"Stop!" Ivypaw struggled to keep up. "You can really hear all of that?" Her sister Dovepaw was just explaining the true nature of her powers. She could see and hear things from far away. Ivypaw felt overwhelmed by the truth, and, privately, even more jealous. Her sister was gifted with a special power! No wonder cats thought she was better than her.
"Everything." Dovepaw nodded. "I heard the beavers."
"THat's how you knew they were stopping the water!" Ivypaw gasped. She flattened her ears, feeling uncomfortable. It wasn't normal, or natural, for a cat like her sister to have such a powerful gift like this. "That's why Firestar sent you on the mission, even though you were only an apprentice." Ivypaw's head was spinning, and she felt yet another twing of jealousy. Why did StarClan give her sister this gift and not to her? "So Firestar knows, too?"
"Yes, but only Firestar."
Ivypaw's mind was whirling with both jealousy and interest. She was curious how Dovepaw had coped with these powers but also angry. StarClan had left her out into the shadows, left her being compared by other cats and bullied because she didn't have her sister's special power. It wasn't fair. "But it's not fair," Ivypaw complained, glaring at Dovepaw. "You're gifted with something most cats don't have, and it's not fair that you get all the attention from this."
Dovepaw looked angry and she put her paw down. "Ivypaw, this is serious. We're talking about saving all four Clans here. That's why I'm gifted with these powers - so I can save all the Clans." She sounded overwhelmed, and Ivypaw couldn't help but feel a twing of sympathy. She wanted to help her, but she was so jealous that the jealousy nearly knocked her over her paws.
"Save the Clans? What else does the heroic Dovepaw have to do to get more attention?" Ivypaw hissed, her teeth showing. She was beginning to back away. Hostility grew beneath her spirit against Dovepaw.
"Ivypaw, I don't care about that. What matters is that I need to save the Clans, and I need your help." Dovepaw raised a paw and placed it onto her sister's shoulder. "I need you to spy for the Clans."
Ivypaw hesitated. She knew it was wrong now to visit the Dark Forest, but it was even more dangerous for her to continue to visit. At the same time, she wanted to continue to visit. Even though the cats were bad, at least she was liked there...
"Why do you need me to spy?" Ivypaw sounded supsicious; her tone was cool, and she was staring into her sister's green eyes.
"Because we need information. We need to understand where they're planning to attack, or which Clan they're going after first, and when the battle's going to start." Dovepaw explained.
"Okay." Ivypaw faked a gulp; she was nodding. "I can spy for you."
"Thank you, Ivypaw." Dovepaw sounded relieved. "I'm glad you're not angry with me."
Ivypaw nodded, but remained silent. But I am. It's not fair that she gets this gift while I'm the shadow that's signaled out.
...
Ivypaw was leaping with Hawkfrost, slicing at the air. She was in the Dark Forest in her dreams. Hawkfrost leaped at Ivypaw and pinned her down, placing a paw onto her belly. "I almost got you this time," he mewed, getting off her. Ivypaw rose to her paws and lashed her tail.
"Next time I'll slice your nose off," Ivypaw hissed. Hawkfrost blinked in surprise.
"Who put dirt in your fresh-kill?" Hawkfrost asked. "You normally aren't this angry when you're here, Ivypaw."
"Sorry." Ivypaw scuffed the ground with her paw. "I'm just mad. Dovepaw confessed the reason why she's getting all the attention."
Hawkfrost shifted his gaze toward the silver and white apprentice. "What's the reason?" He sounded like he wanted to know.
"She... she told me she has to save the Clans." Ivypaw pounded the earth with her paw, then stared up at Hawkfrost. "But it's not fair. Why is she chosen with powers to save the Clans and I can't do it with her? Does she even care about me as a sister?" Hurt edged her mew, and she felt lonely in the Clans again.
"You're right, it's not fair," Hawkkfrost padded toward Ivypaw, giving her a lick on the head. Even though Ivypaw knew now that it was too dangerous to stay in the Dark Forest, she at least felt safe around Hawkfrost. He'd comforted her when she needed him, and she was able to talk about her problems to him when she was upset about her sister.
"I miss the days when we used to spend time together," Ivypaw murmured. "She promised me we'd do everything together, but look at us now. We're falling apart. We're not close like we used to be. It's not fair."
"It's not." Hawkfrost agreed, wrapping his tail around Ivypaw. "What do you think we should do about this?"
"I want to punish her."
"Punish her?"
"I want to punish her for leaving me in the shadows." Ivypaw's tone was a growl and she unsheathed her claws. "Dovepaw betrayed me. She left me behind when I needed her, and now she's going to put all four Clans above me. She doesn't care about me as a sister."
"That sounds like a good idea." Hawkfrost tilted his head. "But how would you punish her? And Dovepaw's your kin, your sister. Do you feel anything toward her?"
"Not really." Ivypaw shook her head. "I did feel curious about how she coped with her powers, but I'm angry that I'm not very important to her. She cares about her special assignment more than me."
"I'm very sorry that you feel like this, Ivypaw." Hawkfrost rose to his paws. "Let's walk by the river. Maybe that will comfort you."
Ivypaw nodded and padded with Hawkfrost. The two cats padded near the warm, greasy, sludgy river. She didn't like the sploshing sound; it sounded nothing like the cool, lapping waves at the lake. But right now, she needed the comfort.
Hawkfrost is loyal to me.
Ivypaw stopped when she spotted Mapleshade. The tortoiseshell she-cat's gaze was hostile, and she glared at Hawkfrost and Ivypaw. "Shouldn't you two train?" she growled. "The night's almost over. I thought you were going to teach her the leap-and-belly-slash move, Hawkfrost."
"I was going to, but Ivypaw needed someone to talk to. She was upset about her sister again." Hawkfrost explained.
Mapleshade turned to Ivypaw. "You need to get over it. We're supposed to be training for the Clans."
"To be a better warrior?" Ivypaw's hopes were up. She wanted to be a better warrior for her Clan, more than anything! Then maybe ThunderClan would start paying attention to her.
"Indeed." Mapleshade replied. She turned her neck around to see the sun rising. "It is time for you to leave, little one."
"Right." Ivypaw closed her eyes and began to fade. "Good-bye, Hawkfrost."
"Good-bye."
Ivypaw woke up and found herself awake in her moss nest. There weren't any wounds on her this time, and Dovepaw's breathing wasn't shallow; in fact, it sounded as if she just returned in the nest, as though Dovepaw had been out all night. Ivypaw poked her sister with a paw. "Where have you been?"
Dovepaw blinked and rolled onto her back. "Asleep."
"But you smell like the forest. Were you out all night?"
She felt Dovepaw flinch. Why was she lying to her?
Ivypaw let out a growl and flicked a leaf from her moss bed. She rose to her paws and headed out of the den, leaving Dovepaw alone in the nest.
The camp was active. She knew she needed to find Cinderheart. Cinderheart was talking to Lionblaze, who was organizing patrols. The gray she-cat looked pleased to see Ivypaw. "Hello!" Cinderheart padded over to Ivypaw. "Good morning, Ivypaw. Are you ready for training?"
Ivypaw nodded. She yawned with boredom. She'd rather be in the Dark Forest.
"Then let's go!"
