Art Fight 2024 attack thread

I wish they added a reply function to artfight!! they said they would in the patch notes and then they Didn't (or at least, I can't figure out how) but

He's so pretty! I love the green and grey it's so nice. the pose wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, beside that paw pointed up. It looks alright as long as you don't look too closely at it LMAO

Yes, I'm gone most of the month, so opted for quality and quantity for the first week and dragging my drawing pad around for anything else.

My Artfight wrap up!

I did 11 attacks in total this year. Most of the flat work took ~1-2hr, the two full shaded were ~3hr and the full scene took probably 6hr across two days. All of them (except the last two, which were for a friend) were done in the first 10 days of the month tho, because I can't keep a daily habit to save my life (and also got hit by the awful Depression Stick)

My focus was using references for fullbody cat anatomy and learning the shape gestures for fur and hind legs specifically. On those two counts, I think my month was a success! I really wanted to get better at figuring out what shapes/angles made for different "feeling" fur and texture.

My next project will be specifically face anatomy (esp more cartoony/stylized faces; I think I'm alright at typical cat muzzle shapes, but making the face feel "sharp" or "chubby" is impossible for me right now). And eyes? Eyes suck. I've also never done an expression study before and it SHOWS I have no idea where to position the eyes or mouth lines to give a vibe.

I'm pretty happy with how everything turned out! This artfight really helped my confidence: I feel like I would be able to draw a lot more complex things now that I've learned how to actually use a pose reference, and I feel somewhat confident doing basic poses (sitting front and side view; standing three quarters and side) without reference at all.

I also did a four frame animation, which, while simple, is actually the first thing I've ever animated in color! That was super fun, but it was more meant as an "ani-sketch" and was just a copy of the frame with minor edits rather than a fully plotted out animation cycle. (I did sketch one of those, but it ended up being Too Much and I dropped it)

I think my favorite of them all was Maplebloom, where I kinda put together everything I learned from the rest of the month in a more "finished" form.

And that's my Artfight =o I'm super excited to use these new skills to maybe do some designs for Granite Circle cats and BloodClan sparklecats!! Designing is so much harder than drawing by ref tho :(
