I like to reread the series every year (I know, I know, but itβs my comfort series). But there are some books that I just canβt stomach rereading. Even the ones that arenβt that great I can reread, but these just make me feel icky and angry. Curious as to what yβallβs opinions are. Here are my top ones;
3) Sun Trail, Thunder Rising, The First Battle : putting those all together since itβs the same arc. Sun Trailβs main fault is that itβs terribly boring until the very end of the book. I can read it, but the main culprit of me not being able to read it constantly is Clear Sky. I will never understand how he made it to StarClan. His cruelty and hypocrisy are beyond frustrating to me. He gets better in the last half of the arc, but of course, the Erinβs forget any progress and itβs basically wasted. All and all, I enjoy the way heβs written as I think he was a good villain (or anti hero) but I wish his character was consistent after the Great Battle.
2) Yellowfangβs Secret: I remember when this book first came out and I could not even finish it for months. The way ShadowClan as a whole behaves is awful but it makes sense to how Brokenstar was allowed to get away with all that he did for so long. There was hardly any likable characters in this book, even the protagonists were dry and mean. This point in time, ShadowClan hardly feels like a clan.
1) Squirrelflightβs Hope : I want to avoid the continuous fights that always pop up about this book, but reading it always just makes me angry. The whole relationship aspect of bramble and squirrel aside, the clans act terribly in this book, especially ThunderClan. Itβs almost the complete opposite of what ThunderClan under Firestar was like. The Clans were selfish, unwilling to compromise and the Sisters got the bad end of it. The way they were totally fine justifying Sunrise bleeding to death in camp, driving out a heavily pregnant cat and also murdering said cat (and refusing to apologize for their mistake) is insane to me. This book is unreadable to me.

You know, I like a lot of those books, but I get how someone could be frustrated reading them. Personally, that's what I like about them. I might have had to put them down a few times, but I was certainly engaged and I would probably go through them again willingly. (Yes. I like Squirrelflight's Hope. It's not perfect, but I just do.)
But if you ask me, the most frustrating parts of the series are the parts that are boring (Or that I find boring, at least.) The worst of this typically happens after the main plot has come to the end by the 3rd book (Think Darktail, The First Battle, or The Imposter's reveal) and the series just flounders for a book or two. This gets even worse when the characters aren't engaging me because then there is nearly nothing there.
But the book that frustrated me the most was Tigerheart's Shadow. Not only is the plot boring, overlong and occasionally runs in circles, but the characters are either nothing in particular or actively against their previous portrayals. The book also seems to be written to praise it's main character who's nothing all that great in the first place. There's strange new lore that doesn't really fit. (I still have no clue what the deal with Spiresight is, not to mention Tigerheart's resurrection) Truly, it has it all. It was an absolute slog to get through, and I made it worse for myself by slotting it in between books 4 and 5 of AVoS, which are also not good.
TLDR: The most frustrating thing a warriors book can be is boring and confusing, imo.

Squirrelflight's hope...Squirrelflight's hope! The super edition with Squirrelflight's perspective! Did I mention Squirrelflight's hope?
Don't get me wrong, re-reading the book made me love Squirrelflight with her ambitious, hard-headed self in which if she believes something is wrong or right...she's GONNA believe that thing is wrong or right no matter what. But I couldn't help but constantly see what she does in Bramblestar's perspective and it made me frustrated on how Squirrelflight was so OBILVIOUS to how the sisters presented themselves to the clans! Like they kidnapped her and Leafstar, and attacked ShadowClan warriors and she was really shocked when her clan was adamant on not healing them..or the fact that she couldn't understand WHY the clans couldn't wait (despite this being established in like the first few chapters of the book) boogled my mind. LIKE HOW UNAWARE CAN U BE??? But yeah, beside her failing to see the situation from the perspective of others..I actually kinda liked the book

TLDR: The most frustrating thing a warriors book can be is boring and confusing, imo. Youβre right that the ones that are frustrating are the most engaging! I have to admit that theyβre well written (for warriors.) Itβs one of the reasons that, while I hate Clear Sky, I appreciate his writing as a character. Itβs rare a warriors character gives me such passionate responses. The boring parts ARE awful to go through. I think Tigerheartβs shadow had potential when it comes to the guardian cats, but he was so focused on making them a Clan like every interaction the clan cats have outside of their own kind. Other than that, they never really explain Spiresight and he kind of becomes irrelevant quickly, and zombie Tigerheartstar is still weird. It would have been better if he was βkilledβ by StarClan the way Windstar was.

