Sometimes I would ask my own coworkers and they'd get defensive. I was like guys come ON. JUST TELL ME. yeah I'm pretty nosy I'm sure it was quite annoying.
If you wanna add more context like what you do, what state, go ahead. I'm in WA making 16.6? I used to make 18.6 but uhhh RIP.
Oh yeah you can select more than one if you have multiple sources of income

$11.55 per hour at Goodwill. South Carolina is “business friendly,” meaning workers get taken advantage of by businesses and unions don’t exist outside a few specific ones like for teachers and police officers. The governor brags about this. Cost of living here is going up, and many people are now priced out of certain counties. Mostly along the coast.
Some businesses make workers sign documents saying they can’t talk about how much they make with other employees. Your coworkers may have had a pervious job that did that.

Workers can also be fired here if they vote to unionize. An entire store was fired for that in the Upstate last year.

I think most of them had lived in WA their whole life, i think it was more of a case of wanting to avoid drama (for example, for the last 8 months that I worked at my old job I was making $1 more than my coworker who was the same position as me but she had been in the position longer. The reason I got paid more was bc I got promoted into the position while she started on that level, so I had more raises than her. When I started as a trainee for her position I was being paid equal to her when she was fully trained, and then I got promoted AGAIN to the full position once I was trained. When we realized this it made it a little awkward, and she refused to discuss any raises after that. We were still quite friendly tho) My old boss would insist it's "illegal" to talk about. Once when I got a raise he told me not to tell anyone or he would write me up (I think only certain ppl got raises that round so he wanted to avoid drama like I said). I told him it was definitely not illegal to talk about but whatever. I still ended up talking about it and I think almost everyone got a raise, just different amount.

An entire store was fired for that in the Upstate last year. doesn’t matter if it’s normal in the state, it’s illegal on a federal level. workers just need to know that if they’re told that by the employers then they should be reporting the business to the NLRA. the only reason the employers are getting away with that is because employees don’t know it’s illegal.

I’m glad you don’t have to worry about that in WA. SC is a mixed bag with employers and businesses because it’s a “right to work” state. I was thinking if your coworkers used to live in Idaho (I think they’re also “right to work”), they may be less willing to talk about these things. But it’s probably just to avoid drama. My current job doesn’t care if we talk about our wages, but one of my last ones did. New coworkers were always told not to tell existing workers their wages. Boss told me it was part of the paperwork I signed when I was hired. SC always sides with businesses so there’s a lot of issues here. I was shocked to learn that breaks were mandatory in CA, and managers enforce them! XD

Seeing everyone make so much money per hour, meanwhile at the last official job I had, I was making $8.38 an hour. Walking away with $80 a month, and having to spend $160 every month to go to work - 3 hours a week was terrible.

Zero. I can't drive because of my seizures and I'm worried that if I get a job my epilepsy would make me do things that might mess everything up.

I know the federal min wage is 7 something (my old workplace had the fed min wage poster next to the WA min wage poster like a "you should be grateful" type energy.) But no one here has voted under 10 so I'm curious

But no one here has voted under 10 so I'm curious In some states, people who work in restaurants officially make under minimum wage. One of the few exceptions to the law. Because they’re supposed to make up for it with tips. It doesn’t always work out that way though. People don’t always tip, and some bosses insist on the tips going to the entire team.

I was working at Gamestop part-time, which was 10 miles from where I was living at the time. Cab fare would cost me $40 a ride, $20 each way, and this was with a discount since I was good friends with the driver. I ended up quitting for two reasons, the pay was abysmal, and my body couldn't handle 3 hours of constant standing due to the medical issues I have. My boss said she expected me to quit and tried to keep me on saying they were just about to give me more hours! The last two weeks I worked they had given me 6 hours each week - which my body seriously broke down from lol.

My friend’s parents are abusive and often refuse to buy him anything other than clothes and food (that’s not the abusive part). He needs a new laptop for school and the only way he can get it is if he buys it with his own money. So he’s going to turn 14 in November and his only options for work are GameStop and Handel’s Ice Cream. I’ve never worked at either place so I was wondering if you think Handel’s would be a better option? He’d be biking there so that’s why he doesn’t have many options. I’m also kinda worried about him cuz when I was 14 I had a lot of trouble managing homework even without a job, and I don’t know how he’s gonna manage homework, a part time job, AND life in general.

I've never heard of Handel's. Nor have I heard of a 14 year old being able to work at Gamestop. My Gamestop was filled with nice people, and the job isn't hard in my opinion. But Gamestop's corporation is not very good, and from my experience, you have to learn everything in the store. It's not just one position like most other smaller stores. As for the Ice Cream job, the way I'd look at it; Which pays more, Which is closer, What job can I do? Your friend sounds like he is able bodied so he might not have issues. From everything I'm aware of with people, being in a family like this and being forced to do things like this usually teaches a great sense of responsibility. Granted, if his parents are abusive that's entirely wrong. I do wish your friend luck, apologies for not being able to give better advice.

I’m not sure if he CAN even work at GameStop cuz he was the one who looked into it but thx for you response anyway, it actually was pretty helpful.

LOL yeah i do recommend it, you'll meet some great people and some awful people, but ya know, that's with any job. and i have a bachelor's degree that i finished in the typical 4 year timeline. i know entry-level positions depending on where you live are typically over $20/hr and wage work, i'm an hr manager over an office so that's why i'm on salary. hotels chains tend to be good at getting you to climb the ladder from what I've noticed. of course, that's just like personal and friends' experiences, not backed by statistics lol
