What are some background characters that you think have a lot more to them than meets the eye? I know there are a lot of people (myself included) who count some characters who barely appear in the canon as some of their favourites, so I'm wondering what makes them special in your mind? I'll start with the one that I pretty much made this thread just to talk about: Gorsetail!
I guess I like her so much because she manages to feel like a full character where many of her Clanmates don't really. If you're wondering, she's the WindClan queen who loses her kits in the tunnels during Dark River. According to an author statement, she's been in a half-clan relationship, which makes things very interesting along with the fact that she's had her gender changes multiple times in the allegiances. She's also one of the few WindClan warriors under Onestar that is somewhat reasonable towards other clans (as a result of Dark River, probabaly) and I like almost of her moments.
She's at her most important in Crowfeather's Trial, where she is very against Breezepelt. (Probably because two of her kits died in the DF battle) I like that, it gives her a reason to be mad. She's also fairer than the others on her judgement of him, idk. But all of this is to say that I think she's a character with a lot of potential to expand on for someone who has maybe a few dozen lines.
Are there any characters that you think also have an unusual amount of potential?

I really like Honeyleaf and Willowshine. Honeyleaf worked so hard as a deputy and believed in SkyClan, and then it was for nothing when they disbanded. I find Willowshine’s whole story interesting, how she was RiverClan’s only connection to StarClan as an apprentice.

There are some current background characters I'm strangely interested in, doesn't mean they shouldn't be killed, they absolutely should if nothing will be done with them. Anyway, here they are:
- Eaglewing
Basically all she's known for is her uselessness, but the reasons I like her is mostly headcanons, her lack of appearance kind of make it easy to imagine what she could be like. There's nothing I concretely like about her, she's only had two moments of characterization (patrol in Squirrelflight's Hope and talk with Nightheart in Shadow), I think it's the potential I see in her that makes me want to like her. Still, she's not needed and should be killed if The Erins aren't doing anything with her
- Plumstone
Pretty much same, except she has more personality, if I had to pick one to live she's be the one who survives. I like the moment she had with Thriftear, and I like her design. She's also one of the few modern background characters who has friends, as we found out in Thunder that she's friends with Dewnose, though they both seemed pretty forgotten in Wind, probably because different authors. It would be good if the story team gave them a sheet of who's friends with who, right now it feels like they just have to make it up on the spot
- Hollytuft & Honeyfur
I'm putting them in the same bc I headcannon them as best friends. Hollytuft had such good potential to be interesting and it's so sad nothing's been done with her. The first part of Nightheart's story was about being compared to some dead guy, it would've been nice to maybe have Hollytuft included as she's named after a dead person, and looks like that dead person, and is the daughter to the dead person's sibling. We also know she has been compared to Hollyleaf before, btw can't the story team just canon her eyes as green already? I'm tired of going to the warriors wiki and seeing she doesn't have a confirmed eye color! Anyway, she could've been great to include in River as an example of legacy-stuff, maybe we could've learned what she thinks of her name?
Honeyfur just seems interesting too me. She barely appears, but she seems so interesting in the few scenes we've seen of her. She seems very outspoken, and we need more characters who has opinions on things
- Leafshade
Basically same as her sister, Honeyfur. She has an interesting personality. Problem is that she's not included att all, she's been absent from this series since April 2021 which - believe it or not - was over 3 years ago. She needs to be killed off, honestly.
- Gullswoop
She has such a unique personality, and I always like it when she appears in the books! It's just a shame she hasn't been included much in the last few books, but I hope she gets to be included more in the future, cause she has a lot of potential!

I would like this post but I would prefer almost none of these gals to be killed off. I also don’t consider Eaglewing to be useless and adore her more code-conscious self while also showing concern for other Clans. Plumstone and Thriftear read as mean girl besties to me and I hope Plumstone gets to be a weird aunt figure to Moonpaw. Hollytuft is a mean and almost cruel cat and she definitely would have rubbed Nightheart the wrong way if they ever interacted. Considering how quick she was to turn on her younger siblings to the point her mother was scolding her. (I also typically consider Hollytuft as the oldest of their litter so the fact she behaves with little maturity in some of her scenes is delightful!) Gullswoop is adorable and caring! But the world has to revolve around ThunderClan… The only ones I don’t have much enthusiasm for are Larksong’s sisters, they are both horribly underutilized related to Nightheart’s issues. And Leafshade is saved by having the better name while her sister gets the boring fur suffix.

Pip the Terrier, but I can’t tell if it’s ironic or unironic.

