I’ve been recently reading ASC and Lionblaze’s character seems so different from past books. So much angrier than I thought he was. I know he’s older now and a lot of bad things have happened to thunder clan, but I always took him as such a good, understanding, sweet cat. I was wondering if anyone else had thoughts on this or perspectives I haven’t thought of?

I always saw Lionblaze as a cat who is easy to anger and is prone to uncontrollable violence when he's blinded by rage/battle. Even as an apprentice in PoT, he lost control of himself while fighting the invaders with the Tribe and nearly killed Crowfeather because he was mad at Heatherpaw, when Crowfeather had nothing to do with their drama. He attacked Hollypaw and shed his sister's blood during training because he was mad that she disapproved of his friendship with Heatherpaw. He killed both Russetfur and Harestar by accident (Russetfur was old and shouldn't have been fighting, but Harestar's still a fit warrior, and Lionblaze seemed shocked that he killed him). He lost his temper with Ashfur in TBC, to the point that he was ready to kill Ashfur without permission, which is far more understandable than other incidents, but he was still out of line, especially as a temporary deputy at the time. There may be even more instances of his temper that I've forgotten about. I've never seen Lionblaze as a particularly calm or sweet cat, and his tendency toward violence when he's angry is pretty prevalent throughout the series.

I think that being a protagonist made him seem nicer than he actually was, because he had to look somewhat presentable. Even so, he did have his moments in PoT and OotS as others have already pointed out. But now that we don't really have any reason to sympathize with him his more violent actions seem worse somehow. I don't really remember anything he did in AVoS, but in TBC he did seem to be nastier than usual and that is probably why.

I like him being temperamental and overprotective. It fits well with his PoT and TBC characterization and it's not like he's villainous or anything. He just sees many problems as nails and himself as a hammer, and takes issues with his family very seriously.

He’s not sweet and that’s why I enjoy his character. A berserker who is kinda scared of himself >>>> another generic protagonist
