Nightmare of Blood
Entree for mintedstar/fur🦇 ‘s writing prompt
Prompt: A strange sound is heard ... from ... right ... behind ... -
Nightmare of Blood is a short story taking place in the farther future after the events of An Isolated Clan. It contains spoilers revolving around a character death however the death is completely unrelated to An Isolated Clan’s plot and is like I previously said taking place far enough in the future.
The first book of An Isolated Clan (which is currently a WIP) can be read here.

Paw steps seemed to creep towards Evergreenpaw. He stood, his heart beating so fast he was sure it would just hop out of his chest.
He knew the sound of those paws. Those paws carried a horrible stench to his nostrils, the stench of blood and fear.
Those were Evergreenpaw’s two least favorite smells.
He ran as fast as his paws could go. Memories flashed through his mind. Terrible memories. Memories he couldn’t forget even if he went to StoneClan territory and smacked his head against the hardest rock he could find.
Falling, falling… Was it him that was falling? No, it was his mentor. The terrible screeches of his older brother’s cries right before he fell to his death echoed through his ears. But certainly this wasn’t happening now? He kept confusing the past with reality. Fogecho was already dead.
Right now he was running from the thing that ruined his life. The reason his mentor, who was also his older brother, was dead. The savage creature who pushed Fogecho off the Great Waterfall.
But Fogecho had still had a chance to live. He had a chance by hanging onto Evergreenpaw’s paw. Evergreenpaw had grasped his brother’s paw as hard as he could, but his mentor pleaded for him to let go. He claimed that the beast would kill them both if he didn’t let him die instead so Evergreenpaw could run away. Let his favorite cat in the world fall and drown to his death.
Fogecho was the one to let go. He told Evergreenpaw it was for the best, and finally managed to fight back the tight grasp his younger brother had on him.
Even though he expected the fall, the light gray shape of Fogecho still screamed while falling. Was it the shock of the feeling of falling from so high what made the yowls come from his mouth? Or did he expect Evergreenpaw to not actually let his brother let go, no matter how hard he tried to fight the grasp?
Only then had Evergreenpaw dove out of his memories and realized he was still running for his life. The cowardly, ginger beast with white paws stained red from the blood of its victims was chasing him, ready to get the prey he was so close to killing the night it shoved a helpless wounded tom cat off a cliff.
Suddenly, Evergreenpaw’s body seemed to freeze. He couldn’t move a whisker, and the predator was catching up.
No, no! He opened his mouth to cry, but the meows didn’t seemed to come out.
And then the fox’s teeth sunk into his flesh, splattering his vision with blood.
Evergreenpaw awoke, his breathe rapid and body shaking.
Nightmare again… He thought, eyes still closed as he sat up. They had been happening ever since Fogecho died… ever since Evergreenpaw was almost killed. The event repeated every night when he fell asleep, or the savage predator that almost killed him would show up to haunt his dreams.
“Did you have a nightmare again?” A young voice squeaked, “Shimmerpaw asked me to check on you.”
Evergreenpaw opened his eyes, only to open his mouth to let out a terrified yowl once again, only this time the voice came out.
Sitting in front of him was Rosekit, the cub of the fox that had tried to kill him.
