I’m rereading A Dangerous Path, and I don’t like Sandstorm very much especially as a love interest. It’s obvious she has feelings for Firestar, but he’s completely oblivious. That’s not what bothers me though. She is so rude, controlling, and jealous. She gets annoyed every time he talks to someone who isn’t her. She tries to rush him through conversations with others, and immediately resorts to making passive aggressive remarks. (“Someone has to hunt for the Clan,” when Firestar is talking to Graystripe and Mistyfoot.) She shows no interest in anything that’s important to him, and instead tries to shut it down by insisting it’s nonsense or it doesn’t matter. She gets mad at him over every little slight he makes in her eyes, which always leads to him having to hunt her down and apologize because she refuses to communicate and expects him to just read her mind.
Maybe she gets better. I can’t remember much of their relationship. But as of right now, I genuinely don’t understand how they ever became a couple.

I don't particularly care for FireSand as a couple being that bully to lover has never been a trope I've liked & once they get together they don't seem to take each other's feelings into consideration very much. Obviously you pointed out the Sandstorm side of things but Firestar was not a great mate to her either by not giving her an apprentice & constantly making feel insecure due to his ghost mistress.
They're all right in books they're not the focus, they're good parents. As for the question, no Sandstorm did not start out as a good mate to Firestar but seemed to become a better mate as they grew older.

And I thought Firestar was the bad mate...
I agree with you now about Sandstorm being a bad mate as well. In theory, they were both bad mates initially, but I saw improvement as the series went on. Their entire romance just seemed rushed and unenjoyable to read about. They both have their flaws, but I think it was mostly the Erin's fault for making this somewhat dumb relationship. They wanted Firestar to "get over" Spottedleaf's death so he could have another lover, yet they continue to bring Spottedleaf back and back over and over again. If you wanted Firestar to get over his previous crush's death and have another lover, why keep bringing her back? So in reality, you should just be mad at the Erin's for making this awful choice. (Ofc their relationship improves as time goes on, but did they really have to keep bringing Spottedleaf back? I think not.)

Yeah, I never understood the whole Spottedleaf thing. They spoke a handful of times, so it’s weird he was so infatuated with her. The only excuse I can think of is the fact she kept visiting him in his dreams, seeming to help him with his problems, and in turn he felt grateful for her help which fueled his love for her. Even then it never felt like it was actually Spottedleaf visiting him, but more like Firestar’s imagination so desperate for her that he dreams about her. (I know that’s not the case, but that’s how it feels to me every time he dreams of her.)
Back to Sandstorm though… Another thing she kept doing that annoyed me is that whenever she was angry with Firestar, she would call out to other cats and try to make them take her side. “Dustpelt, what do YOU think about what Fireheart just did?!” not because she actually wanted their opinion, but because she wanted someone to be on her side and yell at Fireheart. Or she would go to hang out with Graystripe while openly boasting about it to try and rub it into Firestar’s face that she wasn’t talking to him, she was talking to someone “better.” It was so childish.
I will say the end where they said they loved each other and worked together to take the dogs to the gorge was very sweet. That is the Fire x Sand I always remember. Too bad there haven’t been more moments like that between them so far… I’m going to be mad if we go back to this petty arguments and passive aggressiveness in TDH. I remember they get into a fight in FQ which makes me apprehensive though
