Fernpaw medicine cat den entrance — accompanied by: Pebblepool, Dimstar & The Night Guards Fernpaw listened intently to Pebblepool as she murmured an explanation. Her mentor did have a good point, one she hadn't thought of herself. Suffering was not necessary if one was to live through painful injuries. After all, Hollyheart had a limb that was sickeningly extended. If she had survived her many injuries, she would have never been the same. It was better for her to be with StarClan than live in agony for the rest of her life. She had served her clan well enough.
"I understand now. I think I will celebrate Hollyheart's life then. It's sad that she passed away, but maybe it is better for her to be with StarClan. Suffering forever would have been awful. No cat deserves to suffer, but I guess we don't choose that," she whispered softly, dipping her head solemnly.
The feeling of her blue-grey mentor's tail on her shoulder comforted Fernpaw. She let out a sigh of relief after the awkward silence. As soon as Dimstar padded away, she wondered who or what the tabby was looking for. Shrikeswoop maybe? she thought, tipping her head to one side. She suddenly noticed Frostfalcon, who was standing among the injured. Isn't that Pebblepool's sister? She must be injured too.
The spotted tabby almost jumped out of her fur when Pebblepool nudged her. "I'm coming!" she mewed, following the medicine cat.
Without thinking, Fernpaw blurted out, "I think I saw Frostfalcon, she must be injured too. She's your sister, right?"

( thank you! ;w; she definitely is and loves to ask questions.
I think it will, as long as Frost opens to Pebble. She'll be injured enough to stay in the den, so she really won't be doing much lol
it was o: best vacation I've had in Europe this year for sure. I want to see the south of Italy or Rome & Florence next. )

Pebblepool »
with fernpaw, frostfalcon - Sand icetail & bearpaw
Pebblepool stood there a moment longer as she listened to Fernpaw’s words. She learns quickly, the medicine cat thought to herself, pride swelling inside her chest. Perhaps that was one reason for why StarClan had accepted the young spotted tabby as Pebblepool’s successor one day. Not only did Fernpaw have a way with herbs, but she was quick to absorb new information and hold on to that. Not only would she make the Clan proud, but their ancestors as well. There would be no need to worry about the Clan when Pebblepool’s time to join the stars came. TheliaClan would be in good paws.
For a brief moment the blue-gray molly wondered if this sense of pride was how Smokedapple felt about her. Her mentor had never withheld compliments, and Pebblepool had known that her mentor was proud of her, but she had never known how that pride felt until now. This made the molly’s whiskers twitch ever so slightly - she wasn’t as emotionless as some liked to believe.
Speaking of emotions and some cats…
Pebblepool’s ears perked, interest flashing in the depths of her eyes when Fernpaw mentioned Frostfalcon. Why she hadn’t thought about her littermate any was beyond her; actually, it was no surprise that the medicine cat had thought nothing of her Night Guard sibling. The two had never really been that close, separated even more when Frostfalcon passed her Night Guard apprentice interview and Pebblepool went to train under Smokedapple. Their paths simply did not cross very often, only on the rare occasion that Frostfalcon ended up injured, which wasn’t all that often, and now seeing the familiar lithe form of her littermate had Pebblepool’s eyes narrowing. ”She is. My littermate,” she meowed briskly. If Frostfalcon was willing to report to the medicine cat den then something surely had to be wrong - she wouldn’t come to be treated if all she had was a few scrapes and bruises. Not that any of the Night Guard would, but Frostfalcon especially.
Pebblepool halted only when she stood in front of the Night Guards who were there to be looked over. Her still narrowed gaze glanced across the cats. Icetail, Bearpaw, Frostfalcon… that’s where her gaze stopped regardless on if another cat sat to the other side of Pebblepool’s littermate. ”Who is the most injured? And don’t try to hide any injuries. Fernpaw and I will find them soon enough, so it’s best to get it over with now,” she told the guards, silent now as she waited for them to speak up. She assumed Icetail would be the last cat she checked over, but there were still a few others that needed to be looked over, so Pebblepool needed to get this triage over with quickly so she could establish who needed her first.
[ kept the injured cats a little vague so if you wanted to add any more of your guards you're more than welcome to :> poor frost, but it'll be interesting to see what happens, if anything, between her and pebble. it'll certainly be something to role-play out between the two before frost is given the all clear i love that! Italy is such a beautiful country so im glad you got to enjoy yourself there. Florence was my favorite part when I visited; Rome was cool too, but definitely very geared toward tourists ]

Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool, Frostfalcon, Icetail & Bearpaw Fernpaw stood a bit taller next to Pebblepool, although it didn't do her much good. She still looked small and shorter than her mentor. To be fair, she was only an apprentice. In her time with Pebblepool, she always felt appreciated by her. She had complimented her and even gave her a nickname, one that she was quite fond of. There was no reason for Fernpaw to feel underappreciated.
She realized she didn't know anything Pebblepool's mentor. She was too young to have known the former medicine cat. Perplexed, she wondered if the blue-grey she-cat liked her mentor and what kind of relationship they had. Was it like Fernpaw's with Pebblepool? Or maybe it was something different? She didn't have enough time to interrogate the medicine cat, but she would surely get to it later.
As soon as Pebblepool responded to her question, Fernpaw's pale amber eyes fixated on Frostfalcon. "I thought so," she murmured quickly.
She was quite lithe yet her pelt had some bloodstains and new deep scars. It was difficult to see her limbs from where Fernpaw was at. Is she still bleeding? the apprentice thought, eyeing her from afar. Next to her sat Oakshade, who appeared bloodied. Hopefully Frostfalcon nor Oakshade would not notice her amber gaze. Fernpaw couldn't remember the last time she had seen Frostfalcon. She knew the Night Guard she-cat kept mostly to herself and those in the Night Guard. She was interested by the blue-grey she-cat, completely curious about why she was here. Hopefully she didn't sustain injuries like Hollyheart.
Frostpaw considered herself to be close with Leopardpaw, her littermate. Although they didn't get to train together, she remembered their times in the nursery quite fondly. She hoped he hadn't seen the gruesome scene with Hollyheart even though he was a warrior apprentice. She could only imagine how Icetail and Bearpaw were doing too.
Frostfalcon let out an exasperated sigh. "Me," she meowed immediately once her littermate dictated the Night Guards to speak up. If the others weren't going to speak up, then she would. "I'm not as injured as Hollyheart is... er, was. But I think I might have sprained something. I've got plenty of open scars that need to be taken care of."
The blue-grey she-cat paused, looking at Icetail, Oakshade, and Bearpaw. It seemed likely that one of them should go before her. Truthfully, she did not want to be the second cat to face the medicine cat. She would rather go last and leave the den as soon as possible. "Icetail, Bearpaw, and Oakshade. If any of you want to go in ahead of me, feel free. I can wait," she added quickly.
[ added Oakshade as one that's injured, but it's more of a minor injury. he'll still end up dying though, rip. I feel for pebble, she's got a crappy sister who's standoffish lol. I'd love to role-play that out! Rome seems very touristic. Milan was another place that I thought of going, but my friend went with her bf and it was horrible. glad I didn't go there. ]

Pebblepool »
with fernpaw, frostfalcon, oakshade - Sand icetail & bearpaw
Frostfalcon, Oakshade, Icetail, Bearpaw… While there were only four cats, it was still a lot, especially when adding Hollyheart into the equation. Five cats out of seven Night Guards was a significantly large percentage. Pebblepool narrowed her eyes even more, pupils nothing more than thin slits. Depending on how bad the injuries were on these cats could mean that there would be only three able-bodied Night Guards to carry out duties for the next few nights, or even longer if injuries were bad enough. Owlmask, Berrystorm, and Sleetgaze were capable cats, but could they really do all the necessary tasks without pushing themselves too far? Though it was more than likely that Icetail would be able to continue with his duties; he was scratched up and bruised, but from earlier interactions the confident, ambitious tom only had minor injuries that would need to be checked on a daily basis, but it was nothing that would hinder him from patrolling as usual. As for the others…
Oakshade was bloodstained, though from his own blood or from some other cats’ - or something else entirely - was to be determined. From what Pebblepool could observe he did not seem to be bleeding anymore, all his gore now dried and stuck to his pelt. That was a good sign. If his body could heal itself and scab over the wounds on its own then all Oakshade would need would be a good cleaning and some poultices. Perhaps he would be like Icetail, injured but still able to serve under the orders that he report to the medicine den at least once daily.
Looking away from him allowed Pebblepool to observe the state Bearpaw was in. The young black molly was putting on a brave face, yet it was clear to Pebblepool’s trained eyes that Bearpaw was in pain. Her stance was stiff and her breathing was somewhat unbalanced, a sign that she was experiencing some mild shock. The left side of Bearpaw’s face was bloodied, her eye swollen shut and her ear torn and ragged; blood still oozed from some of her wounds in slow, languid droplets. She would have to be tended to soon.
And then there was Frostfalcon. Much like Bearpaw she was putting on a brave face, but Pebblepool could clearly see that she was heavily wounded. Not only did she have a sprain, perhaps even a fracture, but her pelt was smeared with blood, torn and tattered, gashed with new wounds and gored by old ones reopening. ”I’ll be tending to you first, Frostfalcon,” the medicine cat mewed in a no-nonsense manner. ”If your sprain is worse than what you say I’d like to treat it before the bone sets incorrectly, and those wounds look deep. Fernpaw.” She turned to her apprentice before Frostfalcon could say anything to decline going first. ”Look over Bearpaw and treat her wounds. If you run into any issues or have any questions, come get me.” She trusted Fernpaw enough to allow her to look over the other apprentice, and besides, how was Fernpaw supposed to get any experience if she was always being told what to do rather than deciding a course of action for herself? One day Pebblepool would no longer be around to do that and every choice would have to be made by Fernpaw herself.
The medicine cat gestured for Frostfalcon to follow her. ”Oakshade, you’ll be next, then you, Icetail,” she called over her shoulder before slipping into the den. She made sure to station herself some distance from Hollyheart’s body, not wanting her patients to get a clear view of their former denmate. The Guards had enough trauma already as it was.
Bearpaw »
with fernpaw, frostfalcon, oakshade - Sand icetail & pebblepool
It was so hard not to tremble, but the longer Bearpaw sat there the more her body wanted to shake. So much had happened last night that Bearpaw wasn’t even sure she could remember it all; the night had started like any typical night. She had gone out with the Night Guards, patrolling down the southern edge of the territory. Nothing had been out of the ordinary until some time before dawn. That was when everything became a blur and all the apprentice could remember was the blood-chilling screams of something unnatural mixed with the shrill cries of her patrolmates. That was the first time Bearpaw had ever experienced something like that, all the other patrols she had been apart of going smoothly save for some odd occurrences here and there. But last night…last night had been something entirely different for the young molly. But this was what she had signed up for. Being a Night Guard had been her dream ever since she could remember. Honeystream had once tried talking her out of trying out for an apprentice spot, telling Bearpaw that she already had her littermate as a guard, but Bearpaw had forged onward, promising both of her mothers that she would make the Clan proud and protect it from everything that stalked the woods at night.
That determination wasn’t dampened after all this, but she was rightfully shaken up. Even now her wounds burned, and with each beat of her fluttering heart she could feel a stabbing pain just above her left eye. Warmth trickled from the same area, letting Bearpaw know that she was still bleeding from whatever wound she had received.
Faintly she heard her name, causing her to perk up, swaying on her paws momentarily. ”Y-yes?” She stammered, squinting with her one good eye to get a look at Pebblepool and Fernpaw. ”I’m fi-fine!” Yet again she stammered. It was hard to keep her voice steady and her throat felt dry, but she didn’t want to worry the medicine cat and her apprentice too much. Plus, she had to be brave. It’s what any Night Guard would do.
She heard her name being mentioned alongside Fernpaw’s. The dark-furred apprentice shuffled in her spot until she had a view of the medicine cat apprentice. Bearpaw wasn’t going to admit aloud that moving her head just that much caused her to feel dizzy. ”Mornin’, Fernpaw! I’m fine,” she repeated herself, attempting a purr but her throat was too scratchy for such a sound right now. ”All good…good. S’all…all fine.” Okay, that was pathetic. Even she heard the slurring in her words. Bearpaw fell silent, the dizziness in her head turning to pain. Maybe she wasn’t as fine as she was trying to claim, but she had to be brave. Night Guards dealt with worse, and she wanted to be the best Night Guard the Clan had ever witnessed.
[ man poor Oak. he won't be getting a break anytime soon nahhh, don't feel bad for Pebble. She's also emotionally detached so I feel like it was a mutual distancing between the two. Fern is probably the first cat that pebble's felt an attachment to. oof, that really sucks, but im glad you didn't go there then. sounds like it could have been a waste of time there sadly, but i guess every place in the world has cities that aren't actually worth visiting ]

Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool, Frostfalcon, Oakshade, Icetail & Bearpaw | (Feathertalon ) Noticing that the line of Night Guard cats was bigger than Fernpaw realized, her amber gaze led to Bearpaw, who looked shocked. She didn't want to imagine what Bearpaw had seen or experienced. It was dreadful that it led to Hollyheart's death. If Hollyheart had died before reaching camp on Icetail's back, that meant Bearpaw saw and heard every bit of it. It appeared she was still bleeding from her head and had a torn ear. She wasn't in any shape to patrol again, at least not until Pebblepool gave her verdict.
Oakshade, on the other paw, was also injured; his bloodstained pelt was prominent. Fernpaw couldn't see what other injuries he had. As for Icetail, he was lucky to have brought Hollyheart back and only have minor injuries. Frostfalcon's injuriees were another issue, especially if she had a sprained or broken limb. Fernpaw hoped Pebblepool would be able to help her littermate, even if they weren't close.
Hearing her name, the silver tabby's ears flicked towards her mentor. She glanced at the medicine cat, then her patient, Bearpaw. She refrained from asking Pebblepool a question and instead nodded. "I can do it, Pebblepool!" she mewed confidently. If she needed the blue-grey molly's help, she would certainly ask for it.
Fernpaw padded over to Bearpaw, observing her injuries. She was repeating and slurring her words. The apprentice knew Bearpaw was not okay. "Hiya Bearpaw," she greeted, tail flicking behind her eagerly. "Do you have any pain? I can see you're still bleeding. Come with me, I can check your injuries inside the medicine cat's den."
Instead of padding ahead of the brown black she-cat, she chose to wait. She wanted if Bearpaw was stable on her paws when walking. She had endured a lot of pain. "Do you need help walking to the den?" she quickly asked. "You can lean on me for support if you want." Frostfalcon medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool, Icetail, Oakshade, Fernpaw & Bearpaw To say the least, Frostfalcon was not content as her fellow Night Guards decided to wait for treatment. Except for Bearpaw, of course, as she was horribly shaken up and injured. She glanced at her patrolmates, feeling a tinge of concern. She didn't care much about her own injuries, but deep down, she knew they needed to be tended to.
With five of the seven Night Guards injured or deceased, the blue-grey she-cat wondered how patrolling would be from now on. Berrystorm, Sleetgaze, and Owlmask could not do it with such a small group. Maybe Icetail and Oakshade would be fine, but what about Bearpaw? Was she too traumatized to set foot in the night again? She hoped not, though trauma came with their duty. It wasn't a gift, it was misery. Yet she still patrolled every night despite the trauma. It was her choice to join the Night Guard and the responsibility to uphold it.
Hearing her littermate's voice brought her back to reality. Her brave face wasn't a factor anymore, considering her fur was tattered, bloodied, and her old wounds were ripped open. If anything, she looked like a bloody mess. "Fine by me," Frostfalcon mewed to Pebblepool, trying to ignore the pain in her limb.
As her sister beckoned her to follow, she limped after her slowly. The pain was worse when she moved as the pulsation and throbbing became agonizing. Once she entered the medicine cat den, all she could think of was Hollyheart. She didn't deserve to die that way, Frostfalcon thought.
"I'll lie down if that's okay with you," the blue-grey feline meowed, groaning in pain when she pushed herself down to the floor. That was a terrible idea, Frostfalcon thought before wincing. "Do you need me to do anything? Or am I supposed to sit here like I'm helpless?" [ Oak's gonna suffer unfortunately :-( Fern is honored for that, she really likes Pebble as her mentor <3 meanwhile Frost may not feel guilty for the distancing just yet. yeah, I'm glad I didn't go either. like the gallery in Milan looks cool (based on photos I've seen from my friend & online), but I don't know what else I'd want to see in Milan since it's all shops. sadly, yeah, not every country has a place worth visiting. ]

Bearpaw »
with fernpaw, frostfalcon, oakshade - Sand icetail & pebblepool
The walk back to camp hadn’t been that hard. Sure, Bearpaw’s nerves had been shot and her paws had been unsteady - luckily Oakshade had been at his apprentice’s side on the way back home - but she had made it back on her own paws just fine. Perhaps that had been the adrenaline coursing through her. Adrenaline could make cats do some pretty impressive, and sometimes crazy, things, and now Bearpaw was back in camp, back in a safe environment, and the adrenaline was trickling away from her. Exhaustion now clung to her like a second pelt and she felt increasingly light headed that she wasn’t even sure if she could stand on her own. A part of her still didn’t want to look weak, but the rational side of her knew that there was no way she was getting into the medicine den without Fernpaw.
The medicine cat apprentice had to have recognized that already. This was only confirmed when Fernpaw asked if Bearpaw needed assistance in making it to the den. The fluffy molly shakily pushed herself up onto her paws, pressing her larger frame against Fernpaw. ”Thank you,” she breathed, not knowing just how relieving it was to have the help from another cat until now. ”Head hurts, hurts. A lot.” Adrenaline had masked the pain on the way back to camp, but with each passing second the pressure against the side of her face continued to build, throbbing sharply. The rest of her body felt fine, perhaps a little sore and wobbly, but nothing like how her face felt. If she could just focus on something other than her head then she’d be fine.
”Are you gonna have to-have to put cobweb on m-my face?” Bearpaw asked, suddenly interested in what the healing procedures would be like. This would only be the third time she had been treated that she could remember, one as a kit when she had developed a cough and Beesnap took her to see Pebblepool, and then another time as a kit, right before becoming an apprentice, when a claw had got caught in a moss ball before tossing it, the force of it tearing the claw. Now that had been painful, the most painful experience Bearpaw had ever thought she’d deal with, yet here she was now. ”How sticky…is cobweb?” The apprentice inquired, both curious but also not wanting to fall into an odd silence, either.
Pebblepool »
Even if it didn’t look like Pebblepool was keeping an eye on her littermate, the medicine cat was casting quick glances toward her, and alongside the subtle noises that were coming from Frostfalcon, it was easy for the medicine cat to deduce that her sibling was in a significant amount of pain. Cats by nature wanted to hide their injuries and the amount of harm that happened to them, and it was always the warriors or the guards that did even more to hide their wounds. Frostfalcon was no exception.
By the time Frostfalcon had suggested lying down, Pebblepool had already grabbed one of the premade poultices she and Fernpaw had made even before the patrol had returned to camp; she had also grabbed a wet moss ball, knowing that Frostfalcon’s injuries would need to be cleaned. She padded back to her littermate, easily hearing the groan of pain that escaped from the Night Guard warrior. Pebblepool’s tail twitched. Her littermate was in a lot of pain. It wasn’t even the deep wounds that worried her the most, it was the leg. Wounds could heal, and so could bones, but if the bone was too heavily injured then Frostfalcon may never be able to go back to her full duties.
Pebblepool kept all this to herself for now. She sat down beside the other molly, carefully placing the oak leaf down nearby. ”You sit here while I wash your wounds. Tell me if anything hurts more than it already does.” Her voice was level with only a hint of a demand. She was simply a healer talking to her patient. There was no warmth in her words that one might expect between a sibling tending to an injured sibling. Though none of this was surprising. The two sisters had never been all that close.
Without another word Pebblepool began dabbing the moss ball against Frostfalcon’s pelt, careful when cleaning the open wounds. If she was too rough then the damage could become worse, but too soft and she wouldn’t clean the area effectively. It was a delicate balance, but she had enough confidence in herself, and experience, to get the job done. All the while she kept one eye on her patient for any hints of extreme discomfort or added pain.
[ poor dude, but unfortunately cats must die for the plot ;c Honestly I’m loving the relationship these two have. Pebble’s so fond of Fern, yet when she’s dealing with Frost she’s distant and not so warm. We love some good differing dynamics I get that, but maybe you’ll get to see the gallery and then go and do something else somewhere else o: also, i'm gonna be busy with some stuff so i may not get to reply in the next few days, but i will get to it whenever i can uwu ]

[ the sacrificial lamb ;-( Pebble and Fern get along very well! Whereas Frost is like withdrawn and tends to keep her distance from Pebble. I'm in love with Bearpaw right now, omg. take your time! I may be slow with responding. ] Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Bearpaw, Pebblepool, Frostfalcon, Icetail & Oakshade Fernpaw was slightly surprised when Bearpaw accepted her help as she didn't know how the apprentice would react. She was trembling which she could feel once she pressed her larger frame against hers. She made sure that Bearpaw felt supported by her small frame. She was not built for physicality unlike the Night Guard apprentice. The grey spotted tabby knew she had to get the brown black she-cat inside and on her own. Asking for Pebblepool for help was not going to be an answer. One day she would do all of these duties on her own. There was always time to try like the present.
Grinning, Fernpaw slowly padded with Bearpaw towards the entrance of the den. She wanted to see how the other apprentice moved in case she had any other injuries. "You're welcome!" she mewed cheerfully, listening to Bearpaw as she explained her head pain. "I can help with that. Do you remember if you hit your head? If you don't, that's okay."
The spotted tabby could only deduce what Bearpaw's head pain could be from. If she had been hit accidentally by Hollyheart, maybe that could explain the injury. Still unsure, Fernpaw wished to speculate and continued padding ahead carefully. They were now inside the medicine cat den where Pebblepool was tending to Frostfalcon.
When she heard Bearpaw's question about cobwebs, she perked up. "Yes, I will put one on your face with a poultice. It doesn't hurt, I promise! It may feel a little sticky," she explained before continuing.
Fernpaw tapped her tail on the brown black apprentice's shoulder. She still stood by Bearpaw for support as she wanted to make sure she sat down properly. "You can sit down in that nest. Be careful!" she added, flicking her tail towards a moss nest with a few bird feathers. "I have to clean your wounds first before I put the cobweb and poultice on it."
(tags: Feathertalon ) Frostfalcon medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool Frostfalcon didn't think to keep an eye on Pebblepool. She knew her littermate was a great healer, no doubt about that. Although they were not close, she would have to trust her to take care of her wounds. The blue-grey feline glanced at Fernpaw and Bearpaw, noticing that the apprentice was shaking. She felt for Bearpaw and she could only imagine how Oakshade was reacting. Bearpaw was his apprentice and he had led her into camp along with Frostfalcon. She hoped the tom didn't feel guilty for actions he could not control, but Oakshade was... well, Oakshade.
Noticing how fast the blue-grey medicine cat worked was interesting to the Night Guard she-cat. She had already organized her workspace with a poultice on an oak leaf and a wet moss ball. Frostfalcon winced through another groan, trying to keep quiet. If she hears me in pain, I'll never hear the end of it. If I have to lie, I'll lie, she thought, eyeing her sibling as she sat down next to her.
Oddly enough, it was difficult for her to hide the sounds of her pain. Her leg throbbed with discomfort as if it was pulsating. It was like she could feel her heartbeat through it which was unusual. Frostfalcon had her times in the medicine cat's den before, but none ever amounted to an injury this painful. Her old and new wounds that were open didn't matter much, at least to her. Her leg was the biggest worry and one she didn't want to admit to Pebblepool.
"Of course," the blue-grey she-cat replied curtly, trying not to strain her injured leg. She didn't expect the medicine cat to treat her warmly, but expected to be treated like any other patient. It was well known between her and Pebblepool that they were not close and they never would be. As Frostfalcon felt Pebblepool beginning to dab the wet moss ball at her open wounds, she grimaced as she knew how scarred up her flanks were. Even her entire body. Is it really supposed to hurt this much? she wondered, gaze moving to her leg again.
"How bad are my scars and my leg?" she grumbled. Not long after, she moaned in pain. "Sorry. It's just... a bit painful, but not too painful. I could be in worse shape, right? Hopefully I can get back to my duties soon."

