I think Spottedleaf as a character is just really uncomfortable. Idk how to feel about her tbh.

Neutral/Dislike these days. Although I did vote Dislike. Her StarClan version along with Yellowfang's was previously on my least favorite characters list but is not anymore. There are cats in this series who deserve to be on that much more than her. I think that Spottedleaf had potential if they had either not killed her off or just not made her Firestar's other love interest in the first place as the latter really did quite ruin her canon characterization for me personally. Her behaviour as a StarClan guide towards some of Firestar's family members such as Leafpool and Jayfeather was also awful on occasion.
But I will never understand where the "she groomed Firepaw" mindset came from that a lot of people continue to have in various places of this fandom. Those two only had like two or three actual scenes together while he was just an apprentice and she was still alive, with none of them showing her to be written as manipulating him in that way before her death. Firepaw had a crush on her back then but it did seem to simply be one-sided on his part at the time. The narrative only implied for her to reciprocate those feelings after he had been named a warrior/was an adult and she started visiting him in his dreams as a spirit.

Firepaw had a crush on her back then but it did seem to simply be one-sided on his part at the time. The narrative only implied for her to reciprocate those feelings after he had been named a warrior/was an adult and she started visiting him in his dreams as a spirit. iirc in spottedleafs honest answer its implied her crush started on him when he was an apprentice. id have to re-read it to be sure. tho honestly taken into context with her novella, that couod easily be expanded into a far more interesting narrative of somebody struggling through the cycle of abuse and their own warped perspectives. im meh myself on spottedleaf. i do think her life was unfairly tragic, and she had a lot of potential. maybe i can bring myself to like her someday. |

I remember it being stated in Spottedleaf's Honest Answer that Spottedleaf did not even noticed him until Firepaw started caring for Yellowfang. And while it is also said that she hoped Fire paw would join her after she died, I'm not sure this has to mean she was already reciprocating his crush on her at that point. She was probably aware of it though. I mean at the end of the day, we really don't have that much context on Spottedleaf's full thoughts about Firestar when he was still just an apprentice. Only the few interactions/scenes between them in Into the Wild from his own perspective as well as her short story (not referring to that horrid novella of hers though btw). I for one always thought that the narrative implied she only felt friendship for him before her death/he became a warrior. Although I could be wrong with my interpretation of the text with this observation. |
