PROLOGUE A Leafrise morning hung sweetly in the air. Flowers were blooming, birds were migrating back from the cold grip of Ice-chill, new life was appearing in the world, and the sun finally began to smile down on the forest. Within the forest, many animals such as bears and rattlesnakes made their homes. However, if one were to peek far enough into the forest, one would find that groups of cats were residing within different areas of this particular forest. Six main groups, to be exact. Some lived on one side of the spring while some cats even resided on a nearby mountain. Clans, they were called. In the beginning, these six Clans were nonexistent. Wild cats roamed the forest and mountains as they pleased, or some would form their own groups. On one fateful day, the three cats became friends and formed a group together. The three had unique talents; One was an excellent swimmer, one's sight was incredible, and the other had an amazing height for jumping. The three friends were known as Mist, Stone, and Deer. These cats changed the forest forever. As time trekked onward, many cats requested to join their group, but the friends denied it as they only wanted their group to consist of the three of them. One day, Stone had an idea. He explained to Deer and Mist that they should expand their horizons and explore. Stone suggested that they should all make their own Clans and teach the cats who wish to join their unique talents. After a lot of conversation, Deer and Mist agreed. The friends explored the forest and began to form their own Clans. Three Clans were established - DeerClan named after Deer, MistClan named after Mist, and SpringClan named after the spring water that goes through the territory. The Stars reached out to the friends and explained that they would guide and watch over the new Clans. All three gained the leader status and were then known as Stonestar, Deerstar, and Miststar. Quickly, their Clans began to have members. Around the same time, a Clan in the mountains was created. The Clan was named MidnightClan after their leader Midnight. MidnightClan grew to be fantastic climbers since they lived within the mountain region of the forest. MidnightClan prospered along with DeerClan, SpringClan, and MistClan until an earthquake happened in the mountains. Families of cats were pulled apart and many passed away. The remaining MidnightClan members hid away in a cave in the mountains for a few moons. During this time, another Clan emerged. Cats who had evil intentions formed another new Clan known as VenomClan, named after their leader Venom. Venom had many plans for his Clan, even going as far as to recruit members to manipulate them into thinking VenomClan had no cruel intent. Venom was a strong fighter and made it his goal for members of his new Clan to become strong fighters like himself. VenomClan was an enemy to all Clans. Many moons passed, and the original three friends passed on. Although the three joined The Stars, their Clans continued to grow. MidnightClan decided to reform with their new leader, Falconswoop, whom Midnight himself chose. Midnight came to Falconswoop in a dream and prompted the tom to rebuild their Clan. Falconswoop agreed and was nominated as Falconstar through Midnight. Falconstar rebuilt the lost Clan and renamed it AlpineClan. The Clans were rapidly growing as cats brought new life and Outsiders began to join. The sixth Clan of the forest rose within this timeframe. Rabbit was born into VenomClan because of his VenomClan father who fell in love with his SpringClan mother when his father was a spy. Rabbit's father lied to his mother about VenomClan, leading to Rabbit being brought into the vicious Clan by his father. His father died shortly after Rabbit's entry into the Clan. Rabbit hated VenomClan and its ways, and so he fled. The spiteful Clan hunted him down, but Rabbit was too fast. Rabbit hid within other groups of cats for a while until he felt he did not fit in. He decided to create his own Clan named RabbitClan after himself. RabbitClan had a slow start, but eventually gained many members. Rabbit gained status as a leader and was then nominated as Rabbitstar by a member of The Stars. Rabbitstar had a unique talent of being able to run fast, and so he would teach his new Clanmates how to do exactly that. RabbitClan was the final Clan to be created. Present day, the Clans continue to live their lives. A DeerClan healer by the name of Doveblossom stirred from her slumber with wide eyes. The light grey tabby cannot seem to shake herself from the dream that occurred during the night. Rising to her paws, the molly's pale sapphire gaze rested on a fluffy ball of white that was sleeping soundly. Doveblossom's new apprentice, Icypaw, hadn't risen yet. She momentarily observed the young feline before rushing out of the den. "Ashstar, Ravenhaze, I must speak with you. It's urgent." The molly announced as she stood at the entrance of their den. The two cats quickly woke up, allowing the healer to enter. She exhaled shakily, her ears pinned. "I… I think The Stars have given me an augury," She began, watching her leader and deputy's expressions change. "Snowberry walked into my dream. He told me that the storm will save all of the Clans. I'm unsure of what that means…" Her tail lowered, the tip meeting the ground. "In my augury, Snowberry showed me shadows of cats in danger. But, a tall cat came to rescue them." After a second of silence, Ashstar was the first to speak. "Perhaps The Stars are saying a battle is coming." His dark brown stare flicked to meet Doveblossom's. "But, that doesn't make sense. No Clan is having tensions that we know of. And we are okay with all of the Clans, aside VenomClan." The leader thought aloud, tilting his head slightly. His dark grey ears twitched in thought. The deputy piped up, "Maybe VenomClan is planning an attack." The tom's black and white tail lashed with anxiety. "VenomClan has been trying to overtake the forest for as long as I can remember. It would make sense…" Ravenhaze trailed off, his fur standing up on his body slightly. Ashstar dipped his head in silent agreement while Doveblossom paced around the den. Doveblossom halted in her tracks. "You both could be right. I am just hoping soon we can find out exactly what Snowberry meant. Thank you for meeting with me." She nodded to her superiors, and as they nodded back she slunk out of their den. Although she spoke to them, she still felt on edge. What could this augury possibly mean?

CHAPTER ONE “Ivypaw, time to get up! We’ve got some things to do today!” A soft exhale passed through a young molly’s nose. “Alright…” She softly replied to her new mentor’s call, emerging from the moss she was resting on drowsily. A yawn was followed as she stretched. She shook her raven-colored pelt before exiting the apprentice den. It was only then that Ivypaw realized she was the last to awaken. Her light green eyes met her brown tortoiseshell mentor who was patiently awaiting outside of the den. The leafrise morning light shined brightly upon the DeerClan camp with birds singing their songs loudly within the forest. The lukewarm air hugged the apprentice like a tightly wrapped vine. The scent of fresh prey and herbs filled Ivypaw’s nose, to which she concluded that cats had just returned from hunting and gathering. It seemed every cat was in high spirits, especially her mentor. Cedartalon purred, “Good morning my new apprentice.” Her tail waved back and forth behind her as she stared at Ivypaw. “Today I want to take you to our borders and explore the territory. You will have to know every inch of our territory if you are to be a successful warrior after all.” Ivypaw dipped her head in response, still looking slightly sluggish. “You will wake up more once we gather the other new apprentices together,” Cedartalon said, which made Ivypaw perk up a little, “Come on, let’s go meet up with them.” Ivypaw followed her with some excitement sparking her demeanor. She knew she could socialize with some of her peers since she usually spent time with her sister Icypaw. A group of cats stood at the camp’s entrance, chatting amongst themselves. Ivypaw recognized that it was Amberglow, Solarpaw, Crimsonhowl, and Maplepaw awaiting her and Cedartalon’s appearance. “Hey, Maplepaw and Solarpaw!” The young feline purred a greeting to her fellow apprentices, in which they greeted her in response. She caught up to the two while her mentor spoke with Amberglow and Crimsonhowl. “Are you both excited to explore our territory?” “Yeah! I have only seen parts of it from the nursery as a kitten and our den, so I’m ready to see what it has to offer.” Maplepaw piped up, her amber optics sparkling with curiosity. Her tan-colored tail swished back and forth as she continued, “I’m curious if we will visit the Roaring Path.” Ivypaw knew how dangerous the Roaring Path could be from the stories the seniors would when she was a kitten. Aside from the path itself, there were large Roar-ers that moved down the path and some Walking Stick dens that bordered the edge of DeerClan’s territory. She grew a little nervous at the thought of being near the intimidating path until she was quickly drawn out of her thoughts. The yellowish-orange tom feebly spoke up, “I hope not…” His ears pinned slightly on his head; Ivypaw didn’t blame his uneasiness. Solarpaw was already a relatively shy and quiet cat, so it didn’t surprise her that he wasn’t thrilled at the idea of visiting the Roaring Path. At that moment, the young felines’ mentors called the trio over to get ready for their tour of the territory. Their mentors quickly explained that they would be exploring all of the territory despite Solarpaw’s hope. Ivypaw watched his blue orbs glisten with apprehension and she lightly touched her tail to his back. To which, he dipped his head to her in response to her comfort. Exiting the DeerClan camp felt like an accomplishment to Ivypaw. Finally, she was able to have full knowledge of her Clan’s territory like a true warrior. As the group of mentors escorted the apprentices through the territory, Ivypaw caught up to Cedartalon. She wanted to get to know her better, and she assumed this would be the perfect opportunity. “Cedartalon, how long have you been a warrior?” The sable-furred molly inquired with a slight tilt of her head. Her tail held high and twitched marginally, her whiskers perked forward. An amused purr erupted from the brown multi-colored feline, “Well, I’m twenty-six moons old, so for a little while.” Ivypaw nodded her head in response. “You probably can’t wait to be a warrior, huh? It is a great duty and role to have within the Clan. You should know that you are a brave young cat for wanting a big responsibility like this.” Cedartalon lightly touched her tail to her beaming apprentice’s back as the duo walked side by side. She continued, “Being a warrior is not easy. But it is an important duty. That is why we have to show you the entirety of DeerClan so we can help you and the other apprentices with your fighting skills. After all, you are DeerClan-born, and knowing how to jump from branch to branch or even on the ground whilst fighting is crucial.” The apprentice nodded her head. DeerClan-born cats such as herself had a natural ability to jump high, but learning to control it and use that skill was another story. Her thoughts were interrupted when the sound of angry water attacking the innocent rocks was heard close by. This is our half of the spring Mother had always talked about. She thought, quickly recognizing the small stream of water that the group was near. It was Crimsonhowl who announced that they were now at The Spring which divided DeerClan and SpringClan’s territories. “This is The Spring. We and SpringClan share this stream so that we can drink from it and they can fish or swim in it.” The reddish-brown molly spoke, her bobbed tail twitching a little. The Spring had a lot of greenery to offer that embraced the rushing water that separated the two Clans. Ivypaw even spotted a tiny frog hopping from one stone to the next. The strong scent of the dirt underneath their paws stealthy snuck into the adolescent feline’s nose unexpectedly. Her gaze snapped to meet the clear blue water when an abrupt splash was heard. She heard her mentor laugh, “Don’t worry Ivypaw. It was just a fish coming up for air.” Her peers also seemed caught off guard by the sudden sound, which eased her. Ivypaw’s gaze traveled back to the water, where she stepped closer to it. Her reflection stared back at her but was distracted when the other apprentices made their way over. “Are you going to jump in, Ivypaw?” Maplepaw playfully questioned. “No, that looks way too cold. And I’d have to be a SpringClan cat even to want to jump in.” Solarpaw took his place next to Ivypaw nervously. Embarrassed, he lapped at his chest before speaking, “SpringClan cats are crazy… What…What kind of cat would want to get in the water, anyway?” His tail encased his paws as he sat next to the water, looking into his rippling parallel. Maplepaw laughed as she stood beside Ivypaw. “I don’t know. Maybe there is a reason for how they can stand getting their pelts drenched. Perhaps they are like fish and can breathe underwater, too?” The beige and white molly almost seemed serious about her question before she chuckled once again. “That would be strange if they could. I don’t think I could be a SpringClan warrior. I’m more than okay being a DeerClan-born cat.” After the apprentices were allowed to explore The Spring for a while, the group moved on. The rest of the forest was how Ivypaw imagined it would be from the stories she heard as a kitten. Now, they were approaching a hill to a winding dark grey path. From the distant sound of rumbling like thunder to the breeze whipping the grass each time the loud growl was heard, the apprentice knew what was ahead. The Roaring Path had a few Roar-ers going by already. The mentors had no trace of fear on their faces as they led their apprentices to one of the scariest paths known to Clan cats. Reaching the top, Amberglow announced, “Now, you young cats need to listen to me carefully…” She watched Ivypaw, Maplepaw, and Solarpaw come into view before continuing her warning. Crimsonhowl and Cedartalon stood next to her and patiently waited for her to speak again. “This is the Roaring Path. I am sure you have heard stories of this path as a kitten, such as when we had to flee to the other side to make a camp for a while. The purpose of us showing you this path is in case we have another terrible storm, as we did all those seasons ago, where our second camp is. Be aware that we have to pass through Walking Stick dens to get there.” Ivypaw’s tail swished with excitement. She had wanted to see this dangerous path ever since she could remember. Now was her chance.

