If I had to guess, I would say it's because he does the standalone graphic novels. If they plan to continue doing these (not sure if they are) then I can imagine he wouldn't have time to work on both the standalone stories and the graphic novel of the original series.

Another thing could be that the style of the TPB graphic novel looks a little more serious from what I can tell by the cover. Maybe they liked a sharper style to the retelling.
