(On a cruise and I’m a little bit tipsy, bare with me haha)
Jack looked up from his book at the sound of someone’s voice. He was shocked to see it was the same man who interrupted his questioning. He supposed he should be grateful for that. He closed his book and stood up, extending his hand, “Yes, it’s good to see you too,” he greeted, a tinge of nervousness in his voice. It’s been a long time since he had applied for a job.

(You’re fine! I was just about to get off the school bus when I wrote mine lol)
Javalle took the man’s extended hand as a gesture to shake it, which he gratefully did. Noting the apprehensive tone in his voice, Javalle wondered if his client was worried if his leg injury was going to hinder any aspect of his work. He seemed to be healing fast; he couldn’t scent any signs of infection anymore, but he knew it was far from completely recovered. Perhaps his wolf-like abilities were beginning to take hold? Well, he may as well ask him it now.
“How is your leg doing? I see that you’re still having trouble, but I’m sure the library has everything provided to accommodate your needs. If not, I can certainly make arrangements to help in any way. If you’re up to it, could you come with me over to the counters? I’d like to show you how to organize the books.”

(Napped it off! All good to go!)
A bit of relief washed over him. They had accommodation for him. “The leg‘a still stiff, but not as bad as before. A friend recommended exercises for me and it’s been helping,” Jack said, not even bothered by the fact that the stranger knew about his injury. He probably over heard or read about the incident. “Honestly, anything you have for me that won’t… you know… be hard on my leg, I’m willing to do.”

Javalle listened intently to the applicant’s words, then nodded slowly in contemplation. “Well, I’m glad those exercises have been working well for you.” He made his way to the counters where he did the majority of his work and pulled up a chair for Jack to sit down. He continued on, explaining what specific work he needed to complete. “Luckily, the job you’re doing won’t require too much movement on your part. All we ask is that you organize books by putting them on this rack”, he motioned towards the aforementioned rack and gave it a nudge.
“What you need to do is scan the barcodes like so.” He demonstrated by flipping a random book from the rack on its back cover and picked up a scanner to read it. “Then, it’ll read on this computer right here. The computers here are a bit dated and finicky, so let me know if an error message pulls up. After you finish that, the book will be placed on this rack. Books are organized by the author’s last name, but if for some reason two books have the same last name, please alphabetize them by the title instead. Do you understand everything so far?”
Javalle didn’t realize how quickly he was talking; since he’s been working here for a little over half a year everything came naturally to him. He was just relived by the fact at least someone was willing to work with him, and being in a teaching position gave them a new opportunity to pass knowledge onto someone else for a change.

Despite how quickly the other man spoke, Jack was able to understand what he needed to do and indicated to him as such. Scan and sort the books. Easy enough. It wasn’t the most exciting job in the world, but it was simple and a good start toward something better in the future. There was however, one question he had on his mind. One that he had to prepare for, in case the worst did indeed happened. At least judging by the strong feline scent that came from the man, he didn’t have to tip-toe around it so he didn’t sound insane.
”You’ve mentioned before that this place offers accommodation,” he began, clearing his throat nervously, “Does it also offer… um… special accommodation?”
Don’t make me say it. Please don’t make me say it…

Please don’t make me say it…Javalle peeked around as the other man asked his question. At once he knew what he meant since he asked the same thing when he was first applying to the library. It was good to know someone had the same concerns as him, especially as a fellow shifter, but Javalle wanted to make sure no one was unexpectedly watching. The library was supposed to be empty to make it easier for interviews, anyways. Once he made sure the coast was clear, Javalle went on in a hushed tone. “ The most that we can offer is to take time off for sick days, but I’ll talk to the staff about your…”, he paused for a second to catch himself before he gave too much away, “…condition and see if we can give you something a little more, though I’m not sure we can do much. I will recommend taking the morning shift with me, since the afternoon schedule doesn’t get off until around dinnertime, and I don’t think that’d be ideal for you. I’ll do what I can.” He waved his hand in a vague gesture. Javalle assumed that what he was saying wasn’t very reassuring, but it was the truth. He glanced at the clock on the counter. Only five minutes before the library opens. We’d better wrap up soon.

Jack nodded along. Morning shifts would make the most sense as would taking the next day after…everything off. Good to see that he was covered. “If that’s what you can do, that’s more than enough and if you’ll have me, I’ll take the job.”

Javalle gave half a smile and nodded. “Sure thing. It’ll take a couple of days to talk everything over with the other staff, but once we get word and have everything situated, we could begin working. I doubt anyone would dismiss you from working this job.”
Or, at least I hope so…
He didn’t dare utter his thoughts out loud. There was no issue for him to take a couple sick days off, especially due to his leg, but if this man used them incessantly, would anyone else take notice? Could suspicions ripple across the library that a pair of were-creatures were working at the very heart of them? Javalle shook his head as he tried to settle his anxieties. He decided to switch the topic to quell the raising storm in his mind.
“By the way, um, did I ever get your name? Your applicant form lists you as Jack Rivers and I want to make sure I’m not confusing you for someone else.” How unprofessional. That should’ve been the first thing he asked. He hoped this “Jack” didn’t mind the sudden change in discussion.

“No you’re right, it’s ‘Jack’, said said with a small chuckle in his voice, “People always think it’s ‘John’ when I fill out things.” He was honestly glad for the change of topic, so he wasn’t bothered. Then the same worry overcame him without him knowing. Would it be suspicious if he regularly called off days around the same time each month? Surely there were enough like them that most employers wouldn’t bat an eye. His mind went to Adeline. Would she start to wonder? No… He can’t spiral into those thoughts again.

Seeing that Jack’s response warranted a chuckle from him, Javalle cracked a much more genuine smile. “Well, it’s nice to meet you, Jack. I’m sure we’ll be seeing each other soon.” He took another glance at the clock; work would be starting up soon. He should close things off, he just hoped Jack wasn’t feeling rushed.
“How about you meet me here again, at the same time, in three days? I’ll let you know if you got the job, and we can plan things from there. I look forward to working with you.” He replied, meaning it. He would advocate as much as he can to get Jack on track, and especially since he was new to shifting, perhaps he could talk things over in secret one day? Well, they can discuss later. He could already see people lined up by the front door.
”My shift’s starting up now, so I think now would be a good time to end things off. Sorry if things were a bit rushed today, normally I’m a bit more composed than this.” Came the rushed response. He still couldn’t shake off the paranoia he felt walking in this morning and was ashamed with himself for running late… He just hoped he wouldn’t have another interaction with that officer anytime soon.

“No you’re fine, three days is fine,” Jack said, getting up from his seat with his books, “It’s enough time for… that… to happen.”
I just really hope I’m lucky…
Jack extended his hand once more for a final handshake goodbye, still wanting to be professional. At least he had someone who could vouch for him, one who seemed more experienced with changing if we truly was unlucky. He never felt such dread before. It was almost unbearable.
(What do we think guys? Should we start now or wait until tomorrow?)
