♕ [ P l o t . ]
On Halloween night, Kieran, a young man from the modern world in Ireland, finds himself thrust into a realm of ancient magic and peril. At a festive Halloween party with his younger sister Lily, they encounter a mysterious group of revelers who promise them adventure beyond their wildest dreams. Eager for excitement, Kieran and Lily follow the strangers through winding paths and darkened woods until they reach what appears to be an ordinary park.
Unbeknownst to them, the park harbors a hidden secret—a fairy mound disguised as an innocuous hill. Enticed by the strangers, Kieran and Lily step into the mound, unknowingly crossing the threshold into Faeland, a mystical realm where spirits and faeries roam freely under the cover of Halloween night, when the veil between worlds is thinnest.
Inside the mound, Kieran and Lily are drawn into a mesmerizing fae dance, where time loses its meaning and reality blurs into a kaleidoscope of lights and music. In the midst of the dance, Kieran becomes separated from Lily, lost in the swirling chaos of the fae's enchantment.

Kieran Gallagher - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Kieran stumbled through the darkness, disoriented and terrified. Just moments ago, he had been at a Halloween party with his younger sister, Lily. The air had been thick with excitement and the promise of a good time. But then they were approached by a group of strangely dressed individuals, their costumes intricate and otherworldly. They had invited Kieran and Lily to follow them to a special place, promising adventure and mystery. Against his better judgment, Kieran had agreed, eager to indulge in the Halloween spirit.
They had led them through winding alleys and darkened streets until they arrived at a quiet corner of the town park. There, under the shadow of an ancient oak tree, lay what appeared to be a quaint fairy mound, the kind Kieran had read about in folklore but never believed to be real. The strangers had convinced them to step inside, assuring them it was all part of the night's festivities. Once inside the mound, Kieran's perception of reality twisted. Lights danced around him, music pulsed through the air, and the strangers transformed into ethereal beings, their forms shimmering with an otherworldly glow. They beckoned Kieran and Lily to join them in a dance, a celebration unlike any he had ever experienced. The music was hypnotic, and Kieran found himself unable to resist its enchanting pull.
As the night wore on, Kieran lost track of time and his surroundings. He danced with a feverish intensity, his mind caught in a whirlwind of ecstasy and confusion. And then, in a blink, everything changed. The fae, capricious creatures of ancient power, lost interest in him as abruptly as they had taken it. One moment he was in the midst of a dance, the next he found himself lying in a dew-kissed meadow under a silver moon. Kieran sat up slowly, his head pounding with a dull ache. The meadow stretched endlessly around him, bathed in the soft light of the Faeland night. He reached up to touch his face, finding it damp with tears of exhaustion and fear. Where was Lily? Panic gripped his heart as he called out her name, his voice echoing in the stillness.
But there was no answer, only the rustling of leaves and the distant murmur of a hidden stream. Kieran struggled to his feet, his muscles protesting the sudden movement. He stumbled forward, his senses reeling from the strange transition from the mortal realm to this mysterious land. As Kieran walked, he noticed subtle differences in the world around him. Flowers glowed with a soft luminescence, casting gentle shadows on the grass. Trees whispered secrets in a language he couldn't comprehend, and distant laughter echoed through the night. Faeland was both breathtakingly beautiful and unnervingly unfamiliar.
Driven by a fierce determination to find Lily, Kieran pressed on, guided by an instinct he couldn't explain. Hours passed like minutes as he traversed forests and crossed babbling brooks, each step bringing him closer to an uncertain fate. The thought of Lily, alone and frightened in this strange realm, fueled his resolve.

