Death of a Queen
This clan doesn't believe in StarClan or any form of afterlife. The current leader of LightningClan is much beloved, a mother to all. She's had many kits over the years, her deputy is even her adopted child. When she is brutally murdered, no one feels safe. All eyes turn to Wraith, a mysterious rogue who had been staying with the clan. Accusations are thrown and fear is spread, but no one can find any concrete evidence. Sage, a child of the late leader, decides to search for the truth, with the help of Wraith - who can speak with spirits. They uncover a deeper conspiracy between the new leader and the healer but how will they manage to prove the truth before Wraith is exiled... or sentenced to death?
Territory
LightningClan resides in a thick, deciduous forest. Full of oak, maple, ash, beech, and walnut trees. The undergrowth grows dense in most areas, unruly and hard to navigate for outsiders. A small pool - that branches off from the thin stream that stands as their southern border - is where the clan gets most of its fresh drinking water. Their camp is settled just to the left of the center of the territory. This clan's far (western) border is only a day's journey to the two-leg place.
╎Dark Hollow╎ As its name suggests, this is a hollow relatively near camp that's made from stone. The oak and beech trees that grow around it are close together and have woven branches, that let only small patches of sunlight through. The ground is covered in soft dirt and patches of grass, making it an ideal place to train.
╎Tree Graveyard╎ On the southern edge of LightningClan's territory, one of their open borders, is an area that was devastated by two-legs during before the clan settled here. All that remains of the forest here is dead, overgrown trees, mossy logs, and insect infested stumps. A good place to catch rodents but also offers good shelter for predators.
╎Berry Patch╎ Not only berries are found in this small span of forest, nearer to the clan's southern border. The trees have greater distance between them, allowing an abundance of sunlight to fall on the forest floor. All kinds of herbs and berries grow plentiful here. The sweet, pleasant scent makes this a prime area for sunbathing and romantic pursuits.
╎Lightning Oak╎ Up into the northern part of the forest, the clan has a tree that has been split and burned by lightning in two places, as though the lightning struck the oak twice - hence it's nickname. Birds are easily caught here, along with smaller rodents. Owls tend to perch in this tree, making it a treasured landmark for the clan. Smaller cats are to be cautious.
╎Shallow Pool╎ A little pool a few bear-lengths from the camp. The water is relatively clear but since it's not deep, it can be tepid during the warmer moons. The clan's main source of drinking water, along with the thin creek that branches off. The creek bisects the western side of the forest until reaching a wider stream that separates LightningClan from the moors.
╎Mossy Stones╎ Just beyond the Berry Patch, is a clearing full of stones that are covered in moss. Catmint grows here in abundance and prey is usually simple to find. The moss found here is exceptionally soft and sought out for nest lining. A popular place for healers to spend time, as it's so close to the majority of the herbs that grow within the territory.
C A M P Hidden by trees, bramble thickets, and some large rocks, the OwlClan camp is well defended from predators. The prey pile is near the center of the central clearing, lined by stones. A low hanging, gnarled branch of a large beech tree is where the clan leader calls meetings, called Twisted Branch. Dens are made up of large, thick bushes, tangled roots (leader's den and nursery), and a fallen log (medicine den). The entrance is a short tunnel made from brambles and thorn thickets. It's easy to get snarled up in the thorns if one isn't careful.

Wraith
✦✦✦ male // twenty-four moons // warrior with (open)
A hectic morning led to a chaotic afternoon in LightningClan. The late leaf-fall air was chilly and unforgiving, which usually meant cats in camp were gathered in clusters for warmth, quietly sharing tongues. That was not the case today as cats scurried around like a swarm of bees. Ever since Fern had burst out of the tangled roots that made up the leader's den, fretting about his missing mother, no one had gotten a moment of peace. Wraith thought the whole situation foolish. Was Vixen not a full-grown cat? Could she not choose to go off on her own without inciting a panic? Clan cats were odd. Then again, from what he knew of the russet and white molly, it was strange for her to be gone for this long.