CHAPTER TWO Turning around, Amberglow led the young felines to the path’s edge. “Follow your mentors and me closely, and don’t run until any of us say the word. We don’t want to send you to the healer’s den if we can avoid it when we return.” The light brown tabby’s tail beckoned the apprentices to come closer while their mentors brought up the rear. “If you should ever cross here when you are a warrior - first, press your ear down to the path.” Amberglow bent down and lightly pressed her ear down on the path. The apprentices watched with wide, curious eyes. “And if you don’t hear anything, look both directions first.” The older molly’s head swung from side to side a few times, “Once you know there are no Roar-ers, it is clear to go… So, run now!” Amberglow bolted onto the Roaring Path and the other felines followed, Ivypaw tailing Cedartalon. Once all the cats were across, they all exhaled a sigh of relief. Ivypaw’s paws tingled with enthusiasm. I can’t believe we just crossed The Roaring Path! She practically glowed like the sun with energy. Her ear flicked as she heard her mentor stroll up beside her. “You look as happy as a RabbitClan cat running to chase her prey.” Cedartalon laid her tail delicately on her apprentice’s back, “If that is exciting to you, wait until we reach our secondary camp.” Ivypaw purred at Cedartalon, her light jade eyes glittering with wonder. I can’t wait to see our second camp! Maybe the Roaring Path will stretch out more… Her thoughts were interrupted when she noticed her Clanmates already snaking their way through the grass and she ran up to join the other apprentices. Amberglow was right - there were many Walking Stick dens that loomed above them like birds stalking their prey. “Be careful. We don’t want to alert any Walking Sticks as we pass. They will try to capture you if they can.” Ivypaw shivered at the thought. She knew den cats lived within the Walking Stick dens. I could never be a den cat… I’m too loyal to my Clan! Her pelt spiked slightly along her spine, but before she could give more thought to it, she heard Amberglow purr; “Keep your fur on, Ivypaw. Most of the time, they are in their dens.” Maplepaw gave a soft snort of laughter while her mentor Crimsonhowl’s bobbed tail twitched with hysterical amusement. Cedartalon gave Ivypaw a friendly look, gingerly nudging her further on the path. It wasn’t much longer before the group of cats was met with a camp similar to DeerClan’s except bigger; the camp had various dens and a lot more space to move around. “This is it.” Crimsonhowl softly spoke, padding to the middle of the camp. “The storm all those seasons ago was so dangerous that some of the other Clans had to live with us. SpringClan and MistClan resided here with us… I remember it like it was yesterday.” Cedartalon joined Crimsonhowl’s side and lightly touched her nose to the reddish-brown molly’s cheek as a sign of comfort. Ivypaw remembered the story the senior Skyburr had told her as a kitten; Crimsonhowl had been new to the Clan at that time and was a scared apprentice when the storm happened. Crimsonhowl had nearly drowned on the journey because of the high and rushing waters until a SpringClan cat, Mothblaze, saved her. She guessed Cedartalon also went through it since her mentor’s eyes were flitting across the camp. Ivypaw noticed Maplepaw strolling up to her mentor with a sympathetic look, along with Solarpaw. Amberglow caught up to them, “Yes. It wasn’t so long ago that we all had to live here for a little while. But, we don’t have to worry about it for now.” Her gaze swung up to meet the morning sky that was slowly changing into day. Her eyes swiftly landed on the other mentors, “Let’s show our apprentices around the camp.” Cedartalon scurried to Ivypaw, her tail motioning her apprentice to follow. Ivypaw walked alongside her mentor, her tail swishing happily behind her. “Okay, Ivypaw. I’ll show you some of the dens first. Most were some of the other Clan’s dens, but it is always good to know.” Her mentor padded up to a large den that had nothing inside of it.“This was the leader’s den. Can you believe three leaders slept in here?” Cedartalon looked to her apprentice with an entertained twitch of her whiskers. Ivypaw imagined Ashstar, Gingerstar, and Stormstar curled up beside each other sleeping soundly. Her imagination dissipated when Cedartalon told her to come and see another den. The duo found themselves at another large den with wilted herbs abandoned on one side, their stench touching Ivypaw’s nose. “You probably already figured out that this was the healer’s den. I had never seen Doveblossom, let alone the other healers, so stressed. I was only an apprentice, but I could tell that the three of them were worried constantly, and the storm didn’t help.” An abrupt twinge of worry sparked in Ivypaw’s belly for her sister, Icypaw, who was in training to become a healer. Would she have to go through something like that? Surely not. Ice-chill was a long way away, and there were no signs of an incoming storm. She pushed the thoughts down and paid attention to the rest of her tour of the secondary camp. Once their visit was finished, all the cats gathered back up to the center of the camp. Amberglow held her head high as she spoke, “We can head back to the forest for now. I’m sure you apprentices will be complaining about your sore paw pads tomorrow.” Ivypaw raised her paw and felt nothing of the sort. I could explore all day! Maybe Amberglow is just getting old. She thought with a twitch of her whiskers. She assumed Cedartalon shared her thoughts by the amused twinkle in her mentor’s eyes as Ivypaw inspected the pad of her paw. “Follow us,” Amberglow announced, taking charge of the group again. Ivypaw rose to her paws and padded alongside her fellow apprentices. As they exited the camp, Maplepaw piped up, “Do you think any Walking Sticks are going to try to catch us?” Ivypaw shook her head, “No, we are too fast for them anyway. They are used to catching those den cats.” She noticed the intrigued expression on Solarpaw’s face and continued, puffing out her chest. “They would be squirrel-brained to even try! Clan cats like us are too smart.” Solarpaw gave a quiet snort of laughter which caused Ivypaw to purr. Maplepaw nodded her head in agreement with an entertained blink. It feels nice knowing these cats could be lifelong friends of mine. The crow-furred molly silently added to herself with her tail held high and waving happily behind her. It wasn’t long before the cluster of felines stumbled upon the Walking Stick dens again. Amberglow had warned the apprentices again before weaving their way further into the Walking Sticks’ territory. As the patrol made their way to the edge, the noisy voice of a Walking Stick forced their pelts to bristle like a hedgehog’s quills. “Everyone! Hide, quickly!” Amberglow instructed with a hiss, directing the cats to a nearby shrub. Ivypaw, with her tail bushed as large as the shrub, dove behind the plant with her Clanmates following. Crimsonhowl’s throat rumbled with a low growl in an attempt to scare off the Walking Stick; Cedartalon’s unusually long claws unsheathed with her eyes narrowed. The Walking Stick must have seen the group scurry past since it began to approach. Amberglow began to speak in a hushed tone, “We need a plan-” Ivypaw’s idea tumbled from her before she could stop herself, “I can distract the Walking Stick away! That way, you all can escape before it catches you!” Her Clanmates stared back at her with stretched eyes and their ears flattening against their heads. Cedartalon, through a hiss, disapprovingly replied, “Absolutely not! You are much too young! Someone like myself should be the one to distract them.” Crimsonhowl agreed silently with Ivypaw’s mentor, nodding her head. But the Walking Sticks are fast, and I am faster than you! Ivyaw almost voiced her thoughts but decided against it. Cedartalon straightened herself up, however, her claws never retracted. “You all stay here. I will go and distract that fox-hearted Walking Stick. Call out to me, and then I will scratch up the Walking Stick and come back!” Ivypaw’s paws trembled with worry. There’s no way I’m letting her go out there! Before any cat could agree and talk about Cedartalon’s plan, Ivypaw darted from the shelter of the shrub. She heard Cedartalon yowl, “No, Ivypaw! Get back here!” Dismissing her mentor’s warning, the apprentice hurried into the Walking Stick’s territory. Faintly, Ivypaw could hear the distressed hissing of her Clanmates that urged her to return. As she disregarded their anxious calls, the Walking Stick approached her with a soft tone. Ivypaw blinked at the Walking Stick curiously. What in the name of The Stars do I do now? She meowed at the Walking Stick, to which it drew closer and scooped her up. A frightened yowl came from her, instantly regretting disobeying her Clanmates. “I’ve been captured!” She called out to anyone who could hear her plea for help as she was briskly taken inside of the Walking Stick’s den. This isn’t how it was supposed to go at all! Ivypaw frantically thought as the Walking Stick went further inside the den. Oh great Stars, help!