(( Tadgh is pronounced TIE-guh, like the start of tiger ))
Tadgh trudged through the Autumn wood, undisturbed by the undergrowth catching on the fur of his lower legs. Samhain was two nights past, and he had journeyed to the Unseelie courts to partake in the festivities. A particular favourite celebration of his, the night had been a glorious drunken revel that although he had been initially edgy about he eventually lost himself in the fun of it. Upon the following morning though, whispers had travelled through the celebrators that a group of younger Fae had crossed to the Mortal Realm and tricked some humans into entering the Woods to dance, as had been tradition many many years past.
He had very quickly made himself scarce after that. As a solitary being, without the promise of bathing in the heightened magic of the Samhain night so many gathered Fae in the daylight made him nervous, not eager to become the next victim of
Breath misting the the night air as he sighed he contemplated the fate of the poor, poor souls that had been lured in. Long past was the time when humans would be tricked into dancing to their death for the amusement of the Fae- or so he had thought. Though, he supposed, if there was anytime it would happen, it would be Samhain, and it would be a party of Unseelie Fae that would take the most pleasure in the trouble of humans. With a little shudder he remembered a group of Redcaps, their caps now an old rusty red from the blood of the dead, crouched in a loose circle around a fire munching on some distinctly un-animal limbs. Some of the darker aspects of the night were not lost on him, but the consumption of flesh still made him a bit squeamish even after all these years.
He stilled as a cry pierced the night, his antlered head shooting up, His long, draping rabbit like ears pricking as best they could. Turning he lifted his flat, deer- like nose to scent the air in the direction the cry had come from. Human. It had been a long, long time since he had smelt anything like it.
"This can't be good." He muttered to himself. Undecided, he hesitated, clutching the strap of his bedroll to his cloak. He took a few hesitant steps on his original path before the Redcaps sprang to mind again. With a groan, he trotted in the direction of where the sound had come from, and quickly picked up the sounds of someone crashing through the forest. Oh that is definitely a mortal. No Fae would ever make that much noise running anywhere.
He found the mortal male stumbling on a deer path. Slowing, he scanned the surrounding darkness for any potential danger that he may get caught up in by involving himself with this human. An awful chill took him when he saw that floating listlessly behind him was a host of Slua Sidhe. Being that Samhain had just passed, he would have thought their hunger would have been sated for longer. Heart racing, he leapt into the path of the man, just ahead on the path so he would not slam into him. If he faced the Slua Sidhe, and engaged the human he hoped they would stay away from a bigger fae.
"Human! What do you here? Have no no protection?" He demanded, trying his best not to seem panicked.

Kieran Gallagher - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Kieran trudged through the dense undergrowth of Faeland, every step a struggle against the brambles and roots that seemed determined to trip him on the deer trail. His heart pounded with anxiety and exhaustion, but he refused to give up. Lily needed him. He pushed forward, his tousled brown hair matted with sweat, his green eyes darting around, alert for any signs of danger—or his sister.
The night was eerily quiet, save for the occasional rustle of leaves or distant animal call. Suddenly, a voice pierced the air, sending a shiver down Kieran's spine. He froze. It wasn't Lily's voice, but it was maybe another human but he was wrong, he turned his head towards the voice. In front of him stood a creature unlike any he had ever seen—a human-like figure with the grace of a deer, long rabbit ears twitching atop its head, and a delicate deer-like nose.
Kieran's heart pounded in his chest as he instinctively gripped a stick he had found earlier, raising it defensively taking a step back, his mind racing. ❝I'm looking for my sister, Lily,❞ he said, his Irish accent thick with desperation as he waved the stick towards the creature with shaky arms. ❝She was taken by something! I-I have to find her!❞ Kieran's heart pounded even harder. ❝I can't leave without her,❞ he insisted. ❝Please, you have to help me.❞ Kieran knew he really should just run but maybe also it was stupid to trust this creature, thinking it was friendly somehow. It did seem to speak english after all. Notes. Oh no. your response was great ! | Words. 259 | Tag. houndsteeth

