I think it's really funny/weird that the elders have one job and that is burying dead bodies. The dovewings silence thread reminded me of it but why is it tradition that the cats with bad joints and bones be the ones to dig graves? Like they're already staring death in the face it seems a little cruel lol

I think it's because they're so close to death that they're the ones to do it. There may be an element here of them being a kind of mediator between life and death.

I always thought it was because they've known everyone in the Clan the longest.
(It's also not their only job, either. They tell stories to teach lessons and to inform history that could be useful for the present situation.)

I agree with both the above posts, especially Vectoring's theory.
I also always thought (perhaps crassly) that the elders ergo the closest and most likely to die bury the dead in case of disease....

But I especially like the idea of them being mediators between life and death

I always thought it was their job because they had the most wisdom in the Clan or something similar to that.

honestly a lot of things with the elders are messed up in this series. remember how they just left a bunch of elders behind in tnp or something? like they were just waiting to die. that’s so sad.

They likely starved... I'd like a short story about all those elders finding kittypet homes cuz oof.. Unless I miss remembering, the elders chose to stay behind because the trip would’ve likely killed them horribly anyway and they would’ve slowed everyone else down. There are stories Where are the characters do figure it out (better bones AU Is one) But it’s still a major concern. And one story that followed the books pretty faithful in some aspects made it clear that they chose to stay behind because they are weak and frail and as much as the characters would have emotionally wanted them to come along, they would’ve either died painfully or slowed everyone down. It sounds cruel, but it made a lot of sense…
