Chose earlier than 1950s because I love 30s-40s big band and jazz <3 But I also listen to 80s classic rock and 2005-2015 punk rock.

It was between 80s and 90s, but I went with 80s. I just love New Wave, Goth Rock, Post-Punk and Synth Pop!

I have a theory that people often pick the decade from when they were a kid/teenage I have heard this theory before - I think it's specifically the music you listen to between the ages of 13-20?

If that were true i would have picked the 2000s instead of the 80s but the 80s just plain slap.

My parents raised me on the stuff they listened to as teens, and I didn't listen to much current-day pop growing up, so I ended up with a preference for the 80s that has stuck with me into adulthood. I think the "music you listen to as a kid" theory holds weight.

The only time I really listened to modern music was if I could hide the fact I was doing it, otherwise it was christian radio all day long and I couldn't hate it more. That or, my grandma's vinyls which would have included 60s and 70s and while I def enjoy that stuff and it holds a lot of nostalgia my music taste developed on its own and likely as a way to rebel and get as far away from horribly mediocre 4 strings note guitar and the blandest drum beat you've ever heard sung over by a tenor as humanly possible. I like all kinds of decades and genres but 80s or 80s-soundaikes are still the favorite.
But I guess I'm the weird anomaly here.

if that were true i probably would have picked the 2010s or 2020s. even though the 2000s isn't far off and i did listen to 2000s music growing up, it was when i was younger than 13 and i listened to different 2000s music than i do now.
i think the more common theme in my music listening habits is that most of the music i listen to tends to have similar political messaging. matt elliott, stray from the path, immortal technique, etc all share similar political themes. critical of the military industrial complex, critical of corporate rule, etc.

I love 90'susic because for me, it is very nostalgic and reminds me of the good parts of my childhood. Though the music between 2009-2011 also brings good vibes for me haha

70s-80s maybe. had a lot of cool and fun things on the musical scene at the same time; just in terms of personal faves, ABBA, Boney M, Leonard Cohen, Queen, Simon and Garfunkel were all active, and i think Loreena McKennitt debuted toward the end of that period too.
i do get the music you grew up with argument, i grew up with the former mostly bc my parents loved them so they stick with me. i also love the modern music i grew up with so like 2000s-2010s, and classical music actually bc i learned piano with classical.

Some of the music from the early 2000s is nostalgic to me. I also loved jazz at one point.