"For goodness sake, stop waving that about." Tadgh knocked the stick clean out of the human's hands. "These woods are dangerous. See you not the Slua Sidhe?" He nodded his antlered head towards the flock of pale grey, indistinctly bird like spirits roosting in the trees. Without eyes, it should have been hard to tell if they were watching them, but Tadgh knew better. He could feel the malevolent hunger rolling off the host of the hungry undead.
"If you've lost the person you came here with there is no tell of where she may be." Tadgh came off colder than what he had intended, and quickly tried to amend it by adding "I heard that some younger Fae tricked some humans into coming here. It's been a long time since anyone has done something like that- you must be very confused, and I feel for you. But this is a very dangerous place. It would be better and safer for you to leave. Can you remember where you crossed over? I will escort you back there." It was a long shot asking where the human entered the Fae Realm, but Tadgh thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Kieran's eyes widened as the stick was knocked from his hands, a sense of helplessness washing over him. He followed the antler creature's nod towards the eerie, bird-like spirits and shuddered at the palpable malevolence.
Kieran's eyes narrowed with determination as he stepped around the antler creature, shaking his head. ❝I can't leave. I have to find my sister.❞ he said, his voice steady despite the fear lurking beneath. Without another word, Kieran turned and started to venture away from the antler creature, running past him, his heart pounding in his chest. He couldn't afford to waste any more time. His sister needed him.

The Slua Sidhe rose at once when Kieran took off, pursuing now with fervour. Tadgh cursed, sensing their blood-lust and sprinted after the human, catching up effortlessly and while running, hoisted Kieran up by the collar and slung him over his shoulder. Now he truly took off like a frightened deer, scanning the woods as he darted through for somewhere they could go. Spying at the last second a very large hole under and ash tree he dived for it, unslinging Kieran and pushing him in before pressing himself over the hole.
Thankfully the undead passed by,howling and keening. Tadgh heaved himself up then pulled Kieran out. "Alright alright." He panted. "Ai can see that you're serious about finding your sister. I guess.... I'll help. Maybe." Scrunching his nose with distaste, he eyed the human. "You can't stumble around like this. You're stupid and blind as a newborn fox cub, and if you carry on the way you are you'll be dead within the hour." Here he jabbed a long grey finger into Kieran's chest. "We both got lucky this time. The Slua Sidhe would have eaten us both."
Sighing with exasperation, he leaned back against a tree and sized up the human. "What do they call you? I suppose you have no memories of Samhain night do you? And, just so you know that was two nights past, so where ever your friend is she is most likely very far from here by now."

In the dim, musty confines under the ancient ash tree, Kieran sat huddled against the cool earth, his heart still racing from their narrow escape. He could hear antler creature's heavy breathing as he kept watch near the entrance, alert for any sign of the Slua Sidhe that had nearly caught them. The darkness pressed in around them, broken only by faint streaks of moonlight filtering through the gnarled roots above. Kieran ran a hand through his disheveled hair, trying to steady his nerves. His mind raced with thoughts of his missing sister, Lily, and the perilous journey they now faced.
Thankfully, the undead passed by, their haunting wails fading into the night as Kieran was pulled out of the hole. Kieran nodded solemnly, absorbing the antlered creature's words. Despite the urgency of their mission, he couldn't shake the gnawing worry for Lily's safety. ❝Me name's Kieran,❞ he replied finally, his voice tinged with determination. ❝And nah, I can't remember a thing from that night. All I know is I've gotta find her.❞ He shifted uncomfortably, feeling exposed in the open woods after the safety of their hiding place. His gaze drifts back to the antlered creature. ❝Um.. what's your name?❞

(( No such thing as a bad reply! I can work with what you've given me I have a very short reply, so now it's my turn to apologise haha )) "You can call me Tadgh. Most do." Massaging his temples, he sank into a crouch then propped his chin on his fist. "I understand that you feel this is very pressing but we are not going to get anywhere fast with no information. At the very least, you are thankfully still in the Autumn Woods, and I have a friend that may.... help." He looked Kieran squarely in the eyes here. "What in the way of protection against the Fae do you have on you, if any? Iron? Salt? You clearly have no idea of how dangerous this place is for you. Most mortals don't, but you seem worse that what I have seen." Then he frowned. "Surely the tales of the Folk live on in your world? We've been withdrawing from the Mortal Realm more and more but surely humans have not become blind and deaf to our ways?"

