This poll got posted on the official Warrior Cats website yesterday and I thought sharing it on here could be fun. Feel free to also use examples of your favorite names, be they canon (book characters) or fanon (your OCs).
My overall favorites are definitely flowery, elegant ones although I also like/love names from some of the other categories.
Some canon favs from various categories: Fireheart Goldenflower Silverstream Tigerclaw Lionblaze Leafdapple Echosong Poppyfrost Blossomfall Shadowsight Moon Shadow/Tall Shadow/Sun Shadow
Some fanon favs from various categories: Wishpool Dreamcloud Hopelight Sleepfrost Silverclaw Goldenheart Echosun Whispermoon Forestdawn Lakedusk Blizzardhowl Quickstream Rippleshade Scorchbreath Cavesong/Cavelight

I love "cool" ones the most, like names with storm, blizzard, fire, flame, blaze, shadow, lightning, etc. in them.

I kinda like the basic ones the best. I feel like a lot of the “cool/pretty/strong” ones just come across as trying too hard (tbh most people’s OC names fall into this trap, to me). And legacy naming is boring to me.
Names after a specific life event are good in theory, but depending on the suffix they can sound nonsensical, so I end up dislking many of them.
I’ll take the “plain” names like Rainwhisker and Lionheart. I like the simplicity.

I’ll take the “plain” names like Rainwhisker and Lionheart. I like the simplicity. I personally feel like those two examples fall moreso into other categories. Rainwhisker sounds pretty cool as a name and Lionheart has an imposing vibe to me (seeing as there was also a real life king with that name and a lovely song that gets used in this fandom quite a bit). But I understand the sentiment.

But I understand the sentiment. I respectfully disagree. “Plain” to me refers to names with fairly basic prefix and suffix combinations, which included Rainwhisker and Lionheart but also Graystripe, Longtail, Frostfur, Sorreltail, etc. Cool/pretty names (to me) are those that utilize uncommon prefixes/suffixes combinations to create a more unique name, such as Spottedleaf, Lionblaze, Shadowsight, etc. I like cool/pretty names on occasion, sprinkled amongst more plain names, because then they stand out a little more. Especially because cats like that often have pretty/cool names that organically came about by virtue of the prefix. E.g., Silverstream is quite pretty but it feels like a natural suffix choice, and she’s meant to be a romantic character. Same with Dovewing. But these days it feels like the authors have something against the obvious choice in suffix. Like they’re trying too hard to make each name “different” and “unique” by combining uncommon prefixes and suffixes. E.g., Plumstone, Fernsong, Bayshine, Songleap, Finchlight. I don’t like them; they feel forced. I miss when having plain names was the norm and when we got cool/pretty names it felt more organic.

Cats that have pretty/cool names should stand out more among the more plain names, thus, becoming more distinctive among everyone else. If everyone has a very distinctive name, then no one is really special anymore. It kind of takes away from the uniqueness, IMO. Plain names aren't even bad, either.
