About
Welcome to The Elemental War! This is an Avatar the Last Airbender 1x1 roleplay for me and my friend: CreamCrow, set in a timeline where Aang died with the Air Nomads and the Fire Nation teamed up with the Northern Water Tribe, forming an alliance as they raise the next Avatar together, now sixty years have passed from that time and the old Avatar is dead.
The roleplay splits into two main groups of characters, one is the new Avatar and his group of friends as they travel the globe, learn to bend the elements, and end up in the middle of an all out war between the Alliance and the rest of the world.
The second group follows along a team of young Alliance members as they hunt down the Avatar with the intent to kill him so the Avatar will be reborn in the Fire Nation and back in their control.
It is a 1x1 so unfortunately we aren’t accepting any joiners. But you are more than welcome to read along!
Also, all the credit for the coding goes to CreamCrow, and obviously avatar the last airbender and its world belong to its creators.

Welcome to the world of Avatar! Chances are, if you’re joining this roleplay you already know what’s up, but in case anything needs some clarification, I’ll go over some things.
The World of Avatar is divided up into four nations.
The Fire Nation controls fire and live in the red parts of the map, the Fire Nation takes inspiration from Japan and in this roleplay, they’ve teamed up with the Northern Water tribe to form the Alliance and have a base close by the Northern Water Tribe as well as territory that they occupy in the Earth Kingdom and two of the old Air Temples, which the Alliance uses as war bases and to show exactly what they’re capable of.
The Air Nomads are fairly nomadic and are inspired by the Tibetan monks and while they do tend to move a lot, they do have four Air Temples in each corner of the world which were their homes until the Fire Nation destroyed them, leaving only a few wandering Air Nomads left alive. There’s a small Air Nomad colony that has taken sanctuary on Kiyoshi Island, which is where most of the very few remaining airbenders can be found, however there are others scattered across the globe as well.
The Water Tribes are divided into two, the Northern Water Tribe and and the Southern Water Tribe, both located at their respective poles and are inspired by the Inuit people. The Northern Water Tribe is far bigger than their southern cousins and have formed an Alliance with the Fire Nation, staking claim to some territory in the Earth Kingdom, two of the Air Temples, and have a base close by the Fire Nation. The Southern Water Tribe is not involved in the Alliance and remain mostly secluded in their own territory, hoping to avoid the war raging on outside.
The Earth Kingdom is the biggest of all the nations and covers the most ground, with their main city being Ba Sing Se, they are also the only kingdom to have two different sets of rulers. There’s their main leader: the king of Ba Sing Se, and then another ruler: the king of Omashu that mostly sticks to their own city. The Earth Kingdom is also home to a small group of firebenders that left the Fire Nation once the Alliance was formed and now wander the lands as nomads, seeking a place they can call home.
The world of Avatar is also full of spirits from the Spirit World and creatures that are various mixes of normal animals (turtleducks, eelhounds, etc) and the occasional giant lionturtle that roam throughout the oceans.
Plots
Sixty years ago, a comet flew over the world and gave the Fire Nation incredible power, they used this power to destroy almost all the Air Nomads, including the young Avatar Aang, and they would’ve continued on their path of destruction if not for the fact that the comet had passed and they no longer had the power that they did before.
Knowing that the next Avatar would be born in the Water Tribes, the Fire Nation struck an alliance with the Northern Water Tribe and together they found the Avatar and raised him to fight for the Alliance.
For years the Alliance conquered and fought, though even with the Avatar’s help they couldn’t quite seem to win, perhaps because of the infighting within their ranks or the fact that both the Fire Nation and the Northern Water Tribe have been secretly fighting for dominance within the Alliance and neither will stop until the other is completely under their control.
Twenty years ago, Avatar Matilik died and the next Avatar was reborn into the Earth Kingdom; however fearing that they may lose their edge in the war, the Alliance continues to act as though Matilik is still alive, even having his brother Konren disguise himself as Matilik for appearances. It’s a deeply held secret, one that not even everyone in the Alliance know and they will stop at nothing to make sure the next Avatar dies at their hands so they can be reborn into the Fire Nation and back in control of the Alliance, though they may end up with more problems than they realize as the power balance within the Alliance shifts and leaves the two nations fighting for more control.
The Southern Water Tribe remains a fortress locked away from the rest of the world, a safe haven for waterbenders outside the Alliance, however, they have closed their borders for years and aren’t keen to let strangers in. They’ve kept out of the war for this long, but how much longer until they’re forced to pick a side?
The Earth Kingdom remains the biggest stronghold against the power of the Alliance, forcing the ruler of Omashu to ally the independent city with Ba Sing Se in order to keep the Alliance at bay. However, tensions rise within the Earth Kingdom’s own, shaky alliance, forcing the ruler of Omashu to send their own child to the Earth Kingdom capital on a diplomatic quest to keep the Earth Kingdom united.
With the destruction of the Air Temples, whatever small group of airbenders that survived ended up taking shelter on the island of Kiyoshi, which has since become a safe haven for the last airbenders. However, fearing the Alliance, they must stay hidden, lest the Fire Nation come to Kiyoshi to finish what they started.
Meanwhile, angry spirits wander the lands as they take vengeance against the four nations for letting the world become so out of balance that even the Avatar became nothing more than a tool in their warfare.
All the while, the new Avatar works at a tea shop in Ba Sing Se, completely unaware of the power he possesses or the journey he is about to take.
Basically, this roleplay will follow along two separate groups, group one will focus on the Avatar and his friends as they journey across the globe, master the elements, and get caught in the middle of an all out war.
Group two will focus on a team of young but highly skilled Alliance soldiers as they search for the New Avatar and seek to kill him.
Along the way, all two groups will face many challenges and need to rely on each other to help them get through this elemental war.