Instead of searching the territory frantically or dashing about like a chicken with its head cut off, the tom had moved to the far side of the warrior's den to observe. His odd-colored eyes had long since unfocused, staring at nothing in particular. A silvery form flickered at the corner of his gaze, a constant presence at his side. The buzzing in his head informed Wraith that it was speaking to him but Wraith let his mind drift instead. Nothing good came from speaking with spirits. Eventually, it would tire itself off and drift away. That was the hope anyway. A jarring, ear-splitting scream jolted the tom into awareness.
"Noooo!"
The cry was full of anguish and a heartache so profound, it even tugged at Wraith's chest. Cherry stood shaking in the center of camp, locked in on the group that was staggering through the entrance. Wraith sat forward, catching a glimpse of torn russet fur. Vixen? Alarmed, the tom took a few steps out of the shadows. He paused immediately when the full scene came into view. Fern and Clover carried the leader's body between them, Quill and Meadow bringing up the rear. Clumps of fur had been torn from the leader's sleek coat, blood hid all the white she had, and her glassy yellow eyes were unblinking. Vixen had been murdered.
Cries of alarm and grief flew around the camp, as cats young and old converged around the patrol. With a sinking feeling in his gut, the tom turned to look at the ghost who'd been pestering him all day. "That's what I've been trying to tell you, Wraith," the starry gray and white tom stated drolly, shaking out his coat. His brother was an irritating gnat that haunted him, refusing to find peace in favor of being a nuisance. "Vixen died this morning, I think? The other spirits have been chattering about a new arrival." A chill seeped beneath the tom's thick, wild fur. If he hadn't been ignoring Casper's presence, he would have known sooner, though he's not sure what real difference it would have made. No one would believe a former outsider... much less one who claimed he got the information from a spirit.
As he watched the clan fall apart around him, Wraith felt useless. He hadn't known Vixen well enough to be as affected as everyone else, though he'd admired the she-cat. She'd taken him in without any fuss and her love and support wove through this group like the roots of a mighty oak. She was their heart and without her? The tom watched as Fern faced his clan mates with sad green eyes. "Our mother... she's gone." The words were hollow and full of pain. A son who'd just lost his dearest mother.
Wraith resisted the urge to curl his lip. He didn't trust the light brown tom as far as he could toss him. Not for any particular reason, he just gave off bad vibes. Not that anyone else seemed to agree. Fern was the adopted son of Vixen and had apparently proven himself time and time again. So much so that he'd somehow outshone both Ridge and Thorn, earning himself the rank of deputy. Maybe his gut was wrong, maybe the others saw something in him that Wraith didn't see. All the tabby knew was that he didn't like Fern and the feeling seemed to be mutual. [ aaah! i wasn't trying to write that much. o.O darn you sudden (and fleeting) muse! i'm sorry R, please don't feel like you have to match that! my starters are usually pretty long because i'm trying to set the scene and establish the character but still ~ and i'm also sorry this took me a minute, sick brain is a kicker. ]

Sage
✦✦✦ female // twenty-two moons // warrior with (everyone?)
The day had started with lots of little inconveniences for Sage. First, she woke up earlier than usual because a thorn had gotten into her moss bedding and was sticking into her side. Then, Cherry had grabbed the thrush she'd had her eye on, making her grab a squirrel from the bottom of the pile that looked less than appetizing. Several other smaller incidents happened after; An unsuccessful hunt, a chill that never left her body, and an antsy feeling that kept her from being able to sit still. She was sure her day couldn't get any worse, that is until Fern had reported their mother was missing.
"They found her! They found her!"
Sage was in a search party with Ridge, Lark, and Blue when Cloud, Ridge's trainee, came running towards them. A rush of relief made the pit in her stomach a little lighter when Sage heard they'd found her mother. Though, the reassurance was short lived when she saw the panicked look on the young she-cat's face. Something worse than dread washed over her, and she made eye contact with Ridge before the two of them, and the rest of their small patrol, raced towards camp. They were coming up on the entrance when the echo of Cherry's anguished cry rang in the air. Sage sprinted, weaving around objects and jumping over tree roots. She practically slid through the entrance tunnel, ignoring the way the thorns and brambles pulled at her fur.
