A demon named Martha was floating around Limbo. She was bored and wanted to play with someone. Martha looked at her storage of books, which were full of rules and boring stuff like that. A demon couldn't play with anything, the rules said. But she wanted someone to play with.
I want to explore the universe, Martha thought. She was tired of being in her own hot, miserable realm. She floated toward her parents. The little two foot shadow admitted to her parents that she'd wanted to explore the world and leave Hell.
"You want to make friends?" Martha's father, Prince looked shocked. "You know that's against the rules, Martha. You can't make friends with living creatures."
"And why not?" Martha frowned. She didn't understand why demons had to follow the rules all the time.
"Because it's against the rules!" Prince said, floating around her. He was a Shadow Person. He had claws and a strange looking hat and looked like a shadow with red eyes. Her father was strict, always playing by the rules. But Martha was getting sick of the rules.
"I'm going out anyway," Martha growled, glaring at her father. "And you can't stop me."
"You won't be invited back into the realm." Prince warned her.
Martha didn't care. She was too curious of the outdoors world. She wanted to learn and explore. She wanted to stop following the stupid, boring rules of a demon.
Martha left her father. She created a black shadow in front of her and went inside. The shadow opened up into the universe, where there were tons of stars and planets. She thought the universe looked beautiful. There was so much to see here, and yet, everyone preferred to scare the humans. Well, she wanted to do something different. She didn't want to scare humans; she wanted to see what the world had to offer!
Martha started to float around the black sky in the universe, turning around and around. Goodness, she couldn't pick which one she wanted to visit! There were so many bright options. Literally.
Martha eventually spotted Earth and decided to float toward Earth. Feeling excited, she headed toward one of the green lands. She found herself frowning in disappointment.
It looked old and haunted. The area was worn, full of abandoned dens and the grass wasn't even green; it was brown, and looked as if it was dying.
Martha spotted a human carrying something shiny that looked like it could poke you. Was it a knife? She wanted to touch it, liking the shiny reflection coming off from the weapon. But she knew from her father's lectures, that knives could hurt you.
Martha decided to watch this human. She floated toward him, hiding into the black shadows of the abandoned houses as he kept walking on. He looked angry.. the man was huffing and puffing, and his arms were waving around in frustration, as though he were thinking about something that bothered him.
Martha was curious. Humans had emotions, she realized, emotions that made them react in an odd, yet intriguing way. The human had a white thing in his hand and she smelled smoke; she didn't like that smell, and it made her red eyes water, but she continued to stare at the angry human who was smoking.
The human had himself leaned against the wall of the house and continued to smoke the white thing. Martha wanted to introduce herself, but she shook her head. What if he didn't like her because she was a demon? Humans were supposed to be naturally afraid of demons. She was thinking of how she'd make her approach until she heard him scream.
The human was pinned against the door against another human. The other human carried something long and black - a gun, Martha reflected, and she gasped. She learned from her father that guns were dangerous. She knew she had to do something to help the man.
She floated from her hiding spot and made herself visible to the two humans. Both of them turned around and screamed in horror as they saw her. Martha's eyes were narrowed and her claws were out, and she slashed the human that looked threatening to the one she was interested in.
The dangerous human got scared and ran off, and the one she was interested in was trembling in horror.
"Don't hurt me," the human whimpered.
Martha blinked her friendly gaze and shook her head. She put her claws away and placed her arms against her shoulders. "I won't, dear friend," she said. She tried to make her voice sound very comforting.
"Friend?" The human blabbled. He was sweating, and his eyes were widened in terror. "Humans don't make friends with a freaky shadow! You're supposed to be dangerous, and I'm talking to you!"
"I only want to talk to you," Martha explained. She floated next to the human, pressing against his side. He felt warm and sweaty.. and she liked it. The human was trembling in pure horror.
"Y-you're so c-cold..." he said.
Martha laughed. This human was funny. She floated around his head, her gaze playful.
"A-aren't you going to kill me or scare me?" The human gripped his knife harder.
Martha was amused. She knew knives from her world weren't affected. She was simply a shadow, a black soul from the universe. "You can't kill me with that," she told him. "And no, I have no interest in killing you. I want to talk to you, and make friends with you."
The human was laughing, which made Martha sad. "You don't make friends with a shadow! You're ridiculous, talking to me."
"For a human, you're pretty mean." Martha huffed, glaring at him.
The human was beginning to turn and head away. Martha's heart beat with anxiety as she saw him turning. "No, please don't leave! I was honest when I said I wanted to be your friend."
"Give me a break," The human growled, glaring at her. "I'm not going to make friends with a demon, you creep. Now get away from me." He ran away, dropping his knife in fear.
Martha held her head down. She was sad. She tried not to look scary or threatening, but the human was scared of her anyway. She stared at the knife. She picked it up, admiring the shiny reflection from the weapon. She wanted to keep it. Martha floated in one of the abandoned houses. This one had a torn roof. It had begun to rain. Martha hated rain. It made her grumpy.
Martha decided to huddle in the corner of the abandoned house, and wrap herself around her arms. Her knife was place next to her, as she thought of more ideas on how to make friends with that human.