Prologue The smell of smoke lingered in the air as crowds of Fire Nation and Water Tribe soldiers waited below the pulpit to hear from their Avatar. The air was thick and hot, the sort of heavy, damp air that clung to throats and suffocated people.
Konren found it entirely claustrophobic.
Still, regardless of how he might’ve felt, the soldiers waiting for him wanted a show. What sort of Avatar would he be if he didn’t give them what they wanted?
Sighing, Konren stood up straight and dusted off his shoulder pads as he stepped through the red and blue curtains and entered the pulpit, dressed in the traditional blue clothes and furs that people had seen the Avatar in for most of his life.
Spotting Konren, the General at the pulpit nodded and gestured for him to take over, finishing off with a few simply words of introduction. “Soldiers of the Alliance, welcome your Avatar!” The General turned to Konren. “Avatar Matilik!”
The crowd cheered and Konren waved his hand for the General to leave as he took his place on the pulpit, having committed his speech to memory as he addressed the Alliance with an act he had been doing for the last twenty years.
Ever since the death of Konren’s older brother: Avatar Matilik.
Twenty long years had Konren dressed in his brother’s clothes and styled his hair to mimic him. Training his voice to match Matilik’s tone and depth, successfully fooling the world on the biggest con of all time.
Tricking the world into believing the Avatar was still alive.
Konren finished his speech and bid his farewell, going through the motions as if it were second nature as he walked down the halls and to his carriage to take him back to the palace where he knew his wife would be waiting for him.
For twenty long years Konren had pretended to be the Avatar, and for those same years, his wife: Fire Lord Asone had diligently sent group after group in search of the new Avatar throughout the Earth Kingdom. They knew that the Avatar would’ve been born into the Earth Kingdom, and that was dangerous.
If the rest of the world realized that Avatar Matilik was dead, they might get a little reckless, impulsive…hopeful, believing that this could change the tides of the sixty-year long war.
They were wrong.
The Alliance would find the Avatar and kill them and then the cycle would continue and the Alliance would be blessed with another Avatar, one born into the Fire Nation, and just like that, order would be restored.
Konren sighed as he stepped out of his carriage and looked up at the towering palace in the heart of the Fire Nation. His home. The latest group Asone sent out should be back soon, reporting any news of the Avatar. Though Konren doubted anything had changed.
Somehow, for the last twenty years, there had been no sign of this new Avatar. Nothing, not even a rumor. The world was quiet and Konren couldn’t help but wonder if this was the work of the spirits.
That perhaps the spirits were hiding the Avatar from the Alliance, that they were protecting them.
It didn’t matter. The Alliance was strong and they would win. It was only a matter of time. And until then, there was only one question left asking.
Where was the Avatar?