CHAPTER THREE The fur on Ivypaw’s spine lifted as her ears flattened to her head. The Walking Stick had placed her on soft moss-covered ground. Her gaze swung around in a panicked manner, her light emerald orbs brimming with fear. Her tail twitched to and fro with a low growl rumbling from her chest. The Walking Stick was digging around for something Ivypaw didn’t quite catch onto. I hope my Clanmates can get away… I’m going to be in so much trouble when I get back home! She forced her bristled pelt to lay flat as she thought about DeerClan. I have to stay calm. It is what would be sensible in this moment… Even though I’m scared out of my fur! Ivypaw’s jaws parted slightly to breathe in the smells that twined together like tangled vines around her. Wait… Is that another cat? That’s it! Maybe this other cat can help break me out! If it is another cat, anyway. Her tail whisked back and forth as she padded cautiously along the moss-covered ground. Scanning the area, she spotted a brown and white tabby molly with a light red collar around her neck lying behind a huge, soft structure. “Hello,” the den cat purred, “I thought I saw my Walking Stick carry another cat in.” The den cat had white paws, dark sapphire eyes, and a swollen belly. Ivypaw drew to the conclusion that she was expecting kittens any time now. The apprentice drew a bit closer; the den cat twitched her short whiskers in joviality. “Don’t be shy, now. I am Fiona. It is a pleasure to meet you. What is your name?” Fiona tilted her head curiously, watching as the young feline carefully came closer. Fiona is a strange name… Ivypaw thought to herself. Ivypaw puffed her chest out slightly. “I am Ivypaw. Nice to meet you, too. So you are a den cat.” She gave a questioning expression to Fiona, “Does it ever bore you living here? I am in a Clan… I am not sure if you know of the Clans, but I am an apprentice of DeerClan!” The ebony-colored molly proudly sat in front of Fiona, her tail wrapping around her paws. Her ears were high on her head, her eyes twinkled with interest. A purr erupted from Fiona as the pregnant molly rose to her paws to stand in front of Ivypaw. Fiona found her place in front of Ivypaw, flopping down to lay on her side. She lifted her head to meet Ivypaw’s inquisitive gaze. “I have heard of the Clans before. Many stories, in fact. I enjoy the peace and comfort here. By the way you were acting when my Walking Stick brought you in, I could tell you are a Clan cat. Most cats my Walking Stick picks up are either completely wild cats or Clan cats.” Fiona sighed, “I suppose you want to return to your Clan. You are sure you don’t want to-” The molly was interrupted by the sound of the Walking Stick coming. Ivypaw whipped around to see it walking toward her with a red piece of fur in its paws. Fiona quickly meowed, “Don’t be scared, it’s okay.” Ivypaw couldn’t help her initial reaction. Her heart was drumming against her chest like a wild horse running in an open field. Her optics were wide, the scent of her fear filling her senses. The Walking Stick tied the red fur around the apprentice’s neck and backed away with a soft tone of voice. Ivypaw flexed her claws in and out nervously and gazed down at the red fur dangling from her neck. “What is this thing? I cannot return to my Clan with this thing around me! Fiona, can you help me get this red fur off?” Wildly, she attempted to tear free of the red fur, but to her disappointment, it remained around her neck. Fiona shook her head. “I apologize, Ivypaw… But, I don’t know how to get it off of you. That is called a bandana. My Walking Stick must have run out of collars from all of the other cats he has tried to keep here.” The den cat gave the apprentice a sympathetic glance before rising to her paws. “I do know how to get you out of here, though.” Ivypaw brightened immediately at that, her tail tip twitching. “Follow me.” Fiona signaled with a flick of her tail for Ivypaw to follow. The brown and white tabby showed Ivypaw to the entrance of the den. “My Walking Stick lets me out if I meow for it. Follow my lead.” With a nod of her head, the young feline obeyed. I hope this is going to work… Ivypaw thought as Fiona began to meow loudly at the entrance. Restlessly, the apprentice shifted her paws as the Walking Stick proceeded toward the two cats. Fiona’s purr almost comforted Ivypaw. The Walking Stick opened the entrance with a paw and the light from the day poured in. The scent of fresh grass and flowers weaved its way into her nose, her tail swishing happily as the familiarity of it engulfed her. The two mollies speedily slipped out of the crack and were met with the outside world. We did it! I can go back to DeerClan!Unexpectedly, a thought struck Ivypaw like she had been clawed by an enemy. What if they don’t want me back because I disobeyed? Her pelt became as sharp as thorns. Shaking her head, she shoved the idea to the back of her mind and her fur went back to its regular state. I cannot be thinking like that… Surely, they want me back. I will have to earn their trust back. Ivypaw turned to Fiona, “Thank you for getting me out of there! You know, you are very smart. It is a shame you aren’t with me back in DeerClan. Maybe you can come back with me?” Fiona purred before shaking her head. “I am sorry but I am about to have my kittens… I do not think Clan life would suit me the way it does you. Perhaps…” An idea seemed to pass through Fiona’s head. “I will ask a favor of you.” She finally declared, meeting Ivypaw’s gaze. “Since I lead you out of my den, you owe me.” The tabby’s eyes sparked as she went on, “I want my kittens to try the life of a Clan. I want them to be able to choose their own path in life. If they enjoy Clan life, they will remain there. If they do not, they must return to me. In two moons, you must meet me here. If you do not, I will keep them for myself.” Fiona’s tail waved around behind her as she finished her request. Ivypaw enlivened. Had her determination inspired the den cat? “Okay. In two moons, I will come back here and show your kittens the way of Clan life.” She couldn’t help the excitement dripping from her voice, and it was clear Fiona was thrilled with her answer. “Thank you for your help, Fiona. I will see you in two moons.” With that, Ivypaw dipped her head politely before turning around to face the dangers of being alone in the forest. After managing to cross the Roaring Path by herself, Ivypaw noticed the sun’s rays dimming in the sky. The day was quickly changing into evening, and she knew she had to get a move on. I wonder if anyone is looking for me… Surely Ashstar sent some patrollers to track me. Maybe Mother is searching for me now. The young apprentice picked up her pace, opening her jaws to allow scents to flow through. Unfamiliar smells hit her and she frowned. I haven’t been taught how to identify the other Clan’s scents yet… Trying to track them won’t help. Discouraged, Ivypaw let out a yowl in hopes any of her Clanmates could hear her. Her paws grew tired and her stomach grumbled at her for not being able to eat yet. I am getting closer to someone, right? A lot of the DeerClan forest looks the same… The young molly thought, her eyes taking in all of the familiar sights. “Ivypaw! Are you out here?” Ivypaw’s ears angled in the direction of the voice calling out her name. Cedartalon! She recognized the voice instantly. Bolting toward the sound, Ivypaw felt a rush of happiness. Thank you, Stars, for helping me find my way home!“I’m here!” Ivypaw yowled so loud she thought all the Clans would come out searching for her deafening voice. She heard a few cats rejoicing at her response. Finally, she could see pelts she recognized - Cedartalon, Frostpetal, Firestep, and Onyxwing. Mother and Father were sent to look for me! The apprentice reached the patrol, huffing for air. Her parents gathered around her, pressing against her with relief. Frostpetal was the first to speak. “Ivypaw, we are glad you are safe. Icypaw has not stopped pacing around the healer’s den since she heard your missing report!” Ivypaw nodded; she was grateful to have such loving kin. “Let us bring you back to camp. You need to be checked over by your sister and Doveblossom.” It wasn’t until her mother pulled away that Frostpetal realized the red fur around her daughter’s neck. “What is that strange thing you have on? That isn’t like a usual den cat’s collar…” Ivypaw shook her head. “The den cat who helped me escape, Fiona, told me it is similar to a collar; it is a bandana. I cannot get it off… I suppose I will just keep it on until there is a way to untangle myself from it.” The whole patrol was giving her intrigued stares by now. Frostpetal dipped her head and then led the group back to DeerClan. Ivypaw couldn’t help but notice how conflicted Cedartalon looked, but Onyxwing caught up to her before Ivypaw could get the chance to catch up to her mentor. Her father gazed down at her with worried eyes. “You cannot disobey your mentor again like that. It is dangerous to do so.” When Ivypaw opened her jaws to interrupt, Onyxwing instead tacked on, “I am not trying to scold you. I just want you to become the best warrior you can be. Since you were a kitten you have said you wanted to follow in my pawsteps and become a warrior of DeerClan. Taking risks like that is not the answer.” The soot-colored tom laid his tail on his daughter’s shoulder with care. “I want you to do as your mentor tells you from now on, even if you think you have a better idea. Okay?” Ivypaw nodded, her tail and head drooping in despair. Once inside the camp, night had finally fallen. Ivypaw could hear crickets talking to each other softly outside of the healer’s den. The sky had now been dotted with the ancestors of DeerClan and the moon was partly showing as if it were too shy to show its full beauty. The crow-colorerd sky had no clouds in sight, as far as Ivypaw could tell. Here and there, she picked up traces of her Clanmates eating prey but no smell was too significant. Doveblossom sniffed Ivypaw for any injuries or oddities before announcing, “You seem to be fine, Ivypaw.” The older healer nodded, to which the apprentice rose to her paws. “I was worried about you.” Icypaw pressed her cheek to her sister’s. “I am relieved to see that you are okay.” Ivypaw rubbed her cheek a little into Icypaw’s. Icypaw pulled away after a moment, “We have to go. I am going to the Sapphire Pool for the first time!” Ivypaw recalled Icypaw talking about how when the moon was at half, healers from each Clan would meet at the sacred Sapphire Pool to share with The Stars. She knew this was a big deal for her sister since Icypaw would be presented as an apprentice at the Sapphire Pool. Ivypaw gave a dip of her head, “I’d better leave then. You will do great.” She purred to her sister, and Icypaw returned the affectionate sound. Heading out of the den, Ivypaw sighed. At least she isn’t going to get a scolding from her mentor. Cedartalon had hardly spoken to her besides expressing that she was glad Ivypaw was okay and that they would talk in the morning. It was a conversation that Ivypaw dreaded. Dragging her paws, she started toward the apprentice's den. I am just going to take my punishment now and not eat with the Clan.Miserably, Ivypaw flopped in her nest, finding herself completely alone in the apprentice's den. The young apprentice made herself comfortable as she could and awaited with a somber exhale for the next day to arrive.

