Hey! Here’s my thoughts on the third book!
I like that Nightheart thinks of others a lot! Like mental health for Bramblestar, getting honey as medicine for Puddleshine, Sorrelstripe, other cats in ThunderClan.
And obviously and most importantly Sunbeam! I like that he takes into account her feelings and mannerisms. Plus they are able to lean on each other and share their thoughts (for the most part since they keep some worries to themselves because of plot drama).
I like that Nightheart went to ShadowClan to be with Sunbeam! While it was rushed, he felt that he didn’t have a choice. Turmoil and a general wanting to be in a safe space fueled most of it. But I think a major part of that is just Nightheart wanting to be with Sunbeam. I don’t think he’s using her. I think the unsurity from her was that he barely knew her. I like that Sunbeam showed up at the end to be with him in ThunderClan. I think it’s generally the same rushing action (which isn’t bad) but what makes this different to me, is that Nightheart and Sunbeam have known each other a while now.
I hope there’s no betrayal from Sunbeam in the future.
I like that Nightheart has not yelled at Sunbeam at all (yet? who knows with the other books still have yet to be released). Gosh I really hope he won’t in the future. I like the ease of Nightheart and Sunbeam’s relationship. He has laughter in his voice when he climbs a tree looking for honey, which is awesome! Nightheart is also great at reassuring her. And he also apologizes when she is upset with him. Sunbeam is also good at easing his doubts and fears too! She is awesome with offering him comfort.
Another thing: I love how Nightheart is smart and helpful too! And considerate!
1) Nightheart gives Sunbeam space to think (about himself being her mate and joining her clan, the bad situation with her mom).
2) Nightheart comes up with gathering honey for Puddleshine and has Sunbeam help him (which he thanks her for).
3) Nightheart comes up with clever ways to pass Berryheart’s schemes (catching frogs with flies that get attracted by dead animals, saying he passed the getting the rug from the house because of a technicality loophole).
I think Tigerstar was in the right to keep RiverClan from totally collapsing. With no leader and deputy (plus medicine cats who didn’t even know how to help) things kept on getting worse. The cats even fought one another. I think Tigerstar got to the root of the problem and did the best he could to help. At the gathering, he even hammered in the importance of one clan helping another. He was sort of talking like Firestar, Morningstar, Darkstar (how they saw actions).
Horrible that Squirrelflight says impossible for a clan to function if medicine cats don’t talk to StarClan. But that’s a major gripe I have with the series. I don’t think the clans should be so focused on communicating with ancestors and the past. They also shouldn’t have StarClan entangled with the living cats’ futures so much. Too much of the spirits being on the physical plane (same with Dark Forest). I like the giving thanks for food and faith, but not the interfering parts from StarClan. I’ll write a fanfic about it sometime.
Awful of Dovewing and Tigerstar to force Nightheart to interact with his biological family. He didn’t feel ready and was reluctant to do so. At the gathering he felt relief that he could put off seeing Sparkpelt again. He shouldn’t have been forced to go to see ThunderClan cats again. And having it as part of being ready to be ShadowClan permanently is not cool. Just because Dovewing herself had regrets about leaving Ivypool and others, does not mean Nightheart himself had regrets or had to go back and get closure! You don’t always have to confront the past, in order to move on completely!
Plus Bramblestar wasn’t even coherent and sound of mind enough to be present with Nightheart, which hurt Nightheart since he wasn’t expecting that. Not Bramblestar’s fault, but still it weighed on Nightheart afterwards. Still…a good thing that came out of the chapter was that night felt that Sunbeam and ShadowClan were his home.
I get that Nightheart wanted to help Bramblestar and ThunderClan but did he really have to try to be a self-sacrificing cat? Nightheart didn’t have to help Beamblestar. The guy retired anyways, so what was the point? There would have been a new leader anyways. He should have focused on himself like he had been doing in ShadowClan. He totally could’ve joined, without ever looking back. And the whole apologizing to cats in ThunderClan scene is awful. Nightheart saying he sorry to his abusers is just a bad lesson and message altogether.
Disappointing and sad that Nightheart chose to return to ThunderClan. Just because the others say they’ll be better and show it through actions doesn’t mean that they won’t turn on him again later when he doesn’t do or feel what they expect. this kind of toxic behavior. Like Harry Potter books and movies when others would call him a hero then turn in him quickly, it was a continuous cycle I really hope that doesn’t happen to Nightheart.
Plus he shouldn’t have to move back even though he’ll stand up for himself more. If he does have to do that, then the environment still isn’t good enough for him to flourish and be good for him.
I’m so excited for the next books! This arc really is one of my favorites even if I do get critical or upset at some of the character choices. I love Nightheart the most so far!
