Currently rereading POT, but a big gripe I have with the books in general is that there is no clear distinction of power/fighting level that cats have. It would be so cool to have different subranks of fighting level, like how senior warriors are older/more experienced. For example, it can be estimated that Sorreltail is far from Hollyleaf’s battle skill, but there’s not much to tell us the difference between, say, Berrynose, Thornclaw, Sandstorm, and Mousefur.
We do begin to get a peek at how fighting works when Tigerstar is training Lionblaze, but if we fast forward to the Dark Forest Battle in TLH, there’s no anticipation, tension, or genuine fear we have that the most important characters won’t make it out alive. To be honest, does anyone else feel that Firestar just fights like an average warrior?
Here’s how I would rank a few of the better-known cats from the first three series:
How would you rank the cats below in terms of fighting prowess? (Assume all are at peak strength, ignore timeline)
Firestar Bluestar Tigerstar (The first) Bramblestar Squirrelstar Hawkfrost Ivypool

S tier: Firestar and Tigerstar both get heaps of praise put on them and in general perform really well in their battles. Tigerstar got accolades as the best fighter many times in TPB and Firestar ends up eventually becoming his equal and surpassing him with cunning.
A tier: Hawkfrost was really potent with all of the fights he's won after training in PoT and OOTS, but I can't help but get the feeling he's still a step behind Tigerstar. He's just the student to his master, and while he's good, he's not quite as good.
B tier: Ivypool's battle accomplishments are also quite good, with her fighting outnumbered on several occasions quite well and her battle skills and Dark Forest tactics being praised by several other characters. She's not as strong as Hawkfrost though since she couldn't beat him even while he was injured.
C tier: Brambleclaw, Squirrelflight, and Bluestar are all roughly in a similar tier which I would say suits warriors who are maybe above average, but otherwise have no particular great accolades or combat feats. Bramblestar could arguably be a little higher based off of killing Hawkfrost, but cheap shotting Hawkfrost while he was busy fighting Ivypool and already wounded isn't really all that great.

Decided to make a tier list of the best fighters (didn't rank every character, just characters who have been in notable battles) Dustpelt and Thornclaw aren't on there, but I'd put them in A tier, simply because of experience. I also didn't put any of the medicine cats or the characters I don't care about, or the ones we haven't seen enough to rank them.

In my opinion:
Tigerstar 1 Firestar Bramblestar (As Brambleclaw) Hawkfrost Ivypool Bluestar Squirrelstar
I have to say, I never think of Firestar as particularly strong fighter, but he does actually have a lot of skill in practice. He just seems so normal!
There really isn't that much to compare the fighting abilities of most characters, so most of the time I just go on vibes for this kind of thing. Also, we are never really given that much depth to fighting styles because battles don't happen enough for it to matter.