Kieran met Tadgh's intense gaze with a mixture of confusion and concern etched on his face. After a moment's hesitation, he spoke cautiously. ❝Iron and salt? No, I... I didn't bring anything like that. I didn't think... I mean, I didn't know.❞ His voice faltered, betraying a hint of fear that he hadn't fully grasped until now. ❝I've heard stories, you know, about the Fae and their tricks, but I didn't think they were real. I thought they were just... tales.❞
He shifted uncomfortably, glancing around at the darkening woods that suddenly seemed more ominous than enchanting. ❝I guess I should have paid more attention. I'm sorry if I've put myself or anyone else in danger.❞ His eyes flickered back to Tadgh's face, searching for some reassurance or guidance amidst the uncertainty. ❝What do I need to do? How can I protect myself here?❞

(( Yep, they probably will ))
Tadgh frowned. Could it have been so long since he was last in the Mortal Realm that the mortals were beginning to forget the Folk and their ways? Surprisingly, a pang of sadness gripped his heart. "You need to carry iron, or salt. Preferably both. Probably more, but I know not of much to do with human protections." Tadgh stood, making a decision. "I will take you to Una. She is a fair way from here, but she too is mortal, and will at least tell you how to protect yourself for she has been here a very long time. At least for now you are with me and I will try my best but I alone am no guarantee for your safety." He reached under his cloak and with a bit of fumbling, took off a simple dagger and holding the sheathed blade, pressed the pommel into Kieran's chest. "Don't. Stab me with it." He warned and opened his palm, inviting Kieran to take the weapon.
Tadgh scanned the human again, this time assessing his clothing. "Are you cold at all?" He asked grudgingly. The Autumn Woods had a chill to the night air, and he was reluctant to give up his cloak. But he would, knowing that humans despite their penchant for wearing many cloths over their naked bodies, got cold easily.

Kieran blinked, taken aback by Tadgh's abrupt shift in demeanor from wary to somewhat begrudgingly helpful. He eyed the offered dagger cautiously, noting the warning about not stabbing Tadgh with it. Slowly, he reached out and took the weapon, feeling the weight of it in his hand. ❝Thank you,❞ Kieran replied, his voice a mixture of uncertainty and gratitude. He held onto the dagger tightly, relieved to have something that might offer protection in this strange, otherworldly place. As Tadgh scanned him and asked about his comfort in the chill of the Autumn Woods, Kieran hesitated for a moment before answering. ❝I... I'm okay for now,❞ he replied, unsure whether Tadgh's offer was genuine or if he was just fulfilling some obligation. He pulled his jacket closer around him, feeling the cold seeping through the fabric. ❝Um, if you're sure Una can help, then... then I guess we should go see her,❞ Kieran added tentatively, hoping that Una would have more answers about how to stay safe in this unfamiliar realm.

(( I'll try and provide a bit of entertainment here. I was thinking it would probably take at least a week for them to get to Una's? ))
"Let us go." Tadgh strode off, once again silent as he passed through the undergrowth. As he walked, he tried to calculate approximately how long may take them to get to Una's. A week? Maybe more perhaps. He mused glancing at the night sky to to gain a better sense of direction. The thick canopy of Autumn leaves obscured his vision though and he snorted in irritation. The sound was very animal.
Somewhere around here there would be a clearing, surely. That would allowing for a better view and he could gain his bearings again. A bit of irritation prickled under his skin at having volunteered to help this human, for it had divereted him from his migration. Why have I done this to myself? It's not like I like them much in the first place. And this is not going to be a quick fix either. After about an hour of almost aimless walking, he finally came upon what he wanted- an open glade touched by silver moonlight, the moon reflected on a beautiful middling sized pond near to where he emerged from the treeline. Gazing up once again, he began orienting himself and calculating the journey again.
A few splashes and giggles from the pond caused him to twitch one floppy ear, but he ignored it for the most part. Unbeknownst to him, the nymphs of the water peeked over the edge, gazing curiously at their visitors. A flurry of activity and giggling was caused when they spied Kieran, and they almost seemed to fall over themselves beckoning him to the waters edge.

