Can anyone point out how Ashfur's behavior seemed to be coddling/overprotective over Squirrelflight?
because to me, I find him to be a genuinely nice, sweet guy who cared a lot about Squirrelflight. I really liked him before he went psycho, and I didn't see his behavior as "coddling/clingy/annoying" etc.

in twilight, squirrelflight gets irritated with him and says she can defend herself just fine, implying she doesnt like being coddled. earlier in TNP, he also tried to verbally fight brambleclaw in her honor when she did a little mistake on patrol, and i dont remember exact words, but i feel like squirrelflight didnt like either of them doing this (bramble scolded her, while ashfur jumped to her defense and didnt give her a chance to do that for herself).

I think in one of the guidebooks it says Ashfur tried to contain Squirrelflight's fire, while Brambleclaw matched it. Ashfur tried to speak for her and protect her and just...tried to fight her battles for her? Like Briar mentioned above, when Squirrelflight made a mistake on a patrol, she owns up to it, but he tries to defend her honor and argues with Brambleclaw over it and ignores that Squirrelflight admitted her error.
Ashfur had good intentions (though isn't saying much seeing as how he sees her as nothing but an object), but the way he acted wasn't the way to Squirrelflight's heart. Coddling and protecting her is the opposite of what Squirrelflight is as a character. Besides, when he finds out Squirrelflight wanted to get with Brambleclaw his first instinct is to try and manipulate her with guilt trips and whataboutisms.

I really liked him before he went psycho, and I didn't see his behavior as "coddling/clingy/annoying" etc. Yes, Ash try to be “good, comfort boy who are always near, agree and on her side” but he don’t understand what Squif like someone who have strong will, his own opinion and can argue with her and lead her - as Bramble. |

True, he did act nice and all but Squirrelflight just didn’t want someone like that. thats a good way of putting it. i see it like this: ashfur didnt treat squirrelpaw special before she left for the journey, so its BEYOND bizzare that he gets all excited and nuzzles up to her when she comes back...it only gets worse from there. idk where he gets this idea to start going after her out of nowhere like that, but once she becomes a warrior, he acts in a way he THINKS she would like. hence why some people reading TNP for the first time might THINK he's just a "nice guy" at first, but if u pay attention, it's very clear that squirrelflight doesnt like being coddled or spoken for. she is independent and a go-getter. anyone who truly knows her in universe would understad that and not act the way ashfur did, but then why did ashfur do it anyways? bc he never truly knew her, and was pushing this nice guy persona onto his version of her in his head. he didnt know her at all if he was coddling her, clinging to her, speaking for her as if she couldnt do it herself... ashfur's just a crazy guy from day 1. idk how else to explain it. he's a weirdo. |