Pen Lu Ba Sing Se | With Yanlin and others. (CreamCrow)
Pen Lu floated through the air in a mystical forest. The trees were colored in pink and purple leaves, while a thick fog blanketed the ground below him. Pen Lu couldn’t explain it, but he knew that this forest was sick and it needed his help. It was begging for him to save it and restore it to its previous glory. He wished he could explain how he knew this, but there was nothing to explain.
He just…knew.
Pen Lu lowered his body to the ground, walking across the lake as a fire burned within his chest.
In the distance, he could make out the vague shape of an animal. A large creature with big antlers, sharp saber teeth, and brown fur. It was staring at him. It knew him—or, it would know him. One of those. Pen Lu couldn’t always tell which.
He reached out to pet the creature, however, as soon as he got close enough, it snorted and ran away, allowing the fog to creep over Pen Lu’s feet and wrap around hi ankles, anchoring him to the rocks.
Pen Lu didn’t struggle, as a voice in his head told him that this was how he was supposed to safe the forest. By giving himself to it. Pen Lu wanted to panic as the fog crept further up his legs and torso, slowly claiming his body and soul for the forest, and yet, no panic rose.
Simply…balance—
A loud thud woke Pen Lu up with a start as he blinked open his eyes and looked around to find himself in the kitchen of the tea shop he worked at. The wooden chair he sat in leaned against the wall, which had a wet stain right where Pen Lu’s head would’ve been.
Pen Lu cringed and reached the back of his hand to his mouth, quickly noting the drool leaking from the corner of his mouth. “Gross,” he whispered, wiping his mouth clean with his apron.
He must have fallen asleep again while waiting for the tea to steam. He hadn’t meant to, honestly, he didn’t know how this kept happening.
’not sleeping at night might have something to do with it,’ he thought to himself and made a face, shaking his hand in the air as he got back to his feet.
He might not be sleeping at night, but Pen Lu had a perfectly good reason for that…
…
…His dreams got really weird at night.
As Pen Lu walked through the kitchen, he quickly took note of two of his coworkers; Ming and Huang, leaning against the counter, watching as a group of Earth Kingdom soldiers entered the tea shop.
Pen Lu quietly walked over to join them. ”Hey guys,” he greeted, still rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“Hi Pen Lu. Fell asleep again?” Huang guessed without looking at him.
Pen Lu frowned. “How’d you know?”
“You have drool on your apron and a giant cowlick riiiight there—“ Ming stated and reached her hand up to poke Pen Lu in the head.
Pen Lu’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment and he quickly ran his hands through his hair in an attempt to get rid of the cowlick. ”Sorry, I don’t know how it keeps happening. Just don’t tell Haichi, if they find out I’m falling asleep on the job, I’m getting fired for sure and then what am I supposed to tell Hayo? I’ve already been fired from three other places, I—”
“Pen Lu!” Ming exclaimed and Pen Lu looked at her. “Shut up,” she ordered and turned back to the counter. “Huang and I won’t tell Haichi about your little work naps,” Ming promised and paused, eyeing the soldiers sitting at a table in the corner. “…So long as you serve the soldiers over there,” she added with a smirk.
Pen Lu wrinkled his nose, making a face. “Do I have to? I hate dealing with the soldiers—“ Pen Lu cut himself off when he saw Ming and Haung’s faces.
With a sigh, Pen Lu bowed his head, accepting his fate. ”Alright, fine, I’ll go deal with them,” he promised and took a deep breath, dusting off his apron before he walked into the sitting area and made his way to the table full of soldiers.
There were at least five of them, laughing and shoving each other. One of them had their bare and dirty feet propped up on the table while another played with a couple rocks in their hands.
Pen Lu cleared his throat as soon as he was close enough to get their attention. ”Welcome to the Porcelain Dragonfly, what can I get for you?” he asked with the biggest smile he could muster.
The soldiers paused what they were doing and Pen Lu felt a pit fall in his stomach at the sight of a familiar face amongst them.
A man around Pen Lu’s age, give or take a year or two his senior, with messy brown hair pulled back into a barely contained ponytail and deep, jade green eyes. He bit on a stalk of barley in his mouth and smirked, leaning over the table to look at him. “Well, if it isn’t my old fan, Pen Lu,” the man greeted.
Pen Lu sighed. ”Hello Yanlin,” he greeted dully.
“Awh, is that any way to greet me?” Yanlin taunted and smirked, elbowing one of his soldier pals. “Guys, this is Pen Lu, we grew up in the same orphanage. But while I went off to support our nation against the Alliance, little Pen Lu chickened out and chose to—what was it again?” he asked with a condescending smile. “Own a flower shop…”
The rest of the soldiers burst into a fit of laughter at that, nudging each other and making jokes.
Pen Lu took a deep breath and mentally counted to ten. He worked here, he had to be nice to the patrons, even if they were Yanlin. ”Catching up’s been great, but I have a job to do. So, again, what can I get for you all?” Pen Lu asked, looking the soldiers over.
Yanlin chuckled. “I’m guessing the flower shop didn’t work out then, did it Pen Lu?” he snickered. “Honestly, you’d have had better luck joining the army, at least then you would’ve been of some use to the Earth Kingdom, instead of wasting your bending at a tea shop.”
Pen Lu tightened his grip on his little notepad, anger boiling in his stomach. ”Are you going to order anything or not? Because I do have other costumers waiting.”
Yanlin waved his hand dismissively in the air. “I’m going to order, don’t worry,” he reassured and Pen Lu’s shoulders relaxed slightly.
Then, Yanlin looked up at him with a glint in his eyes and Pen Lu’s stomach turned.
“But first…” Yanlin turned to the other soldiers. “Do you guys want to know the most embarrassing part of this?” he asked.
Panic rose in his chest as Pen Lu shook his head at Yanlin, hoping, that for once in his life, he’d listen. ”Don’t—“ Pen Lu’s pleas were made in vain as Yanlin cut him off.
“Back in the orphanage, Pen Lu gave me one of his flowers and told me how much he admired me,” Yanlin began and placed his hand over his chest. “Would you believe it if I told you he even confessed his feelings for me?” Yanlin snorted. “As if I’d ever want to be with a boy like him.”
The other soldiers at the table burst into laughter as they joined Yanlin in his mocking.
Pen Lu clenched his jaw, a fire igniting in his stomach as he glowered at Yanlin.
Yanlin caught him looking and smirked, leaning back in his chair as he kicked his feet up on the table. “Had any other failed confessions recently, Penny?”
Something in him snapped.
”You know what? Yanlin, you are such a jerk!” Pen Lu shouted, throwing the notepad onto the table. ”You think you’re so tough because you’re a soldier, but just because you fight doesn’t make you better than anyone else! You’re disgusting!”
Yanlin blinked in surprise as Pen Lu shouted at him, the tips of his fingers burning with heat.
”I don’t know what I even saw in you!” Pen Lu continued, raising his voice. ”You’re nothing but a pigheaded—“ a flicker of red emitted from his fingertips. ”Self-absorbed—“ his palms began to warm. ”Bastard!”
Pen Lu gestured his arm out and a burst of red, hot flames flew from his fingers, lighting the notepad on fire.
Everyone froze and Pen Lu’s blood ran cold as his emerald green eyes locked onto the flames burning on the table. Did he do that? That was impossible, Pen Lu was an earthbender, not…not a—
“Firebender!” one of the soldiers shouted, getting the attention of everyone else in the tea shop as they all turned to watch.
Pen Lu gulped and put his hands up to his chest, shaking his head.”No, no, I’m not—“
Before Pen Lu knew what was happening, the soldiers had pulled out their weapons while one of them ran out of the tea shop, shouting something about getting their superior.
The next few seconds happened slowly as Pen Lu looked around the tea shop, staring at the other customers as they gaped and whispered at him. Then he looked at Ming and Huang behind the counter, both of them staring at him in disbelief and looking away when he caught their eye.
Finally, Pen Lu turned his focus back to the soldiers, staring at each weapon until his eyes landed on Yanlin.
Yanlin eyed him in a mixture of shock and disgust.
Then, instinct kicked in as time sped back up and a chunk of rock was thrown directly at Pen Lu’s face from one of the soldiers.
Pen Lu ducked out of the way and bolted out of the tea shop, his feet gliding against the streets of Ba Sing Se as he booked it as fast as he could away from the fast approaching soldiers.
His apartment wasn’t far from here, and all Pen Lu could do was pray that Hayo was home.

