I was listening to the audiobook of Into the Wild and noticed how graypaw comments that Bluestar usually only trains the kits of deputies. My assumption is that this is just a warriors tradition that was forgotten about over time, but I was curious on if there is an example of this happening somewhere in the warriors universe?!

Yeah, I don't know if that was something they wrote into the book and never made it true or if your audiobook was wrong, but none of Bluestar's apprentices were kits of deputies lol
There is a few examples of this happening with other leaders, though. For example; Firestar mentored Cinderpelt (temporarily) who was Lionheart's daughter
While Ashfur was possessing Bramblestar, he was in a leadership position. And Ashfur had mentored Lionblaze, the son of Crowfeather - who is WindClan's current deputy.
Mistystar mentored Feathertail, whose father is Graystripe (who was temporarily a deputy)
I almost counted Crookedstar but his apprentice, Sedgecreek, isn't actually the daughter of a deputy. How was Ottersplash never a deputy?? Leopardstar was right
Tigertwo mentored Sleekwhisker, whose father was Crowfrost. I genuinely had no idea who Crowfrost was. Who the hell is this dude? He was a modern ShadowClan deputy? Under Rowanstar's leadership? How have I never heard of this guy?

Since Warriors was meant to be a three-book series initially, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a throwaway line that was forgotten about. There's probably an example or two out there but it's not a Clan practice.

Honestly, how many times have we ever seen a leader (like while in the leadership position) mentoring an apprentice? Bluestar with Firepaw is the only one I can think of right now - was she the only instance?

One (Stumpytail) was while he was a warrior, but two of them (Mosspaw & Volewhisper) were while he was a leader. They were too young, but I believe it still counts. Leopardstar training Hawkfrost too Hailstar mentored Blackclaw Leafstar (temporarily) training Sol