But honestly, I am tired of the whole territory issue. The clans could have waited for Moonlight to give birth and move on. No one was starving, it was greenleaf and prey was abundant. It was just drama for dramaβs sake. RiverClan could have fished in the marshes and ShadowClan could have hunted their frogs or what ever there and share that territory the way WindClan and ThunderClan did. (Also, it specifically mentioned that ThunderClan took moorland, but I thought they only took the forest part on the opposite side of the stream?)

Not with Tigerstar instigating every millisecond and the clans arguing about wasted land, sooner or later it would've erupted into war especially with RiverClan ALREADY attacking ShadowClan not even two weeks in. Maybe in an alternative universe where Tigerstar isn't so annoying and RiverClan wasn't as mad as they were about the river...they could've waited but unfortunately, we weren't blessed with that timeline.

The thing about The Sisters is that they pretty much protected their territory exactly like how a clan would. (ShadowClan has also held cats against their will, and every clan fights when their territory is violated) So I can't really blame them for that much actually. I also don't think it's on them to move because ShadowClan and RiverClan will fight if they don't.

I forgot that RiverClan attacked them, like wtf man. All of them literally agreed it was for the best and then they canβt stand even act peacefully. Ngl, the funniest (and most frustrating) part is that they ended up having to wait the original moon anyway for the sisters to leave, since the kits were dependent on Violetshine for food. At least, thatβs what it reads like. Iirc, SkyClan stays in their original camp for quite some time.

Strikestone losing part of his hearing was tragic, but they also trespassed into the Sisterβs land to begin with. Kind of just an everyone sucks situation.

Most of the books in TNP, any book where they go visit the mountains instead of progressing the plot, and... Yeah, Squirrelflight's Hope. I enjoyed the plot and thought the Sisters were really cool, but spending hours of my time reading about Squilf getting metaphorically beat down repeatedly when all she wants to do is help people is maddening. Squilf's opinions are clearly the most logical ones in this situation- the Sisters will be leaving soon anyway, the Clans can wait to reshuffle their territory and the Sisters can't travel right away, etc...

Dawn of the Clans for me. I just hate how characters like Bumble were treated and the way she-cats in general were treated as damsel's in distress. I also didn't like any of the protagonists. I really struggled with this arc why a lot of people like it is beyond me, not that I fault anyone for liking it. The only characters I liked were Riverstar and Shadowstar.

Anything regarding a journey is a slog for me to read through, barring the Great Journey. Some of the DOTC books bored me as well. Anything from ASC due to Squirrelflight hogging a part of the plot again. Just want her gone already :/

Basically any SkyClan centered book
AVOS 4-6: Just really boring. I was actually doing a reread a couple of weeks ago and I just couldn't get past Darkest Night. Firestar's Quest: I find Firestar pretty bland and I'm not the biggest FireSand enjoyer either. It's also partially a traveling book. SkyClan's Destiny: I just find it really hard to read about Leafstar in general. I can't connect with her character and the way she does things. And Stick... I don't even remember what the guy did, sorry. Hawkwing's Journey: I sort of understand his feelings and why he actes the way he did, but same as Leafstar, I just can't read a book with a character who I can't connect with and annoys me. The only upside of it was that reading about his and Darktail's relationship was really interesting. Maybe I'd add most of TBC as well, but I can give it a pass because the plot was alright
Yeah for me it just really depends on how much I like the mc (which really just means how relatable or interesting I find them)

Firestar's Quest was my first ever WC hate-reread. I love Firestar but it was a boring travelling book for half of it and it is simply one of the biggest character assassinations I've ever read. FQ spottedleaf writing makes my head hurt

Including one from each arc and other additional material: Fire and Ice (TPB), Twilight (TNP), Outcast (PoT), Sign of the Moon (OotS), A Forest Divided (DotC), the entire latter half of AVoS, Squirrelflight's Hope (SE), Spottedleaf's Heart (Novella), Tigerstar and Sasha (GN, love the story but the art style made it seem less serious/believable at times)

SqH and ASC:
-Squirrelflight's Hope is just further evidence to me that Bramble sucked as leader long before ASC, and the clans are horrible and could have waited (Tigerstar being impatient is not a valid reason they couldn't - it just speaks even more to how awful the clans were here!), and they shoved leafpool's death into a garbage side book as the cherry on top.
-i was cautiously excited for ASC and got...Shiteheart x Sunbeam as the obnoxious power couple of the arc + Frostpaw's whole crush plotline is like the LEAST interesting, lamest way they could have had Splashtail be mistakenly trusted. Ugh.