CHAPTER FOUR Despite her efforts, Ivypaw was unable to fall asleep. Her mind swam with thoughts of how she would be punished for disobeying her mentor and getting captured by a Walking Stick. She was certain Cedartalon was already in Ashstar and Ravenhaze's den reporting what had happened. A thought slapped her in the face. What if Cedartalon is punished for my actions? A soft whine escaped the young feline. I'm going to be known as the foolish flea-brained apprentice who got her mentor into trouble with the leader! As Ivypaw buried her nose in her paws, she felt defeated. I should go for a walk... Perhaps it will clear my head so I can rest. Ivypaw thought, her eyes flitting over to the den entrance. As she stepped out of the den, almost all of her Clanmates were eating together except for the ones who were night hunting. She slipped over to the camp's entrance while no one was looking. It looked like, to her, no cat was on guard, since most of the Clan were eating. In one final glance over her shoulder, she darted out of the camp. Ivypaw reminded herself that she could get into trouble for leaving unsupervised. I'll make it quick... I need a drink anyway. Maybe no one will notice. After walking a short distance, she reached The Spring. The moonlight made The Spring look just as beautiful as it did in daylight; the water was shimmering with delight at the moon giving it attention. Lapping at the rippling water almost soothed her. Much better. She thought, whisking her tail. Sighing, Ivypaw sat down beside the water with her tail curling around her paws. This is relaxing, I have to admit. The tranquility of The Spring was disturbed by the sound of rocks on the opposite side shifting around. Ivypaw jumped up to her paws, fear clawing her in the heart. Oh no, now I am going to get in trouble with a SpringClan warrior! Could this night get any worse? She frantically thought before making an attempt to conceal herself behind a rock. She silently thanked her ancestors for her crow-colored pelt as she waited for the SpringClan warrior to emerge from the opposite side. The SpringClan cat was a male; he had orange tabby fur and blue, tenderhearted eyes. He looked smaller than Ivypaw, which made the tension in her chest loosen some. The tom swung his head back and forth, in search of any other cats before taking a drink out of the refreshing water. Ivypaw slowly crept out, wondering if he could scent her. Maybe this tom does not know how to scent other Clans yet, like me... But he seems a little younger than me as if he were made an apprentice just today. Well, I can't be too judgemental... I just became an apprentice yesterday! She cleared her throat to make herself known and the younger apprentice was startled. "Uh- Who's there?! Are you on SpringClan territory..?" It took everything in Ivypaw not to purr with laughter. "No," She stepped closer to The Spring again, "I am on DeerClan territory, thank you very much!" She noticed that the SpringClan apprentice had shorter legs than her - most cats did - and had a different build to him. He was skinny and had slicker fur than most felines she knew; she assumed it was so he could swim faster. "What is your name? I am Ivypaw." She introduced herself politely, giving a small nod of her head to the flame-colored tabby. "I'm Emberpaw. It's nice to meet you, Ivypaw!" Emberpaw found a spot at the edge of his side of The Spring and snaked his tail across his paws as he sat up in an attempt to make himself look taller. Even though he is from another Clan, I do have to admit that he is kinda cute! Ivypaw added to herself without even thinking. Wait- I can't be thinking about that... Her thoughts were disrupted by Emberpaw's questioning expression. "What are you doing here so late?" "Oh, I just... Stopped by to get a drink. How about you?" "I stopped here for the same thing! I guess we both snuck out of camp, huh?" "Seems to be that way." Emberpaw's throat rumbled with a purr, his whiskers twitching. "I bet it was no problem for you since you have a dark pelt." Ivypaw gave her chest fur a few embarrassed licks at his words before looking back up at him, eyes twinkling. Emberpaw must have a hard time blending in with his surroundings with his bright fur. "Hey, what is that around your neck? You aren't a former den cat, are you?" Emberpaw tilted his head curiously at the DeerClan molly. Ivypaw shook her head, "I was captured today by a Walking Stick. They stuck this around my neck and I can't get free of it. I guess it will get off of me within time." She shook her pelt a little as if to show the SpringClan tom that the red pelt couldn't be freed. His orbs widened with amazement. "How come you are so short?" Without thinking, the question tumbled from Ivypaw's mouth. It caused her ears to flatten out of embarrassment. Emberpaw didn't seem to mind. His purring from earlier continued, "That's a hard question to answer when you are as tall as a tree! They should have called you Tallpaw!" Ivypaw's whiskers moved in amusement; she had gotten her height from her father, and he from his mother, and so forth. "My mother was kind of short from what I remember... Most SpringClan cats are smaller, anyway." Emberpaw continued, the purr in his throat wilting away like a dead flower. The word that caught Ivypaw's attention was the word 'was.' Had something happened to Emberpaw's mother? She wasn't sure if she was in the position to ask, but inquired anyway. "Was? What... What happened?" The molly tipped her head curiously. Why is it so fun to be talking with this tom? Maybe it is because he doesn't know the full extent of my dumb decisions today...At Ivypaw's request, Emberpaw drew a breath in. "My parents were unfortunately killed by poisonous water snakes when I was a kitten. They went for a swim and accidentally tangled with a few of them." The DeerClan apprentice's jaw almost dropped. She didn't even know there was such a thing as water snakes. She imagined a rattlesnake slithering along the water with malice in its dark, beady eyes. She winced at the image; Ivypaw couldn't imagine losing Onyxwing or Frostpetal that young. "It's okay. They are in The Stars now, swimming in the streams. Heatherdrop adopted me when they passed, and she is like a mother to me." It seemed as if Emberpaw matured in that moment before he reverted to his cheery self, "Enough about that. I need to leave before my mentor, Mockingstrike, notices!" Rising to her paws, Ivypaw nodded. "I need to get going as well... I'm sure we will see each other at the Rendezvous soon." Her ivy-colored eyes that she was named after glittered with excitement, and she felt Emberpaw return her enthusiasm. "It was nice to meet you. We will meet again in no time." She dipped her head to the SpringClan apprentice, which he nodded back. She meowed a quick goodbye and turned her back on her new friend across The Spring. See you soon, Emberpaw. The next morning was the day Ivypaw didn't want to rouse from her peaceful dreams. The sunlight streamed into the apprentice den, making itself known that it was dawn. With pricked ears, Ivypaw could hear baby mockingbirds whining for their mothers to feed them. The faint scent of the dawn hunting patrol's catch touched her nose lightly. Blowing out a breath of air, the dark-furred molly got to her paws. Today's the day I face punishment from Cedartalon. I may as well get it over with. At least it is a beautiful Leafrise morning. That counts for something. Her gaze swung over to a sleeping Solarpaw. She couldn't help the snort of laughter that came from her nose. Gently, she poked Solarpaw with a paw and whispered, "Hey, Solarpaw, you may want to get up!" She watched as the honey-colored tom began to awaken, sleepily blinking. "Amberglow will probably want you out here." Ivypaw took a step back and watched as Solarpaw yawned and stretched. The tom swung his vivid sky-colored gaze to meet her green one. "Thanks for waking me up," he shyly mewed, "I... I probably would have been stuck doing the senior's ticks for moons." A faint trace of a purr softly rattled in Solarpaw's chest. Ivypaw beamed at him; it was at that moment that she felt the urge to reassure him that he didn't have to be so shy around her. After all, she'd known him a little before they became apprentices. She was brought to a memory of when Raintrill and Furzetweet had brought the scrawny tom back to camp after finding him lost without parents or a Clan by the DeerClan border. He was the same age - both three moons at the time - and was checked over frequently by Doveblossom because of his weight. Solarpaw had always been timid, and Ivypaw felt he was especially sheepish towards her for some reason. Ivypaw drifted out of the memory and floated back to reality. "Solarpaw, I hope you know that you can be comfortable with me. No need to be shy. After all, we are both going to be training together quite a bit." Solarpaw's expression shifted from a bashful one and morphed into a beaming one. The moment was interrupted by Ivypaw, "I'd better get going. I am sure I am getting in trouble for yesterday..." She puffed in annoyance. "I'm not so sure about that... Yesterday, Cedartalon seemed... Well, she... She seemed sad - as if she blamed... Herself." Solarpaw padded over to the den entrance before giving a nod of his head. "I need to go as well. I don't want to miss training. See you later, Ivypaw." He gave a self-conscious lick of his chest before scurrying out of the apprentice's den as fast as a mouse. I'd better go and face Cedartalon. The shadow-colored apprentice gave one last sigh before slipping out of the den. She was greeted by the sight of her mentor flexing her long claws in and out of the earth impatiently. Cedartalon looked nervous rather than angry to Ivypaw; the brown tortoiseshell's tail flipped to and fro behind her, causing the dirt below to sprinkle like rain every time her tail moved. Cedartalon's tawny orbs were fixated on her kneading claws. This can't be good. She thought as she carefully approached her anxious mentor. "Hi." She mewed, believing she sounded like a frightened kitten. Ivypaw watched as Cedartalon's eyes met hers. Cedartalon's troubled movements came to a halt. Rising to her paws, she announced, "Let's go out of camp. Follow me." With a beckon from her tail, the young apprentice trailed behind her mentor. The two walked in silence as DeerClan's camp became smaller in view. Once far enough, Cedartalon turned to face the young feline. Oh no, here it comes. Ivypaw groaned inwardly, preparing herself for the lecture. Her mentor exhaled, "Ivypaw, I want to start by saying that I am very glad you are okay. I am ecstatic that you have no injuries or that you weren't captured for good." Cedartalon closed her eyes, "I would have gone in there myself if you were captured for too long." Ivypaw found herself admiring the courage of her mentor at that moment. The older feline continued, opening her eyes, "I am unsure if you know this, but you are my first apprentice. I have not trained anyone else. I have to take my duty as your mentor seriously because of this." Woah. It smacked Ivypaw in the face that she was Cedartalon's first apprentice. I see why she was so nervous earlier... Cedartalon's gaze flitted to her own paws. "I do not want to be strict. I want you to know that as well as your mentor, I am someone who will be cheering for your successes and there for you when you fail - even after you become a warrior. But this does not mean while you are my apprentice that you can disobey my judgment." The umber-furred molly met her apprentice's gaze. "It was brave what you did, I'll admit, but DeerClan cannot fathom losing a cat so young. I want you to listen to me from now on, okay?" Cedartalon's eyes were nothing but warm and kind. Ivypaw could see that her mentor cared a lot for her. "Yes, Cedartalon," Ivypaw meowed. "I want to apologize... I'm sorry for not listening to you. From now on, I will do better." The young feline puffed her chest out. Cedartalon purred, warmth seeping from the rumble in her chest. It caused Ivypaw's purr to bubble over as well. "Can we hunt now?" In the days after their talk, Ivypaw had focused on her training. She had even begun to wake up earlier than her peers, right before morning. Cedartalon had motivated her by talking about the Rendezvous; it caused Ivypaw to draw her thoughts back to the SpringClan apprentice she had met previously. She knew he would be there since leaders always chose the newest apprentices and warriors to the Rendezvous to attend. I'm excited to see my friend again, Ivypaw had thought, I bet Emberpaw will be glad to see me too. Now, night had fallen and the Leafrise's full moon hung proudly in the sky. Ivypaw was waiting enthusiastically next to her sister while Ashstar called out the rest of the cats who would be going. "All cats who are going to the Rendezvous, please gather in the center of the camp in the next few moments." The leader hopped off of the Highest Point - a huge boulder in the camp that Ashstar called Clan meetings and ceremonies at - with a swish of his tail. Ravenhaze, Cedartalon, Ivypaw, Doveblossom, Icypaw, Amberglow, Solarpaw, Crimsonhowl, Maplepaw, Wisteriabark, Furzetweet, and Riverscratch all congregated as Ashstar had directed. The dark grey leader slipped to the head of the group and signaled with a flick of his tail for his deputy to walk alongside him and the patrol of cats began their journey to the Rendezvous. Ivypaw kept up with Icypaw, happily flicking her tail back and forth. Her sister turned to face her, "Our first Rendezvous! Are you excited?" "Excited is an understatement!"

