I get what the Erins are trying to do, break down any gender barriers in terms of naming. But, the way they are doing it isn't the right way. I'm fine with Stone Song and Podlight being toms, however it's only because you have a masculine sounding prefix and a more feminine sounding suffix. It balances it out. But Fernsong? Puddleshine? They are trying too hard to bring on gender equality or whatever. That's like naming your male child Meriwether Rose. Meriwether has been used for boys/males before, but it's mostly seen as a female name. Giving your child the middle name of rose only makes things worse. Of course, that's at least they way I interpret it.

In my opinion, Puddleshine is 100% work of harpercollins. Kate said they were choosing the names for young cats or something on BlogClan. Meh.

SPOILERS
That is true, I did forget she mentioned that. Although I don't like the name Sparkfire because it's redundant. And while I like using -pelt, Sparkpelt just seems a little off to me. I'd like if Spark was named after Sandstorm getting the name Sparkstorm. It would've been naming both Alderpaw and Sparkpaw after Squirrelflight's parents. Honestly, it seems Sandstorm has gotten the short end of the stick Iin terms of most things. Her death, in my opinion at least, was terrible, Firestar seems more important than her and while both Alderpaw and Sparkpaw could've gotten names after Firestar, she got nothing of the sort. I would've loved if Alderheart was named after Sandstorm like Alderstorm. He seemed to have a connection to her from what I've heard and it would've been interesting. But, nope. Anyway, sorry for that rambling.

Personally I wouldve loved if Sparkpaws name was Firepaw. Since she looks like Firestar so much. It would be nice. And her name wouldve been Firestorm, after Sandstorm.
Now that I think about it it sounds like good idea for a fanfic.

Okay, but again I'm so sorry about that!
Anyway, I don't hate the name Sparkfire, but as I stated above it sounds redundant. It's like naming a kit Snowfrost or Bluesky, though that's what I think personally. Though I do like the suffix -fire, something like Alderfire would've been cool. Anyway, Firestorm is an awesome name and would've been a cool idea and way to combine Firestar's and Sandstorm's name. If they didn't want to go to the fire rout, another option would be Blazepaw, Sunpaw, Lightningpaw or Flamepaw for Sparkpaw.

People seem to bring up names like Nightmoon and Blueskt all the time when it comes to Sparkfire as a name. It makes me wonder why. To me the names sound normal.

Well, yes, Bluesky and Snowfrost are normal and I like the name Bluesky, but, to me at least, that's like naming someone Humanboy or Femalewoman.

Puddleshine doesn't bother me. I imagine the name like sunshine reflecting off a puddle.

I think it was meant to be like he's a light of hope in dark times, thus Puddleshine
I sincerely doubt that gender had anything to do with it.
