We never really got to see Brackenfur and Sorreltail’s only tom-kit, but how might POT have been different if he’d been denmates with Hollypaw, Lionpaw, and Jaypaw? What might his warrior name have been? Who would his mentor have been? Which of the apprentices would he have been friends with, and what do you think his character would’ve been like?

I don't think the events that transpired during The Power of Three would have been all that different had Molepaw lived and been a denmate of the "original" Three. I think he might've been given a basic warrior name, like Molewhisker or Moleclaw.

He would have been interesting since the only other Tom apprentices around were Berrypaw and Mousepaw. I can see him being a protective and caring brother that may clash with Berrypaw’s more egotistical personality. (Along with potentially blaming Mousepaw for Cinderpaw’s injury along with being grateful to Jaypaw for being the reason two of his sisters were alive and uninjured.) I could see him potentially having a crush on Hollypaw as an apprentice but the arc would take its course and overall sink that anyway.

Come to think of it, Molepaw’s canonical mentor is an interesting subject. There aren’t many options for who it could’ve been— just Firestar or Ashfur, assuming Firestar wouldn’t give him one of his parents for a mentor or give Stormfur or Brook an apprentice. Icepaw is stated to be Whitewing’s first apprentice, Jaypaw was Brightheart’s only apprentice, and Birchfall never had one, since he complained about Whitewing getting one before him. So if Ashfur was Molepaw’s mentor, I wonder who Lionpaw’s mentor would’ve been instead? He would have been interesting since the only other Tom apprentices around were Berrypaw and Mousepaw. I can see him being a protective and caring brother that may clash with Berrypaw’s more egotistical personality. I could see him potentially having a crush on Hollypaw as an apprentice but the arc would take its course and overall sink that anyway. These are really cool ideas! I think it would be funny to see Molepaw try to become Jaypaw’s friend, and Jaypaw being annoyed with him but begrudgingly coming round. I could also see Molepaw being good friends with Mousepaw before Cinderpaw’s accident, and him having to learn to forgive him in time.

I could see Moleclaw too, though it would be funny to have Molewhisker and Mousewhisker be named at the same time and hang out together. Makes me wonder what Poppyfrost and Berrynose would’ve named Molewhisker, had Molepaw never died.

I really loved the idea that Molepaw could have been one of Firestar's apprentices, though Ashfur is also a good thought too. Molepaw deserved better, I do wish we could see how cats who died as apprentices would have turned out, like Swiftpaw and Shrewpaw.

Hmmm, looking over the allegiances I feel like Brackenfur could/would/might have been Molepaw’s mentor. (While this does somewhat mess with Hollyleaf, it does open up another mentor for her and a warrior who never had an official apprentice in canon: Sorreltail.) Which also would have created an interesting dichotomy as Sorreltail was Leafpool, their biological mother’s essentially best friend within the Clans. (Plus Hollypaw would then mentor hop around between her “aunt,” and her “aunt’s,” friend. Which now that I think about it, Jayfeather having Brightheart is interesting as this is the cat who Leafpool became jealous of in the arc prior.)

I just always thought Molepaw's mentor was Rainwhisker. And as for personality, honestly, if his sisters were mostly relegated to being in the background in PoT, I don't see why he'd be any different.

Oof, I completely forgot about Rainwhisker being alive between TNP and POT. That would make a lot of sense, and I love the idea of Rainwhisker mentoring Sorreltail’s son, especially since they were all the kin they had for each other after Sootfur’s death. I never realized before that Sorreltail lost her mother AND her brother to badger attacks. If Molepaw hadn’t died though, he would need a different mentor in time for POT. The Erins sure are brutal, if they took out a mentor and his apprentice in the same time gap. Yeah, Jaypaw and Lionpaw weren’t the best at making friends among their denmates. Molepaw would definitely need to have the right personality to engage in either of their stories more. He might have been friends with Hollypaw, though, with how close she was to Cinderpaw. I could see the three of them hanging out a lot together.

I love the idea of Sorreltail being Hollypaw’s mentor! I’m probably biased because she’s one of my favorite characters, but I do think she’d get along really well with Hollypaw. Sorreltail was a pretty active character in TNP, adventuring with Leafpaw and putting up with none of Hawkfrost’s shenanigans. She could match Hollypaw’s energy, maybe more so than her mate did in canon. Also, I’ve always thought that Leafpaw named Hollypaw after the holly bush she hid in in Twilight when she visited Crowfeather, and Sorreltail called her out for allegedly gathering poisonous berries lol. So her becoming Hollypaw’s mentor would be very apropos.