Kieran followed closely behind Tadgh, stepping lightly over fallen branches and navigating through the dense underbrush. His keen eyes scanned their surroundings, occasionally darting upward to catch glimpses of the stars through the gaps in the foliage. He noticed Tadgh's frustration with the obstructed view of the sky and chuckled softly. Kieran paused, his eyes narrowing slightly as he caught the movement and laughter from the pond. He had heard tales of such creatures - playful spirits of the water, known to lure unsuspecting travelers into their domain with enchanting melodies and beguiling laughter.
Despite their beckoning gestures, Kieran remained cautious. He knew better than to trust the allure of supernatural beings, no matter how innocent they appeared. He continued to scan the surroundings, his senses on high alert, while his hand instinctively reached for the hilt of his dagger. He found himself slightly backing up into Tadgh unknowingly.

Tadgh started when Kieran bumped into him and turned around to find out why. Taking in the nymphs beckoning to Kieran, and the trepidation in the human's countenance, he barked out a warning in an old tongue to the nymphs. They abruptly quietened, disappearing with a couple of quiet splashes.
Dropping a hairy grey hand on Kieran's shoulder. "Well done. It seems you learn quickly." He guided Kieran in the direction he had worked out and dropped his hand. "This way. It will be a while before we get to Una's, maybe a week as we're on foot. I think you would not walk as fast as I normally do." He said bluntly. "I didn't pay as much attention as I should have back there. It's going to take some getting used to having a companion, let alone one that needs so much attention. Not even fawns need so much watching." He rambled. What he said was true, for the Fae could not lie. Never had he had a companion to talk to in his life. While he met with others briefly, he had always been alone since he was first called into existence. It worried at him for he knew his manner could change abruptly sometimes as he would try to get to the point quickly. It could be a bit... grating he supposed for even the other Folk were baffled or perturbed by him.

Kieran nodded slowly, trying to process everything that had just happened. His encounter with the nymphs had been unsettling, to say the least, and Tadgh's intervention had been both unexpected and reassuring. He glanced at Tadgh, noticing the seriousness etched into the lines of his face, and the way he carried himself with a sense of purpose. ❝Thank you,❞ Kieran said, his voice slightly hoarse from the tension of the moment. ❝I... I appreciate your help back there. I'm still trying to understand everything.❞
He shifted his gaze to the path ahead, absorbing Tadgh's words about the journey to Una's. A week on foot seemed daunting, especially with someone as enigmatic as Tadgh as his guide. Kieran realized he had a lot to learn, not just about the world beyond his village, but about Tadgh himself. ❝I'll do my best to keep up,❞ he replied earnestly. ❝And... I'll try not to be too much of a burden. It's all so new to me.❞
He hesitated for a moment, unsure if Tadgh would appreciate further conversation or prefer silence. But Kieran couldn't shake off the need to connect, to understand the being who had stepped into his life so suddenly. ❝I've never met anyone like you,❞ he admitted quietly. ❝Are you... Are you really Fae?❞ His curiosity mixed with a hint of awe, as if speaking to Tadgh was like touching a part of a world he had only heard stories about.

Tadgh blinked rapidly. "Of course I am Fae. What else would I be, when you are in the land of the Fae?" Struck by a thought, a small smile crept onto his face. He could hear the awe that was in Kieran's tone, whether the human had intended it to slip out or not. And he wouldn't lie, it did stroke his ego. It reminded him of long, long ago, when he ran in the wilds of the mortal realm alongside giant deer and magical, white backed cows, when people were more open to the strange, and left offerings of honey bread and milk in exchange for blessings. "Am I not what you expected? I suppose you would not have expected the Slua Sidhe and the water nymphs either?" A little contemplatively he added. "If you wanted to understand everything about this place you would be here for a very, very long time. Probably you would have to stay longer even that Una has."
Lapsing back into silence, the contemplative air keeping as he reflected more on the past. Should I ask what the mortal realm is like now? they were leaving the wild ways when I last knew of any humans well enough to care what they did.