CHAPTER FIVE From what Ivypaw understood, the journey to The Rendezvous wasn’t as far as it was for the other Clans. She recalled as a kitten her time spent with the senior Skyburr telling her about The Rendezvous. He had told her that AlpineClan was the furthest away and had to start their journey right before the sunset so the Clan could make it in time; Skyburr told her they were always early to the occasion because they were always afraid to accidentally miss it. That must be terrible having to walk so far, especially at night! It then dawned on Ivypaw that she would be seeing all the Clans together for the first time. Wow… There will be so many cats to meet! Emberpaw will be there, too! Icypaw brushed her white pelt against Ivypaw’s black one, jerking Ivypaw out of her thoughts. “This will be so interesting, Ivypaw. I will get the chance to speak with the other healers! They had to be silent for my ceremony.” purred Icypaw, her gaze landing on a jovial Ivypaw. “I am sure you are excited to meet the other apprentices as well. I won’t be able to sit next to you, since I have to sit next to Doveblossom, but know that I’ll be here if you get nervous.” The frost-furred molly sounded as if she matured to Cedartalon’s age. Ivypaw nodded as Icypaw gave her ear a comforting lick. “I’m going to catch up to Doveblossom.” The young healer apprentice gave a happy flick of her tail before bouncing off to find her mentor. Watching her sister bounce ahead, a yellow pelt beside her caught Ivypaw’s attention. Solarpaw was walking alongside her, looking as if he wished to speak to her. Ivypaw broke into an entertained purr, “Hi, Solarpaw. Are you ready to see all these other cats, or are you nervous?” From the look in the young tom’s eye, she guessed he was nervous. His tail whipped like an angry snake back and forth behind him, almost slapping Amberglow in the face; Amberglow sped up a little to get away from his anxious tail. The marigold-colored apprentice’s ears twitched and swiveled around as if he were listening for every sound. The fur on his spine was bristled with uneasiness and Ivypaw could faintly trace the scent of his fear. “I suppose you could say that I’m nervous…” Solarpaw attempted to give a purr to calm his frenzied worries, but it cracked and froze as if it were a plant in Ice-chill in his throat. Ivypaw frowned. Maybe I should try to stick beside him to make him feel better… That’s what friends are for, right?Ivypaw spoke her thoughts aloud, “Would it make you feel better if I sat next to you while we listened and were presented to the other Clans?” She knew that her friend would be on edge even more because of the announcement of becoming apprentices. Onyxwing had told her and Icypaw about his first time being introduced as an apprentice to all of the Clans when the sisters were young. Solarpaw's ears perked up and his mood had shifted. "You… You would sit with me? Really? I would really… I would enjoy that, Ivypaw." His whiskers quivered enthusiastically, his jittery demeanor vanishing almost completely. His eyes locked with Ivypaw's for the first time Ivypaw could recall. Usually, he never made eye contact or would hold gazes for a short period. Ecstatic to be able to uplift Solarpaw, Ivypaw's tail swished behind her. The raven-furred molly nodded, "Then it's settled. I'll sit next to you." A purr erupted in Solarpaw's throat, and Ivypaw couldn't help but return it. The two walked alongside each other with their tails held high, trekking through DeerClan’s part of the Clan territories. Eventually, they returned to the Roaring Path where Ivypaw shuddered. I didn’t realize I would have to be here again so soon… Ivypaw assumed Solarpaw saw her grimace because he gave her an encouraging expression. After the group of cats crossed the dangerous path successfully, Ivypaw was relieved that Ashstar didn’t lead them toward the Walking Stick dens. She did spot Fiona watching them from inside her den and nodded to her, to which she nodded back; She was glad no one had noticed her recognize a den cat. DeerClan swiftly moved through the rest of the forest and Ivypaw wasn’t going to complain since it all looked relatively similar to DeerClan’s territory. Finally, Ivypaw saw it. A huge boulder encased in vines and moss proudly stood in the center of a clearing. There were fallen logs surrounding the bottom of the boulder where she assumed the deputies and healers sat. A spring flowed near the large boulder, rushing along peacefully. Beyond the glade, Ivypaw saw mountains peeking out and stabbing the night sky. Scents of something Ivypaw couldn’t quite make out touched her nose, and when she opened her jaws to ask, she closed them after spotting a silhouette approaching the large boulder with a group of felines sitting on one side chatting away. What Clan is this? They smell weird… Like, trees maybe? As if she said it out loud, she heard her mentor beside her say, “That is AlpineClan. Breathe in their scent. They smell of alpine trees and dry herbs normally.” Ivypaw dipped her head. “I hope the other Clans smell different so I can identify them all…” She heard Cedartalon trill softly, clearly somewhat amused at Ivypaw’s worry. Narrowing her eyes, she finally saw the leader who was sitting properly on the boulder. The leader was a dark brown tabby tom with a white chest and belly paired with yellowish-green eyes. He sat with his tail curled around his paws, anxiously flicking his gaze from his Clan to DeerClan. “That’s Falconstar, right? The leader of AlpineClan? He seems nervous…” Ivypaw commented. Giving a nod of her head, Cedartalon set her gaze on the AlpineClan leader. “Falconstar is a paranoid cat. He is very obviously afraid his Clan will be torn apart again.” Falconstar’s tail tip twitched nervously as he watched the DeerClan leader begin to climb up the large boulder. Her mentor gave a soft sigh, “We all wish he weren’t so anxious about it. He has done well rebuilding AlpineClan back up.” In the midst of that, another Clan emerged from the forest, mixing their mossy-like scent with AlpineClan’s. The Clan’s leader was a dark grey tabby with green eyes; He was muscular in a way that intimidated Ivypaw. The leader approached the boulder with a flick of his tail. “What is his name?” The young apprentice whipped her gaze to meet Cedartalon’s as the rest of DeerClan began to settle to one side of the boulder. “That is Stormstar of MistClan,” replied Cedartalon, “He is a respectable leader. He leads his Clan to be very proper and formal; if you were to talk to a MistClan cat, you’d see what I mean.” Stormstar’s eyes landed on the two leaders as he made his way up the boulder. Cedartalon continued, “He understands the bond between our Clan, MistClan, and SpringClan. So far, he has not tried to break the trust.” Ivypaw watched as Stormstar gave a humble nod to Ashstar and Falconstar. Another Clan emerged from the forest from a different direction. Ivypaw could distinctly scent mud and dirt drifting from the cats. She tilted her head curiously as she noticed some of the cats had nearly no tail. Cedartalon must have seen her confusion and spoke, “That’s RabbitClan. That is where Crimsonhowl came from, hence why she barely has a tail. Some of these cats have chosen to have no tail because they say it helps them run faster, or they are simply born without it. Crimsonhowl was born without it.” As Cedartalon talked, Ivypaw watched as a tan-colored tom with a short tail assertively strode his way to the boulder. “That is Rabbitstar. He is a confident and protective leader from what Crimsonhowl says.” Ivypaw took in their scent and noted it to herself. SpringClan isn’t here yet… I hope I get to talk with Emberpaw. Ivypaw found herself thinking of the SpringClan apprentice once more, giving her pelt an embarrassed ruffle. Fluffing out her fur, she strolled over to where Solarpaw was sitting - which was next to Maplepaw. She mewed a quick hello to her other friend before returning her attention to the other Clans. They were mingled together; She could see Wisteriabark talking with a MistClan molly, Doveblossom speaking with the RabbitClan healer with Icypaw, and even Riverscratch curled up next to an AlpineClan senior. It was peculiar to witness so many cats mixed and chatting away as if there were no separate territories. After what seemed like moons, the scent of fresh spring water and fish lingered on her nose. She whipped her head around to see SpringClan appear from the shadows. A powerful-looking ginger molly was the head of the group, but Ivypaw wasn’t focused on SpringClan’s leader. She met her friend’s gaze with a friendly expression and Emberpaw returned it. It’s nice to see him. She commented to herself, finally breaking her stare away. SpringClan’s leader called up to the large boulder, “Apologies for being late.” The other Clan leaders dipped their heads in understanding as they waited for the SpringClan leader to join them. Ivypaw’s ears flicked in the direction of paw steps heading towards her. Her eyes brightened as Emberpaw came into view. “Sorry!” apologized the tom, “Gingerstar was having a meeting with some of the senior warriors.” Ivypaw felt Solarpaw and Maplepaw stare at her as she gave a gleeful meow, but she didn’t care. “Is it alright if I sit with you for a moment?” Ivypaw nodded and shifted some for the SpringClan tom to settle next to her. “I’m Emberpaw, by the way!” He beamed at the other two, to which they introduced themselves to him. “Cats of the Clans, the Rendezvous has begun!” Stormstar raised his voice above the noise of the cats to be heard, and all chatting died away. His tail swished happily as the Clans quieted down almost instantly. He turned to the other leaders with a questioning twitch of his whiskers, “Who will be the first to speak on the Rushing Boulder? Or do you wish for me to be first?” The Clan leaders murmured to themselves for a moment before Ashstar stepped forward, to which Stormstar hung back. Ashstar puffed his chest out, pride surging through him. “Things are going well in DeerClan. We have several kittens who will be made out to become apprentices very soon. And, speaking of apprentices, we have four new apprentices - Icypaw, Ivypaw, Solarpaw, and Maplepaw.” The DeerClan leader broke out into a purr. Ivypaw and her peers rose to their paws as instructed by their mentors and the other Clans cheered out their names. She couldn’t help but be overjoyed as Emberpaw called her name beside her. I have to be loud for him, too. It’s only fair. She suppressed a purr of affection that dared to rise in her throat when she and Icypaw met gazes. After Ashstar finished his news, Stormstar was next. “We have news of new apprentices as well. Bumblepaw and Doepaw, please rise.” Two apprentices rose to their paws - one was a white tom with black and yellow calico markings while the other cat was a light brown molly. Stormstar continued, “Their mentors are Starlingleap and Daisyhaze.” A dark grey molly and a white molly rose to their paws, proudly standing next to their apprentices. Wow, they are as formal as Cedartalon said. I wonder if Bumblepaw and Doepaw are like that. Ivypaw joined in on the cheering of the new apprentices’ names. Once Stormstar finished the rest of his news, Rabbitstar was the next leader to speak. His bobbed tail quivered as he lifted his chin in gratification. “RabbitClan has been thriving. Sparkbloom and Spiderslip have recently had their first litter of kittens named Rubykit and Volekit.” Rabbitstar paused for everyone to congratulate the mother and father. He went on, “Woodpaw has become a warrior by the name of Woodsnap, Dandelionpaw has become a runner by the name of Dandelionweaver, and Smokepaw has become the apprentice of Sunnychirp. I am thrilled that RabbitClan is gaining more and more wonderful cats each day.” The tan tom looked as if he were about to burst with satisfaction from the Clans calling the cats he had listed names. AlpineClan’s leader was the next to share his news. “AlpineClan also has new births - Snowpoppy and Otterdash have had their first litter of kittens named Hootkit and Bramblekit. They are also taking care of a kitten a patrol had found alone on the territory; Snowpoppy and Otterdash have decided to name her Shadowkit.” The Clans yowled their congratulations to the new parents and Falconstar raised his tail for silence once finished. “We would also like to inform all Clans that we have been seeing more outsiders around the territory. We are unsure if they are friendly or will travel to your territories, but be aware.” He dipped his head before stepping back to allow the last leader to speak. As Gingerstar was stepping up, Ivypaw’s gaze drifted to where Emberpaw was sitting beside her to find an empty spot. He must have had to leave so he could be presented. She flicked her attention back to the Rushing Boulder. “We also have new apprentices named Emberpaw, Echopaw, and Sprucepaw.” She called out the new apprentices, especially Emberpaw, as the three rose to their paws. Gingerstar cleared her throat and her tail lashed in sudden annoyance. Uh oh, what’s happened? An awkward silence fell over the Clans. Gingerstar shot a warning glare at Ashstar, “Some of us need to make sure we are on our borders,” she swung her head to address the Clans, “Patrols have been reporting back to me scents of other Clans on our territory. Please be aware of your borders.” The SpringClan leader narrowed her light emerald eyes before announcing, “Clans are dismissed.” Ivypaw looked to her friends in confusion. What? A trespassing DeerClan cat? That makes no sense! Unless… Her eyes drifted to Emberpaw, who was getting to his paws to leave with his Clan. No way… Did he tell Gingerstar about when we met? Uneasiness flowered and tightened in Ivypaw’s stomach. Oh no, am I going to be in trouble again?

