I want people's thoughts on this. Why would Tawnypelt name one of her kits after Tigerstar 1? I know she followed him when he left Thunderclan (valid in my opinion) and not only that but why would the authors write that and then make him leader?? Its so confusing
BTW I am only up to Shattered Sky but I know Tigerheart becomes leader

I've always found it odd when Tawnypelt named one of her kits after her father, given how she didn't want anything to do with him and would even go as far as to call him out on how he twists things to fit his standards and expects everyone to go with it once his true intentions were revealed, not sure what a replacement name would've been still, for me, I'd imagine her naming him after her brother something like thistle-/brush-/berry-, or her mother something like bright-/..Uhh...That's all I have for Goldenflower lmao, doesn't really help that Tigerheartstar is an exact replica of his grandfather in terms of appearance
Though highkey I never understood why Tawny couldn't have been a leader either, granted I get she's older and of a past generation but I'd say she's one of the very few experienced warriors within her clan not only that but having trained 5 apprentices is a feat in itself I mean if she's able to defeat a cat almost 4 years younger then her without keeling over I'd say she deserves something, I get she's of Tigerstar's lineage but since Tigerheartstar would've been leader regardless I honestly don't see a problem with it

I always thought it was her trying to associate the prefix of Tiger with someone who isn't an evil maniac but instead someone who's better. I always assumed she named him after Tigerstar I so she would think of her son before her deranged father and would hope that others would too.

The only reason I can think is that from author perspective might be a bit of a fan riot to have a brother ruling one Clan and a sister ruling another. Would have been an interesting concept to explore, especially from the standpoint that tigerstar wanted to unite the clans under him but years down the line his kits have become leaders..... Tawnypelt deserves it dammit she has worked so hard to become a ShadowClan cat and has done so much for her Clan. She sticks to her morals and ethics and is still compassionate. A temperate but not boring cat that would have made a stellar leader.

Yeah this i accept as probably what was going through her mind when she named him. It's still not a great idea, and her mate should have told her no (nicely, just like I really don't think thats a good idea- what about naming the kit after your mother?) Narratively it just muddies the whole freaking story. Just a poor choice by author smh

It's actually not that strange or even uncommon. Do you know what reclaiming is? Because this sort of thing actually happens all the time, both in fiction as well as in real life. Tawnypelt clearly wanted to name her son such so that the name Tiger- wouldn't be tarnished forever because of what one monstrous cat did.

As 𝓣𝓲𝓷𝓾𝓿𝓲𝓮𝓵 already said, Tawnypelt wanted to reclaim/revive/redeem the Tiger- prefix so that it would not be forever tarnished and associated with her infamous murderer of a father Tigerstar. Similarly as to how Firestar named Brambleclaw/star in honor of Tigerclaw/star which was never a topic of discussion in the actual books but got stated in an author chat instead. Many fans also headcanon that Firestar did this to take back the -claw suffix from being associated with a cat such as Tigerstar.

This, and I assumed it was a Brambleclaw-like situation whereas he's being named for Tigerstar's positive traits like his leadership, courage, and ferocity in battle.

Yes I know and understand what reclaiming is. I just don't really get it as angyfrog said that Tawnypelt didn't want much to do with her father. Didn't he also try to recruit her into the Dark Forest along with Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost and she turned her back on him? Why would she then try to reclaim the name? and pretty soon after the battle with the Dark Forest which was instigated by Tigerstar. Idk just seems too fresh. Maybe also because it just seems sad to me to saddle your kit with that name in the hope it wouldn't be tarnished. What if Tigerheart turned out to be bad too? Just let Tigerstar I fade into obscurity man. I think I also just don't really like it because he became leader as well and for readers it could be confusing? It really should be let go in my opinion. Idk I think I'm not explaining myself well.

I think Tawnypelt just wanted to have something positive to remember her otherwise horrible father by and thus like Hollyfall already said, named her son to honor her father's strengths instead of constantly having to think about his many faults similarly as to how Firestar named Brambleclaw to honor Tigerstar for his strengths as well.

I think the worse thing about his name is that it occasionally backfires, Tawny named him after her father in order to "reclaim" the Tiger prefix however other cats including herself compare him to Tigerstar the first which is just, yeah icky imo, imagine being compared to a mass murderer because you're doing something that people aren't all fond of

It wasn’t just about reclaiming, but also a way to erase the power of her father’s name. It was her way of tarnishing his power.