[ I’ll have my reply up tonight or tomorrow! Sorry I’ve been slow with them lately, I’ve been busy and next week I’ll be even busier o; I’m glad you like Bear! I really wanted to have a night guard cat that was friendly and bubbly since I assumed most night guards would be sorta gruff and stand offish. She’s fun so far and I can’t wait to see where her character takes her ]

Bearpaw »
It was a little awkward having Fernpaw escort her, and not in the “I’m a Night Guard and shouldn’t have to have another cat help me” way. It was awkward in the fact that Bearpaw was still wavering on her paws even with the gray tabby helping, and she was much larger than Fernpaw was in both stature and fluff. If her name had any indication it was no surprise that she was a large cat; even as a kit Bearpaw had been big, easily towering over any of her denmates. It didn’t bother the dark furred molly in the slightest, but right now it was odd relying on a smaller feline, but Bearpaw kept those thoughts for herself. She was just grateful that Fernpaw was helping her to begin with. While she was unsteady on her paws, most of her injuries were along her face. Something had happened to her head during the attack, something hard had hit her…or had she run into something? Bearpaw couldn’t remember. Something had happened to her, though, a sharp pain, a blinding light, shrieks and snarls… No, we won’t think about that. Not only could she not remember a good chunk of what happened, she also didn’t want to reminisce on such a tragic event.
It was a surprise to Bearpaw when she noticed the change in scenery. One minute they were outside in the main camp area and then the next they were inside the medicine cat den. The molly held back a flinch of surprise. When had they made it inside the den? Bearpaw recalled limping alongside Fernpaw, but had they really walked that far? This wasn’t a dream, either, the strong scents of herbs clinging onto her nose told her that loud and clear. Still, she couldn’t remember walking inside the den. Despite a foggy memory she was still able to process what Fernpaw was saying - at least most of the time she could. A few words got away from Bearpaw, but she was able to piece together the meaning of the other apprentice’s questions. ”I…” Bearpaw began, eyes narrowing, head pulsing hotly as if it were trying to help her remember but simply couldn’t. A wave of disappointment washed over her. ”Not sure. Lots of-lots of…” Oh, what was the word she was looking for? Words had never been a problem for her before. Bearpaw was often told to stop babbling because she could get carried away and never shut up. It wasn’t becoming of a cat in her rank to be so chatty and loud, Bearpaw was aware of that, but she loved to talk! She loved to tell her Clanmates everything and loved spending time with them and socializing. She also loved being a part of the Night Guard, though she did have to admit pretty much all of them were of the no nonsense, strong and silent sorts. It was kind of dull, so Bearpaw decided she’d be the one to add a little splash of color to them all.
What had she been thinking about before all that? Her bobbed tail twitched in exasperation. She could be all over the place at times but she had never had trouble concentrating on what she wanted to say. Ugh, this injury was probably worse than she had anticipated.
With a huff she sat down, wobbling for a moment until she regained a semblance of balance. Round copper eyes looked at Fernpaw, silently asking for comfort and help. ”Still can’t remember,” she muttered with a shake of head that only caused more throbbing to pulse throughout her face. She inhaled sharply. ”H-hurts. Kinda itchy-itchy, too.” The urge to scratch at her ear was strong now, but it was already hard to keep herself steady on all four paws, let alone three. ”I don’t mind,” she drew in a breath of air, breaking her words apart, ”sticky. Just curious. Are the others-are the others okay?” Bearpaw’s thoughts flashed to Hollyheart. She knew that the ginger molly was now in StarClan, but how was Frostfalcon? How was Oakshade? Her mentor had seemed rather beat up, but he had also helped her back to camp so surely he wasn’t that bad. Or so she hoped, and hopefully Fernpaw would have an answer.
Pebblepool »
The wounds were washing away well. Pebblepool breathed out a sigh of relief against the moss she held in her jaws. Even if Frostfalcon was just another patient in her eyes she always welcomed the chance that wounds would clean nicely. Every now and then an injury would start bleeding, but it was always a trickle, nothing more than a few drops. Pebblepool knew once she left them alone for a few minutes the bleeding would stop by itself. Even still, lots of cobwebs would be covering her sister’s pelt for some time.
Twitching fur and wincing muscles under the moss ball gave Frostfalcon’s pain away. Pebblepool was certain her littermate did not want to display her discomfort, and yet the medicine cat’s ears could detect the sounds of distress slipping from the guard. Frostfalcon was in pain. A lot of pain.
Pebblepool tossed aside the bloodied moss once she had finished cleaning her patient’s wounds. Some of the gashes were deep, but not so deep that the medicine cat was terribly concerned. They’d need a lot of time to heal and a good amount of poultice to keep our infection, but the wounds were Pebblepool’s least concern. Her eyes drifted down to her sister’s leg. That was where her attention was needed.
The blue-gray molly leaned down to sniff her sister’s leg. As she drew closer she got a better look at the state the limb was in, wondering if it was sprained, fractured, or broken. No matter what, the leg was not in good shape. ”I can’t tell how bad it is just yet, but I’m going to take a feel of your leg. It’ll be painful,” she warned with a quick glance toward Frostfalcon, ”but it’s how I need to assess the damage, and you’ll need to tell me when it hurts.” Before she did anything else she added, ”Worse shape would be that you’d lost the limb entirely or were killed. Without even feeling for an injury in your leg I can already tell you won’t be going anywhere for at least a half moon,” Pebblepool told her littermate sternly. She’d be lucky if she were cleared in a moon’s time, but the medicine cat kept that to herself for now.
Without saying anything else she gently placed a paw on Frostfalcon’s leg. Slowly she began to put pressure on it, easing her paw up. Pebblepool’s eyes were glued to Frostfalcon’s limb, but her ears were perked forward, a subtle sign that she was more aware of Frostfalcon than it may seem.

Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Bearpaw Feeling more at ease with Bearpaw in the medicine cat's den, Fernpaw let out a sigh of relief. She was surprised that she was able to help the Night Guard apprentice into the den despite her small figure. She could feel Bearpaw's unsteadiness when she guided her into the medicine cat's den. Surely she was very dizzy by now, considering the injuries on her face along with the shock. She pondered about what could cause the apprentice's injuries. Many possibilities filled Fernpaw's mind and each one made her feel more unsure. For now she needed to focus on Bearpaw as her patient, not on what could have occured.
The grey spotted tabby didn't spend a lot of time with Bearpaw or any of the other apprentices. She saw and spent time with Pebblepool more than cats her age which she was beginning to prefer. However, whenever she did watch Bearpaw interact with other cats, she was very talkative. If anything, Fernpaw could call her a chatterbox and she stuck out from the other Night Guards who seemed less enthused. She always found it strange that a cat like the brown black apprentice chose such a dangerous role. She wanted to know why many of them were stoic, but she assumed that was due to being a Night Guard. Bearpaw was a breath of fresh air compared to the rest. She liked her a lot because of it.
Hearing the apprentice's meow, Fernpaw turned her attention to her. It was clear that she was struggling with finding words, seeing as she couldn't put a single sentence together. The medicine cat apprentice's heart panged with sympathy while she did her best to listen to Bearpaw. "It's okay if you don't know. I don't expect you to," she mewed, resting her thin tail on the brown black she-cat's shoulder. She hoped she would feel comforted by it. "If you don't want to tell me, you don't have to either."
Once Bearpaw sat down, the tabby felt a bit more relaxed. At least she wouldn't have to worry about her wobbling around the den anymore. Even as Fernpaw stood in front of her, she wasn't any taller or fluffier. Bearpaw looked more like a full guard, not a guard apprentice. Her ear may be infected and she has a lot of pain. She needs to rest, the apprentice thought. She was trying to organize what she needed for Bearpaw in her head. Poppy seeds, cobwebs, soaked moss, marigold, and the poultice we made. I think I'm missing something. Trying not to frown, she shook her head instead. Hopefully Bearpaw wouldn't think she was ignoring her.
"Okay! I will have to clean your wounds first. Then I can apply a poultice and cobwebs to your face. I can bring you some soaked moss if you want some water?" she explained to her patient. At her question, the grey she-cat wondered if she shouldn't tell Bearpaw everything. She knew Hollyheart was gone, but the others had injuries as well. She wanted to be honest, but not to the point where she overwhelmed the large she-cat.
"Frostfalcon will be okay, Pebblepool is taking care of her leg and wounds. Oakshade and Icetail will be fine too. I think those two won't have to spend much time in here. Their injuries don't look too bad. But what matters most is that you will be okay too! I promise," she meowed, trying to reassure Bearpaw as much as possible. Frostfalcon medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool As Frostfalcon clenched her teeth, dug her claws into the floor, and felt her muscles ripple with anguish that Pebblepool would recognize it. It was agonizing to the point she would howl in discomfort. At this point, she preferred that her littermate would stop treating her wounds. Yet Frostfalcon knew that would not be ideal, especially with the state of her injuries. She would be lucky if they were just superficial, but they were not.
Watching the medicine cat toss the moss ball away, it appeared Pebblepool was focusing on her leg. It was most likely that Frostfalcon's major injury was her limb, the one that looked horrific and feeble. Whether it was broken, sprained, twisted, or even fractured, she wouldn't be walking on it any time soon. As the blue-grey she-cat sniffed at her leg, the guard was sure enough that her sister knew figure it out easily. After all, she was a medicine cat and the best one since Smokedapple. Any cat in the clan knew that.
At the sound of Pebblepool's voice, Frostfalcon turned her head and gazed at her sister. Knowing that the examination of her leg would be painful was to be expected. Despite that, she really wanted to know what was wrong with her leg. Would she be able to carry on with her duties once it healed? Or would she be forever impaired? "Do whatever you need to do. I'll do my best to let you know when it hurts," she responded unhurriedly. She quickly changed her tone once Pebblepool told her how long she would be in the medicine cat's den. She wanted to leap out of the nest and storm out of the den, but she couldn't. "A half moon?! I can't be stuck here for that long. There's no way the Night Guard will be able to do patrols without two of us. Let alone three if Bearpaw's injuries make it impossible for her to patrol. They need me."
The blue-grey she-cat let out a sigh of frustration before cursing underneath her breath. The moment the medicine cat put her paw on her leg, she glanced at it. She could see that her littermate was focused on her limb whereas she was more focused on Pebblepool. The pulsating pain had yet to cease and Frostfalcon winced multiple times as the blue-grey molly eased her paw up.
She knew she was in no shape to patrol with her clanmates, but she desperately wanted to. Being stuck in the medicine cat's den with her littermate, who she had barely a relationship with, was going to be challenging. She wasn't looking forward to it at all.

