I don't know if this helps, but I decided to do that with the DOTC series - I was at the time waiting for all 6 books in the arc to drop before reading them. I get the first 5 books no problem, and then ask about book 6, where I was told there was something like 3 people ahead of me. I went home, looked online, it showed the book was ON THE SHELF at that library (it hadn't been before when I was there) so I turned around, went straight back to the library, got it off the shelf, and just checked it out no problem. I think each waitlist person gets 2 weeks, but I had it back in a matter of days.
Does your library have a site where you can see what books are in? That's the best place to start. Also, is your library networked with others in the area? (either within the same city, or if you're in a rural area, libraries of neighboring counties) If so, they might be able to borrow it from a different library to lend to you.

BEEFUR'S FOOLPROOF PLAN | UPDATE I I've updated the plan, here it is: Step one: Go to my library the day Wind gets published officially and have them put it on hold for me. (Plan b: if they say they can't hold it right away go to different neighboring libraries and ask them) Step 2: ask how long it will take to get it and how many people are in front of me Step 3: If it takes more than a month to get wait for it. Still open for suggestions! Does your library have an online service where you can check out ebooks like Libby or overdrive? If so, you can request the library to buy the next book to release like months ahead of its release date. This will also put you in the front of the line if you are the first person to request it. This is how I’ve been reading the books as soon as they release. I never had to wait in line for my turn.

You could check the starless clan archive on the Internet Archive. Last time I checked you could only borrow for 14 days w/ an account but likely there’ll be other ppl checking it out so you’ll prob have to reborrow every hour. You can check it out here: archive.org/details/asc-01-river/ASC04%20-%20Thunder/Also you’ll need an account to borrow but it’s email only (going from memory tho) so should be ok.
