I turned 25 this year and am going to college for the first time. It's been a long time coming. I could not have started school right out of high school and I also just needed the time to figure things out too. It just wasn't the right time, the right place.
but I'm finally going! starting at a really great community college and want to work my way up to university. going for psychology with hopes to make it to my PhD. art is always at the forefront of my desires but... I am not in the privileged position to pursue such a thing ;-;
I'm hoping that with my security in having psych as a career, I will be able to focus more on art and investing in it in the future.
anyways, it's been 7 years since I've been in school and I'm feeling pretty nervous about going back. my first irl class is on Monday and man, I am just really shaking with anxiety! I'm super excited about it but just so anxious. idk just felt like I needed to express it.

congratulations and good luck! adjusting to academia again might take some energy but it seems like you know exactly what your plan is, and that focus is def a good place to be starting from!

at least in my experience with community college, you probably won't be the only middle-20's student in the class. There's usually a handful of them and tbh it's nice to have a free pass into making friends, since they all tend to cluster at the same tables. Community college was super chill, at least when I took classes. Everyone's just vibing.
honestly, my suggestion is to make sure to save all the resources you get from your classes: any slides, textbooks (or book reqs), helpful websites ect because the classes themselves might not have very high standards (ie, you don't need to remember much to pass exams) but the actual content is probably pretty good. If you want to really learn the content + prepare for a higher degree, then having those resources to study from on your own time in worth its weight in gold. I REALLY wish I'd saved some of my slides from some of my community college classes, because the class itself glossed over a lot of the material and I didn't retain as much as I'd like to know now.
but that's only from my experience and what I wished I knew before getting into it.
I wouldn't be nervous about the actual classes! Especially for the prerequisite and intro courses. It's gonna be chill.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes <3
I defintely will take the advice of saving resources, I'm a hoarder and "just in case"er anyways lol. I have been told multiple times how everyone in community college is very chill and gloomy so it makes me feel a little more at ease and in the right place lol
I'll save my heavy worrying for university

It’s really comforting to see that I’m not alone! I found myself in a similar spot after hs and now I’m nervous about being an unconventional freshman as well. I am also in my 20s and (if all goes well) planning to enroll in a 4-year university next fall. I wish you lots of luck, and might borrow any advice you get from this thread for myself if you don’t mind Cx

fyi, as someone who went to a conventional private university: everyone loved the older students. e.g., there was a guy in our freshman class who was 26 because he went into the military for awhile right after high school, and all the 18/19yros thought he was the coolest.
we also had several kids who were at least a few years older because they tranferred from a different university or similar. so although being older is perhaps unusual at conventional university, it's also not rare and you won't be looked down on for it.

Tealraven It's comforting for me too to see that you're in the same boat ^-^ What are you going for, if you don't mind me asking? This thread can be helpful for us both <3 I wish you a plethora of luck and am always down to chat if things become stressful ^-^ Saint Ambrosef This is so sick X3 I really feel like an old man going back to school even though I know it isn't super uncommon. The idea of being the cool wizard in class makes me feel at ease so thank you haha XD

As of this moment I'm going for a BA in Anthropology with a specialization in archeology and the end goal of a career in archeological fieldwork. Archeology is just one of four fields of anthropology and I find all of them fascinating, so if I don't love it, hopefully I can switch my specialization to one of the other fields. We'll see; I'm going into it with an open mind ^-^

i'm also going into uni as an older student. for health reasons it took me several years longer to graduate and i only spent the last year working, so at least i'm not too far away from actually studying. i'm excited to get back to it! my younger brother by 5 years is actually starting at the same university and faculty as i am this autumn (though we're going for different degrees at least) so that'll be interesting. i'm sure weirder for him than for me though lol
i am most almost definitely going to be among the older students, but i don't think by a huge margin or anything. it's very common here, even expected in many cases, to take between one and three years to work between high school and university. but it took me longer to finish both lower and upper secondary school, so i'll still probably be 3-4 years older than most people starting.
good luck on your studies! psychology sounds like a great choice!

Tealraven that sounds so fascinating and fulfilling ! my best friend is super into archaeology, it truly is fascinating studying humans. I go through a mind trip everytime I go to a museum and realize how old it all is and the details of the past peoples who made it; it is wild to think how long we've been alive and having a collective experience for. always so creative and curious. it's an amazing subject to get lost in <3

𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘶𝘯 that sounds so, so comforting to be going to school with your sibling ;-; I am kind of in the same boat, my mental health has been in shambles for years and years and I feel myself starting to pick myself back up a bit, well clearly since I'm going to school! Super debilitating, it's hard to watch everyone else be able to thrive while you're stuck. I wish all the best for you and for your brother <3 what are you majoring in, if you don't mind me asking! thank you for the well wishes :3

yeah, i know exactly what you mean. in my case it's my physical health that's been slowing me down (and will 100% slow me down in uni, too) but i think it's a similar feeling to watch everyone else move on. i'm glad you're getting back up, it's hard but so rewarding
thank you <3 i'm getting a bachelor's in (likely pure, though i'm officially undecided on the specifics for another year) mathematics! everyone i tell immediately turns green with envy /j i was undecided on what route i wanted to go for a long time, but it's really felt like the most obvious, natural choice since i first considered it so it feels great
