As the title says, how would the Clans handle rabies, would they have to kill the cats who have it, or try to get them better?

I honestly think they'd deal with it poorly since you can't just stuff all the sick people in the den and expect them to sit there and die like these guys will act completely normal one day and then the next completely feral, I'd imagine they'd try to figure out something but the easier and safer way would probably be killing them, as those infected will have no sense of fear and would more or less go out of their way to attack other cats and animals alike man why couldn't we have a cool rabies plot damn you ashfur damn you

Made a fic about this. They try to help the cats with rabies, but then isolate them so the disease doesn't spread. Cats are torn because they do not want to kill their Clanmates.

There's this idea of rabies as essentially making something into a hyper aggressive zombie out to do nothing but kill things in its path with immense savagery. In truth though, what rabies really manifests as is a loss of a grip with reality, leading to disorientation and a great deal of panic in the poor animal. And panicked animals bite things defensively as they stumble around, looking drunken and not able to perceive reality appropriately. A panicked clan cat, much like a human, has enough intellect that biting things isn't their instinctive first response when panicking. Rather, they would likely be attempting to use their warrior skills sloppily. They might be going for killing bites if they're Dark Forest trained, but if it's not part of their muscle memory, it'd be rare for them to do so in the throes of panic.
Given their intense panic, they would likely try to flee the clan in paranoid fear, and end up dying by themselves in the woods somewhere. They might bite a few cats on the way out, but it's unlikely to spread very far, because someone wound up that tight and staggering around like that isn't someone most cats would try to stop. This is ultimately why rabies is honestly not a very fast spreading disease; it's too obvious and those infected by it are easy to avoid.
That is the exact opposite of how rabies works. It's a progressive degeneration of nervous system function, you'd be seeing many symptoms long before the aggressive phase. And as I said, on the contrary, something with rabies is absolutely terrified of anything and everything around it, and will act to defend itself in sheer terror of the perceived threat.

It’d be an interesting sublot but not a great main story, like most diseases shown in the books.

I made a sickness that is based on rabies in like 2018. I call it foamcough. I haven't touched it because it would be insensitive to bring it up as a plot for Fan Clans given current events. Below is the information for foamcough. Most cases of foamcough result in death, primarily in kits, elders, and cats with weaker immune systems. If a cat reaches stage four, then the best method is to feed them nightshade. Curing foamcough is very tricky, as the cat can rapidly become worse and pass the disease on if not treated and restrained. Foamcough is generally passed through shared meals and primarily a bite from an infected animal or cat. If a cat has a confirmed case of foamcough, then they must be separated from the camp to prevent the spread of infection. Medicine cats must wash their paws and muzzle with a herb remedy made up of lavender, stinging nettle stems, and dried oak leaf. - - - Stage One: Cat has a medium-grade fever and mild confusion. They begin with minor convulsions, mistaken for chills. They will have increased appetite and be irritable. Stage Two: Cat's fever develops into a high fever and will have mild convulsions. They will excessively drool and sometimes foam at the mouth. In weaker cats, they may cough up blood. Headaches are common and they have memory trouble. The cat has trouble sleeping. Hallucinations are mild. Stage Three: The cat's fever disappears, but they have convulsions. They will still excessively drool and foam at the mouth. Coughing up blood and having bloody drainage from the ears is common in weaker cats or cats with severe cases. Cat is highly aggressive and impulsive. Aggressive cats must be constantly given poppy seeds and thyme. Horsetail, in combination with raspberry leaves, is provided to help stop bleeding. The only cure for this illness is cocoa beans from twoleg gardens. However, high dosage may poison and kill the cat. Cocoa beans improve overall brain function and blood pressure to push the toxins out of the body. It also enhances mood and healing, which can help with the bleeding. Stage Four: Cat is extremely aggressive and has lumps on their head. Bloody drainage is common from the ears and nose. They will no longer drool, but foam. They will have moments of paralysis and convulsions before going to into a blind rage. Cat cannot sleep and is highly paranoid. The lumps on their head are rather large and tender. This is the last stage and commonly last a day before death. - - - Foamcough, like coppercough, is hard to cure. However, it is much easier to treat. All cats with foamcough must be taken out of camp to a secluded spot to prevent spread of infection. The medicine cat must be accompanied by warriors and all cats that have not contracted the disease must wash off in a stream and wish herbs. Stage One: Often given chamomile and poppy seeds. Lavender is given for fever and chills. Stage Two: Chamomile, lavender, and depending on the cat, raspberry leaves are given. Marigold is the best remedy for pain. Juniper berries are given in addition to chamomile to calm the cat's mind. Poppy seeds are given to help the cat sleep. Stage Three: Aggressive cats must be constantly given poppy seeds and thyme. Horsetail in combination with raspberry leaves are given to help stop the internal bleeding. The only cure for this illness at this point is cocoa beans from twoleg gardens. However, high dosage may poison and kill the cat. Cocoa beans improve overall brain function and blood pressure to push the toxins out of the body. Also enhances mood and healing, which can help with the bleeding. Stage Four: Juniper roots are given due to the high concentration to calm a cat. Raspberry leaves and horsetail have no effect. If a cat bites another, the bitten cat will become infected. Unfortunately, there is no cure past this stage. To end suffering, the cat can be given nightshade.

vectoring34 Thank you for saying this, this is what bothered me every time I saw a rabies plot suggested. People often think it would be really "exciting", but honestly it's just painful and highly doubtful it'd spread like mad (otherwise, irl, there'd be much more rabies, most animals don't have rabies). From an animal hospital website, "If your cat is exposed to the rabies virus, they will not show signs immediately. The typical incubation period is roughly three to eight weeks, however, in reality, it can be anywhere from 10 days to as long as a year. The speed at which symptoms appear depends entirely on the infection site." It can even take months for symptoms to reach a time where they can be passed on, although admittedly for cats, since they're pretty small, it'd probably reach crisis quickly. Not to mention, at least according to articles I read, a lot of time, rabies leads to paralysis as opposed to the mania. Rabies also only spreads once symptoms show, so there cannot be someone carrying and spreading it unknowingly. Additionally, the UK has no rabies. Granted we have no idea where warriors takes place, but the most popular theory is fictionalized UK. This aside. What I imagine would happen is that one cat gets this from a fox or a bat, the clan doesn't think much about it at first. Then a few days to weeks later the cat begins to act strange. Maybe it gets spread to 1 other cat, perhaps an insistent medicine cat. Then by this time they probably already know maybe to just give up on the cats. I don't think more than 1-4 cats would get infected if it is done with more 'realism', although I guess there could be infighting in the clan when the medicine cats basically give up on the patients.