Bearpaw »
If Bearpaw could tell Fernpaw what had happened then she would, but she had a hard time recalling the events just for herself let alone another cat. Perhaps once the treatment was done and Bearpaw had some time to rest she would be able to remember more of what had happened last night. She vowed right then and there that as soon as she had recollected the night’s events she’d find Fernpaw and tell the medicine cat apprentice everything. It probably wouldn’t be important to Fernpaw anymore, but Bearpaw would still tell her. Even in her dazed state the large molly had decided that Fernpaw was going to be her friend. Their duties would keep them away from one another most of the time, but that wasn’t going to stop Bearpaw.
While Fernpaw worked to gather the supplies that she would need, Bearpaw kept herself busy by thinking. Or at least trying to think. The haze of pain throbbing in her head was starting to cloud her internal dialogue now, and with every passing second the apprentice was growing all the more tired. On a regular day after a night of patrolling she would be curled up in her nest trying to sleep by now, and now that all the adrenaline had spent itself Bearpaw wasn’t sure how much longer she could keep herself awake. Fernpaw cleaning her wounds would probably wake her up. That’s what she assumed at least.
Would it be bad manners to try and sleep now? More than likely it would be, especially if Fernpaw needed Bearpaw to stay awake so that she could tell the spotted tabby if something started to hurt more than it already was or if something stopped hurting. Would Bearpaw even be able to sleep while Fernpaw was administering care to her anyway? The black-brown molly doubted it. Despite how woozy she felt she didn’t think she’d be able to sleep until a majority of her pain was numbed.
Thoughts stopped when Fernpaw spoke up. At first the other molly’s words were muted, a jumbled mess to Bearpaw. She didn’t hear the first bit of what Fernpaw had said, and as slow as she was to respond right now she didn’t even try to ask Fernpaw to repeat it. Bearpaw did catch the inquiry about water, and as soon as it registered in her mind that Fernpaw was asking about water it felt as if her throat was drier than any drought the land had ever experienced. ”Water sounds good,” she mewed softly. Maybe if she focused on drinking then some of the pain of being cleaned would be less. It was a nice enough thought.
At the mention of the other Night Guard warriors Bearpaw perked up - or perked up as much as she could before pain shot through her from ear to tail-tip. She winced. Taking a moment to recover, she didn’t speak until a little later. ”G-good. I want them…want them to be okay. I know I’ll be fi-fine with you.” Even though Fernpaw was still an apprentice and not much different in age than Bearpaw, the dark furred molly knew that she was in good paws. She trusted the spotted tabby fully without a doubt.
Pebblepool »
Ah, there it was. The sound of exasperation that Pebblepool knew would come from her littermate sooner or later.
The medicine cat peeled her gaze away from Frostfalcon’s leg and looked at her directly, pupils narrowed ever so slightly. She had dealt with complaints like this before. Every warrior seemed to use the same excuse when they were told they would need to rest instead of patrol. ”What the Night Guard needs is cats who are healthy. With the current state of your leg they’ll be able to better patrol without you.” It was blunt, it was harsh, but her words were firm as she spoke, even a bit callous. Pebblepool simply gave all her patients the truth as she saw it. ”Oakshade will need to rest a few days at most from what I’ve seen. He’s bloody, but nothing stood out as dangerous. Icetail will probably be good to go after I tend to him. Bearpaw will need a few days, but the Guard still has plenty of cats. We’re lucky to even have as many as we do right now.” This much was true. The Night Guard never had a lot of members to its name, and some of the older members of the Clan would say that this was the most cats on the Night Guard TheliaClan had seen in seasons. They would be fine if they were down a few cats temporarily. Frostfalcon was trying to rush when there was no need for it.
Having spoken what she wanted to say she looked back down at her sister’s leg. Pebblepool could feel Frostfalcon wince under paw, could feel how her sister tensed under the pressure of her touch. What she could also feel was some movement as she felt along the Guard’s leg. Pebblepool twitched her tail. Frostfalcon wasn’t going to like this.
”It’s broke. Just above your toes here,” she informed levelly, pulling her paw away to gesture toward the area in which she had felt the bones move. ”Fortunately for you it’s a small break, with no protruding bones or bleeding. Your sense of pain looks to still be working as well, so nerve damage will be little to none. You’re about as lucky as a cat gets with a broken bone.” The medicine cat grabbed a nearby oak leaf that carried one of the poultices made earlier. ”I’ll get your cuts taken care of, give your leg some time to rest before I wrap it. After that I’ll give you some poppy seeds so you can rest.” Before she started doing anything she sat and waited for a response, ears perked, just knowing that Frostfalcon would have something to say, or at the very least make some sort of gesture implying that she was not okay with any of this right now.

Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Bearpaw Fernpaw hurried away from Bearpaw, deciding that it was time to gather the herbs she would need. She stood in front of the herb storage, her amber gaze wandering from herb to herb. Marigold, cobwebs, the poultice, poppy seeds, and two soaked moss balls for Bearpaw, she reminded herself. She gathered an array of herbs before bounding back to her patient. She set them down gently before disappearing yet again to the small pool at the back of the den. Once there, she grabbed two balls of moss and soaked them in the pool before picking both up with her maw. Her thoughts began to wander, but Fernpaw quickly pushed them away. There was no time to think about trivial things.
Within moments she was back by Bearpaw's side and set one of the soaked moss balls by her maw. She didn't want to make the dark furred she-cat move around too much, considering the amount of pain she was in. "Here you go," she mewed, nudging the soaked moss ball a bit closer to her. "I'd like to clean your wounds first."
Fernpaw wasn't asking for permission, she preferred to let her patient know what she was going to do. It was mostly for herself, but also for Bearpaw''s peace of mind. She imagined that the guard apprentice didn't spend much of her time in the medicine cat's den. However, she liked the other she-cat enough that she would love to be her friend. Maybe she would ask her about it once she would get some rest. Hopefully she wouldn't mind such a strange question.
Hearing the brown black apprentice's response, the spotted tabby nodded vigorously. She could tell that Bearpaw was exhausted and in pain. Her winces were obvious. "Every cat will be okay and you will be okay too," she told her reassuringly. "By the way, if anything hurts when I clean your wounds, make a noise. You don't have to stay awake for now. I will be gentle."
The medicine cat apprentice reached down for the second soaked moss ball, taking it firmly into her jaws. She began cleaning around Bearpaw's swollen eye softly, unsure if she should apply a lot of pressure. She didn't want to hurt the apprentice any further. It was clear that her injuries were tender to touch, so Fernpaw chose to be as gentle as physically possible. From there, the tabby moved up to her ear where blood had coagulated. As she applied a bit of pressure to her ear, the soaked moss ball was cleaning the dried blood up well. She then moved to the side of Bearpaw's face and underneath her swollen eye. She had watched Pebblepool clean up Hollyheart and it seemed like she was doing it right with her patient. Thankfully, the majority of the blood was coming off. She still needed to clean up the rest of Bearpaw's fur, but otherwise it appeared like a job well done. "You okay, Bearpaw?" she mumbled, pushing the moss ball against the top of her head carefully.
Frostfalcon medicine cat den, throwing a fit — accompanied by: Pebblepool Frostfalcon did not like when her littermate gave her accurate statements. It meant she was wrong which she detested. Pebblepool's narrowed gaze told her that she was in for a lecture. She wasn't looking forward to it by all means, despite her sister being the only cat who would tell her things like they are. Reality was a harsh truth for Frostfalcon and, of course, she loathed it. Despite her role being to protect the clan every night, she knew how the cats of the Night Guard would suffer from the beginning of their training and until the tragic end. It was almost poetic.
Her blunt response wasn't what she wanted to hear, it was the exact opposite. She didn't doubt that Pebblepool knew well and the absolute truth of reality. It was clear-cut and meant to shock the blue-grey she-cat. She couldn't lie to herself, knowing that Pebblepool was dead on. Did she really want to give her sister the satisfaction or quarrel with her? Neither were good choices, but Frostfalcon didn't have many options. "Fine, you're right," she admitted with a loud, unnecessary sigh. She was glad that Oakshade, and Icetail were going to be okay alleviated some stress. She supposed the Guards would be fine without her, even if it was for a half moon. Although her news of her recovery still stung. "I'm glad that they will all be okay, it's good news. We are lucky to have more cats in the Night Guard than ever before. I just hope it stays that way."
Not a single one of them deserves to die like Hollyheart did, the guard thought, trying to not reflect on what happened during the night. She didn't want to remember any of it, especially the strange, bright lights she had seen. She wasn't going to bother Pebblepool about it as she had enough to deal with. She needed to focus on her injured leg which still hurt. Hopefully it wasn't broken, a sprain would be more preferred if she had to choose.
The blue-grey medicine cat's words echoed in her ears. It's broke. Just above your toes here. It's broke. Just above your toes here. To say the least, Frostfalcon felt like she could combust. As Pebblepool pulled her paw away, she stared at her broken limb bitterly. She frowned as her green gaze narrowing, still focusing on her stupid limb. Her stupid, broken limb. "It's broken?! You think my limb is broken? IT'S BROKEN?!" she meowed with fury, raising her voice. It pained her, but Frostfalcon didn't care.
She was not taking the news well at all. She couldn't see straight, couldn't think straight. Frostfalcon was in disbelief. She disregarded most of what Pebblepool told her after saying it was broken, her confidence shook and her thoughts at a loss. "Lucky me," she grumbled, placing her chin on her front paws. "Just... do whatever you need to do. I don't care."