. Hayo
Unfortunately, Hayo was not at home.
She was making her way there now, for no other reason than the library's low activity today. The only proper librarian on staff had made it clear in no uncertain terms that her presence wasn't going to be of much aid for the day. No books had been returned and Hayo's writing still wasn't perfect for creating any copies that the library might prefer to hold onto, though she'd been practicing.
It had been perhaps a little disappointing, but Hayo tossed the strap of her bag on her shoulder and waved a final goodbye to librarian and ignored that growing feeling. Pen Lu should still be at the tea shop, she considered, wondering whether it'd be worth it to make a stop at the market first and getting something fresh for dinner or wait until after she'd drop any unnecessary items on her off at home.
Before she knew it, Hayo's footsteps were leading her in the direction of their small apartment. It was a peaceful walk, all the way up until she arrived at the building. She got out her key to open the door into their rooms, but it was then she heard the commotion.
She turned just a little, twisting the key into the lock and opening the door just a nudge before understand what was going on in the city.
Her eyes widened at the sight of Pen Lu running towards their apartment and even wider at the soldiers she could see a fair distance behind him. She pushed the door to their apartment open a little further, hesitating as towards whether or not they were really coming for Pen Lu-- and whether or not escaping into the building and locking the door behind them would actually give them much time to avoid the soldiers.