The sight of the bloodied and mangled Vixen made her heart drop. She barely recognized the molly that raised her, loved her, and cared for her and all her siblings. No, that cared for every single cat in the clan. A sharp ringing in her ears drowned out the chatter and cries of the cats around her, her senses dulling as she continued to stare at Vixen's body. Sage's paws brought her forward until she stood above her mother, not even acknowledging her siblings as they slowly approached as well. A flash of heat spread throughout her entire body, and panic began to rise, causing her heart to beat rapidly.
"Mama...?"
Her voice croaked out pathetically, tone dripping with heartbreak. Sage buried her pink nose into her mothers blood-soaked fur, trying to ignore the sharp and rusty smell. She remained there for what felt like forever, but was only mere seconds. Then, pain, anger, and frustration quickly replaced her grief. Her expression hardened and she turned sharply to her brother, Fern.
"What happened? Where did you find her?" She hadn't meant for her tone to sound so harsh or accusatory, but she was upset and rightfully so. "Who did this?" This time Sage turned to look at the cats around her, her clanmates. This was no work of some predator, so it had to be someone she knew. That knowledge alone had fear gripping at her heart.
Suddenly, and unexpectedly, her amber eyes met with a pair of mismatched blue and red eyes. She'd made eye-contact with Wraith who sat near the warrior's den, away from the chaos. Her anger melted away, and her chest tightened as she tried to fight the urge to cry. Do you know? her expression read curiously, much softer than before. Sage shook her head and looked away from the isolating tom, turning her attention back to Fern and waiting for some kind of explanation. (haha it's okay! i think you made a great setup to go off of! hope it's alright that i copied your layout, i thought it would make the posts look nice and uniformed also you're good! i was gone and busy all weekend anyways)

Wraith
✦✦✦ male // twenty-four moons // warrior with (open)
If Wraith thought there had been pandemonium while Vixen had been missing, it was nothing compared to the concentrated chaos that descended upon LightningClan now. A cacophony of screams, sobs, and growls assaulted his ears, nearly drowning out Casper's voice. 'You should go visit her ghost, she must be so lost..' His brother spoke of the disorientation a new spirit went through, the phase where they knew something was wrong but they didn't realize that they were dead. He shifted his head in increments, a subtle head shake. It would be a few days before Vixen's spirit was able to leave the site of her death and fully remembered how she had died.
"Mama...?"
The soft, croaked word rose above all the other noise. The voice was familiar, even if he'd never heard it sound so devastated. Sage. His strange gaze fell upon the leader's youngest daughter, watching as she snapped at Fern. A pang of sympathy made his chest feel tight. Wraith was no stranger to loss, in fact death was his most loyal companion. This wasn't just an end to a beloved leader, this was betrayal. Someone within the clan had killed Vixen in cold blood. As far as the rogue could tell, this community had been built on trust and open-communication. The foundations were shaking. He silently hoped they wouldn't crumble, it would be painful to watch a group as close as this fall apart.
A flash of honey caught his attention, shifting his gaze up to meet the golden gaze of Sage. Her anger and sorrow had softened into an expression he couldn't understand. He tilted his head ever so slightly, his large ears perked, in response to her silent question. Fern's mournful explanation broke their connection. "Sage... I'm not sure what happened. Our search party ended up near the Tree Graveyard. Meadow was the one to find her... she was already so cold..." The speckled tabby broke off into quiet sobs, his head hanging so low it's a wonder it didn't drag on the ground. Fern's green eyes lifted slowly, locking in on Wraith over the heads of his clan mates. The large dark furred tom stiffened, a sense of foreboding froze the blood in his veins. She was found near the Tree Graveyard which meant... Of course.
