Okay, so I was thinking again about how the clans are super bloated in wc, and how background characters get zero attention. And I remember someone saying that the solution to bloat was less about killing cats, and more just giving cats personality and things to do. So, I wanted to suggest some extra jobs cats can do in the clans! - Construction- building dens, strengthening walls, maintaining the camp. I think this is a job that cats do in canon sometimes, but we don’t see it very often.
- Educator- history, traditions, plant/animal identification. Seperate from mentors, educators would teach more specific concepts that aren’t strictly related to hunting/fighting. Could also be great for elders!
- Gardening- pretty much what it says on the tin. Medicine cats need herbs constantly, so it’d be useful to set up some sort of garden they could collect plants from. Other cats could help water it, get rid of weeds, grow new plants, etc.
- Guard- also pretty straightforward. Keeping watch of camp, pretty much. Not the most exciting job, admittedly, but there’s probably some way to make it fun. Maybe a jokester guard who makes cats answer a riddle to get back in camp? A group of friends all joking around while on guard duty together?
- Customs/Traditions- okay, this one is a little more vague than others, so let me explain. Pretty much, this one is about performing cultural customs/rituals/whatever. For example, if your clan has a specific way of burying the dead, these cats will do it. Emphasis on the importance of art? These cats will be your artists. Doing some sort of holiday? These cats will prepare all the stuff you need. This is mostly for fanclans, but you can use it for canon too!
Of course, there’s a lot more jobs you could give to your cats, but these are just a few examples. Some of these could be entire roles, while others might just be a hobby or side job for cats. Feel free to use all of these in your own clans or fanfics, and if you have any other ideas for jobs, I’d love to hear hear them! Thanks for reading

Guards are already a thing. Camps are guarded daily and nightly by at least one cat, sometimes two.

Obviously these extra jobs/roles are voluntary for the elders and queens and I get what your saying

I had one of my fan characters create a new role after he realized his disability made being a warrior impossible. He wasn’t happy constantly failing and started focusing on what he could do instead. He learned to predict tides, currents, floods, and the like for his clan. This is very important because his clan lives near the water, and floods are an issue for them. He’s now trying to apply this to the sky so he can predict weather.
I had a few other ideas like herb gatherer, messager, etc. I will probably need to look up that file. I brainstormed them as ways cats with other skills and those with disabilities could contribute to the clan. If they wished in the disabled cats’ cases— there’s no shame in retiring because you can’t do something.

I still think it would be great to have a deputy's aide/advisor
esp in big Clans, there's just simply too much for one person to manage. Having a young warrior to help them keep track of tasks that need to be delegated, or be the deputy's voice if they need to send messages to multiple fronts at once, or simply to remind them of things they might be forgetting. The deputy's aide is seen as an "apprenticeship" to being the next deputy and cats that have the role are more likely to be considered as deputy. A cat probably wouldn't spend their whole life as the deputy's aide, it's something young warriors with promise are given to prove themselves worthy and learn how to manage a Clan.
Their time as aide is usually concluded when they are given an apprentice of their own to train, as that is their new full time job, freeing the position for another young warrior.
Having a similar position for a strategist could also be cool. While the deputy is the cat that is in the chain of command and is the hands on organizer, the strategist works behind the scenes to plan for any possible threats or inefficacies and work out solutions for them. It's too much to ask the deputy to spend all their time thinking about solving problems before they happen as well as managing patrols and coordinating other tasks, and the leader has to be free to lend a paw at a moment's notice and be a figurehead--their diplomatic ties with the other Clans might make them biased and unable to correctly identify threats; it would be unseemly to have a paranoid cat as your Clan's voice and core diplomat.
Because the strategist is supposed to be a bit paranoid, able to prepare for the worst-case scenario, and be creative enough but also practical enough to come up with strategies or policies that are able to be implemented to mitigate risk. They don't have any real power on their own (maybe in times of war, they are seen as another commander on the battlefield) but advise the leader and deputy of potential risks. It's up to the leader to decide if the risks are worth worrying about or not.