Kieran observed Tadgh with a mix of fascination and uncertainty, trying to process the implications of his words. It was a lot to take in — being in the land of the Fae, encountering beings he had only read about in stories. Yet, here was Tadgh, embodying that very essence. ❝I... I suppose I didn't really know what to expect,❞ Kieran finally admitted, his voice tinged with wonder. ❝I've heard tales, of course, but to stand here and hear it from you...❞ He trailed off, realizing how inadequate words felt in capturing the surreal moment. The thought of ancient times, when humans and fae mingled more freely, resonated with him. He imagined a world where the boundaries between the mundane and the magical were blurred, where such encounters were commonplace. Tadgh's mention of Una and the implication of time passing differently here only deepened Kieran's intrigue. ❝Una... she's been here a while, then?❞ He ventured cautiously, his mind racing with questions about this place and its inhabitants, eager to unravel more of its mysteries.

"Yes, Una has been here for a very long time indeed. Long enough that if she were to go back to the Mortal Realm now, she would turn to dust. Although I cannot tell you exactly how long she has been here, I can tell you that she too was tricked into coming here. Not for dancing though. She was tricked by love, though she doesn't often speak of it to me. She has a child, once a feral little thing. That was how I got to know her actually." Tadgh paused, aware that the words seemed to be tembling out of him unprompted. Shrugging, he continued. "I found the little witchling wandering the woods, enchanting my deer. I'm surprised I managed to find her mother at all. But I did, and I visited Una enough to watch the child grow. It was a privledge to do so. We Fae cherish our children." An awful premonition struck Tadgh then. Kieran had said that it was his sister that was missing. It could be very probable that The reason she had been spirited away were the same reasons Una had been kept in Faeland. "Exactly how old is your sister?" "

❝Your words weave a tale as intricate as the patterns in a faerie circle,❞ Kieran remarked, his brow furrowed in thought. He leaned forward slightly, his curiosity piqued by Tadgh's revelations about Una and her mysterious past. ❝I never knew Una had such a history,❞ Kieran admitted softly, his gaze drifting to the darkened sky. ❝To be tricked into the Faeland for love... It's both tragic and romantic in a way only the Fae seem to understand.❞ He paused, processing Tadgh's account with a mix of wonder and concern. ❝As for my sister,❞ Kieran replied, his voice tinged with worry, ❝She's just turned twenty-three this past spring. A young age, by mortal standards.❞ He glanced at Tadgh, a flicker of apprehension crossing his features. ❝Do you think... really could she have been taken for similar reasons as Una? Is there a chance she is actually even in Faeland?❞ Tadgh's revelation had opened a door to possibilities Kieran had never considered, and now, the unsettling notion that his sister's disappearance might be tied to the mysterious realm of the Fae lingered heavily in the air between them.

Tadgh nodded apprehensively in response to Kieran's questions, though his mind lingered on his previous statements. This one would do very well in Faeland. He has a silver tongue on him that would charm even the most bored courtier. "If she entered with you, she certainly would still be here. Though finding where exactly she would be will be a challenge for sure, I do indeed suspect that she may have been taken for the same reasons as Una." Hesitating, he wondered if it would be worth telling him the truth bluntly or not. Then again, there was every chance that that would not be the case. Tadgh had a tendency to always assume the worst first, and he didn't want to stress out the man more than he already was- especially if it was an unfounded idea. "Fae with large houses and power find it amusing to keep humans as slaves, tricking them into believing whatever will keep them here for their amusement. Some pay the humans with pebbles, enchanted to look like jewels and gems so the humans are charmed into staying in the hopes of receiving more."
Tadgh plodded in silence for a few moments. On the horizon, dawn was beginning to rise, streaking the sky with beautiful amber and pale pink tones. He watched it reverently, for the dawn and dusk were his favourite time of day. The world was quiet, holding it's breath as the day arose or died. Though for most Fae, the dawn heralded time to sleep, to leave their revelries and close their eyes. "The practice is dying out though. It seems to be happening less and less as times goes on- I suppose that has to do with men believing us to be but tales now." "We should find somewhere to sleep soon, I suppose." He added, as the sun arose higher.