CHAPTER SIX As DeerClan left, Ivypaw's thoughts were stuck on Emberpaw. Dread was like a hollow stone in her stomach. Maybe I shouldn't have trusted him... Ivypaw stared at the ground as she trailed behind her mentor, Solarpaw at her side. However, she took no notice of either of them. Anxiety swarmed her like bees attacking their opponent, her mouth dry. Have I caused DeerClan more trouble? Oh, Stars, I hope I haven't made things worse... Ivypaw exhaled softly through her nose, feeling as if the world had suddenly settled on her shoulders. "Ivypaw? Are you alright?" Solarpaw's mew jerked her from her thoughts. She met his gaze with a nod. "Ivypaw, I'm your friend. You know... You can tell me anything." The young tom gave the young molly a comforting look, "Tell me what's on your mind. Maybe... Maybe I can help." The coal-furred apprentice suppressed a surge of ease that dared to pass through her. I'm lucky to have a good friend... Perhaps I can trust him with this. Ivypaw's gaze swung from side to side before she slowed down. Solarpaw followed her lead and tilted his head curiously at her. "Can you keep a secret?" He nodded his head with a quizzical twinkle in his eyes. "Okay...You know Emberpaw, the SpringClan tom that sat next to me?" When Solarpaw nodded, Ivypaw continued, "I met him a few nights ago at The Spring. I didn't intend to meet him, but he was there too. I suppose you can say we are friends, but I am not so sure now... I think he told his leader about me and made up a lie saying I crossed the border when I didn't." She sighed, almost with relief that she could talk about her worries. Solarpaw's eyes stretched wide, "Oh no... I'm sorry Ivypaw. Maybe it's best not to see him anymore." The tom cast a sympathetic glance at his friend, "It seems as if he... Maybe he was sent to spy. Perhaps you shouldn't be friends anymore. He sounds dangerous for you." The sun-colored apprentice's ears were pinned to his head, a worried expression crawling on his face. Ivypaw thought for a moment. Is Emberpaw that dangerous?Curled up in her nest, Ivypaw sighed. Her thoughts were still on the flame-furred SpringClanner. That's it, I must see him and get to the bottom of this. She rose to her paws and soundlessly crept out of the apprentice's den. It seemed as if the entire Clan was asleep; Ivypaw could hear the soft sounds of some of her Clanmates snoring. Her gaze landed on Doveblossom and Icypaw's den when a thought struck her. Maybe I should tell Icypaw before I go. Ivypaw drew in a deep breath before scurrying to the entrance. Instantly, Ivypaw found her sister curled up next to her mentor. It was heartwarming to see Icypaw and Doveblossom getting along so well. With a gentle prod to her littermate's shoulder, Icypaw shifted and looked over. "Ivypaw..?" The healer apprentice questioned in a whisper, and Ivypaw signaled with her tail to follow her. "What's going on?" Icypaw asked as she rose to her paws in which Ivypaw waved her tail for silence. I don't want her to get in trouble with Doveblossom. The warrior apprentice led Icypaw out of the den and stopped when she reached the prey pile. "What's going on?" Icypaw inquired softly after a yawn. "I have something to explain to you." "Go on..." Ivypaw ran through the explanation quickly. Icypaw's eyes twinkled with interest, "So... What do you think?" Ivypaw shifted her paws, slight nervousness sparking throughout her body. "I don't believe Emberpaw is a dangerous cat, but Solarpaw thinks so... I feel I should speak with him." Icypaw suddenly gave a small mew of laughter, causing Ivypaw to tilt her head curiously. "What's so funny, Icypaw?" Icypaw trilled quietly, "Do you realize what is happening?" Ivypaw stared at her in thought before shaking her head. "Ivypaw, Solarpaw is jealous. Surely you have noticed the way he looks at you?" Her sister's eyes shimmered with amusement. "He sees Emberpaw as a threat. Of course, he is going to say that. From the way you speak of Emberpaw, he seems to be a kind-hearted tom. I don't believe he would do that to you. Do you see Solarpaw as a possibility to become your mate someday?" The question hung in the air for a few moments. Ivypaw wasn't sure what to say. Ivypaw shook her head, "Solarpaw is just a good friend to me. I... I don't see him in that way. He is a good cat, but I just... I don't think he would be my mate." Her tail lashed with sudden chagrin. She had never thought of Solarpaw in an enamored light before. I have only seen him as a friend, not a mate... Is that wrong of me? No, I cannot help that I don't feel that way about him. Icypaw nodded her head in understanding. "That's okay, Ivypaw. Don't feel obligated to think of him in that way just because he is infatuated with you." The frost-furred apprentice gave her sister a comforting lick on the ear. "I think the SpringClan tom sounds more of your type anyway." Her whiskers twitched in an entertained manner, "Only kidding. But I do agree that you need to get to the bottom of it." Ivypaw nodded. "If anyone asks, I'll say you had a bad dream and you went back to the apprentice's den. You'll have to cover your tail if anyone sees you by The Spring." Icypaw purred, giving her sister a final lick on the ear before heading towards the healer's den. The young feline nodded, now definite in her decision. Her jade-colored eyes landed on the cat on guard; It was Raintrill, one of the senior patrollers. She's kind of scary looking... Ivypaw thought, Could I sneak around her? No, she is a patroller; She's been trained to detect anything. I have to face her and hope she lets me go. Ivypaw's paw steps became softer to avoid alarming the grey molly guarding DeerClan's camp. "Is someone there?" A voice questioned ahead, and Ivypaw's ears stood tall on her head. I should've known she could hear me well, too! The apprentice exhaled, gathering the courage to speak with the older cat. Raintrill's sepia gaze landed on the adolescent molly in front of her. "Ivypaw? Are you okay? Why have you come?" Ivypaw's ears relaxed, I suppose she is concerned about something going on within the camp. In the fair moonlight, Raintrill's age showed a little. Her stature didn't seem as frightening to Ivypaw now that she was face to face with the older molly. The scar running a short race along her nose didn't seem so ominous now. Ivypaw's apprehension died down as she cleared her throat. "Greetings, Raintrill. I apologize for startling you, it wasn't my intention." The night-furred molly tried to speak respectfully to Raintrill, "I was wondering if it would be okay if I went to The Spring to have a drink? I understand apprentices aren't to be alone at night, but I won't be long." Raintrill hummed in thought, scanning over Ivypaw as if to see if she was lying. Ivypaw added, "If I am later than you are comfortable with, you can always come and get me. I don't mind." The warrior apprentice's tail tip twitched in wonder. Please, I need to see Emberpaw.Raintrill sighed, "Okay. Just this time you can go by yourself. Next time, I will escort you. Fair?" Ivypaw nodded and mewed a quick thanks before sauntering away. Once out of sight, she ran as if she had never run in her life. Yes! I hope Emberpaw is here. As she made her way toward the tranquil stream that separated the two Clans, her heart raced with anticipation. Hmm... I wonder if he is close by? Ivypaw scanned the area; She caught a glimpse of a small silhouette of a feline approaching from SpringClan's land. That has to be him! She waited until the cat had come into view and sure enough, it was the ginger tabby drawing closer. The SpringClan tom's orbs were extended wide as he came closer. "Ivypaw?" He mewed, "Is that you?" Ivypaw mewed a quick hello and Emberpaw began to purr. "I had a feeling you were here!" He sat next to his side of The Spring, his paws tucked underneath him with his tail wrapped around himself. He bent his head and lapped at the water for a moment before his gaze met the DeerClan molly's. "How are you doing?" His purr rumbled so loud in his chest that Ivypaw was sure Raintrill could hear it from camp. Ivypaw sat upright with her tail gently resting on her paws. "Emberpaw, I'm glad to see you here. I need to speak to you about something. I cannot be out here for long. I am sure you can't be either." Emberpaw gave a nod of his head with his whiskers perked forward. "Did... Did you tell your leader we met? At the Rendezvous, Gingerstar said a cat has been crossing borders. She looked to Ashstar when she said it..." Tension bubbled inside the young apprentice, dreading what her new friend had to say. Emberpaw shook his head, suddenly rising to his paws, "No, I would never!" His tone became slightly hushed but sounded genuine to Ivypaw. "Besides, you haven't even crossed over. I consider you a friend now, Ivypaw. I wouldn't betray you like that." His sky-colored optics were agape with shock. Ivypaw shrunk, her posture no longer straight with confidence. How could I accuse such a kind friend of such a thing? Ivypaw's ears flattened to her head, humiliation emitting from her like a sunny day radiating warmth. Her tail encased around herself as if to give herself comfort for her mistake. She mewed pathetically, "I'm sorry. I hope you can forgive my accusation. I had to know. I hope you understand why I had to ask." Ivypaw anxiously awaited Emberpaw's response, I hope we can move past this. When Emberpaw nodded in understanding, the molly's relief washed over her, and her tense muscles slowly relaxed. She breathed a sigh of reassurance, grateful that her friend understood where she was coming from. He stepped closer to The Spring, almost dipping a paw into the cool water. "Of course I forgive you. You have nothing to be sorry for. The accusations my leader is making against your Clan aren't about you, I know it." His tail flicked with satisfaction as he switched topics, "I wonder if we can meet here sometimes. I enjoy getting to know you more." The DeerClan apprentice's heart soared with an unfamiliar feeling to her. What is this feeling? thought Ivypaw, Maybe it's because I am excited to know him more. Emberpaw continued, "What if we try to meet here every three days? That way we don't have to worry so much about someone catching us. We could leave right before our Clans settle in for the night and meet here." Emberpaw's plan sounded perfect. Ivypaw couldn't help but break into a delighted purr. "That sounds wonderful." Daylight streamed into the open area. It had been two days since Ivypaw had seen Emberpaw. She tried to focus on her apprenticeship more than the SpringClan tom throughout the days, always busying herself with tasks. Now, she was in the part of the DeerClan forest where all of the mentors trained their apprentices. The Grassy Glade was the perfect training area; It was a wide clearing encircled by colorful trees. Although the Leafrise weather remained unchanged, the sky was now cloudy with the threat of rain on the way. "Okay Ivypaw, I want you to go ahead and try to attack me with what I have shown you. Remember, keep your claws sheathed as this is only training." Cedartalon called out from the opposite side. Ivypaw nodded, taking a deep breath. She charged at her mentor and as Cedartalon went to defend herself, the apprentice brought her paws down on Cedartalon's head. Ivypaw backed up with an excited lash of her tail as Cedartalon praised her. "Great! You seem to have that down. Let's go ahead and start a new move." As Cedartalon straightened up, a sharp yowling disrupted the training session. "What in the name of The Sta-" Cedartalon was cut off as a pale-furred tom barreled down the glade. As the tom came into view, Ivypaw recognized the patroller Furzetweet heading in their direction. Furzetweet reached the two, almost out of breath, and faced Cedartalon, "Cedartalon! Ashstar wants all warriors in camp, a group of SpringClan cats are approaching with a furious Gingerstar in the lead!" He turned his back on the duo, beckoning them with a flick of his tail. "Hurry! We believe there is going to be trouble!" What?! Why is Gingerstar angry now? Ivypaw followed closely behind Cedartalon and Furzetweet as distressed thoughts arose in her mind. I thought Emberpaw and I settled this! Trepidation welled up inside the young apprentice as she raced through the forest with her mentor by her side.