Molepaw deserved better, I do wish we could see how cats who died as apprentices would have turned out, like Swiftpaw and Shrewpaw. I really like the idea of Firestar being his mentor too! I always assumed Firestar never took an apprentice after Brambleclaw because he felt it would benefit his warriors more to gain experience and build connections. But I could see him taking over Molepaw’s training when Rainwhisker died, and helping him through his grief. (Not so much with Ashfur.) For real! It always stings when the writers kill an apprentice, they have so much potential as characters and it just feels like a horrible waste to abandon them. Especially between arcs, when we don’t even get to see the way their deaths affect their loved ones, which is typically the reason to kill very young characters who haven’t had a chance for an arc of their own. Seedpaw is legitimately one of my favorite characters in the series, I would be so glad if she and Shrewpaw both could’ve lived.

Why am I getting the sense that the apprentices this series kills off always have more potential than the warriors they've been keeping around for the last 5 arcs. (I guess that's a little unfair though as saying characters they killed off so early having more potential is a bit subjective/left up to headcanons more than anything. Especially when it's more so the fault that a lot of background warriors don't have much going for them).

That’s honestly true— the way background cats tend to be characterized, Seedpaw might never have gotten another line of dialogue again had she lived, like poor Honeyfur. Maybe if Honeyfur had died as an apprentice, I would think she had way more potential than most cats too. I guess that’s the power of headcanons. But if Sorrelstripe can gain plot relevance three arcs after her debut, there’s always hope for the Honeyfurs of warriors lol

I don't think much would have changed story-wise except for giving him some scenes and possible development as a background character with family ties to his parents and sisters. Thus probably meaning some more spotlight for him to a certain extent considering that Cinderheart, Poppyfrost and Honeyfern got some of that as well in PoT/OotS.
In terms of his warrior name, I'm thinking Moleclaw or Molepelt. He was described as large (and the biggest of his litter) as well as his pelt being black with a gray muzzle and paws, so his name really does suit him quite a bit, in my opinion. As for his mentor, I too like the idea of Firestar as having this role. Which would also have given him some more moments of getting mentioned (maybe due to some of the other apprentices being jealous/envious that his mentor was a Clan leader). If he had lived beyond the Great Battle (or even just PoT), I could see him eventually getting a mate and having kits. Maybe with Hazeltail. Who apparently was promised to be getting a love interest in OotS (by Vicky) but did not get one and instead died without ever having anything confirmed.

I think in Su Susann's old works, Molepaw was apprenticed to Stormfur as a gesture to trust him by Firestar.

I didn’t know Vicky said that about Hazeltail— I wonder who her mate was intended to be? I always liked Hazeltail x Foxleap as a ship, but Moleclaw x Hazeltail would’ve been cool in a different world. I think in Su Susann's old works, Molepaw was apprenticed to Stormfur as a gesture to trust him by Firestar. I could see Firestar doing that, with all the hostility that was building in late TNP through POT against outsiders like Stormfur, Brook, and Daisy. Come to think of it, Stormfur’s presence in the Clan probably meant a lot to Firestar at the time, after he had to give up hope on Graystripe ever coming back.

Maybe Hazeltail could take Cinderheart’s place as Hollyleaf’s best friend. The Erins might’ve thought of something more Dark Forest relevant for Lionblaze to do in OoTS, too. And maybe eventually Icecloud x Lionblaze could’ve happened… Edit: Icecloud could be Dovepaw’s mentor and Lionblaze could be lvypaw’s, and Lionblaze has to work through his own DF past with Ivypaw. It might feel special for Icecloud to mentor her old mentor’s daughter, and much later she and Whitewing could support Dovewing through her choice to be with Tigerheartstar.

kinda related, but imo the erins kill off characters they dont have good warrior names for a lot, or backround characters. from my standpoint molepaw was just a disposable backround character. the good warrior names examples are seedpaw, primrosekit (what even), dandelionkit, WISHKIT, HOPEKIT, BLUEBELLKIT, ELDERKIT, TULIPKIT?!?!?!?!? WHY, ERINS????????????????
edit: found marigoldkit!

I was really surprised when all of Blossomfall and Thornclaw’s kits made it to become warriors.
