In the prologue, Mistystar and Reedwhisker dive into StarClan's spring to travel to the world of the living.
Ivypool, Dovewing, Rootspring, and Whistlepaw are selected to go on a quest. Splashstar refuses to send a RiverClan member on this quest so Wasp is chosen to represent RiverClan. Squirrelstar still doesn't want to intervene against Splashtail so Jayfeather uses the new warrior code to depose her. This forces Squirrelstar to reveal that if she refuses to intervene in RiverClan's affairs, it is because she did not obtain her 9 lives: she fears that Brambleclaw will succumb to the after-effects left by Ashfur so she does not didn't want him to give his life back to StarClan. Tigerstar reveals to Gathering that Frostpaw, Nightheart, and Sunbeam saw Splashstar kill Harelight. Splashstar says he exiled Harelight. He accuses Frostpaw of lying and Tigerstar of taking advantage of his lies to invade RiverClan again. Berryheart compares Frostpaw to Darktail, accusing him of lying in order to provoke a war against RiverClan. Harestar rallies with Tigerstar. Leafstar announces that she will support Splashstar if Tigerstar and Harestar intend to overthrow him. Squirrelstar refrains. Yarrowleaf and Snowbird don't trust Frostpaw and want to stop Tigerstar from sending ShadowClan to war with RiverClan. They plot with Splashstar and Berryheart to overthrow Tigerstar, who either foolishly believes Frostpaw's lies or suspects she is lying but uses her lies to be able to annex RiverClan. Yarrowleaf and Snowbird fabricate evidence that ShadowClan has trespassed and hunted in RiverClan territory. Splashstar asks Leafstar to help RiverClan overthrow Tigerstar, reminding him that he once wanted to drive SkyClan out, that he annexed RiverClan, and that now he wants to do it again, having Frostpaw's lies as justification. RiverClan and SkyClan attack ShadowClan. Spireclaw and Fringewhisker face Berryheart and Nettlesplash but they don't want to fight their mothers. Berryheart told Spireclaw that she was right to be opposed to the new warrior code as well as Fringewhisker's coming to ShadowClan. Berryheart tells Nettlesplash to attack her daughter, which she can't bring herself to do, so Berryheart attempts to kill Fringewhisker but Spireclaw gets in the way and takes the hit instead of his mate. Spireclaw dies. Tigerstar loses a life, and when he wakes up, he is forced to abdicate and give up his lives as Birchpaw is held hostage. Frostpaw then sees Pinenose, Yellowfang, Sagewhisker, Dawnpelt, Littlecloud, Raggedstar, and Flametail taking back the 7 lives he has left from Tigerstar and he becomes Tigerheart again. Splashstar leaves Berryheart to lead the ShadowClan camp. Frostpaw is taken to RiverClan's camp as a prisoner. Tigerheart and Fringewhisker are exiled from ShadowClan by Berryheart and Birchpaw, Tawnypelt, Shadowsight, Pouncestep, Lightleap, Blazefire, and Cloverfoot come with them.