Kieran listened intently to Tadgh's somber explanation, his brow furrowing with concern as he processed the implications of what he was hearing. The idea of humans being kept as slaves by the Fae, deceived by illusions of wealth, stirred a mix of anger and sadness within him. It was a stark reminder of the dangers and complexities of Faeland, a world where enchantment and deception could intertwine in such cruel ways.
He glanced at Tadgh, noting the weight of sorrow in his eyes as he spoke of the fading practice. It struck Kieran that Tadgh, despite his stoic demeanor, carried a deep empathy for the plight of both humans and Fae alike. The dawn's delicate hues painted a backdrop to their conversation, casting a serene contrast to the unsettling truths Tadgh had revealed. As Tadgh mentioned finding somewhere to sleep, Kieran nodded in agreement, his mind still grappling with the revelations. ❝Yes, finding a safe place to rest would be wise,❞ he replied quietly, his gaze lingering on the horizon where the sun continued its ascent. ❝Thank you for sharing that with me, Tadgh. It's... enlightening, if troubling.❞
He sighed softly, the weight of their journey and the mysteries of Faeland settling heavily on his shoulders. ❝I suppose we should keep moving then, find shelter before the day grows brighter,❞ Kieran suggested, glancing around at their surroundings. ❝Do you know of any safe places nearby?❞ He trusted Tadgh's instincts and knowledge of the land more than his own; after all, Tadgh had proven himself invaluable since they began their journey together. Despite the dangers and uncertainties ahead, Kieran found solace in their partnership, knowing that together they stood a better chance of navigating the treacherous paths of Faeland.

"Over there is as good as any." Pointing to a grove of trees becoming more visible in the pale morning light, he diverted their path towards it. He didn't go far into the tiny grove before he slung his bedroll and satchel down. "In the satchel you'll find something edible for sure. There is water as well, help yourself to that if you wish, but only lay the food out."
He began scraping the leaf letter together into two thick and low piles, carefully checking and flinging out any stones as he did so. "I can give you fair warning about the food here at least I suppose. Food offered to you may seem innocuous as kind even. Most Fae use it as a method to trick you- most use it as a way to keep humans here forever. You should be fine when you're with me, though if you eat any food of mine, ask first and make sure when I invite you to eat I say that I offer the food freely with no wish to keep you against your will." "Mayhap it would be a good idea for you to carry a bag of your own food. I can show you where I forage, for any food picked and prepared by your own hand is safest." He mused as he unrolled the bedroll and flicking it out over one of the leaf litter piles.

Kieran listened intently as Tadgh spoke, his curiosity piqued by the cautionary tale about Fae food. His gaze shifted from the carefully prepared leaf piles to Tadgh's distinctive features — the antlers that gracefully framed his head, and the unique blend of human and deer-like qualities that marked him as one of the Fae. ❝I appreciate the warning,❞ Kieran replied, his voice carrying a soft, contemplative tone. ❝Thank you for showing me this place,❞ Kieran continued, stepping closer to inspect the bedroll and the makeshift seating area Tadgh had arranged. ❝I'll make sure to remember your advice about the food. It seems Fae customs can be quite intricate.❞ He thought about Tadgh's suggestion regarding carrying his own food. It made sense, especially in a realm where even something as innocuous as a meal could bind a person unwittingly. ❝I think I'll take you up on that offer to show me where to forage,❞ Kieran said with a nod, a hint of gratitude in his voice. ❝It's comforting to know I can rely on myself for sustenance.❞
As he settled onto the leaf litter beside Tadgh, Kieran felt a sense of quiet companionship settle between them. Despite the strangeness of the Fae realm and the warnings about its inhabitants, Tadgh's presence felt reassuring, a bridge between the unknown and the familiar. ❝I suppose there's much more to learn about this place,❞ Kieran mused aloud, casting a thoughtful glance towards the grove around them, now bathed in the gentle hues of early morning. ❝And I'm grateful to have you as my guide through it.❞

Tadgh simply nodded, the dawn's heralding of sleep now taking it's toll on him. The human put him on edge initially, but he could sense himself warming to the idea of having a companion. After all these years, the change would be good for him, he supposed.
"If you wish to eat, please do. I offer it freely, with no wish to keep you against your will." He said, a wry note in his voice as he helped himself to some bread and cheese. He'd secured these at the Samhain celebration, and though it was starting to go slightly hard the bread was still good. "I'll find something for your own provisions when dusk falls. For now we can sleep though, it will be safe to do so without a watch for mast sleep during the day. Some fauns or dryads may take interest but they should not wake us. The bedroll is for you." Tadgh waved a handful of cheese at the bedroll laid out on the nest of leaves as he took his place on the other, wrapping himself in his cloak and finishing off his dinner.

