Not wild about any of the TBC protags, but I think Shadowsight had the most substance for me.
Though, I didn't like how the plot warps around to make the reader feel bad for him.

Shadowsight and Bristlefrost are the clear favorites here, imo. Hard to pick between them.

Personally, for me, Bristlefrost, while Rootspring being a close second. I just...had no interest in Shadowsight as a character at all.

I personally prefer Rootspring, then Shadowsight, then Bristlefrost. Bristlefrost was cool but not too different from other previous protagonists in being ambitious, brave, lovesick, and used, though ALITM definitely did wonders for her character, and not just at the end. Shadowsight is the most important to the plot but I feel his personality doesn’t really get to shine as much throughout the series since he has to carry the major plot points and be Ashfur’s victim and the arc’s punching bag. I think ASC does him more justice. Rootspring I feel has his personality clear and is relevant to the plot of Bramblestar’s ghost. He has a little arc about learning to accept himself, his heritage and his powers, learn to become more selfless, mature and develop his relationship with Bristlefrost, and I think Bristlefrost’s permadeath is an interesting change to the more wrapped-up nature of the other protagonists’ main POV arcs and leaves room for more exploration of his character and how he changed after his experience over the arc. He feels the most unfinished and unresolved of the protagonists and I think there’s a lot of potential with him that could be explored in the future. He’s also just funny. I like funny.

Shadowsight, then Bristle, then Rootspring. I personally thought he was the most compelling and interesting of the three. Although I loved Bristlefrost and Rootspring as well. All three are some of my favorite characters in the series.

Shadowsight is my favorite. The common complaint I hear about him is that his personality feels underdeveloped, but I think that works for his character. After being manipulated he clearly struggles with his self worth, major parts of his identity are torn away (StarClan connection, medicine cat status), and he experiences a ton of social rejection. It makes sense that these things would suppress his personality/sense of self. His characterization in ASC feels like an organic progression, I can believe that's the cat Shadowsight would grow into once he had some time to recover and find himself again.

Shadowsight easily. Bristlefrost and Rootspring? Mmmm…. They’re interchangeable personally. Don’t like/dislike either more than the over. Their PoV’s were lackluster imo.

Shadowsight my beloved <3
Bonus points go to him for me because he was not involved in any (protagonist) romance with questionable development and forced chemistry unlike with the other two protags from his arc.
I personally adore Bristlefrost outside of her romance with Rootspring and still think her character arc and development suffered a lot from being written into a relationship with him in the first place (that she initially rejected multiple times but then switched to reciprocating his feelings mid arc). I also like Rootspring outside his relationship with Bristlefrost as well but not as much as I thought I would like him before actually reading TBC last year.

I like Shadowsight but his personality wasn't really anything,he was only interesting because of the outer plot.
Personal I like Bristlefrost the best, if they hadn't done her dirty with loving Rootspring her personality was very interesting to read about.
Rootspring was alright, he's not bad but wasn't anything special.
Bristleroot is cute but it definitely ruined bristlefrosts character. People would have liked her better If it never happened.
