I've looked that over and over again- and I think what she meant is that, because Thistleclaw was so eager for power and obviously jealous of Redtail, she didn't want to reveal how many lives she had for fear that Thistleclaw might aim at either Redtail or her. I don't think Thistleclaw cause her to lose those lives- but I think Thistleclaw definitely caused her to hide how many lives she still had.
Which sadly, is kinda ironic, cause she never told Tigerstar how many lives she had either, yet he still had the guts to try to kill her- completely, no matter how many times he had to kill her. I feel like that was also apart of the shock of Tigerstar betraying her- that since Thistleclaw seemed to keep his distance when she never told him, so she probably assumed everyone else would keep their distance too. She probably always thought as long as she kept her lives hidden in general, she'd be safe. But she was wrong.
I do think that Bluestar wasn't completely blind of Tigerstar. After all, if she was so careful of who she told her lives to- and super protective of that information- why tell a random warrior named Firestar, and not a cat everyone assumes she trusted with her life 100%? I do think she trusted him, but she probably never forgot that Thistleclaw trained him, and she said herself that she gave Ravenpaw to Tigerstar on purpose because she knew Tigerstar was the fiercest and probably most aggressive warrior in the clan. And if Tigerstar was really trusted that much- why choose Redtail and Lionheart over him?
But yeah, going back on topic I think what she meant was that- for fear that Thistleclaw would try to harm Redtail or herself- she kept her lives hidden for security.