I’ve always really appreciated Petalfur. She had a kind and creative personality in The Fourth Apprentice, and I loved the way she fought against the beavers in memory of Rippletail. It was nice to see her stay friendly and warm towards Dovepaw after their journey ended.
She lost all three of her littermates, raised a family with Mallownose, and died at the claws of Darktail and his Kin when they invaded RiverClan. Her death was so tragic, especially when Mistystar was forced to abandon her body after Darktail refused to let RiverClan stay and bury their Clanmates. I hope she can make an appearance in Star, maybe alongside her son Jayclaw.

GOLDENFLOWER
This thread was right in cuz because last night I was up until like 3:00 reading Goldenflower fan fiction on ao3 hehe
Goldenflower was Tigerstar’s mate, which that alone makes her interesting. There’s so many things to be explored about her. Her first son, Swiftpaw, died from something her mate started to harm her clan. How would she feel about that? Tigerstar left her for ShadowClan and tried to manipulate their kits. He didn’t true my care about her. What made Goldenflower like her in the first place? There’s so much to be explored there. Her life was honestly so tragic during the main series and it’s really never brought attention to (she looses her brother, looses her deaf young brother to a hawk, has both of her kits from her first litter die young, was ditched by her mate, had to learn Tigerstar took another mate after her, watched her kits get mistreated and see Firestar’s anxiousness come out around Bramblekit, and also watched her daughter leave her clan to live with her evil father) and none of it is ever really brought to attention. She honestly had (and still does) have so much potential that should have/should been explored.

I’m the type of person who will remember tiny details about fiction (but not stuff I have to do in real life as much 🥲). I could probably say something about any background cat but I’ll copy a previous post about my favorite, Sagenose, along with Lizardtail.
He was kept captive and mistreated by a Twoleg with his mother and sister before being rescued and joining SkyClan. His father, Rainfur, died when he was very young, and his mother and mentor, Petalnose, disappeared (we don’t know what happened to her) when he was either an apprentice or young warrior. His daughter Snipkit drowned, and his sister Mintfur stayed behind in the gorge when SkyClan left, meaning that it was a long time before he saw her again. His daughter Curlypaw left the Clan to become a kitty pet in a place far from the lake territory and he will likely never see her again. His mate, Birdwing, and son Fidgetpaw were kidnapped, leaving Sagenose devastated and with no one, and suffered moons of hardship and travel along with his Clan. Eventually Mintfur and her family returned to the Clan, possibly leaving him bitter that his sister still had her mate and kits with her. Fidgetpaw returned too, but became a full medicine cat soon. Sagenose missed much of his son’s childhood, and lost his other two kits. He also winds up mentoring one of Mintfur’s kits Gravelnose. Mintfur’s kit Fringewhisker also left the Clan to join ShadowClan, and Sagenose could possibly relate with his sister to having their kit leave. In AVOS and TBC he is shown to be rather bitter and argumentative, while having been cheery as an apprentice. I believe this stems from his loss of nearly all of his family and all the hardships he faced throughout his life. It is very unlikely he will find another mate, and he will probably never see Birdwing again, perhaps not even in StarClan (though I hope she gets there). I really want a novella on Birdwing, Clovertail and Waspwhisker, showing that they are okay and make it to StarClan or even them returning to their Clan (very unlikely). I wish we had more material on Sagenose, on how tragedy deeply affected him and how he dealt with it. He’s still alive, so I have my fingers crossed for Changing Skies with the Leafstar and possibly changing POV, no matter how unlikely it is!
Also more recently, Lizardtail. His parents are unknown, his first apprentice Foxnose died in AVOS, and his mate Lakeheart vanished from the allegiances, most likely dead. In TBC he lost his son Dappletuft who fought against the imposter, only to have Mistystar refuse to give him a proper vigil. Then his daughter Softpelt dies fighting for Mistystar with the imposter, and is trapped for a time in the Dark Forest. Mistystar then exiles his son Harelight for fighting against the imposter, leaving him with only one kit in the Clan. Mistystar then travels to the Dark Forest and helps free Dappletuft and Softpelt, and allows Harelight back into the Clan, but I don’t think it’s unrealistic to imagine that Lizardtail held a grudge against her after how she hurt his family, or even blame her for his kits’ deaths. Then in ASC, Mistystar and his former mentor Reedwhisker dies, probably leaving him with a lot of mixed feelings. His son Harelight becomes deputy but is then killed by Splashtail. This leaves him now with one kit left, Gorseclaw, who is shown to be a strong Splashtail supporter (he’s also interesting too). I hope he and Gorseclaw have a prominent role in Star, given that the authors remembered to show them in shock after Harelight’s death. Also I think it’s funny that his two apprentices were Foxnose and Fognose, only one letter difference.
