Chapter 1Halloween.
It was a holiday that I’d never celebrated before. You see, my mum is really paranoid. She is very nervous that someone would snatch me up off the streets if I roamed them at night. Even one night in a year was not allowed, and so, at 13 years of age, I, Nora Cooper have never been trick-or-treating until tonight.
Yes, tonight was the night everything changes. My brother Seth has turned 6, and he’s old enough to go out with me and a few friends with our mum’s permission. She agreed we were old enough to have some fun as long as we returned by 10 o’clock. You have absolutely no idea how ecstatic I was to finally find out what trick-or-treating was like! I had some freedom at last!
Our mother was more than the average paranoid parent. She limited our internet time, and we weren’t allowed any social media. You don’t believe me? Trust me, people like that are in the world. According to our mother, a creepy man could be behind the screen name we were talking to. Practically every person who spoke to us online was a creep to her. But that’s not all. The phone I use is a state of the art iPhone, I know, but she’s completely disabled Safari on my phone, and has only downloaded a few apps like Candy Crush. The only use the phone has is music, the few games she’s screened and the ability to call and send messages.
Well, it’s not like I minded it much. I preferred reading anyway. The problem is, I’m not allowed to go out with friends without parental supervision. Whenever there’s a sleepover at a friend’s house, I can only stay for a little while, but can’t have an actual sleepover. Mamma says that because I’m a girl, I need to be more careful. Even the parents of close friends can be creeps who spy on young girls. And I know. The statistics say that most children who are sexually abused, are abused by those they know rather than strangers. It’s a fact.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand, Halloween. As today marks a milestone where I don’t have to be by my mum’s side during the whole outing, I am extremely excited. This is a new neighbourhood that we’ve come to live in. Previously, we lived an hour away in an apartment, but with our dad’s new job, we were able to buy a really nice house in a decent neighbourhood with a school nearby. The neighbours on either side of us have children that Seth and I have befriended since we’ll all be going to the same school.
Of course, mamma wanted to have an in-depth discussion with the parents of the kids before deciding to let us go. Dressing up for Halloween is a lot of fun. I decided to be a witch. Due to our Christian upbringing, mamma and daddy despise the Pagan holiday, but to let us experience it a little, they decided to relent just this once. Seth wants to be a superhero, but ended up changing his mind after watching Sherlock Holmes. He absolutely fell in love with the character, and decided to be Sherlock for the night instead.
As Christians, dressing in black was too superstitious. Mamma wanted me to dress in bright colours, like Samantha from Bewitched or Glenda from The Wizard of Oz. I ended up dressed in a silver dress, a silver hat and silver shoes so that it didn’t clash with my skin tone, hair and eyes.
“Mamma, we’re going to be late!” I squealed, as she checked me all over to make sure I had everything.
“So what? I want you to be safe. Do remember that you need to use your phone if you’re in trouble. Also, you need to set a reminder that you must be home by 10 o’clock sharp. Not a second later, young lady.”
“Yes mom,” I groaned.
Seth meets me at the front door, and we’re escorted by our parents to the front of the driveway where Llewella, Keelan and Fallon were waiting.
“Llewella! Keelan!” I shouted, waving as we drew near. Seth ran over to Fallon as soon as he saw her.
“You’re really pretty, Fallon!” He said happily. Fallon was dressed as an aqua fairy, Llewella as a purple witch and Keelan as Dr Jekyll.
“I’m so excited,” Llewella squealed.
“You said you do this often?” I asked.
“Yep! Every year since we turned six,” she giggled.
“What were you last year?”
“I was Gretel and Keelan was some asian monkey.”
“I was Sun Wukong! He’s the legendary Monkey King-”
“Keelan Lee! Are you listening to me?” His mother demanded.
“Yes, ma. I heard you. Bring Nora, Seth and Fallon home by 10pm sharp.”
“Don’t use that tone, young man.” Keelan didn’t talk back.
After our parents stopped fussing, we could finally walk down the street. It’s a dimly lit street full of decorations on most of the front lawns. Our house was the only one that was bare. Seth and I look back to see our parents waving at us. We have back, before heading for our first house. It was the house diagonally from ours to the right. The family living there had a wonderful German Shepherd they’d named Bishop. He was a pretty young boy and was very lively. According to our parents, they also had a few ferrets. Why do people like having ferrets as pets? I don’t understand. Cats, dogs and birds, yes, but rodents and animals like ferrets? Not so much. I have nothing against it, of course, but I just don’t understand why they like them. It was just weird to me.
Knocking on the door, a skeleton greeted us. Fallon screamed, dropping her tote bag. Both Fallon and Seth had made their own tote bags for the night. Her bag was a mint green with blue sparkles. It really suited her dress.
“Trick or treat?” we chorused. Keelan picked up Fallon’s tote bag, opening it for the man to add treats to it. The man just folds his arms, leaning against the door.
“Trick,” he smirks.
As the older three, Keelan, Llewella and I had water guns in our tote bags. Our tote bags were configured to have a hole in the bottom that was just big enough for the muzzle to pop out, so all we had to do was lift the guns with the tote bags still over them, and shoot the man in the face with water.
“Sh**!” The man cursed as the makeup he’d used wasn’t waterproof. Our trick was immediately effective, so he gave Fallon and Seth treats, albeit reluctantly. We could still feel his glares as we left for the next house.
Seth and Fallon were giggling afterwards, making us smile happily. I was glad Seth was having fun. The next few houses were perfectly happy giving us treats. Soon, we came across a really dreary house. It was the only house apart from ours, that didn’t have any Halloween decorations.
“Who lives there?” I asked.
“No one,” Llewella hushed. “Apparently it’s haunted.”
She side eyed the house cautiously. “Every year, a few kids enter, but they’re never seen again.”
“Did the police check it out?” I asked.
“Yes, but they found nothing. No trace of the children were found.”
“Nora! I saw a girl in the window of that house!” Seth called out. He was right at the gate of the haunted house, pointing at a window.
“Where?” I asked. I couldn’t see anything. Seth looked back at me, and I looked down at him.
“There’s a girl at the door!” Fallon cried out. Looking up, we noticed a little girl smiling at us. She held a teddy bear in her arms, looking like a little angel in her blue dress. I looked at Keelan and Llewella, and both shrugged back at me in confusion. She wasn’t someone they’d seen before. Looking back, she was right in front of us. None of us had seen or heard her come close. It was a little scary.
“Hi,” she said cheerfully.
“Hi there. Why’re you in the house? What’s your name? Are your parents around?” I asked kindly.
“I live here,” she chirped.
“You live here? How long have you lived here for?” Llewella was very confused. She’d lived here the longest, and this was the first time she’d seen the girl in the neighbourhood.
“I don’t know,” she shrugged. “I’ve always lived here.”
“Are your parents around?” I asked again.
She shook her head. “No.”
“Where are they?”
She shrugged again. “Not sure. They disappeared.”
“So you’re alone?” I asked sympathetically.
She nodded, then shook her head. “I have Stuffy!”
She pushed her bear forward for us to see.
“His name is Stuffy?” Keelan asked.
“Yeah.” She pulled her bear back into her arms, hugging it close.
“What’s your name?” I asked again.
“Moira.” Chapter 2... Chapter 3... Chapter 4... Chapter 5