Bearpaw »
Right now the moss ball that Fernpaw had brought over to her was the best thing Bearpaw had seen all morning. Water was exactly what her scratchy, dry throat needed.
”Thank you,” Bearpaw breathed. She leaned down and licked at the moss ball, taking in as much water as her body could handle. With each lap of her tongue a pulse of pain rolled through her face, but she ignored it, the need to satisfy her thirst more than the pain that trembled through her body. It also helped knowing that soon her pain would be healed by Fernpaw’s medical knowledge.
As if the spotted tabby had read her mind Fernpaw spoke up and mentioned finally cleaning Bearpaw’s wounds. She pulled away from the moss, mostly satisfied now. The guard apprentice heard that she didn’t have to stay awake, but despite how tired she was Bearpaw doubted she’d be able to close her eyes and actually fall into a slumber while her wounds were being cleaned. Then again, after everything Bearpaw had been through falling asleep may be easier than she was giving it credit for. Maybe she could try it, maybe if she just closed her eyes for a few seconds…
A stinging sensation snapped her out of any trance she had been in. Pain seared anew through her face, causing her to grit her teeth, face tensing as a grimace pulled at her lips. The wounds needed to be cleaned, but dear StarClan were they tender! Bearpaw unsheathed her claws, digging the tips into the soft ground underneath her. Fernpaw had told her to let her know if she felt any pain, but Bearpaw knew the injuries needed to be cleaned, and if she just let it happen now it would be over a lot faster than not.
As Fernpaw began cleaning Bearpaw’s wounds, it was clear that most of the real damage was done to the large molly’s ear. The tip was completely gone, parts of her inner ear shredded and gone as well. Only the bottom half of the ear remained, a scar that Bearpaw would carry for the rest of her life. Her left eye, as swollen as it was, only had a cut above, still bleeding somewhat but not deep and an easy fix. A few other scratches broke through the black fur along her forehead, somewhat swollen as well, and a long, thin cut ran down from below her eye down to the side of her jaw, a few whiskers missing while some were frayed from the trauma. Bearpaw’s face was a mess, and she was sure to be scarred heavily on the left side of her visage, but none of the wounds were life threatening.
Pain continued to pulse through her head and down her spine, but she remained seated even as Fernpaw asked how she was doing. ”Fi-fine. I’m fine,” mumbled the black apprentice. ”Hurts…but-but wounds always-always hurt.” Bearpaw wanted to make sure Fernpaw knew it was no fault of her own, but rather it was just because injuries hurt no matter what. Fernpaw was just doing her job, and Bearpaw, even dizzy and shocked as she was, wanted to let the medicine cat apprentice know that she understood that.
Pebblepool »
Pebblepool knew her littermate would not take the news well. Frostfalcon had not taken it well earlier when Pebblepool explained that, even if the leg wasn’t broken, she’d need to rest for at least half a moon. Now that bones were confirmed to be broken, the rest period would be even longer. The medicine cat glanced in the direction of Fernpaw and Bearpaw, checking in on them as Frostfalcon threw her little temper tantrum - fortunately the blue-gray molly’s furious yelling did not bother the two. Perhaps Fernpaw was too lost in treating her patient while Bearpaw was too out of it to even notice.
The medicine cat drew out a sigh as she turned her attention back to Frostfalcon. While her expression remained neutral, it was the flicking of her tail-tip that silently spoke of the annoyance at her sister’s reaction. Yet Pebblepool did not say anything about it; rather, she stayed silent, allowing the Night Guard to get the immature fury out of her system. As much as it annoyed the medicine cat she understood where it came from. Frostfalcon despised not being able to carry out her normal duties. It angered her to be cooped up and told not to help with the daily tasks of the Guard. In some ways Pebblepool could understand where she was coming from - it would be hard for her to step away from her duties as a medicine cat, but her pride was not so consuming that it would throw her into a stubborn rampage.
If Pebblepool were a caring, supportive sister then she would have done something to soothe her sister’s angered grief over the broken bone. She would have known how to comfort her and tell her that everything would be okay, but instead she took a step back to gather a few smaller stalks of hill cane. She placed those nearby, gathering a few more leaves and a large slather of honey that had been out since before the Night Guard had returned. ”I’ll need to splint your leg,” she told Frostfalcon. Even though her patient had told her she didn’t care what needed to be done, Pebblepool remained in her habit of explaining parts of the process. She found that explaining what was going to happen lessened a cat’s fears of what was to come.
Saying no more she took Frostfalcon’s broken leg and began to splint it with gentle, yet efficient, paws. This was not the first time she had ever mended a broken bone, and while not as common as a simple sprain or cut, she took care of the splint in a matter of just a few minutes. Once done she stepped away to get a further look at the handiwork. ”The splint will need to be changed every few days. The honey I used to hold it together won’t stick as long as it needs to, so it’ll need replacing, but this is what you’ll need to wear for now. I usually see broken bones mend in a moon and a half’s time.” This would be something that Pebblepool would want Fernpaw to watch as the apprentice would one day need to know how to handle broken bones, but with her own patients to tend to Pebblepool didn’t want to pull Fernpaw away. Besides, there would be plenty of time for the apprentice to learn how to handle broken bones - Pebblepool would be nursing Frostfalcon’s leg back to health for quite some time. ”I just need to put poultices and cobwebs on your wounds now. After that I’ll give you a poppy seed so that you can fully rest.” She nodded toward her littermate before stepping away to gather the rest of her supplies, already mentally preparing herself to look over Oakshade as she would be calling for the tom rather soon now.

Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Bearpaw Originally, Fernpaw believed that if Bearpaw would sleep during the cleansing of wounds that she wouldn't feel as much pain. She was wrong as to be expected for it explained the grimacing from Bearpaw. She noticed she had dug her claws into the soft ground. Although Bearpaw wasn't telling her that she was in pain, it was quite obvious. No wonder the apprentice had gotten so battered and beaten up from whatever had happened. Hopefully she would heal perfectly, but her ear injuries were worrisome to Fernpaw. The tip of her ear was gone, the inside of her ear looked even worse due to the shredding. How would Pebblepool treat the inside of her ear? she wondered, briefly stopping from cleaning the black she-cat's wounds. I may ask her... I'm just not sure.
The medicine cat apprentice hoped that Bearpaw wouldn't notice her hesitation. She needed to know what to do and not mess up Bearpaw's ear among other injuries. She picked up the blood soaked moss ball again, gently scrubbing at Bearpaw's scar on her forehead and the cut that led down to her jaw. Her whiskers were cleaned next as softly as Fernpaw could do. She felt terrible for the guard apprentice and she could only imagine how she felt while the tabby continued to clean her. It must feel excruciating, enough to make a cat yowl in pain. However, Bearpaw was lucky; none of her injuries were life threatening, but the scarring would be noticeable for a long time.
Fernpaw relented, finally dropping the blood soaked moss ball down by her own paws. At least the most painful part of the process was finished, though she would have to apply poultices next along with cobwebs. She did have some poppy seeds with her and maybe now was the best time to offer them to her patient. "Bearpaw, would you like to take a poppy seed to help with pain now? You'll sleep just fine," she asked before pushing the used moss ball aside.
In the hopes that the other apprentice would accept, the grey spotted tabby padded a few inches away to gather the other herbs she had brought with her. She pulled two poultices in front of her while using her other paw to set the poppy seeds next to Bearpaw. "You know, I could tell you were in pain, but you're right," she mewed, pausing for a moment. "Wounds always hurt. You will get better soon though, I promise."
Fernpaw carefully picked up the first poultice and glanced at Bearpaw's face, deciding where she would put the first poultice. "The poultice I have may smell weird to you, but it will help your wounds heal," she explained slowly. "I'm gonna put it on your face, your ear, and any of your other injuries. Is that okay?" Frostfalcon medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool Frostfalcon was a drama queen, plain and simple. She was throwing a tantrum like a noisy little kit. This was typical of her to be furious and rattled. Once she had finished howling, she grumbled beneath her breath angrily, digging her front claws into the soft ground. She was already sick of being in the medicine cat's den yet her time spent in here was barely beginning. She would be stuck with her littermate for a moon and a half, including her overly cheerful apprentice. The thought of it was unsettling to be begin with. Had she not been part of the patrol, her leg wouldn't be broken. However, that wasn't a kind thought whatsoever. What about Hollyheart? If she hadn't been part of the patrol, she wouldn't be dead. Maybe some other cat would have died.
The blue-grey she-cat's pride was her everything. She always put her pride second after the other Night Guards, but it surely came before her own health. She was normally careful although one couldn't say that for sure. Frostfalcon had enough scars to prove she'd visit the medicine cat's den before. Until now for she has a broken bone and new and old scars ripped open. Treatment was necessary if she wanted to live longer and avoid infections. After all, she wasn't going anywhere with her leg. Even sitting hurt, let alone walking. Although she and Pebblepool were not close in any shape or form, Frostfalcon did conceive her sister as helpful, but she didn't see her as supportive-- at least to the guard. In the case of other cats, she was. "Go ahead," she replied curtly to the medicine cat, watching as Pebblepool began to splint her broken leg. It hurt as soon as she had lifted her leg up. Somehow her sister was quite gentle and made the process of spltining the leg to be less painful. She wouldn't admit that she found the blue-grey medicine cat's work to be impressive, but it really was. "That's... fine," she grumbled before raising her voice. She didn't like the time frame that had been laid out for her, but she didn't have any choice. "I suppose I can keep an eye on it to see if it feels like it's slipping off of my leg."
The guard hoped she wouldn't be stuck with Pebblepool constantly tending to her wounds. Maybe her sibling would be less distant and cold, though she doubted it. However, there was also Fernpaw. The apprentice was usually quite cheerful and eager, but maybe Frostfalcon could deal with her. She seemed easier to get along with anyways. Hearing Pebblepool's meow again, her ears pricked up. "Alright. Take your time. It's not like I'm going anywhere," she responded, watching as the medicine cat padded away.

Bearpaw »
Bearpaw was silently hoping that soon her wounds would be cleaned and remedied so that she could finally get some rest. Now that her thirst had been satiated her body yearned for the chance to sleep, but with Fernpaw cleaning her wounds and her head still throbbing it was next to impossible for the large apprentice to even think about sleeping soundly. So as soon as Fernpaw mentioned poppy seeds the black molly perked up as best she could, her one open copper eye brightening. ”Poppy seed…please.” She did her best to nod, but all that happened was a deep grimace across her muzzle as new pain spread through her face. Perhaps Bearpaw shouldn’t move as much as she would like to until her wounds had had some time to heal.
It shouldn’t have surprised her when Fernpaw returned announcing that she noticed when Bearpaw had been in pain earlier. Of course a medicine cat apprentice would have noticed her winces as her wounds were being cleaned, but the black apprentice was so dazed and tired from the night’s happenings that being subtle about it all wasn’t even something she had thought about. Not that Bearpaw was a subtle cat to begin with - she had always been the type to share her thoughts and feelings on things. Her emotions were never hidden. Any cat to speak to Bearpaw would know her opinion on the matter right away.
The apprentice flushed underneath her thick pelt. The semblance of a sheepish grin pulled at the corner of her lips. ”S’all okay,” she mewed, words once again slurring as she answered Fernpaw’s question. Whatever Fernpaw had to do was fine by Bearpaw, especially since she knew this was the only way that she would get better. Once her consent had been given to the other molly Bearpaw slowly slid her paw over to the poppy seed. It took her a few tries, but eventually she managed to bring the seed up to her mouth, lapping at it a few times with her tongue before finally letting it rest there so she could swallow it down. ”How long…before I sleep?” She asked slowly, wondering just how long it would be until the seeds kicked in. Bearpaw didn’t think it would take that long, but she had never been given poppy seeds before and even when exhausted and hurting she was still curious about new experiences.
Pebblepool »
The hard part was done. With Frostfalcon’s leg now wrapped and splinted, Pebblepool could get to work on lathering the premade poultices onto her sister’s wounds, cover them with cobweb, and calling it good. The other injured Night Guards would soon be getting their own treatment.
With the poultices and cobwebs already nearby, Pebblepool made quick work of Frostfalcon’s new and reopened wounds. For what it was worth, none of the Guard’s wounds were terribly deep. Painful for sure, and would take some time to heal, but the broken bones were the worst that Frostfalcon would have to deal with, and Pebblepool already knew quite well what her littermate thought of that. She’d have to think on it, but perhaps she would allow Frostfalcon to spend some time outside of the medicine cat den during the days so long as she had either Pebblepool or Fernpaw to supervise her. Mending a broken bone took a lot of time and rest, but Pebblepool knew all too well that the bane of Frostfalcon’s existence would be being cooped up inside the medicine cat den for almost two moons. Allowing her some time outside would do her well - after all, healing was more than just a physical process, it was a mental one just as much.
Now done with spreading poultices onto the wounds and covering them with cobwebs, Pebblepool grabbed two of the nearby poppy seeds she had brought over and nudged them beside Frostfalcon. ”These will help with the pain and allow you to get some rest. We’ll start with two, but if that doesn’t work then I may give you a third.” Three would be the max, though. StarClan forbid that three didn’t work, but if not then Pebblepool had a few other herbs in the back of her stores that were used to ease pain. Surely two would do the trick, though. Frostfalcon was a full grown cat, but she wasn’t massive in size. Two poppy seeds would be enough for a cat her size and stature.
The blue-gray molly kept her attention on her sister a moment longer, making sure she took the seeds, before she looked over to the other side of the den where Fernpaw still had Bearpaw in her care. ”Everything going alright, Fernpaw?” Inquired the medicine cat. She had no doubts that Fernpaw had treated her patient well, but she wanted to make sure that Fernpaw felt confident in her abilities and that the spotted tabby had no questions or concerns that needed to be addressed before the last two patients were brought in.

Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Bearpaw & Pebblepool Fernpaw had gathered two premade poultices earlier and brought them to her side. She hoped the smell of the herbs wouldn't be so strong since Bearpaw would have them stuck to her face. Noticing as her patient's one good eye brightened, she soon felt relieved. One poppy seed seemed like enough for the injured apprentice. Despite her size, one too many could make her very sleepy and Fernpaw didn't want that for her. Bearpaw needed a good amount of rest before she would be back to training. The grey spotted tabby nudged a small black seed over to the guard apprentice, knowing she could take it on her own. She wasn't a kit after all. "It should be next to you, so you can take it whenever you'd like," she mewed quickly with a nod.
The medicine cat apprentice picked up one of the poultices and pressed the strange substance onto Bearpaw's face. She began to spread it around evenly, making sure she could cover the black she-cat's forehead, jaw, and the space around her swollen eye. Fernpaw lathered some on to Bearpaw's closed eye gingerly, hoping that it wouldn't fall off. Luckily, she saved another poultice for Bearpaw's ear. She needed to ask Pebblepool how to treat it before applying it. Once she had finished covering the young cat's injuries with the poultices, she grabbed some cobwebs with her maw. She quickly transferred it to one of her paws and laid it on Bearpaw's swollen eye along with her forehead, jawline, and the long scar that went across her face. She then quickly applied one to her cheek. "I know," Fernpaw replied, watching Bearpaw as she lapped up the poppy seed. "Not too long. You'll feel sleepy once it begins to kick in. If you have any more pain after that, Pebblepool and I have other herbs that can help."
Speaking of Pebblepool, the spotted tabby's ears pricked up at the sound of her voice. This would be her best opportunity to ask her mentor a dumb but important question. "Things are good! I just have one question though," she meowed back a bit too loud, glancing at Bearpaw momentarily. She then lowered her voice. "One moment, I gotta ask Pebblepool a question about your ear."
She padded away slowly, making way for the medicine cat. "How should I treat Bearpaw's ear? The inside of her ear... is shredded," Fernpaw asked, pausing for a moment. "I was going to put the poultice on and some cobwebs, but... I'm not sure." ( Feathertalon ) Frostfalcon medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool Frostfalcon was, at the least, grateful that the medicine cat was an excellent healer. Considering she couldn't do anything but watch Pebblepool or dwell about her injuries, she chose the former. While her littermate applied poultices and sticky cobwebs to her pelt, she held back a painful groan. Her new and old wounds burned in agony. There was no point in hiding her discomfort anymore. What good would it do anyways?
She knew deep down that coming to terms with her broken leg would be easier said than done. After all, Pebblepool told her bluntly that it was broken and she would be spending two moons in the medicine cat's den. The amount of time it would take to heal seemed unreal. She already felt uncomfortable and stuffy inside the den. Her time spent healing would be an obstacle that Frostfalcon would have to get over with quickly. However, it didn't seem like that would be happening any time soon.
The blue-grey she-cat watched her sister finish treating her wounds in silence. As soon as she completed her task, she glanced down at the two poppy seeds that Pebblepool gave her. "I guess two will be fine. Hopefully I can get some good rest for once," she mewed back, leaning down slightly to lap up the black seeds. She immediately swallowed them and returned to her former position. "Thanks, Pebblepool."
As the medicine cat turned her attention to Fernpaw and Bearpaw, Frostfalcon glanced around the den. This was going to be her temporary nest for quite some time. She might as well get comfortable while she has a chance. The guard placed her head on her front paws, letting out a small sigh. Two moons of sitting in this den with a broken leg, she thought, and this is only the beginning.

Bearpaw »
Under any other circumstances having her face rubbed by another cat’s paws would have caused the young apprentice to fall into a laughing fit. It would be quite the sight for any feline outside of the interaction, seeing Bearpaw, this large, intimidating looking cat, with a smaller, probably more inviting appearing feline, placing their paws against Bearpaw’s face. Had this been a regular day for Bearpaw she could have easily imagined what the scene would look like, but inside her sleep deprived, pain-throbbing head, it was a mere verbal thought with no images to guide her imagination. Between the sensation of Fernpaw rubbing the poultice on her face and the thoughts she had just had, this would probably lead to some interesting dreams once the poppy seed kicked in.
There was still pain radiating from the wounds, but they felt no worse than what they already did. If anything, as surprising as it was to Bearpaw, the medicine cat apprentice rubbing poultices upon her face did not hurt as much as she had expected it to; honestly, the wounds were starting to feel as if she were getting a chill, a cooling sensation covering her visage. There had to be some kind of herb in the mixture that was the reason for that, but Bearpaw was clueless as to what sort of herb that could be. Maybe she’d ask Fernpaw later, after she had gotten some sleep in. Sure, she was curious now, but her brain was starting to slow down, her eyes growing heavier, her breathing slowing…
Bearpaw felt herself starting to sway ever so slightly. Just barely did she hear Fernpaw’s response about how long the seed would take to bring sleep to her - it wasn’t that long, or at least it didn’t feel that long to Bearpaw. Then again, her sense of time had been skewed ever since the aftermath of the attack. For all she knew it could have been five hours that had passed between then and now.
The last thing she heard was Fernpaw telling her that there were other herbs that could be offered if the poppy seed didn’t subdue her pain. If she nodded in confirmation or not, Bearpaw would probably never know. Her one good eye slid close as the drowsiness finally took her over. The black apprentice’s paws slid out from underneath her in a slow, languid pace, allowing her to gently slump down and fall into a poppy seed induced slumber.
Pebblepool »
with frostfalcon & fernpaw - Sand
There was a part of Pebblepool that felt some semblance of sympathy for Frostfalcon, and the other Night Guards that had been injured. It was only a smidge, though, just enough of a tug that the medicine cat was aware of such a feeling. The position of a Night Guard was a noble one, with that Pebblepool could agree, but it was dangerous, and all Night Guard cats knew that. If a cat ever expressed interest in joining their ranks they were outright told that they may not live but a few seasons as a Guard, that they more than likely would never get the chance to settle down, raise a family, become a senior warrior. Instead, they were more likely to perish at the doing of some unnamed creature that roamed the mountains at night. Cats were given plenty of chances to decide against becoming a Night Guard, yet there were those that persisted, that went through with the interviews and completed their training. It was both a high honor and a curse. Even still, Pebblepool did not wish injury on any cat. If she could she would wish that nothing bad ever happened to her Clanmates, Night Guard or not, but that simply wasn’t the case, and the reality of it all was that cats got hurt. Some more than others. Some knew that they were leading a deadly life, and it was them knowing that that had cut Pebblepool’s sympathy short.
Finishing Frostfalcon’s wound treatment, Pebblepool stepped back, eyeing her handiwork for a moment. The cobwebs were placed in thick patches alongside Frostfalcon’s body, a silken drape that blended in rather well with the guard’s silvery pelt. It would make for a fine accessory if not for the fact that angry slashes hid just underneath the strings.
The molly nodded when her sister spoke up. ”No thanks necessary. I’d help any cat that needed me.” While speaking the truth that she felt, her comment could be taken as callous as well, just another remark, another reminder, that the two littermates were not close. There was a distance in her words that covered the span of an entire valley. It was a gap so deep and so wide that nothing may be able to close it. The two of them practically sharing a den for two moons was sure to be an experience for both sisters.
However, it was clear that there was no gap that existed between Pebblepool and Fernpaw. The medicine cat was rather fond of her apprentice, indicated by how she reacted to the young molly as she answered Pebblepool’s earlier inquiry. ”Wrapping cobweb around what’s left of her ear would work,” she told the spotted tabby, words firm and level yet drizzled with a hint of warmth in them. There wasn’t much difference with how Pebblepool had spoken to Frostfalcon earlier than how she was now with Fernpaw, but there was a change in pitch, a slight dip in her words that indicated something more than just two cats exchanging words. ”There’s not much we can do about a shredded ear other than prevent infection while it heals. Not even StarClan could regrow an ear.” Pebblepool glanced toward Bearpaw, noticing how the large black molly had already relaxed and was slumped over in such a way that told the medicine cat that her dosage of poppy had started to work. While she had not checked over Bearpaw’s wounds herself, she was sure Fernpaw had done a job well done, and if Bearpaw was able to sleep soundly even with a poppy seed in her system, then surely her wounds weren’t so serious that the pain overrode the medicine. ”You could add some chewed up oak leaf to the poultice you’re using now if you wanted. It’ll thicken the poultice some more to help it dry quicker, that way it lowers the chance of Bearpaw having to deal with poultice draining down her ear,” Pebblepool suggested after a moment, eyes now back to looking at Fernpaw. As cheerful as Bearpaw was, having a sticky, semi-liquid substance trickling down her ear would dampen even her. Overall, there wasn’t much Pebblepool could suggest beyond that. The molly’s ear was still an open wound that needed to be treated, and a good poultice with cobweb was about as good as it got.

Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Bearpaw, Pebblepool Fernpaw glanced at Bearpaw, noticing that she had finally fallen asleep. She was slumped down, but she looked more at peace than before. She was glad that the poppy seeds had worked for the apprentice. Hopefully the black apprentice would sleep the rest of the day and her pain would subside, even the smallest amount possible. At the same time, she studied all the cobwebs and poultices that she had used on Bearpaw's wounds. Her thick fur somehow held up with the string of cobwebs across her face. She still had yet to apply any herbs to her injured ear in concern that she would make a mistake.
Somehow the spotted tabby didn't feel tired, but what happened wasn't too common for Fernpaw. For Pebblepool, it most likely was. After all, she was a full fledged medicine cat whereas Fernpaw wasn't any where near that level. The thought of Hollyheart's death had vanished and was replaced with her work and Bearpaw. Maybe she'd try to talk to the guard apprentice later if she was awake. In the meantime, she needed to speak with her mentor.
As Pebblepool explained that wrapping a cobweb around Bearpaw's ear would be fine, she grumbled to herself. The grey spotted tabby was annoyed that she hadn't thought as far as her mentor did. To be fair, she was just an apprentice and she didn't know the ins and outs of all injuries yet. She needed to be patient and willing to learn instead of becoming frustrated with little, almost trivial things. Shaking her head, Fernpaw nodded quickly, almost as if her head was bouncing.
"Just a cobweb? I can put that on her ear while she's asleep. I don't think she will wake up," she mewed in response, pausing before continuing. "You're right, I hope she won't have hearing problems. By the way, how is Frostfalcon? You still have Oakshade and Icetail left to treat, right?" Frostfalcon medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool Frostfalcon knew Pebblepool wasn't too sympethatic to her and possibly others. Their relationship was nonexistent as if they weren't littermates, or that they spent a good six moons together in the same den as kits. She had never spent a lot of her time with Pebblepool, especially when she was training as a Night Guard apprentice. Meanwhile, her sibling was off in the medicine cat's den, learning to become an important, excellent medicine cat. Their worlds were completely opposite and their roles did not have a lot in common. It was no wonder why the two sisters didn't speak.
She eyed her old and new scars which we covered nicely by cobwebs. Her green gaze moved towards her broken leg and she couldn't help but blinked several times. She knew the reality of her injuries were real, but coming to terms with it was much harder. Two moons and then I'm out of here. Who knows, maybe I can recover faster, she thought to herself. She'd just have to take things slow for the time being.
Although she began to feel sleepy, Frostfalcon was able to hear Pebblepool's meow. The distance between the two was massive, even if they were inside the same den. There wasn't a single feeling of closeness in Frostfalcon's opinion anyways. "I'm sure you would," she mewed slowly with a big yawn. It was hard to tell if her comment was rude, sarcastic, or something else. The sleepiness from the poppy seeds were kicking in.
Her green eyes were growing heavy quickly. She placed her head on her paws and tried to curl up in the moss nest, but it wasn't possible due to her broken leg. Instead, the silvery she-cat placed her leg in a more comfortable position. She soon closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Pebblepool »
For as fond as Pebblepool felt about Fernpaw, not even she was able to pinpoint the subtle burst of frustration that had gripped her apprentice. Reading the emotions of her Clanmates was a skill that Pebblepool lacked efficiently in, and she lacked even more in such a skill when it came to subtle emotions. She had always been a cat of logic, and she had always been closer to the Clan’s deceased than she had been to the living.
Pebblepool nodded in response to Fernpaw’s statement. Her green eyes shifted over to where Bearpaw lay in her nest, slouched in such a way that seemed comfortable only to a cat in a poppy seed induced slumber. Not even the medicine cat could stifle a twitch of amusement at the sight. ”I doubt she’d wake even if a herd of elk trampled through camp.” The black apprentice was sleeping, well, like a bear, and Pebblepool doubted that putting cobweb on her ear would stir her from her slumber. ”We’ll test her hearing throughout the healing process,” Pebblepool told Fernpaw. The medicine cat wasn’t too worried about Bearpaw’s ability to hear out of the injured ear, but she could understand why there would be concern. The ear had sustained considerable damage in last night’s attack. It was imperative to keep an eye on it and make sure that it healed properly. And speaking of injuries…
Pebblepool was relieved to see that even Frostfalcon had succumbed to the poppy seeds by now. Hopefully the guard would be asleep for some time. Rest was a large part of healing. ”She has a break above her toes on that leg.” Pebblepool gestured with her tail toward the splinted leg that Frostfalcon had gingerly stretched outward. ”It’s not life threatening, but she’ll need to stay here for at least two moons. StarClan knows she’ll try to get out before then.” The blue-gray molly sighed, muscles rolling underneath her pelt as if preparing themselves for chasing after a rebellious Frostfalcon. The pain of her break would more than likely keep her in place for a little while, but there would come a day where the pain would subside. The bone wouldn’t be healed yet, but the pain would fade and that would be when Frostfalcon would really need to be watched. Fortunately there was still some time before that. Time for Pebblepool and Fernpaw both to prepare themselves for whatever the guard tried to do.
When asked about the last two cats who needed treatment, Pebblepool nodded. She motioned for Fernpaw to follow as she headed toward the den’s exit. ”Would you be comfortable with taking on one as your patient again? You did rather well with Bearpaw,” praised Pebblepool. Fernpaw was a quick learner. If she kept this up then it wouldn’t be long before Pebblepool could give her patients without even needing to ask if Fernpaw felt comfortable with it. In some moons time the gray tabby would be a full medicine cat as well, treating patients just as well as Pebblepool and all the medicine cats that had gone before them both.

(I'm so sorry for the late reply, been a busy week despite me having the reply finished since Tuesday night and didn't get a chance to post it on Wednesday [was at the hospital] or yesterday [was at a concert + sleeping a lot bc wednesday was a bit of a mess].) Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool Unlike her mentor, Fernpaw was very aware of her emotions and her clanmates. She could tell when Bearpaw was in pain, when It was easier for her to tell how cats felt compared to Pebblepool who she still couldn't get a read on. Maybe she was emotionally closed off or lacked it. Whatever the reason was, she was interested in finding out, but now was not the time.
Her gaze was quick to follow Pebblepool's as she noticed that Bearpaw was fast asleep. The poppy seeds had definitely worked for her and hopefully she would recover well from her shock and other injuries. She let out a mrrow of amusement at her mentor's response, trying not to be so loud. "I think you're right. At least she's able to sleep now," she mewed as her green gaze rested on Bearpaw. "Really? Do you think she will be able to hear properly after a while?"
She felt hopeful for the black apprentice's recovery plans. She didn't want Bearpaw to lose her hearing because the guards and warriors relied on it for their duties. Even Fernpaw relied on her hearing too. She didn't want to get too ahead of herself and wonder what they would do if Bearpaw faced issues with her hearing due to her ear injury.
The spotted tabby had barely been listening to Pebblepool as her mind took over. She immediately stood straight up and glanced at Frostfalcon, who was leaning in her nest. It appeared that the guard's leg was going to heal, but two moons seemed adequate for a broken bone. Fernpaw couldn't help but wonder what Frostfalcon thought about her leg. She seemed to be the opposite of Pebblepool, which could explain their strained relationship. "It doesn't sound too bad, right? I'm sure it must hurt though," she commented, looking back at Frostfalcon's leg. Based on the medicine cat's sigh, she assumed that guard would be a handful for them. She was unsure if she was really looking forward to babysitting her. Most of the time, cats who came into the medicine cat's den were easy to take care of. They didn't fight back, but it seemed that Frostfalcon would be the opposite. "Even if she tries, she can't leave because you're her medicine cat. I don't think Dimstar would let her join patrols with a broken leg, especially because she's a Night Guard."
She carefully padded after the blue grey she-cat, focusing on Pebblepool as she was following her. Her ears pricked up at her praise and Fernpaw's amber eyes brightened warmly, glad that she had done a good job with Bearpaw. She didn't expect to get a second patient of her own at all. She felt elated and wore a big grin on her maw. "Sure!" she blurted out a tad too loud before closing her maw momentarily. "Thank you, Pebblepool. I really appreciate it! Who's my next patient? Oakshade or Icetail?"

[ it's all good, Sand! hope you're alright and starting to feel better, being at a hospital is always draining, and im sure a concert is just as draining o; ] Pebblepool »
It was always hard to tell exactly how a cat was going to heal when it came to serious injuries. Had Bearpaw just been given a single scratch then Pebblepool would have confidently explained that the apprentice’s hearing would return to normal once the injury was healed, but with how drastic the molly’s wounds were Pebblepool couldn’t tell for sure. Fortunately Bearpaw was young and had been treated soon after she had acquired her wounds. That was enough to give Pebblepool some reassurance that hearing loss wouldn’t be a considerable issue if any occurred. ”Perhaps so,” she responded, her answer guarded in a way that gave hope, yet also remained cautious just in case Bearpaw’s ear had been internally damaged more than it appeared. She didn’t want to tell Fernpaw one thing and then the outcome be completely different. ”I’m certain she won’t lose her hearing in the ear, but time will tell if the injuries affected any of her hearing.” There wasn’t much either Pebblepool or Fernpaw could do for the night guard apprentice. They’d just have to keep an eye on the healing process and, as Pebblepool remarked earlier, test Bearpaw’s hearing during the wound’s healing.
While she didn’t speak it aloud, Pebblepool found Fernpaw’s hope to be rather wishful; she had no problems with hoping for the best outcome when patients came in with injuries or illness, but she looked at the logical outcomes, the outcomes that were most likely to happen. Her predictions came from experience, not hope, but perhaps she could learn a little something from Fernpaw, add some of that wishful thinking to her daily duties as well. The medicine cat chuffed inwardly, a flick of her tail the only indication that she had been thinking such thoughts to herself. Perhaps the apprentice was teaching the mentor just as much as the mentor was teaching the apprentice.
Attention drawn back to Frostfalcon, Pebblepool nodded as she eyed her sleeping sister. ”She’ll need poppy seeds for the next few days. A broken bone is quite painful, and she’ll need as much rest as she can get to help her heal.” It’ll also be easier to keep her inside the den if she’s asleep, Pebblepool thought to herself, jaw tight and eyes narrowed. Keeping Frostfalcon in her nest and not moving too much would be a difficult task even for the experienced medicine cat. She could only imagine how Fernpaw would be able to handle the guard’s annoyance if the two mollies were left alone - Pebblepool had a hard enough time dealing with her littermate, so much so that she didn’t like the idea of Fernpaw ever having to put up with her alone in these coming moons. ”You’re right about that. Dimstar wouldn’t let an injured cat go on patrols. In fact, none of the night guard will allow her to join them until she’s healed.” Many of the night guard would surely act similar to Frostfalcon and have the same thoughts as she did if they were in her situation, but while their self preservation skills were low their preservation for others was much more advanced. Dimstar herself was like that. In fact, she was a lot like Frostfalcon in that she hated to be held back and was not fond of being told to stay put. That Clan’s leader had a lot of similarities to that of any night guard. It would have been no surprise if Dimstar had become a night guard instead, yet her ambitions drove her to be leader rather than a guard. Despite that though Pebblepool was sure that the leader would keep an eye on Frostfalcon.
Pebblepool was beginning to go over a list of possibly treatments for her next patient when Fernpaw spoke up again, this time riddled with joy. Not even the medicine cat could stop herself from twitching her whiskers with amusement, a fondness shining in her gaze as she looked down at the tabby. Fernpaw was ever eager to learn and prove herself, and rather than let herself get caught up in arrogance and pride, she kept herself on a path of youthful joy and determined mindfulness. ”See to Icetail. He’ll be an easy fix, as Oakshade.” Both toms weren’t as beat up as their other two patrolmates. Icetail especially, given that he only had a few scratches and bruises. Oakshade may take a bit more time, but Pebblepool doubted he’d have to stay in the den once his wounds had been looked over. Either way, the last two patients would be quick appointments for both Pebblepool and Fernpaw.