Pen Lu
”Hayo!” Pen Lu shouted her name as he sped through the streets. Sweat dripped from his forehead and his heart pounded so loudly in his chest he was sure that it was going to break out. The soldiers were still chasing him, though when he shot his head back to see how far away they were, he quickly took note of the more senior officers joining them.
His eyes widened and he swore softly under his breath, turning back to his fast approaching apartment. ”Hayo! Close the door!” he shouted and as soon as he was close enough, Pen Lu ran right past her and entered their apartment, bending over and panting as he placed his hands on his knees, gasping for breath.
He took a moment to get enough breath to speak up again before looking back to Hayo, his roommate and best friend. ”Closethedoor, closethedoor, closethedoor!” He squeaked out quickly, running up to her to help push the door closed with them both inside.

.
The door shut with a hefty thud, Hayo collapsing her full body weight onto the closed door in a distant hope that the many- far, far too many- soldiers were unlikely to break it down with her standing right there. But that distant hope was quick to vanish as the realization that Pen Lu had been chased by soldiers and they were unlikely to be so polite as that.
She moved to grab some kind of furniture in their apartment to hold the door in place and keep them from just barging in, already feeling just a little out of breath with the actions. When that was finally in place, she could only half turn towards Pen Lu, unwilling to be caught off guard when the soldiers broke into their home. With a panic enveloping her voice, there wasn't a way she wouldn't ask him, "Why are there twenty or more Earth Kingdom soldiers chasing you?"

Pen Lu Pen Lu looked around the apartment and quickly earthbended part of the wall in front of the door to keep it blocked off for a little longer. ”Okay, that should give us some time, we—we need to leave, we have to get out of here,” Pen Lu decided and looked around, grabbing a few random things from the apartment and shoving it into a bag.
”They think I’m a firebender,” he added, glancing back at Hayo.
Pen Lu paused, mulling it over as he glanced back at his hands, flexing his fingers as he recounted the way flames licked the lines in his palm. ”Maybe I am a firebender,” he whispered, brows creasing together as he thought about it.
Now that he was back home, it would be easy to pretend that nothing had happened and it was just a dream or a trick of the light.
Just then, a loud banging came from across the door as the soldiers caught up and yelled for him to give himself up.
Pen Lu yelped.
The soldiers made it a lot harder to forget. ”Okay, we have to go now, I promise I’ll explain on the way,” Pen Lu reassured and looked around, reaching the window in their apartment. Inhaling sharply, Pen Lu looked back at Hayo and gestured for her to follow him. ”I have a plan, but I’m gonna need you to trust me.”

."A firebender?" Hayo could barely manage to ask before flinching at the sound the soldiers made at the door. It was hardly a door anymore, Hayo thought as she shot a glance at the doorway. Not with the large stone that had been lodged in front of it... thanks to Pen Lu's earthbending skills. It didn't seem easy to mistake earthbending for firebending... and yet Pen Lu was hesitant about it too?
Still, there wasn't actually a lot of time to question just what that meant any further. She'd already hesitated too long to help Pen Lu gather any more items in their household before he was encouraging her towards the window. Something told her they weren't likely to see much of the stuff they'd be leaving behind.
Hayo resolved herself, and with a quick intake of breath, she made for the window. As she followed him out the window, she still couldn't quite help saying, "When have I ever not trusted you?"