CHAPTER SEVEN The harsh scent of rain flowed into Ivypaw’s nose as the three felines bounded into camp. Furzetweet meowed, “Looks like we got here just in time!” Most of DeerClan gathered outside their dens, their eyes fixed on the camp’s entrance. Ivypaw spotted her mother and father standing side by side with serious expressions. The dark molly rushed to Frostpetal and Onyxwing, “Why is Gingerstar coming here? Leaders never come into camp unless it is serious, right?” Onyxwing was the one who replied, “Be prepared, Ivypaw. This may turn into a battle. I hope not, but we must be ready.” Her father’s words caused her to feel a mixture of nervousness and excitement. Will this be my first battle? A sudden thought arose. Will I have to face Emberpaw in battle? The thought of using her claws against her new friend compelled her to push it away. Focus, Ivypaw! Father said to be prepared. If it comes to it, I’ll show him and Mother my skills. On cue, the aroma of fresh spring water pervaded the adolescent molly’s nose. Here they come. Ivypaw’s claws unsheathed and sunk into the ground. Gingerstar appeared first with a fuzzy snow-furred molly trailing behind. A black tom with flecks of white walked in sync with a silver tabby with torn ears. The group was escorted by Firestep, Raintrill, Silverpaw, and Ravenhaze. Ashstar made his way to the center of the camp, his tail lashing with curiosity, “Greetings, Gingerstar,” dipping his head respectfully, the DeerClan leader continued, “What brings you?” Ivypaw noticed the patrollers were still flanking the SpringClan cats. The patrollers seem to be wary.Gingerstar’s light emerald eyes lit with irritation. The tip of her ginger tail twitched in annoyance to and fro. SpringClan warriors behind her wore similar expressions, almost imitating their leader’s behavior. She stepped towards Ashstar, “Ashstar, I am sure you recall at the Rendezvous when I addressed the Clans and spoke of the borders.” Ivypaw watched her leader’s demeanor change to a serious one. The SpringClan leader resumed, “It is still happening. My warriors are scenting DeerClan scent on our territory. I’ll have my warriors who have first noticed it explain. Pearltuft,” She beckoned the white molly forward with a swish of her tail. Pearltuft stepped up with a confident swish of her tail. “It has been a lingering scent. Nearly every night, we detect the scent of a DeerClan cat on our land. And, before you question, it is on our side of The Spring.” Pearltuft’s hazel gaze held Ashstar’s, almost as if she dared not to look away, “Rookburn and I have both been on a patrol when we picked up the trace of one of your cats.” The black tom stepped up next to Pearltuft, to which she backed off. Rookburn puffed his chest out. “Pearltuft and I have seen a shadowy figure of a young cat. We aren’t sure if it is an apprentice or a young warrior, but we assume it is one of your apprentices. We understand you have a gatherer apprentice who assists Myrtlelight in compiling herbs, but why would he trespass at night and not collect any resources? None of us have detected herb scents. We rule Lotuspaw out due to that assumption.” Ivypaw’s gaze landed on the silverish tom standing beside his mentor with a perplexed look. Rookburn was interrupted by the silver tabby that stood quietly next to him. “Control your young cats,” growled the tom, his low voice laced with menace, “Or we can do it for you.” His dark jade orbs blazed with outrage as he spoke. His tail whipped back and forth, which caused Firestep’s pelt to spike like jagged stones. Pearltuft and Rookburn shot the tom a warning glare; It was clear that they were trying to defuse the situation before it escalated any further. This has gone from a warning to a threat quickly. Ivypaw thought with growing unease at the tom’s aggressiveness. Gingerstar stepped in, lashing her tail in aggravation. “Mockingstrike, that is more than enough.” Mockingstrike? Where have I heard his name before? Ivypaw’s fur began to lie flat as she pondered about it. Oh! Mockingstrike is Emberpaw’s mentor! Emberpaw is nothing like him. “It is time for us to leave. Ashstar, this will be my official warning. I don’t wish this to go any further due to the bond. However, I have to protect my Clan. I hope that you understand.” Gingerstar turned and led her group out of the camp, the escorts following closely. The first rain droplets began to fall from the clouds. Ashstar’s tail twitched in vexation, face twisted bitterly. “All cats old enough to leap, meet under The Highest Point!” The leader called out as he approached the large boulder DeerClan called The Highest Point. Ivypaw followed her kin and sat comfortably next to them. Cedartalon settled next to Ivypaw, Solarpaw, and Amberglow seated on the other side. It seems Ashstar wanted to settle this now instead of waiting for Ravenhaze to join him. This is going to be interesting. Ivypaw commented to herself. Ashstar clawed at the rock beneath him, “I let this go earlier because I believed it was a mistake a young cat was making. I know that young apprentices like to wander sometimes. Gingerstar is now threatening us because of this. If you are the young cat making this silly mistake, please speak now.” All apprentices exchanged glances with each other. It seems no cat wants to take the blame. Perhaps I should. Right as Ivypaw opened her jaws to speak, a tail slapped over her maw. She swung her gaze to meet Cedartalon’s, who was shaking her head. She doesn’t think it was me. Ashstar’s voice rang out, “I don’t believe this. There is an apprentice who is wandering over the territory and is too afraid to take the fall. Fine! All apprentices will be watched at all times, even if they beg to go to The Spring alone. There will be a patroller to guard the apprentice’s den at night. Meeting dismissed.” The rain finally began to downpour on the Clan. Ashstar angrily slipped into his den while the rest of the felines dispersed. Ivypaw was already soaked, her bandana almost drowning in the heavy cloudburst. I won’t be able to meet Emberpaw tonight. Ivypaw thought defeatedly, finally rising to her paws to slip into the warmth of the apprentice’s den. The rain had sobbed on the Clan for two days. After what seemed to be forever, the clouds abandoned the sky and left room for the sun to warm the Earth. The fragrance of fresh flowers clung to the air. The robins returned to their nests in the branches of the dogwood trees. Ivypaw never had the chance to explain to Emberpaw what had happened due to the guarding of the apprentice’s den. Instead, she made the best of it and worked on her training as much as she could with Cedartalon. “Let’s finish for now. We can grab the mice we caught and bring them back to camp,” said Cedartalon, “You have done well today, Ivypaw. I am impressed with how far your training has come.” Ivypaw felt a purr of satisfaction erupt from her. Scooping up the prey, Ivypaw replied around the mouse hanging limply in her jaws, “Thank you, Cedartalon. I hope I will continue to do well.” She followed behind Cedartalon, proud of the catch she helped her mentor with. As the two trekked onward, the sound of yowling caused the duo to freeze. Ivypaw’s ears pricked forward in an attempt to identify the yowling. Cedartalon dropped the prey, “Ivypaw, take this prey to camp quickly. Take any warriors you can. This doesn’t sound good.” She nosed the prey to the crow-furred apprentice and the mice were scooped up in Ivypaw’s jaws. “Hurry!” Ivypaw nodded and raced off, heading to DeerClan’s camp without hesitation. She burst through the camp entrance and barely dropped the prey onto the pile. Ivypaw yowled, “Help! Something is going on in the forest!” Immediately, Brightwisp, Sootrattle, and Cinderskip all hurried over to the camp’s entrance with Ivypaw at their side. Oh, Stars, what is going on? I’m glad I have three strong warriors to help! Barrelling into the forest, the cats were met with the sight of Onyxwing, Oakdust, and Cedartalon struggling to fight off large black and white creatures. Badgers! They must have stumbled upon their home! Cinderskip jumped on the badger that wrestled with Cedartalon, Sootrattle joined in clawing the creature with Oakdust, and Brightwisp scurried over to Onyxwing. The warrior apprentice was about to head over to her father when a smaller badger suddenly attacked her from behind. The badger pinned Ivypaw down and snarled, showing its yellow sharp teeth. Ivypaw slashed at its eyes, causing the badger to stumble back and howl with pain. Ivypaw took a glance around while the badger was down. Oakdust and Sootrattle had successfully pinned the badger down; Cinderskip and Cedartalon gave the finishing blow to the badger they were attacked by. While distracted, the badger roared with fury and launched itself at Ivypaw. She wailed as the badger raked its claws down her body. Help! She couldn’t say the words as the badger aggressively clamped its jaws around the bandana on her neck. The badger attempted to choke Ivypaw with her bandana, tearing a small hole at the bottom of it. Ivypaw felt defenseless as she tried her hardest to pull away with her claws aimlessly scratching at the air. I’m going to die! Right as the badger was about to bite Ivypaw’s neck, it was knocked to the ground by a brown blur. The apprentice blundered backward and caught her breath. Oakdust! Oakdust growled, now on its back, clawing the creature wildly. The badger bellowed with agony and shook Oakdust off. It loomed over Oakdust, ready to give the final blow. “No!” Ivypaw screeched, pouncing onto the badger’s back and copying what Oakdust did. The badger jerked her away, sending Ivypaw hard onto the ground. Oakdust managed to stand back up in the time Ivypaw distracted it and faced it head-on. Ivypaw slowly rose to her paws while Oakdust and the badger fought fiercely. Pain rushed throughout her body. I can barely stand… But I… I can’t leave Oakdust alone. She finally managed to stand all the way when she heard the distressed shriek of Oakdust. The badger had gotten the final blow. Oakdust lay defeatedly, blood trickling down his neck. “Oakdust, no!” Ivypaw shouted. The badger turned and was met with a bloodied Sootrattle and Cedartalon attacking. The pain in Ivypaw’s side felt like thorns pushing deeper and deeper, but she whipped her gaze to her father, who was fighting a badger by himself. Cinderskip and Brightwisp had another small badger to deal with now. “Father! I’m coming!” The young molly raced to Onyxwing as fast as she could, but it was too late. The badger shredded her father’s stomach, blood now dribbling from his mouth. His eyes looked almost blank as he twitched uncontrollably. Ivypaw froze in shock. “You… You foxheart!” She snarled above the sounds of battle, the glimmer in her eyes now determined. She flung herself at the badger, catching it off guard. She scrambled onto its back while it snapped its jaws wildly at her. Ivypaw fastened her teeth on its neck hard, drawing blood. The badger hissed in despair, thrashing around vigorously. She refused to let go, dragging her claws forcefully down its back. Cedartalon ran over, her unusually long claws digging into its muzzle. The badger exploded with umbrage, shaking Ivypaw off and running away from the fight. The adrenaline coursing through Ivypaw’s veins finally started to wear down, as now she could feel the injuries from the battle. The badgers were gone now. Sootrattle and Brightwisp were checking Oakdust over, trying to save his life. Cinderskip rushed over, “Is everyone okay over here?” Ivypaw could barely hear her. Her gaze fixated on her dying father. “Ivypaw, we need to get you to the-” Ivypaw cut Cinderskip off coldly, “I’m fine!” She tried to make her way to her father, but pain shot through her side each time she took a step. Cedartalon scurried to her apprentice and allowed her to lean against her. As they reached Onyxwing, Ivypaw broke down. “Father! I’m so… This is my fault…” She collapsed next to her father, who was on the brink of death. Onyxwing coughed, “Ivypaw… You did all you could. Please tell your mother and sister that… I love them. I love you. You will do great things in your life. It’s… It’s my time to go.” Ivypaw nuzzled her father’s back as he took his last breath. She felt water dripping from her eyes and landing on Onyxwing’s fur. Ivypaw felt a tail lay on her, which she assumed was Cedartalon’s, but had no desire to take a look. Ivypaw’s heart felt like it had shattered. Grief overwhelmed her. Hopelessness seeped into her body and overtook her. I know how Emberpaw feels now…

