breast growth. I would imagine procedures MTF people have are very similar to a cis woman getting a breast augmentation surgery.
7) Don't rush into getting such a drastic procedure, but also don't let people fear-monger you into thinking you'll regret it just because it's so drastic. Know your options and the risks. Don't have the surgery just because you feel like you should to pass or to feel valid in your identity, have the surgery only if you think having a flat chest would make you more comfortable in your own skin regardless of what society sees you as. If you elect to get top surgery, make sure you trust your surgeon and have seen pictures of previous top surgeries they have performed. Not everyone has their procedure go as well as mine did, so listen to the stories of people who have had complications or problems too.

Also that makes a lot of sense lmao, not sure why I thought otherwise XD. (To 3) That sounds like the best thing ever. I love swimming (I went swimming today actually) but I hate when I’m not wearing a binder and when I do swim in one it’s difficult and less safe. (To 5) I’ve heard that in some cases people have extra skin afterwards with keyhole, but that the scars are almost never visible after a few months. Also, maybe they didn’t ask you about placement because it was keyhole? Not sure, I don’t know how it works lol. (To 6) yeah that makes sense. (To 7) That’s good advice. lol I wish I had more to say in response. thx for your insight, it helped clear up a lot of stuff for me!! (If I do ever end up getting top surgery and I’m still using the forums, YOU GUYS ARE GONNA HEAR ABOUT IT lmao.)
