Of the two, soul/sole is the closest pronunciation. I should know, because I'm Hispanic and the name is literally Latin/Spanish for Sun.

I always assumed that the writers named him after the word solstice or solar, and the sol in those words is pronounced like soul, so...

I’ve always known it as “soul” because that is how it is pronounced in Latin.

Is "sawl" like the same pronunciation as "sorl"??
I've just been pronouncing it the way it's written. Like "soll". Though it's probably "soul" because that's how the word sol is pronounced and sol means sun so I'm assuming that's what his name is

With how bamboozled I was when I learned I was saying Scourge wrong all these years, I wouldn't even be surprised if I was saying Sol wrong at this point.

Honestly, every time I see this sort of topic come up in general, I'm always reminded that not everyone will be familiar with what's pretty basic Spanish (basic for those just learning it, at least). I'm not even trying to be mean, either (and sorry if it comes across that way), I just find it genuinely funny. It's kinda like when Dovepaw thought everyone had super sensitive senses until she was told otherwise. I also live in a very Hispanic community, so that's probably why.
It was the same with TOH too, how I saw a few people being surprised that Luz's name meant light, and then there are the people who mispronounce her name by emphasizing the "z" at the end (even though the proper pronunciation is said in every episode).

And then the Spanish version of the books proceeds to completely punt this very basic issue by having him be called "Solo". Which would still result in the same pronunciation for the relevant part but wildly changes the name's meaning.

Yeah, and not even just Romance languages, but other branches of the Indo-European family as well. For example, Norwegian and Icelandic use Sol to mean Sun too, Sanskrit has Surya, etc... I think where another part of my confusion comes from is that we have words in English that are derived from Sol (solar being the most obvious example), but yeah, no, I totally get the lack of exposure thing.

Which would still result in the same pronunciation for the relevant part but wildly changes the name's meaning. Now that's just lazy. They couldn't have at least stuck with the celestial theme? They can't even keep the bizarre translation consistent, with Long Shadows making him Sólo with an accent mark for some reason before they revert to back to Solo. It's weird because like you said, it's obvious to any Spanish speaker what his name is referencing so it makes no sense. It almost comes off like the person doing the translating didn't have a written copy in front of them and misunderstood over the phone that his name was "Sole", but I can't comprehend how you would be translating and not have a written copy of the original in front of you at any point.

Ngl, I initially thought of Sol as "sawl" before switching to "soul".
You'd think I'd know better since I took Spanish in school, but nope! lol

When I've heard the name for the sun (Sol) spoken on tv or in movies, I've heard it as "sawl", so that's how I know it.

Warriors: Better Call Sol
In all seriousness I have only heard people pronounce it "Soul". Makes sense because it's a WORD irl. Solar system comes from sol.