CHAPTER EIGHT Three moons had passed since the death of Onyxwing and Oakdust. Frostpetal and Icypaw were devastated at the initial news of Onyxwing's death. The burial of their father and mate had felt unreal. Ashstar had even expressed his sympathies for the kin of Onyxwing. It turned out that there was a badger den near the territory, which was taken care of. After the death of two Clanmates, Ashstar hadn't worried about the trespassing DeerClan cat as it seemed to stop after the tragedy. Ivypaw had gotten to speak to Emberpaw the night after, Emberpaw expressing his condolences. Healer Day, a tradition between all Clans, had even come and gone. Icypaw was so eager that Ivypaw couldn't help but feel as if Onyxwing was smiling down on her sister from The Stars. Icypaw had reported to her kin that she had found a ruby and conjured Onyxwing's spirit. He had told the young healer to keep going down the path she was following. Frostpetal was relieved to hear that he was watching over them and encouraging his daughters to become the best cats they could become. DeerClan had two new apprentices - Cloudpaw and Mistypaw. The two were assigned to Firestep and Sootrattle. Ivypaw and Icypaw were ecstatic that their nursery friends had finally joined them in the apprentice ranks. Their mother, Briardew, had returned to her patroller duties happily. Ivypaw felt as if she were going to bust with pride for her friends when they were presented at the last Rendezvous. However, at the previous Rendezvous, Gingerstar had again mentioned borders. She had let DeerClan slip under her nose since two cats had died, but she was agitated more than ever now. Ivypaw couldn't blame Gingerstar. She was growing frustrated with her Clanmate who continued to infringe on SpringClan's territory. I have got to do something about this. It feels that no one is taking this seriously. Ivypaw thought, now curled up in her nest. Her emerald gaze scanned the apprentice's den for any movement before slowly rising to her paws. She exited the den as quickly and quietly as she could. The molly stood at the front of the den, allowing the early Scorch-blaze air to wrap around her like a vine. Ivypaw's ears swiveled around to listen for any movements of her Clanmates. It seems everyone is asleep. She padded discreetly to the camp's entrance, spotting Briardew guarding the way. Perhaps she will allow me to go. She has never had an issue with me. After all, Cloudpaw and Mistypaw are my friends. "Briardew," Ivypaw called softly, "It's me, Ivypaw." Briardew turned to face Ivypaw with a curious tilt of her head. The apprentice confidently stood in front of the patroller with her tail high. "Is it alright if I get a drink? I woke up thirsty." The brown and white molly nodded, "Sure. Don't be out very long, though." Ivypaw dipped her head respectfully to Briardew and hurried off toward The Spring. The moon was barely out, shielding some of its beauty away. The stars above made up for the usual pale light beams by twinkling brightly in the sky. Crickets chatting away with each other filled the air. The dim lighting made the water's rippling surface beautiful that night, almost making Ivypaw forget what mission she was on. The apprentice settled beside the water, bending her head to drink from it. Emberpaw should be here tonight. It's our usual meeting night. Ivypaw thought with a whisk of her tail. Not long did the flame-furred tabby come into view. His ears perked up upon seeing his friend and meowed in greeting. Ivypaw's whiskers perked forward as her friend approached, and this time he looked particularly happy. "Ivypaw, hello!" Emberpaw trilled, reaching The Spring's edge. He remained standing as if he couldn't contain his excitement. His tail waved back and forth like a tree's leaves swaying in the breeze. "I have some news for you. I have confronted Gingerstar about the tension between our Clans, and she assured me she doesn't want to break the bond! However, she still wants to check borders." Ivypaw thought she was going to jump into the water out of relief. Finally, someone understood where she and Emberpaw were coming from! Ivypaw couldn't help the purr that bubbled in her throat, "That's great news! Perhaps we won't have to fight each other after all!" Suddenly, the DeerClan molly was grateful for the bond between her Clan, SpringClan, and MistClan. If it weren't for the connection of the Clans, she knew they would have been tearing into SpringClan by now. Emberpaw began to purr as well, his sky-like stare sparkling with accomplishment. After a moment, Emberpaw lifted his chin, "I've got some time before I have to go... Perhaps we can race." The successful twinkle in his gaze shifted into a playful one. Ivypaw's ears perked up, her tail swishing. The SpringClan tom continued, "We will race to the Roaring Path! Whoever loses... Well, it won't be me!" He worked his claws in and out of the ground below him excitedly. Ivypaw whisked her tail, "Let's race then. I'll win anyway!" Emberpaw darted off without warning. She couldn't help the entertained twitch of her whiskers as she sprang to her paws. Racing alongside the winding spring, Ivypaw's thoughts drifted a bit. The breeze ruffling her fur gently with the glimmering starlight put her at ease. It had been a while since her thoughts had melted away. She wasn't thinking about her dead father, the tension between Clans, or even her warrior assessment. She finally felt free. For once, she thought of how fun it would be if Emberpaw were a part of DeerClan and how much they would train and play together. It wasn't until Emberpaw called her name that Ivypaw had jerked out of her thoughts. She stopped near the edge of the Roaring Path, watching as Emberpaw padded up to her. "You won! Did you even know you won? You look as if you were deep in thought." He touched a friendly nose to her cheek, and her body warmed at it. She pushed the feeling away before nodding. "I apologize, Emberpaw. It's just been a while since I've gotten to relax. I'm sure you understand." Her stare rested on the opposing apprentice, watching as the tom nodded. "I enjoy spending time with you. It helps settle my mind..." She admitted with a bashful expression. "Perhaps I should race with you more often." Emberpaw trilled, "Perhaps we should." The two locked gazes for a brief moment before he continued, "We should probably head back. I'm sure we have both been out long enough." He dipped his head to Ivypaw. "I'll see you later." With that, the shorter feline padded to his territory. Returning to DeerClan camp safely, Ivypaw slipped past Briardew as the patroller greeted her arrival. Briardew hadn't said anything as Ivypaw walked on by. I'm in the clear. She didn't suspect a thing! Triumphantly, Ivypaw began to head to the apprentice's den soundlessly before she felt a tug at her tail. Whipping around, Ivypaw was met with Cedartalon flicking her tail as a signal to follow. Oh no, she caught me. Dread filled the apprentice like a heavy stone in her stomach as she reluctantly trailed behind her mentor. Cedartalon led her apprentice to the prey pile, gaze swinging side to side in case anyone was listening in. She hissed, "Ivypaw, where did you go?" The brown tortoiseshell's tail tip tapped the ground impatiently, but Ivypaw could tell Cedartalon wasn't fuming. If anything, she seemed worried. Ivypaw's tail held still, her nervous gaze meeting her mentor's troubled one. "I just went out for a drink-" "I've seen you going out of camp every few nights. I don't believe it's just going for a drink." Ivypaw didn't have any excuse now. She fished for one in her mind as Cedartalon added, "Are you aware of the border issues with SpringClan? Maybe you've forgotten how much they've been on our tails about it and that you aren't to be alone at night? If I were Ashstar or Ravenhaze and I saw you sneaking around, you would be my first suspect." Her hazel gaze lit with a sense of irritation, but Ivypaw could see past it with ease. "Ivypaw, I know losing your father was hard," began the warrior, "but you cannot be rebelling. Not right now." Sudden anger replaced her worry. How dare Cedartalon accuse her of acting out when she was helping the Clans? Of course, she wouldn't know that, and Ivypaw wasn't about to tell her. The apprentice's tail lashed with vexation. Ivypaw narrowed her jade stare, " I'm so tired of everyone pitying me! My father was a brave and loyal warrior, and I miss him every single day. But I'm not a kitten anymore! No one needs to nurse me! Stop treating me as if I'm three moons old! I'm training to become a strong warrior like my father, not a kitten!" It wasn't until silence hung in the air that Ivypaw realized her outburst. Her ears pinned, scowl remaining on her expression. Cedartalon, taken aback by the sudden eruption of Ivypaw's pent-up anger, flattened her ears against her head. "I'm... I'm sorry. It's just..." Ivypaw trailed off, looking away. Her mentor nodded, "It's okay. Tell me what's going on, Ivypaw. Your mother and I are just worried for you. Frostpetal told me to teach you the best way I know how and to guide you on the right path, and I promised her I would do just that." Cedartalon's demeanor had shifted from worried to relaxed. "You know I'm here for you outside of your training. I'd like to think that we are friends, too." Ivypaw nodded, gathering the courage to look Cedartalon in the eyes. Ivypaw sighed, "It's just this border dispute. I'm worried it will turn into a battle and break the bond. I want to help diffuse it. I know I'm just an apprentice, but I'll become a warrior in no time." The weight of it all seemed to fall off the young feline's body. Relaxing her muscles she didn't realize were tense, Ivypaw sat. Cedartalon copied her, ears perked forward. "I love my Clan, but I know that this border nonsense is foolish. Ashstar needs to talk it out with Gingerstar." Cedartalon hummed in thought. "Let's have faith in Ashstar and Ravenhaze. They're leading DeerClan for a reason. They haven't led us down the wrong path before - I doubt they will now." Her expression had changed into a soft-hearted one, "I trust in them, and you should too. Don't question Ashstar; He's a fierce leader when it comes down to it. Let's get some rest. We have training to do in the morning." She rose to her paws and touched her nose to her apprentice's forehead in a comforting way. Ivypaw followed suit, meowing a goodnight to her mentor before slipping into the apprentice's den. Once inside, she curled up in her nest, tail on her muzzle. Cedartalon is a good mentor and friend.
