In response to your rant. I agree on your points about Catra and Adora. Yes, the two clearly have a thing for each other, but GOD they are toxic for each other. I feel like more good commentary would have come out of it if after they reunited instead of being all over each other and making each other worse they would have been like. You know what? The way things have gone kinda sucks I think we should just be friends and work on ourselves. Catra especially. It makes me so uncomfortable how all of that is glossed over when she clearly isn't emotionally functional or ready to be in one. Its not. Cute. Or romantic. Its a problem. The feelings may be there but... yeah.
Though the ship I hate the absolute most is Glimmer and Bow. They made no inkling of liking each other as anything more than friends and then all of a sudden they're together in the last couple episodes out of absolutely nowhere. They really couldn't just let the girl and guy characters just be friends and stay friends, huh. :/

If I can talk about a ship I do like in the show though... I'm absolutely nuts for Entrapta and Hordak tbh. But She-Ra has so much MORE to give in terms of substance and character development that either Fans ignore or, like you said, never gets explored or elaborated on.
Or like hey we get a m/m pair in Bow's life that are really interesti-! ohhh you're gonna pretend they don't exist after this episode again because gay men take it "too far" even though your lesbians are front and center. Yes. Got it. Thanks.
Oh hey there is a canonically nonbinary cha-! ohhh they are evil and fall into the "theatrical gender" stereotyping. Mmmhmm. Got it. Very cool.

Entrapta/Hordak immediately jumped out at me on first watch purely because it reminded me of my own energy with my partner at the time so it was entirely self indulgent ship. I liked that it was another official one- but not as obnoxious as the others. They have good chemistry no matter how you read the relationship be it romantic, platonic, queerplatonic, or aspec. She genuinely wanted his trust and to help him grow as an individual instead of be just a clone.
I guess I got way off topic though since the point was ships aren't as important.
I have nothing else to add though cause your points about how they did the characters wrong is entirely on point.
I didn't know anyone seemed to think Bow as a himbo though? He isn't stupid, or terribly masculine despite being male. I enjoyed seeing a male character comfortable in sharing feelings and his body in non-masc clothing choices.
I think another part I really wanted to see elaborated was like... the whole other planets and the rest of the galaxy and shit? That seemed like another interesting thread to explore. I genuinely wondered if we were gonna get more seasons to see any of that cause they totally could.

Mmmhm. Though to be fair, I think She-Ras main purpose, even the original cartoon, was intended to give young girls characters they could relate and latch on to that weren't just the sidepieces for male-dominated media otherwise. So i can kinda look past it.
Its mostly just irritating that this retelling was supposed to be all inclusive and stuff and they really dropped the ball. Not enough to be the worst show ever, but enough to be annoying if you are an adult watching it that thinks about it for more than five minutes.
And I guess I just gotta accept I'm not the intended demographic by age OR gender.

True. That’s a fair point. I don’t think reversing the roles (having the male characters become uninteresting side pieces instead) is necessarily better, though. I feel it’s possible to have a story with relatable, complex female characters without sacrificing well-written male characters. But that’s a small and not-as-important gripe compared to the many others I have. Part of why these flaws are frustrating is because of the intended audience. Kids aren’t dumb, but they do lack the experience and emotional maturity to understand what’s wrong with the message the show is trying to deliver. (Heck, even I sometimes have trouble analyzing things outside the narrative framing!) Rep-starved lgbt youth deserve better role models than this. My hope is that one day lgbt relationships will be normalized enough that people will be able to look back on She Ra and go “you know what. that really wasn’t as revolutionary as we thought. we have so many better, healthier examples now. it’s okay to criticize this show.” But I guess that’s what happens when we get attached to media for younger audiences when will I learnPrecisely this. When you are so starved of something, you might be willing to accept anything, even if it's just crumbs - or in this case, particularly bad tasting crumbs. I hope that one day we'll be able to move past the "trend' where most LGBTQ+ showings are either incredibly brief and meaningless to tick off a box, are in toxic relationships to cause drama, or are full-on trauma fests because "turmoil sells". Not to mention creatives having to fight tooth and nail for years to have even a 5 second same-sex kiss scene in their shows, only for it to be cancelled immediately after. (Ex. Adventure Time.) I think Western audiences are starved of "mature" shows. Most programs are either meant for kids or they just slap in gore, lacking of clothing (not sure if I'm allowed to say the actual word here), etc. and call that "mature". As such, we try to inject adult maturity into sources of entertainment where that might not need to be the central focus. (Not saying kids are stupid.) |

Tbh I am of the opinion that excessive gore and “lack of clothing” as you put it are not necessary for mature storytelling. Relying on those alone to tell a “mature, gritty story” becomes lazy writing at some point. Or maybe I’m just tired of having to screen everything I consume for egregious violence, language, s3xual themes, etc. Why can't we just get a *mature, impactful story with engaging characters and a deeply rich and interesting world where LGBTQ+ representation is through the roof... that doesn't get cancelled by the end of the first or second season, to add on top of that wishlist?  Someone, anyone out there, throw us a bone here.
(*With "Westernized mature" themes being left out entirely or only inserted if they actually add to the story or the characters.) |

One of the best ones I've read recently is A Memory Called Empire. There's a lot of good queer rep in general and even a poly relationship on the side~
Under the Whispering Door is a slice of life gay romance but with ghosts. It's super cute.
Starless has a very queer main character that questions gender and gender roles and is also super gay. That's more traditional fantasy.

Terrible Idea: 1) get red baseball hats 2) put "made you look" in white lettering on them 3) ???? 4) profit Probably yes. Red baseball hats have just become a no go entirely in the US. My roommate nearly got physically assaulted by someone just for wearing his red cap with deadpool on the front because someone saw him from behind and immediately thought it was a maga hat. Its not a risk worth taking for a funny "gotcha" moment. |

I mean, yeah, that is crazy. I had no idea something as mundane as a hat would incite violence. Yikes. That sort of thing doesn't happen where I live so it just didn't even occur to me that it would be an issue elsewhere. My point was that people take their stupid political merch so seriously it would be fun to mess with them (both sides in this case). I didn't really think about it much beyond that. Nah, you're welcome to keep posting here! Just be aware that I might accidentally say something stupid now and then because I only put 3 seconds of thought into it before posting. As much as I enjoy socializing with others I'm still quite clumsy at it xD But I swear my intentions are innocent. I would never try to offend people on purpose. There should be a volunteer service with a number you can call to have them send someone to your house to remove spiders. Like a super lite version of pest control or an exterminator. Hotline for arachnophobes. I would be willing to pay a small fee for that service. Me agrees.  |
