Just something I've been debating lately.
I understand why they killed him off, seeing as it was a fitting death in the end, and they didn't really NEED to continue his storyline. It was a bittersweet ending, sort of like Bristlefrost's. (Although hers was MUCH more tragic and unexpected.)
I feel like the story could've continued with him in it. Just as a background character. It would be heartwarming to see him getting to raise his kits and eventually telling stories as an elder. But like I said, it could really go either way.
So do you think it was necessary?

It obviously wasn't necessary, but it was a fitting end for him. It is sad he wasn't able to raise his kits, but it was a good ending.

Apparently, they originally planned to kill Gray Wing off as early as in The Sun Trail but then decided not to (that info can be found on his wiki page under the trivia section).
Personally, I think it was quite fitting for the arc to end with his death in Path of Stars. He was a very important cat in the Clans early history, without him being an official founder. Although I do agree it wasn't really necessary, it was effective for sure.

I've seen that on his wiki page before, and I'm really glad they did keep him around for the rest of the arc.

At first I thought Gray Wing was sort of old, and when I checked the wiki, it said he was only 2 and a half years old. That's way too young. He should've lived at least a bit longer to raise his kits. Although I guess to end DoTC it could've been a bit necessary? Idk

Idk I remember being honestly angry that he went through such a hard life only to not be able to actually raise his kits.

Was it necessary? No. Was it impactful, well-written, and the best death scene in the whole series? Yes.

Nothing is ever mechanically necessary in writing. There are many, many different ways to write a story, and so as an author you are rarely (if ever) forced to write it in one specific way. So in that sense, no, Gray Wing's death was not "necessary".
But in the sense of character arc and development, yes. The whole point of his death - what makes it raw and emotional and sad yet beautiful - is that it didn't have to happen. It wasn't inevitable. He struggled his whole life to find peace and happiness, and once achieved, he wasn't able to stick around and enjoy it. His death after all that is what leaves such a big impact with the reader and consider more deeply his character. It's the bittersweet Greek concept known as catharsis.
So yes, it was necessary.