"Wraith's scent was all over the area. What were you doing there, rogue? Did you really think you'd get away with this?" Fern's accusations flew across the clearing, bringing with it the silence of suspicion. One by one the cats turned, their gazes like the sun as the burnt into his pelt. He felt the fur rise along his spine, his claws shooting out from his claws as he prepared to be attacked. A cruel sense of deja-vu settled in his stomach like a stone. "I saw Wraith sneak out of camp last night!" He didn't see where the words came from but he grit his teeth, internally rolling his eyes. He hadn't been sneaking at all. Wraith struggled to find sleep, he always had, and had wanted to stretch his legs. And then had run into the mischievous spirit of Light, an eternal kitten who had begged him to play.
He realized they were expecting him to confess, staring and waiting with bated breath. "I didn't kill Vixen." His voice was rough with disuse, sounding too loud in the sudden quiet. Wraith met Fern's gaze as the tom stormed towards him, a vicious snarl spread across his muzzle. Wraith didn't back away, squaring up to the deputy, displaying his own teeth. Despite being the older tom, Fern had to tilt his muzzle slightly to glare up at the outsider. "Of course you wouldn't admit to your crimes!" Spittle flew into Wraith's face and it took every ounce of restraint he had not to tear into the other feline.
"Fern. Fern stop. I'm sure there's an explanation for Wraith's scent. Our mother is dead, now is not the time for a fight!" Thorn shouldered his way through his clan mates, eyeing his litter mate. The golden tom normally shone like the sun, radiant and warm but today his light was snuffed out. Wraith felt a small amount of shame for almost picking a fight when the clan should be focused on grieving. He took a single step back, not backing down from Fern but acknowledging the truth in Thorn's words. "Thorn, he killed her, took her-" as Fern broke down yet again, his brother moved to stand at his side, pressing their flanks together as he whispered words of comfort. Wraith sheathed his claws, turning his gaze away from the emotionally charged scene. [ oof. i'm not sure about this one, but it's what i could come up with! also, my length will probably get a bit shorter, so that i can produce some quicker replies. o.O ]

Sage
✦✦✦ female // twenty-two moons // warrior with (open)
Sage was almost taken aback at Fern's sorrowful explanation, trying to recall the last time she'd seen her adopted brother so emotional. At the mention of Meadow, she looked over her shoulder and caught the attention of the shy siamese. She couldn't even imagine what it must've been like to be the one to find her mother's maimed body. If she were there, they would've had to pry her away if she'd discovered Vixen first. A mess of different emotions continued to swirl and make Sage dizzy. Grief burned into rage, which faded into confusion at the situation overall.
Her head swivels again at Fern's accusation and what he says next nearly makes her recoil. Disbelief floods her amber gaze as it lands on Wraith again. She flinched when he called the darker furred tom rogue. Sure, he hadn't been with the group for long, but he was part of the clan now. Vixen had taken him in like her own, just like she did with everyone. She trusted her mother's judgement.
"I saw Wraith sneak out of camp last night!"
It felt like whiplash the way her head kept snapping side to side, trying to recognize the voice or see where it was coming from. Her heart dropped to her chest as she noticed all the accusatory looks landing on Wraith, not sure what to believe. Sage was having a hard time trusting Fern's words, herself. Wraith might've been new to LightningClan, but she'd never noticed the tom to be violent. He could be rude, unsociable, and short with cats, but he was never aggressive. Instead, a certain tabby tom came to mind if she had to think of someone combative.
"I didn't kill Vixen."
Those words settled deep in her heart. Sage didn't know why, but she felt a small amount of relief when she heard Wraith's denial, like she could hear the truth behind his statement. Then the toms were confronting each other and Thorn had to step in. Her stomach was doing flips as she watched Fern practically break down against their brothers side. The young molly took a deep breath before stepping forward.