Kieran watched Tadgh with a mix of curiosity and caution. The fae's words and actions were surprisingly hospitable, and though the offer of food was tempting, Kieran hesitated, mindful of the old tales about fae offerings. But the long day and his growling stomach won out, and he cautiously reached for the bread and cheese, taking a small bite.
❝Thank you,❞ Kieran murmured, still unsure but grateful for the kindness. The food, though a bit stale, was nourishing and tasted of the earth and celebration from which it came. He finished his portion quickly, then settled onto the bedroll, pulling his jacket tighter around himself. As Kieran lay there, he found his eyelids growing heavy. The forest was oddly peaceful, with only the faint rustling of leaves and distant calls of night creatures. Tadgh's presence, initially unsettling, now felt more like a protective barrier against the unknown dangers of this strange world.
❝Good night.❞ Kieran said, not expecting a response. He wrapped himself in the cloak provided, his thoughts wandering to what the next day might bring. Before long, the weariness of his journey overtook him, and he drifted off into a deep, dreamless sleep. As dusk approached, Kieran awoke to the soft, golden light filtering through the trees. The air had cooled, and a gentle breeze stirred the leaves overhead. He stretched and yawned, feeling more rested than he had in days.

ears twitching, Tadgh slitted his eyes at the sounds of Kieran stirring. Sitting up and yawning widely he slung his cloak back behind him, stood and stretched. As he ate some dried fruit from his satchel, he contemplated how to go about the next movements for the night. Should he leave Kieran here to guard his stuff? But he didn't want to leave the human alone, especially with the shadows of the sinking sun indicating the darkness of night's steady approach. But foraging unencumbered would be truly a relief- but then again, he had foraged while carrying his stuff for years and years now, so while he was used to it, the appeal of being able to move through the forest was very appealing. Sighing, he knew better. And it still sucked.
"Are you hungry? You can have something of mine." Grogginess was very clear in his voice, and he yawned again, rubbing his eyes. Of his two waterskins, he tossed one to Kieran. Then he proceeded to scratch around in his satchel eventually finding what he wanted he drew out a tightly rolled up drawstring bag and lobbed it after the water skin.
"Here, I think we should do some foraging first, so you can have your own food without having to ask me or wait for me to offer." He punctuated this with another yawn and blink. "Next time we camp, please remind me to take the time to make a fire. I can't be bothered now, but I would kill for some tea. Did you rest well?"

Kieran caught the water skin with a grunt, then fumbled with the drawstring bag as it landed beside him. He glanced at Tadgh, who looked half-asleep but still managed to appear as if he was in the middle of a thousand thoughts. A faint smile tugged at Kieran’s lips despite his own grogginess. He was used to these early morning routines now, and Tadgh’s habit of mumbling through them was oddly comforting. ❝Thanks, Tadgh,❞ he said, unrolling the drawstring bag and peering inside at its contents. ❝I’ve got a few more hours of sleep left in me, but I’m good enough for now. I don’t need much to get moving.❞
Kieran took a swig from the water skin and handed it back, then glanced around their campsite. The shadows were lengthening, and he could see the shifting hues of dusk starting to settle in. He knew how important it was for Tadgh to forage, not just for sustenance but for the sense of freedom it gave him. It was almost a ritual, a way to connect with the forest in the way that Tadgh did so effortlessly.
❝Don’t worry about the fire now. I can’t blame you for not having the energy for it,❞ Kieran said, his voice still thick with sleep. ❝And yeah, tea would’ve been nice. I’ll remember to remind you next time. But in the meantime, let’s get some foraging done. I’ve been meaning to learn a thing or two about what’s edible around here, anyway. Might as well make myself useful.❞ He stood up, stretching out his limbs with a low groan. As he started to follow Tadgh into the forest, he couldn’t help but add, ❝And for what it’s worth, I slept okay. Better than I have in a while. Thanks for asking.❞
