I was lucky enough to get a copy early from my Barnes and Nobels. I actually really enjoyed the book, I though the pacing was well and more Flipclaw scenes which I loved.
Sunbeam -
I love this girl I’ve loved her ever since her first appearance in River. I’m so glad to see her make up her mind and stand up for Fringewhisker. I hope the two form an ever closer relationship as the arc goes on now that they’re sister in laws.
I also liked her having courage to stand up in the first place, she really takes charge and I liked her development in this book.
At first she’s trying to get over Blazefire and her jealousy and feeling of betrayal over Lightleap. She’s also indecisive on the code changes due to her mother. By the end of the book however she’s learned to get over her jealousy and try to be happy for BlazeLight. She also stood up for herself against her mom. I hate Berryheart and her siblings they all suck to trick Fringewhisker .
I also like how the catmint patrols words on code changes had an impact one her.
I’ll be honest I think Tigerstar 2(or another leader) should take over RiverClan for a moon or so just until they can find a good leader, but he went about it awfully. When they didn’t want help he should have backed down, you can’t force your help on others.
Frostpaw -
Ill be honest I skimmed through most of her chapters, I did like the parts with Splashtail and I think he’s going to be manipulative because when have good things ever happened to medic POV’s? Haha I’m mostly joking but I do think he’s a bit suspicious…
I found Mothwing and Owlnose kinda annoying. To be honest I do kinda have a character bias towards Sunbeam bc I like her better but I still like Frostpaw. Tbh I just don’t have much to write on her now.
Anyways I’m still pretty curious as to who the leader will be. I have a feeling it’s going to be Mothwing tho. I don’t hate Mothwing or anything but I just reallllllly want any other cat to become leader. They could be evil or good just any of the RC background cats getting some acknowledgment would be great. Not that they haven’t gotten some this book, but I’d just like more. I feel like Curlfeather should’ve died in this book rather than in River. Everything was happening so fast in River for Frostpaw plot wise. I feel like they should’ve shown her as her normal self a bit before everything got awful. Idk I just felt like not a lot happened in her chapters until the very end. I still didn’t hate them though. Also Graypaw and Mistpaw already got over grieving their mother? Hasn’t it only been like two weeks. Idk I just thought that was funny in a shocking way. I feel like the cats in RiverClan should’ve allowed Frostpaw to grieve a bit longer. I understand their desperate but it hadn’t been too long ago that her mother died. I personally didn’t like the work now grieve later message( I think that’s what she said?) that Curlfeather told her, I don’t know much on this topic so my opinion may change but I didn’t think it was good advice. Feel free to try and explain if you feel the same way about it or differently since I’m still pretty indecisive on it.
Nightheart -
I’m conflicted, I like him sometimes and I don’t others. I got to see a Flipclaw speek again tho and I was so happy. He and his sister should stop teasing Nightheart tho when he asked. I stand by Flipclaw no matter what tho he could do anything(besides kill Sunbeam) and he’d still be my favourite.
Anyways…
I liked how he felt on the patrol it was nice to see him happy for once. Bramblestar and Squirrelflight are uhhhhh…. they keep on somehow dragging him into their fights. Like I think it’s clear they’re toxic for each other. It’s interesting but uncomfortable to read, I hope the authors can deal with this topic well. I do like how the DF affected both of them tho, but still like idk it’s still sad what they’ve become.
Squirrelflight keeps on giving him apprentice chores and I was kinda confused as to why. I wish her reasoning was explained more or why she seems to not like Nightheart. I KNOW his name change can’t be the real reason. I really wish this was just given an explanation and it doesn’t just make SF seem like a one dimensional bully but that’s just my thoughts on it.
Also like everyone in ThC hates him except Alderheart for some reason. I guess most of them didn’t have personalities before but they didn’t have to make them all awful. I feel bad for Nightheart but it’s forced, kinda like with Shadowsight in TBC. I wish they’d written some more people who like and defend him in ThC.
Anyways I think that sums up my thoughts on Nightheart right now. I’ll add more if I think of anything else.
NightBeam -
Ok ok don’t judge me but I don’t mind this. I think the buildup in this book was done well, it makes sense why they’d both like each other. I just hope Sunbeam gets to keep her personality, and the “Everyone in my Clan hates me.” thing doesn’t spread from Nightheart to Sunbeam. I think so far it’s good though. I just hope they don’t ruin it.
Sunbeam please keep your friendship with Fringewhisker, Spireclaw, Blazefire, and Lightleap. Please I beg of you keep your friends and personality.(sorry I’m being a bit overdramatic xD) I like it when relationships don’t form at the very end of stories though, that’s probably why I enjoyed the latter half of BristleRoot rather than the buildup.
Last things -
- So glad Mapleshade hasn’t shown up yet I hope it stays that way :<
- Civil war in ShadowClan coming up maybe? That will be interesting to read about. I don’t remember it ever happening before.
- Alderheart is pretty adorable in the book for the few scenes he was in. Same with Rootspring, it was nice to see him again.
- Have the clans never seen a Scottish Fold before? Still the kit and her mom were cute. I love kittypets
- Ok was it only me or did a two leg actually get hit by a monster? I need to reread the scene again because I was so confused.
- Wonder what chicken Alderheart, Rootspring, Sunbeam, Lightleap, Fidgetflake, and Nightheart ate. It be funny if it was like KFC or something.
- The catmint patrol wasn’t too boring but I did prefer the other half of the book where they’re back in the clans.
- For a second I thought there was going to be a Love Triangle between Flaxfoot, Sunbeam, and Nightheart.
- Tbh while I don’t mind NightBeam I would’ve preferred for him to move clans bc they were friends at first rather than him wanting to be mates with her. It be funny if he forgot he could only change clans for a mate and just chooses a cat on random to pretend to want to be mates with on. The cat he chooses is like Flaxfoot or something and he doesn’t love Nightheart but is just happy to be included.
Anyways I might change my mind on a few things as the day goes on but I just finished it so I wanted to get my opinions out while they were fresh in my mind.