[ luckily I am! my weekend wasn't too great because of changes that were made at the hospital, but by tomorrow I should be doing much much better. the concert was lots of fun although I was dead tired afterwards. how are you doing?] Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool Fernpaw's ears were pricked, prepared to hear Pebblepool's response to her question. She knew she asked plenty of questions and sometimes they were more oblivious than the rest. She liked having knowledge about her duties and their patients. There was nothing wrong with asking a question, right? As long as she wasn't pushy with them, Fernpaw would always be the kind of cat to ask questions. It didn't matter what the subject was, she would still inquire for more information. Hearing her mentor's voice snapped her out of her thoughts, her paws moving in place gently against the cave's floor. "Really?" she meowed in surprise. "That's great! I hope she will heal well, like every other cat! I don't want anything bad to happened to Bearpaw, I really like her."
The grey spotted tabby smiled shyly behind her whiskers, realizing as she had blurted out admiration for Bearpaw. There was no way that the guard apprentice would hear her, but she would be sure to tell her within time, of course. After all, the black she-cat needed to heal first before doing anything else. Her hearing would be tested often and her wounds would heal before fading away, although there would be scars. It would take time, but at least she would live.
Despite her wishfulness, the medicine cat apprentice was always radiating with positivity. It was uncommon for her to be pessimistic, especially in her duties and whenever she was around Pebblepool or other clanmates. She wasn't sure why her mentor lacked in positivity, but she knew the blue grey she-cat was much more logical than she was. At least Pebblepool was realistic and able to compartmentalize her emotions. She wondered if it was something that could be taught or if it was just by instinict. Maybe she would ask her one day, but right now, there were more important things at task.
As she listened to her mentor, Fernpaw nodded many times. They would have to keep a close eye on Frostfalcon, even though she had a broken leg. It would be a miracle if she could escape the den with her injuries, plus considering her pain levels. She seemed hard-headed to the tabby, although it did give her some insight on the differenrces between Frostfalcon and Pebblepool. It was no surprise that the two sisters weren't close at all. They had differences in their personalities, feelings, and much more. Yet Fernpaw was still curious. She wanted to know the reason why from her mentor and her littermate. "I understand. She'll need a lot of time to heal, so I hope she's okay with that," she responded. Her amber gaze lit up, slightly shocked by Pebblepool's comment about Dimstar. "I didn't realize Dimstar would have all of them stay in camp. I know Bearpaw and Frostfalcon have the worst injuries, but Oakshade and Icetail's don't seem as bad. At least from afar, but I trust Dimstar's decision. Her word is what we follow anyways."
She didn't know that much about Dimstar personally, besides the basics. She was smart and a decent leader in Fernpaw's opinion. Other than that, the leader was a mystery to her. Fernpaw's attention was quickly redirected as Pebblepool spoke, telling her that Icetail would be her next patient. She had noticed the medicine cat's whisker twitching and the young cat let out a purr. She felt a bit of hesitation, but Icetail seemed like a great night guard. Hopefully he wouldn't be like Frostfalcon. "Okay! I'll go find him," she meowed, sticking her head out of the den's entrance. Her amber gaze scoured the area nearby for the white tomcat. "Icetail? Are you around here?" Oakshade outside the medicine cat den — accompanied by: ? Meanwhile, Oakshade had been looming outside the medicine cat's den. He was exhausted, although he refused to show it. Instead, he sat down and watched as cats wandered in and out of camp, as if today was like any other day. At this hour, he was usually asleep and preparing for his next patrol. Today, that wasn't the case. Instead, he was grieving Hollyheart's unfortunate death, but it came with being a night guard. Each guard knew they were putting their life on the line. Every one of them knew that if they died at any point in their life, the end was the end. There was nothing more to it than that. They existed to serve their clan and keep them safe from the suspicious sounds and creatures in the night.
He noticed Fernpaw's small tabby head poking out of the medicine cat's den entrance. Blinking, the dark colored tom glanced over, wondering if he or Icetail would be treated next. He didn't mind waiting longer, but the fatigue was getting to him. Oakshade knew he should be patient instead of complaining especially since his injuries were nothing compared to Bearpaw, Frostfalcon, and Hollyheart's combined. There was no need for him to complain, at least not yet.

glad to hear you're doing better and im glad that the concert was fun! i've been alright - this summer class im taking is trying to kill me though Pebblepool »
with fernpaw & oakshade - Sand
StarClan willing all their patients would heal given the proper time. Pebblepool hoped that it would only be Hollyheart that the Clan would have to mourn, though she was sure that soon enough the Clan would be sitting vigil for yet another fallen Clanmate. Life in TheliaClan was hard, living out in the wild, fending off predators and needing to track down every piece of prey, was not easy, but the life of a night guard warrior was all the harder. Every night they risked their lives, and Hollyheart had been unfortunate enough to meet her end now. Night guard cats never lived for long, it was just how it had always been. It was sad, yes, but the Clan needed these cats if they were to survive. Letting the creatures of the night get too bold would spell disaster for the entirety of the Clan, and this was why the night guard had been implemented in the Clan all those generations ago.
Because of a night guard’s typical early demise, not many formed deep friendships with others, especially with those outside the guard. In knowing this Pebblepool couldn’t help but wonder how things would go between Fernpaw and Bearpaw, especially now that she knew her apprentice was growing fond of the black molly. While Bearpaw had made it out of this attack with her life, she very well could lose herself in the next. How Fernpaw would deal with the loss of a friend, Pebblepool had no idea, but she decided right then and there that she would stand beside her apprentice until she was better. Even still, while she knew the inevitable would eventually come, she silently wished Bearpaw a long and prosperous life.
While Pebblepool had an inkling of concern for Bearpaw, mostly for Fernpaw’s sake, there was none of that for Frostfalcon. Even as she turned to look back at the sleeping form of her sister her jaw remained tight and her eyes somewhat narrowed. She didn’t want her sister to pass into StarClan any time soon, she would never wish death on Frostfalcon, but there wasn’t any sympathy there. To Pebblepool the night guard was just anoher patient in her den. ”Night guard patrols will still go out I’m sure,” the medicine cat mewed as she turned her eyes from Frostfalcon and back to Fernpaw. ”But a few will be forced to stay in camp.” She was almost certain that Icetail and Oakshade would be in the clear after they were looked at, but even if something came up and they could work for a few days there was still Owlmask, Sleetgaze, and Berrystorm.
Following her apprentice out of the den, Pebblepool motioned with her tail toward Oakshade. ”You’re with me,” she told him before turning and slipping back into her den, ears angled back to check for the sounds of the tom following.
Icetail »
Much like Oakshade Icetail himself was ready to curl up in his nest and sleep. That’s where he should have been by now, but last night’s patrol had been an utter mess. Something had attacked them, one of the creatures that lurked out in the shadows, an entity of no name, and had battered them. Hollyheart had lost her life. Guilt squeezed the white tom’s chest. He had not been near the ginger molly when she had been attacked. In fact, he had no idea that the creature had been close to her when it had struck - he had heard the warning sounds of something nearby, as had the entire patrol, but when they had been attacked it had come from out of nowhere. Everything had been cast in shadows, the darkness too deep to see in. Perhaps if Icetail had been closer in position to Hollyheart or if he had acted quicker then maybe she’d still be here. Maybe she would have gotten away without life ending injuries.
But of course he had to remind himself that being a night guard was deadly. Every night they went out on patrol was another night than they were risking their lives. The information of having a shortened life was drilled into the heads of every aspiring night guard. Hollyheart had given her life, literally, for what she believed in, and no cat could take that honor from her. Even still, the death of a Clanmate, a patrol mate, was always hard and would always hang heavy across Icetail’s shoulders.
A familiar voice grabbed the tom’s attention. While his eyes were still heavy he managed to blink them open wider. Icetail pushed himself up to his paws, wincing subtly as dull pain from his wounds flashed across his body. ”Here, Fernpaw,” he rumbled in response, waving his plumy tail toward her. He then spotted Pebblepool appearing as well, calling for Oakshade. ”How’s Bearpaw?” The black apprentice was his sister’s kit. He fretted over her despite not always expressing that concern. Yet even he couldn’t stop his expression shifting as he thought about Frostfalcon, worry obviously creeping across his visage. If his feelings toward the blue-gray molly were anything deeper than just camaraderie he would never admit it. ”How is Frostfalcon?” Icetail questioned, hoping to hear good news about them both.

[ what kind of summer class are you taking? I remember I did that for 2 years in a row and once in high school and I hated it. biology was actively trying to torture me. ] Fernpaw medicine cat den — accompanied by: Icetail Fernpaw had yet to think of what would happen in her friendship with Bearpaw. She hadn't weighed the consequences of her newly made friend being a night guard and her being a medicine cat apprentice. In Fernpaw's naive mind, it didn't matter. She already could imagine them getting along well and being friends for a long time. Yet she hadn't factored in Bearpaw's role and the dangers she faced every night. If her injuries weren't enough to bring the spotted tabby to realization, nothing in this moment would.
She turned her head to listen to Pebblepool, leaving her clouded thoughts behind. All she could imagine was the fun times she and Bearpaw would have together, but she really needed to focus. She noticed that her mentor looked back into the den, presumably at Frostfalcon, then back to Fernpaw. She felt that Pebblepool wasn't worried about her littermate being injured though her reaction with Leopardpaw would be entirely different. She loved her brother and even she was a bit worried about Bearpaw, who she barely knew! Somehow Pebblepool was able to keep her emotions under wraps unlike Fernpaw. Honestly, she found it to be perplexing. "Oh, good! At least the others can go out," she mewed, glancing at Pebblepool. "Hopefully some rest will help their injuries until they can head out again."
Within a few moments, the blue she-cat was asking for Oakshade and had already turned around to head back into their den. Fernpaw fixated her gaze on Icetail, whose plumy tail was huge in comparison to her skinny, thin tail. It was something she always noticed about the tom, but she wouldn't dare blurt out that she thought his tail was "cool looking." She wasn't a kit anymore after all! Feeling a bit embarrassed, the medicine cat apprentice mumbled a mew quietly. She hoped she hadn't woken up Icetail from his nap. It was probably the time he usually slept like all the other night guards, but she could see that the white tom was tired, grief stricken, and worried. "Bearpaw's okay! I think she has a lot of shock from whatever happened. But don't worry! She'll be alright, her ear will heal, but we will have to test her hearing," she explained before pausing momentarily. She stared at the night guard, wondering why he seemed a tad bit more worried about Frostfalcon. "Uh, Frostfalcon has a broken leg, just right above her toes. She's got a lot of scars and so does Bearpaw, but Frostfalcon's old wounds opened up."
Fernpaw hoped she wasn't overwhelming Icetail with a lot of information. She didn't exactly know how else to put things lightly, but she didn't want the tom to worry anymore. "Come with me, I can check your wounds out," she added, flicking her thin, spotted tail to the den's entrance. "Is there any place on your body that hurts the most?" Oakshade medicine cat den — accompanied by: Pebblepool Oakshade was surprised that he still was awake and able to keep his eyes and ears open for Pebblepool's voice. He, like Icetail, wanted to forget the patrol from last night. The strange creature of the night had etched a vision into his mind. It seemed like he would never forget it, but maybe it would take time. He didn't want to focus on it anymore, though each time he closed his eyes, the creature was the first thing he saw. Its strange, blood curdling screams echoed in his head. Because it was so dark during their patrol, Oakshade didn't get a good look at the creature. All he knew was that it was loud, frightening, and a bit unfamiliar.
He was unsure if he should tell Dimstar or Pebblepool, considering that neither of them had a lot of knowledge about the creatures of the night. The night guards got lucky if they didn't come across one during their patrols. He assumed it was the usual, but somehow that didn't sit right with him. Oakshade shook out his messy, ticked coat and focused on the medicine cat and her apprentice. He'd have to dwell on his thoughts later, his injuries and the other guards were more important than anything else right now. His yellow-green gaze widened a bit, noticing that Pebblepool and Fernpaw were finally finished with Bearpaw and Frostfalcon. He couldn't help but wonder how Bearpaw was doing, she was his apprentice after all. She had chosen a dangerous way of life, just like he did, and he hoped she would live a fulfilling life. Even if it meant being a night guard and experiencing trauma after trauma, Bearpaw certainly knew what she was getting into.
Once he heard his name, the brown ticked tabby tom got to his paws and padded carefully over to Pebblepool. "I'm following," he told her, padding after the blue she-cat. Concern shone in his gaze momentarily before he began to inquire about his patrolmates. "How's Bearpaw doing? What about Frostfalcon, is she holding up well?"