"Was that all you noticed? Wraith's scent?" Sage never hesitated to speak her mind and could be confrontational with others, but to speak out in front of everyone was a little more than nerve-wracking. How could her mother do this without shaking? "That is a serious allegation and we have to consider more than just the scent of another cat." Briefly glancing to Wraith, she took another deep breath before continuing. "Plenty of cats are in and out of the camp at night, what makes Wraith leaving any different? Is it because he's an outsider?"
"My mother is gone. Our mother was murdered, and the situation is too delicate to be throwing out accusations so lightly." Sage seemed to settle a little, a bit more confidence coming in to her voice. "First things first, Vixen needs to be cleaned and prepped for burial, and while that's happening a patrol should be sent out to scour the Tree Graveyard." Instead of looking to Fern, who was deputy, and she supposed leader now, her gaze fell on Thorn. "What do you think?"

Wraith
✦✦✦ male // twenty-four moons // warrior with (open)
The very last thing Wraith had expected was for a LightningClan cat to stand up for him, he was essentially still an outsider. His almost anti-social nature meant he hadn't made many (if any) friends. To this tight-knit group, he was an interloper. So when two of Vixen's own children went to bat for him, the nearly black tabby gave a slow blink of disbelief. He took another awkward step back, suddenly missing the shadows more than anything. He'd like to say he wasn't used to this much negative attention but seeing dead cats had never exactly endeared him to anyone.
Sage was right though. Vixen's body needed to be tended and prepared for burial and if the clan wanted to survive, they couldn't stop patrolling. The fresh-kill pile already looked meager, since most of the group had focused solely on finding their missing leader for most of the day. He shifted his attention back to the brothers, his gaze lingering on Fern's face. The heartbreak there would have been more convincing if Wraith hadn't seen the flash of annoyance that briefly illuminated the tom's green eyes. His gut gave a tug, warning him that something about this wasn't right.
"You're right, Sage." Thorn's voice had softened into affection as he addressed his younger sister, taking a step away from Fern, who was apparently trying to compose himself. Wraith watched as the remaining siblings moved to stand beside the red and white molly, Cherry resting lightly against her littermate's flank. There was a sign of solidarity and support that Wraith had never seen before he'd been taken in to the clan, especially from his own family. Unless you counted Casper. "Sky? Would you help the elders prepare V-Vixen.." There was a painful crack in the golden tom's voice as he stumbled over his mother's name.
"And would... would anyone like to volunteer for patrols? We need to go to the Tree Graveyard but we also need to feed ourselves." Wraith felt a surge of unexpected admiration for Thorn, who had pushed through his grief in order to serve the clan. It didn't take a genius to guess Fern didn't feel the same, his eyes darkening as his brother took control of the situation. So he pushed a weak smile onto his face and turned to address the clan. "Yes, we need some patrols. Thank you, Thorn, Sage," his voice was deceptively soft, reminding Wraith of a snake's hiss. The tom wondered if he would be accepted on a patrol, even if he did volunteer. [ i tried to keep it a bit shorter this time! ]

Sage
✦✦✦ female // twenty-two moons // warrior with (open)
Sage hadn't realized she'd been holding her breath until Thorn addressed her, and she let out a heavy exhale. Her heart still hammered against her chest, feeling the thrum of it in the tips of her ears. Pride began to bloom in her chest as her older brother acknowledged her, validating her response to the situation at hand. It made her feel good to have Thorn backing her up, and saved her from the possible humiliation if anyone had challenged her. The feeling didn't last too long as her gaze briefly landed on Fern, watching for his reaction. It wasn't like she had intentionally gone over his head, it was just her instinct to turn to Thorn for everything. Sage couldn't tell if the tabby tom was angered by it or not, then again she could never tell what Fern was really thinking.
Looking away before Fern could catch her staring, the young molly pressed her face into Cherry's neck. Sage nuzzled into the russet she-cat, taking comfort in her sisters warmth as Thorn continued talking. Her ears perked and she found herself torn on volunteering for the patrol, or staying by her mother's side. She weighed her options for a moment, and finally decided on the patrol. If she wanted to know what happened to her mother, then going to the place of Vixen's death could point her in the right direction. Plus, it would take the elders, and Sky, a while to clean and prepare Vixen's body.