Pen Lu Pen Lu’s brain raced a thousand thoughts a minute in a static sort of frazzled way that made it hard to focus. The banging on the door was getting louder and he knew it would only be a matter of time before the soldiers busted through, especially once the earthbenders got there. They didn’t have much time, yet, Pen Lu couldn’t bring himself to move just yet as the thoughts spiraled.
Then, Hayo moved toward him and spoke up, and Pen Lu’s mind calmed.
His shoulders relaxed as he looked directly at Hayo, meeting her eyes for a moment. ”Thanks,” he whispered to her. What would he do without Hayo? Even in times like this, she found a way to calm his nerves.
However, that sense of peace was short lived as the door busted open and soldiers pooled into the apartment. “There he is! The firebender!” One of the guards shouted, pointing directly at Pen Lu.
Pen Lu’s eyes widened. ”We’re out of time,” he realized and grabbed Hayo by the hand, taking a deep breath before jumping right out the window, pulling Hayo with him.
For a flew fleeting moments, cold air hit his face as the two of them quickly began plummeting to the ground. However, Pen Lu acted fast, earthbending the ground below them into a slide and his feet soon hit against the rock as he slid against it. ”Hang on!” He told Hayo and put his fists out, earthbending the pathways around them to steer their way toward the nearest wall within Ba Sing Se.
The soldiers were behind them, destroying what they could of his slide as they earthbended after them.
Pen Lu could only hope that they’d see him earthbending and realize they were chasing the wrong guy. But he knew better than that. He knew the truth.
He had firebended at the tea shop, and the soldiers had seen it. There was no escaping that.
Once his feet hit the ground and the slide was over, Pen Lu kept running, grabbing Hayo by the wrist to help guide her along the way. ”We need to get out of the city. I don’t think they’re going to stop until they have us,” he admitted, casting a nervous look back at her. ”We need an exit.”

.The only thing Hayo could do as she followed Pen Lu, hand grasping onto his tightly amidst the chaos they'd been thrown into, was think. There was only so far they could go on this current path, stuck inside the city, inside walls upon walls, until the guards managed to catch up to them. Hayo and Pen Lu were a total of one earthbender (and firebender? Hayo was still unsure how to classify that) compared to the many earthbenders on their trail. Truthfully, Hayo struggled to see a world where they escaped safely.
"Our only chance is going to be the monorail's route," she stated, looking upwards towards the nearest road they could see. There was only one route that led outside of the city, the few others only leading to the Outer Wall but not beyond. Perhaps it didn't matter since there would be guards littered through either route, bound to be suspicious of their actions.
Hayo looked back to Pen Lu. "Do you think you can continue to earthbend at this rate?" As they continued to run further, she tried to explain the only option she could still see ahead of them. "I don't think we can steal one of the monorails, but if you could use earthbending to use their route to push us forward, faster than the guards, we might have a chance?"
They could... run into the crowds afterwards, disappear, and evade capture. She didn't know if they had anything else to work off of.

Puddleheart Pen Lu took a breath, listening as Hayo went over their options. In his head, he could picture exactly what she meant and where she was talking about. They had both grown up in this city, they knew it like the back of their hands.
"I can keep going," Pen Lu decided stubbornly. Right now, his earthbending was the only thing keeping him and Hayo safe, and that meant he was going to earthbend until his limbs gave way underneath him and he passed out.
With that settled, Pen Lu took a breath and dug his heels into the ground. "Hold on," he told Hayo and pushed into the earth, sending them both back upwards and toward the nearest monorail.
The soldiers were hot on their tails, and one of them shot themself upward after them, ordering them to stop.
He got close enough to almost grab Hayo and Pen Lu acted in an instant.
He had meant to push the soldier away with a rock, however, instead, flames danced from his fingertips and a burst of fire shot out at the soldier, catching him entirely off guard as he fell back down, catching himself with the earth.
A rush of dread flooded over Pen Lu at the fire, however, he didn't have time to sit around and think about it, instead focusing on the monorail as they finally got close enough for him to launch him and Hayo forward and onto the track, quickly picking up speed and leaving the soldiers behind.
