To me at least. Other than being "kin of Firestar's kin", their relationship to Firestar was never really mentioned at all. It was just like, Jayfeather: "oh no all is lost the prophecy won't come true... oh wait I forgot Cloudtail is Firestar's nephew and Dove and Ivy are his grandchildren yippy we're saved!" And them being related to Firestar was never mentioned again. They were just the "possible prophecy cats". And I honestly understand that. Cause yes, though they are related to Firestar... it's not that much. Heck, I have no clue who my grandpa's uncle was ._.' let alone who his kids and grandkids were- or are, I don't even know if they are alive or where they live. My family just doesn't keep in touch with anyone if they aren't immidiate family. So even though Dove and Ivy probably knew they were related to Firestar- it didn't mean much, especially since it's commonplace in clan life to not even know who your 1st cousins are- and even more common for cousins to marry each other because of it. And that also explains why Lion, Jay, and Dove never really had a "family" relationship. Sure, they got close and depended on one another a lot, but they never really did with the motive "we are family". It was always "cause we're apart of the prophecy", and having powers. But yeah, this is also a reason why I don't care much if Ivypool becomes leader. Dewnose, Amber(forgot), and Snow(uhhh forgot XD) are more related to Firestar than she is so I couldn't care less. It just doesn't make sense to decline a warrior leadership just because their grandpa's uncle's was leader. But yeah, just sharing my thoughts

snowbush and ambermoon if you wanted to know.
but family game night for firestar and his fam would have been a neat sub-plot. "there will be three, one of your three, will have the mossball in their paws........."
mmm good points i just hate ivypool and it would just be such a pain to just and since i feel like it will end up with this as their reasoning for her being leader: oh the great ivystar :') she selflessly, willingly, and totes intentionally saved the clans and infiltrated the dark forest single-pawed!!1! and look at all this information she got us!! at the price of her life...... ivypool fought for the clans and she will fight for you!
there's probably more to her than being an inadequate spy and i missed it or it hasn't been revealed yet.

Right! Ambermoon and Snowbush, thanks for reminding me.
And yeah, I'm not saying people shouldn't not want her to be leader- I just think her being related to Firestar shouldn't be a really good reason, since she's not that related to him at all.
Cause by now, half the clan are related to Firestar- so eventually by the end of the series it'll soon become pretty hard to choose a candidate that isn't related to Firestar. Brackenfur, Thornclaw, and Brightheart are too old, Birchfall, Berrynose, and Mousewhisker aren't mature enough or don't show any qualities, Poppyfrost just seems like a regular warrior- Cinderheart seems like a better possibility than her sister, but she has shown to not really want to be special and was releved to have Cinderpelt leave her- so I doubt she'll be striving to be leader anytime soon, Cherryfall and Molewhisker are... better, but they still have a long way to go, and Stormcloud is just a new warrior and still needs to get well-known in the clan. Plus he's obviously only there for more genetic diversity, and probably nothing more.
The only ones that really stand out- but not really- are Rosepetal, Blossomfall, and Bumblestripe. Rosepetal has gotten several apprentices recently, Blossomfall has really humbled herself since her clanmates distrusted her, and Bumblestripe has been seen as a pretty loyal warrior and several authors have mentioned that also. They all however have had their dark moments, like Rosepetal being involved in the fox attack, Blossomfall being in the dark forest and struggling to be self-confident, and Bumblestipe struggling to trust his sister and seem pretty unsympathetic or even cruel to some people at one point.
So like... looking at ThunderClan's options non-Firestar wise, there aren't many, and so it would make sense for several Firestar family members to be candidates as well, since not all, but some do show some leadership characteristics.

Someone's viability in being leader should never be discounted entirely because of family. Just take a look at me!

I would've liked to see that. :/
The reason the family tie wasn't brought up after Sunrise was most likely due to cats not caring about familial bonds outside of immediate family. Remember, they live in a culture where incest is not only acceptable, but inevitable and normal. Yet, Jayfeather mentioning Dovewing and Ivypool's connection to Firestar shows that they are aware of these relations. I guess they don't really care that much about them. Heck, I can't think of any characters who are close with their first cousins, let alone second cousins once removed.