Hesitantly pulling herself away from her littermate's side, Sage stepped forward. "I would like to volunteer to go to the Tree Graveyard, and I think Meadow should come with since she found the body." She looked back to the siamese, offering a sympathetic look. "That is, if she'd be willing to." Sage would understand if Meadow didn't want to go back, but if they were about to start an investigation then they needed someone who was on that patrol.
Once again, the white and red furred molly found herself locking eyes with Wraith once again. He looked like he was torn on what to do as well. After Fern's accusation, she couldn't imagine that the clan would let him out of camp so soon. She wondered if he would be interrogated.
"I also think that Wraith should come too." Sage braced herself for the reactions to her controversial statement. "If his scent is at Tree Graveyard, then it might be beneficial to see him retrace his steps. See if his pathway crosses with Vixen's at all."

Wraith
✦✦✦ male // twenty-four moons // warrior with LightningClan
A few warriors stepped forward, clearly choosing to shove their grief aside in order to serve the group. Wraith had never felt more like an outsider looking in as he watched them murmur soft words of encouragement to one another. This was a true community. Not a rogue group that thrived off of power games and a 'cat-eat-cat' mentality but an extended family that supported one another in order to survive. It was so... different. Nothing at all like anything Wraith had ever experienced in his travels. It made the tom long for something he couldn't name. His odd eyes shuttered, sealing away the strange emptiness he felt in his chest. Everything wasn't all sunshine and rainbows in LightningClan. There was a murderer among them.
"Thank you all. Maple, will you take out a border patrol to freshen our scents? The last thing we need are predators sneaking into the area," Fern paused here, his green eyes landing heavily upon Wraith's person, "or rogues." The large dark gray tom felt the fur on the back of his neck rise, sensing the hostility that Fern barely attempted to hide. Wraith forced himself not to respond, biting his tongue against the cutting words he longed to spew. Fern clearly believed that he had murdered Vixen, even if there was no solid evidence to suggest his involvement. To be frank, the new leader likely wasn't the only one. He felt the weight of many eyes on his pelt and sensed their confusion, pain, and anger. Thorn seemed eager to get them back on track and others began to volunteer for patrols.
Sage took a step away from the weeping Cherry, speaking up and offering her services. Fern had a soft look on his face, as though admiring his sister her courage. "Of course. Meadow should definitely go with you." The order was spoken not without kindness and sympathy but the little siamese molly still seemed to shrink in on herself. 'The poor thing just returned from finding Vixen's mangled corpse and now they want her to relive that moment? So soon?' The disbelief and disgust in Casper's voice echoed Wraith's own thoughts. At least Sage had offered her a choice. Still, Meadow dipped her head in acceptance, stepping up to Sage's side. 'You should go too, Wraith,' his brother persisted, sending a chill down his spine as Caspian nudged his shoulder.
"I'm their only suspect." Wraith kept his voice so low, no one would be able to hear it aside from his ghost companion. If the clan found out about his oddities, it would only make the situation worse. The dead were a taboo subject amongst the living, no one liked the reminder that they were mortal. Death was to be feared and as a cat who had a special relationship with spirits, most feared Wraith as well. His name on Sage's lips had his piercing eyes landing on her own. She had asked for his company, hoping that it would aid her investigation. Fern immediately bristled. "No, Sage. Until evidence is found Wraith stays-"
"Let him come. We need answers. I'll join Sage's patrol, if anything happens, it'll be three against one." Ridge took a step towards Fern, leaving the side of his littermates. The light brown tom looked like he wanted to argue but refrained when a few others voiced their agreement. "Fine, but keep an eye on him." Wraith sent Ridge and Sage a wary look, unsure if he could trust their kindness. For all he knew, they could be leading him away from the group to interrogate him. Still, he padded around Vixen's children and stood a fox-length away from Meadow, who eyed him nervously. Looks like he would have to see the disoriented Vixen after all.
